I confess I've had a love affaire with vampires for several years now, especially warrior vampires, the kind found in the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and JR Ward. Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire.

For some mystical, magical reason, early in the process, my vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings and it has been the most amazing experience to include flight in my novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle. My special vampire world, published by St. Martin's Press, is introduced in the first book called, ASCENSION (12-28-2010). The second book, BURNING SKIES (May of 2011), opens up the world a little bit more. And even as I write this, I'm on the final draft of my third novel, WINGS OF FIRE (September of 2011). What a thrill it has been to live with my ascended vampires through the creation of this extraordinary, multi-dimensional world!

For more information about my unique take on the vampire mythos, check out my website at carisroane.com and my book release video on YouTube by putting in the search phrase, Caris Roane Ascension.

With every hope you'll enjoy reading my books set in the World of Ascension, All my best, Caris Roane

A while back I read and reviewed Unchained, the last book in the Men in Chains original series.. I must admit, I was a bit disappointed. Enough that when I saw Savage Chains up on Netgalley, I almost skipped it. But face it, it's a Caris Roane book and I really like her style. I am so glad I read it because this one was really worth the read.

Taking place in the Men in Chains world but very little (read that as almost none) interaction between the characters in this book and the rest of the series.. Actually only two people.. well only one and the other was mentioned.. And I guess the big "evil" from the other books was mentioned as well. But that was it. Normally I would be kicking and screaming about this but this time? It was perfect..

Angelica is living a perfectly normal life, rather boring.. Go to work, take care of her ailing mother, sleep, wake up and repeat. Deciding to break out a little, live a little she decides she is going to hit on the gorgeous man who seems to frequent a local bar. Unfortunately she is turned down flat, embarrassingly so and is sent home like a good little girl. Instead of listening Angela considers returning to the bar and telling him off, except she is kidnapped instead. Removed to place she can not even begin to fathom, Angelica is held for auction as a sex slave.

Reyes is dangerous and sexy and posing as a slaver. He has spent years, decades even moving his way up the Slaver hierarchy the last thing he needs is the sexy human Angelica interfering. Thinking his brush off saved her life, Reyes returns to his world and his mission to destroy the Vampire slavers. Only to discover that Angelica is the top attraction at the auction.

What I adore about Caris is she write interesting Vampires. They aren't pretend Vamps.. or "others" that are thought to be vampires, they really are vampires. But they are different as well. They don't follow the traditional vampire with a sire and all that.. nope they are a community, a culture, they are just like humans, only different *Grins*. And while I didn't enjoy Unchained, I did really appreciate her world building. With that world in place, Caris is able to tell a deliciously dark story amidst the caves and caverns of the world.

Just well done!

Angelica was living the 9 to 5 existence, taking care of her ill mother and craving more excitement in life. She had seen Brogan Reyes a few times and was intrigued by his demeanor and looks. One night she dressed in her fancy red dress and went to the club she had hoped he would be attending that night. When she saw him she summoned her courage to confront him, leading to a kiss and then his rude dismissal. Crushed she left the club but never made it home.

Reyes is a vampire. He was taken into slavery at an early age and was able to escape the clutches of his master. He was driven to take down the Stalin Group of slavers who kidnap human women and bring them back to the underground city in which the vampires live. He just needed to play along and get an invitation to join the group, and then he could find a way to take them down. He was attracted to Angelica but he knew he couldn’t be sidetracked by her beauty or risk her being drawn into this brutal world he was involved in.

Once he had received his invitation to join the group, his first assignment was to attend the auction of women who had been kidnapped to become sex slaves. He was repulsed at this behavior but he figured if he bought a group of five he could save more women for one price that was until the beauty he had fallen for was forced to walk the stage. His Angelica was up for auction and the meanest member of the group was determined to purchase her. Reyes went against his plan and did the only thing he knew to do. This is where their story begins.

