Medical herbalist Jo Dunbar follows up her Secrets From a Herbalist's Garden with this up-to-date look at stress, how it makes us feel diminished and exhausted and simple holistic remedies that we can all use to feel better.
Things have changed in the last few years and countless people are crippled by stress and anxiety. The effects of stress on our health can lead to devastating long-term illnesses such as adrenal fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome. More recently, there has also been the complex condition known as long Covid, which we are steadily learning more about.
Many people feel completely burnt out but do not understand how this affects their body or what they can do about it. Unfortunately, mainstream medicine has almost nothing to offer the person who wakes up feeling exhausted and unable to cope with the smallest stress. Having helped people for more than 20 years to recover from these illnesses, Jo Dunbar passes on her knowledge and experience in this accessible book.
Her healing approach involves nutrition, herbs, exercises, meditation and lifestyle changes. It's a holistic rounded approach but we are empowered to adapt it to our own needs. Jo also doesn't reject mainstream medicine out of hand and she is well-versed in all the current developments and research.
I absolutely loved this book! I was recently diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue and elevated cortisol, as well as some other issues I have. I went on the hunt for books! Because I love to educate myself, it's a quirk. Anyways, I prefer holistic approaches to my life and medicine and this is just chocked FULL of helpful remedies. These remedies are in tea form, chocolate drink form, easy-to-find ingredients, and recipes that don't sound so awful I'd rather be sick than take it.
For the record, I have been ill for some time, and I am only now at the beginning of my journey. Some people have found this book to be boring information, or well-known information. This was not the case for me. As I said, I am a beginner and found this book to full of validating information while also providing helpful and possible at-home solutions. I am buying a copy of this book for my personal shelf at home to refer to often.
The writing wasn't text-book boring, thank God. I'd have struggled had it been, but Dunbar wrote in a way as if you're sitting in the room and listening to advice and suggestions while the body is being explained step-by-step in what it's going through. Dunbar made me tear up a couple of times because things were put on paper that I have struggled with physically, emotionally, and psychologically.. but have never been able to explain myself. I feel like it will help me with future conversations when I try to explain to people that I have good days and bad days, and I never can tell what will happen in a day. Dunbar also made me laugh, so the author definitely has a sense of humor.
All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking into holistic remedies when dealing with burnout and fatigue. If you don't like it, that's okay. But you won't have missed a possible opportunity to find answers when there'd been none before.
To begin, I found it general and already known. As the book progressed, it gave some partially useful information and did have interesting reflections on health conditions and medical information. It's not necessarily new information, but a compilation of pieces which may be aiding some people. I tried to go over it a second time in case I was missing some observations, but I don't think it's something I'd read again.
Easy to understand advice on what to do to reduce fatigue, and how and why each suggestio will help you. A holistic approach to the causes and symptoms, rather than just focusing on individual symptoms.