He is going to have to take this fired up woman who use to look at him with passion and desire and break her into his submissive. He doesn’t know if he can trust her with the truth to his mission and ask her for help in bringing down the group. Angelica is going to have to digest the idea that the man she wanted to bring him for a night is actually a slaver and says he wants to break her. The story gets more intense as you read and leaves you with a huge question at the end. I so recommend this series. I am not even a lover of vampires or their stories but this series has me captivated and I can’t stop till I know what happens.

Fluttering Thoughts:
Worldbuilding: The paranormal side (vampire society) was promising, and there were interesting lines drawn, but since this is part of a serial there couldn’t have been an overwhelming lot of worldbuilding done. What was done was interesting and promising.
Characters: Angelica and Reyes were interesting, and at the cost of repeating myself, had potential. Sadly I didn’t respond at all to either of them, I didn’t feel the chemistry between them, and without any investment in either of the characters, there was little to fall for, sadly.
Plot: The story is interesting, and I think I would have been very into it if my reaction to the characters would have been better. Of course as a part of a serial, it ends right when it gets interesting, but that’s part of appeal of the concept, I think – the tension buildup between installments, right?
Writing: Third person narrative, past tense, his/her POV.
Curb Appeal: Hot cover, hooking blurb, and I really like the upfront, transparent trope.

All in all, this wasn’t a bad read as much as a strange non-event between me and both main characters. I can’t say what it was that didn’t click, there wasn’t anything I got a clear sense of disliking, which only made the overall effect all the more confusing. I wouldn’t want to read this particular serial because clearly I’m not responding to the characters, but I’d wanna try any of the other titles in the series because everything else – worldbuilding, plot, and writing showed great potential.

reviewing all 3 parts of this together.

not a bad story. there were parts i really enjoyed and others i just didn't quite get for whatever reason. some things were a little superfluous to the story (his mother), while others could have been explored a little more (returning to "normal" life & her mother).

a good enough read, but i don't thin I'll be rushing off to read the rest of the Men In Chains series.

Combined review of Savage Chains 1-3

I originally found this series on NetGalley and quickly snapped it up, Born in Chains is the first and is a unique and steamy vampire romance series. This review will be for all three Savage Chains novella’s that are quick reads and introduce us to Brogan and Angelica and the world of the vampire slave trade. They were all thoroughly enjoyable and I loved Brogan’s tough exterior but gentle heart towards Angelica.

Angelica is an accountant at a big firm, but has become bored with her life. After a little excitement and knowing there is usually a big strapping handsome man at Ocean Briggs, Angelica heads for a night of exhilaration. Talking with the bartender, Marcus, they discuss Brogan and Angelica is determined to meet this man. Marcus tells her what he knows of Brogan, which isn’t much. He meets with shady men, but seems to treat women well.

Brogan enters the club and zeroes in on Angelica. She builds her courage and heads to introduce herself. Brogan is all attitude and tells her it’s too dangerous for her to be there and to leave. Angelica kisses him and knows he’s interested, but still he pushes her away. Leaving embarrassed and humiliated, Angelica heads for her car, but has second thoughts and knows Brogan is who she wants.

Just as she is about to re-enter the club, two guys grab her, something is put over her nose and she blacks out. Angelica awakes to a horrific nightmare; she is bound by her arms and has been drugged to keep her docile. A woman is in the cell starts torturing her to see what Angelica’s limits are. The pain is so intense that Angelica blacks out again.

Brogan is in a club witnessing some horrific acts of torture to human slaves by vampires. He is trying to prove to the Starlin Group that he is a worthy member. Knowing he is being watched, Brogan gets some attention from a slave waitressing and that seems to be the winner. He receives the invitation he’s been working years towards. Now he can start to unravel the group and bring down Scorpion.

Brogan is at his first auction and is ready to buy his first slave. He is networking around the room looking at pictures of the potential slaves when he discovers Angelica’s picture is amongst them. Shocked to see her there, he doesn’t know what to do, obviously she was captured, his warning to her didn’t help.

Angelica is showing how feisty she is and the Starlin members are all eager to own her. Engles is the front man for Starlin and warned Brogan away, but when Angelica recognises Brogan in the crowd, her anger is immeasurable. Brogan has to win the bid on her, no matter the cost, he couldn’t live with himself if a real monster owned, tortured and killed her.

Brogan wins the bid, but now the real test begins. He has to show his dominance towards Angelica and it pains him to hurt her. In the end it will help her though and takes her back to his house.

In the coming instalments, Brogan has to attend events with Angelica in tow in costume. She also has to perform in front of people and surprises Brogan at every turn. The more time they spend together, the more they realise there is more than meets the eye.

Will Angelica be able to return to her normal hum drum life of money and numbers after experiencing a totally different world with Brogan? Will Brogan be able to let her go back after their intimate lifestyle the past few months? Can Brogan bring down the Starlin Group without getting Angelica or himself killed?

All three were fantastic, full on action, hot steamy scenes and horrific torture. I fell in love with Brogan and Angelica, they were so full of life, with pure intent and determination to make things right. I am really looking forward to reading more from this series, Caris Roane has a fantastic easy reading style that keeps me captivated from page one until the end. All adult vampire romance enthusiasts should pick up this series.

Review

For several years I've read excellent books by this author that usually feature super sexy vampires and yes her paranormal stories are enthralling to read. Now with Savage Chains she has written an e serial that will be released in three parts initially and is set to capture an even wider audience for her work as the world of Slaves and BDSM collide. Captured is the first offering and it's an excellent beginning to what's sure to be something to get your teeth (or fangs!) into!
Angelica is a woman whose life feels empty but she's not going to just sit around and let it pass her by. She's had her eye on the gorgeous but distant Reyes for quite some time but when she plucks up the courage to approach him he turns her away. Confused and hurt Angelica leaves the club but is kidnapped and awakens to find herself a prisoner and she's about to be sold as a sex slave!
Reyes is a vampire and he's spent many years trying to infiltrate the illegal sex slavery ring that's a part of vampire BDSM world. Humans are bought and sold and cruelly abused by sadistic masters but Reyes Is determined to end the suffering. What he hadn't expected was to see Angelica offered for sale and he simply can't just stand by and watch the feisty female suffer so he does the only thing he can, he buys her!
There's a plethora of these short ebooks that serialise a story recently and it's a great way to just dip in and sample an authors style of writing. Definitely not for impatient readers though so be prepared to wait for the next instalment or maybe even for the complete publication when it's available but I really enjoyed this and am already looking forward to reading more.
Angelica is not the sort of woman to surrender and be a submissive easily which unfortunately makes her a prime catch amongst those who enjoy dominating others. She would rather die then give in so it's up to Reyes to try to find a way to protect her. He's a guy whose suffered greatly in the past and well understands just how debauched some of those involved in the BDSM clubs can be. Humans don't survive very long in this twisted hungry world but the thought of Angelica bring defiled haunts him so he does what he was born to do he steps in to protect her!
Reyes is most definitely a man on a mission and it's something that's been part of his heart and soul for a very long time. Bringing down the slavery ring is all he's dreamed of but it's very personal and Reyes cannot let his attraction to Angelica blindside him. Angelica has depths though and is most assuredly not a weak willed female but in this world of pain how can Reyes convince her that he's trying to do the right thing? It's not an easy task and the cost could well be her blood!
A simply fabulous read that sucked me in and I now want to read more! I thought the author showed a light touch considering the subject matter but please be warned that not everything in this world is consensual . I'm fairly sure that Ms Roane will only increase the heat as this story unfolds and I'm looking forward to the ride!

Savage Chains: Captured is the first novella within the Men in Chains series that tells Reyes and Angelica’s story … at least the first part of it. As the blurb says, Reyes is seeking to bring down a sex slave ring that traffics in both human and vampire slaves. As he is about to make his play to secure his entry into the group so that he can gain the access he needs to be able to dismantle the operation, he comes face-to-face with his worst nightmare … the woman he cares for is up on the auction block and has caught the attention of one of the most sadistic members of the group. While I could understand Reyes’ commitment to his mission and his willingness to sacrifice the good of the few (Angelica) for the good of the many (all the slaves he could save), I was so relieved when he was unable to let Engles win.

While there is some serious chemistry between Reyes and Angelica, he is so convincing in his role as slaver that Angelica goes from thinking that he might be “The One” to being repulsed by him. This is further exacerbated as he attempts to bend her to his will without breaking her so that she presents as a well-behaved submissive and his cover isn’t blown. His methods make for an entertaining read, especially when he decides to use pleasure against her. Hot, yes. Effective, not at all. I would have felt bad for him if I hadn’t been laughing at his predicament. When he finally decides to tell Angelica what is going on, she’s more than happy to play the role of submissive and she plays it well.

Ms. Roane has crafted a well-written story that stands independently of the first book in the Men in Chains series. At no point did I feel lost and I was able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the “show” so to speak as the relationship between Reyes and Angelica develops in a most unusual set of circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed Savage Chains: Captured from beginning to end and look forward to reading the next Savage Chains novella.

Being the primary caretaker for an ailing mother and holding down a full time job is a lot for Angelica to handle, so when her Aunt drops by to give Angelica a break she takes the opportunity to take a walk on the wild side. Deciding it's time, she propositions Reyes offering him one night of passion he'll never forget. No strings attached.

Reyes is on a mission. A mission that doesn't include any sort of relationship with a naive sweet little girl like Angelina though he's tempted. Unfortunately she's caught the eye of the very people he's looking to infiltrate and they have no qualms taking what they want. Reyes will have to make a decision if it's more important to complete his mission or save Angelica when he finds out she's about to be sold at auction in a room full of hungry vampires.

This dark paranormal erotica read had lots of excitement, erotica, and open ended subplots that drew me in to want more and more only to end in a cliffhanger: To be continued.

I did appreciate the world building and characters in this story though because of the short length neither had much depth or development. The focus seemed to be on the BDSM/adult content action which I was fine with though any potential reader should be aware that these scenes do slant to the dark side of BDSM if that's an issue. However. As this is a short length read nothing very extreme or graphic is featured.

The thing that was surprising was that if this had been a full length novel that included a complete story (Reyes completes or fails his overall mission) I probably would have been a big fan of that book. I enjoyed the back story of Reyes and his long journey to get revenge and redemption. The three most hated words in a book for me: "to be continued"

Angelica has decided that Reyes is the one for her and will stop at nothing to have him. With that in mind she goes to a bar that he normally frequents on Friday nights. The attraction is their between the two of them so why does Reyes discourage taking it to a more intimate level? As Angelica is leaving the bar she is kidnapped by a sex slave ring and held as a prisoner until she is to be auction off.

Reyes has been working to infiltrate the exclusive sex ring and has finally made it. He finally receives an invitation to be a member and is preparing to purchase his first slave at the auction. When he arrives and finds that Angelica is on the auction block and not safe at home he is torn between loyalty to the job that will save thousands of innocent women and the one that he can’t forget.

How will Reyes save Angelica? Can he save her and himself? Will he be able to bring down the sex slave ring?

Hero – Brogan Reyes: 4 stars
Heroine –Angelica: 4 stars
Steam: 4 stars
Plot: 4 stars
Cliffhanger: Yes

Would I recommend this book: Yes! If you love a good vampire romance with a hotter than hot vampire this book is a must read for you. Not only is the vampire really sexy but he is also one of the good guys out to save the world from those that would enslave others.

Would I read other books by this author: Yes! I want to read the next book to see if Angelica will stay with Reyes.

Angelica is ready to shed her boring habits and life and go after what she really wants, the elusive Brogan Reyes. When she finally finds the courage, the evening does not go as planned when he rejects her. Feeling disappointed as she leaves the club, she never expected to be kidnapped and sold into an underground sex slave ring. Reyes turned away the one women that has captured his attention in a long time, for her own good. However, when he finds her exactly where he tried to keep her away from, he has to decide if she's worth the risk.

Savage Chains: Captured in the first installment in a serial combining vampires and the dark underground world of sex slavery. Being short, this novella gives us a taste and background to the story we're about to fully embark on. I didn't fall in love with it but again, when this one ends it truly feels like it's just beginning. There is a level of kink, but I personally refrain from calling it BDSM because while some will label it that I don't feel it's accurately authentic BDSM or even sadism, more just slavery. The characters were interesting and fairly relatable with chemistry that teases of very hot things to come. As a reader I didn't become attached to either yet but I'm interested to see where things progress so I will continue the trilogy. The world building is strangely realistic for such seedy surroundings involving the paranormal. The club and all the people in it felt like men and women you could walk past on the street.

This story was short (90 pages) and to the point with a cliffhanger that comes out in June 2014.
Reyes has always had feelings for Angelica and Angelica has had for Reyes. One night, Angelica was stolen by one of the largest, cruelest slave trade organizations known; the same organization that Reyes has tried to bring down for decades.
Reyes is pretending to be a slaver with a major underground slave trade/human trafficking organization. The night he goes to his first auction, is the night he sees Angelica on display to be put up for sale. Reyes as no choice but to buy her as his slave in order to save her. Angelica has no idea that Reyes is only pretending to be a slaver.
The reader gets both POVs in this story. I think I would have preferred if I just got Angelica’s POV with a few chapters or even paragraphs of Reyes’s, not a switch every other chapter. The reason is that I knew everything that the other character was thinking almost immediately which left little to no suspense about their feelings. I like the suspense of not knowing the other character is feeling.

Nonetheless, the author did a great job in 90 pages connecting me to these characters, understanding the cruelty of the situation, and making me want to know what happens next. I think that is very hard to do in a short period of time, but this author did a nice job. This is a paranormal with vampires. Some scenes may not be comfortable to read due to the subject of human trafficking and BDSM.

This is part one of a series of three novellas...

I really liked this more than I thought I would... and I'm all about the bad guys getting it in the end so I definitely need to continue on to see how this plays out in the next two installments.
This does contain dark content but it's very fade to black. I don't mind dark content but at the same time I don't necessarily want it explicitly described... so this story is working for me so far...
This is a secret hidden society of vampires who buy and sell human and vampire slaves for their own sadistic pleasure. Humans, however, usually do not live long under the hands of these sadists. Reyes, a vampire, was once a slave and is determined to put an end to this dark world. He has fully immersed himself into this world as a slaver to hopefully find the key to bringing it down. His plans go a little awry when Angelica, a human woman he knows and cares for, is kidnapped and put up for auction. He buys her in an desperate effort to save her life... but now she must conform or he risks being exposed.
So far I like the writing style... love the two main characters and I'm curious to see how this one man is going to single handedly bring down this sex ring. And, of course, I'm hoping they find an HEA... So, yep... I'm definitely on board for the next installment...

Angelica decides to let her hair down a bit and go after the man she can't stop thinking about. Unfortunately not only does Reyes reject her, but she ends up kidnapped and sold into sex slavery. Imagine her surprise when it turns out the vampire (yes it's a vampire underground sex ring) that buys her at the auction is Reyes. The bigger surprise is that Reyes is actually undercover in the underground trying to take them down. He's saved her life just by buying her, but the trick will be if he can save her and save everyone else from the other slavers as well.

There are some pretty smoking hot moments shared between Reyes and Angelica. No surprise there. Hint: sex slavery ring. Not sure that I go full force in describing it as BDSM, but they definitely get their kink on. Did I mention hot? I also love the story line on breaking up the vamp ring.

I have to admit that I requested this book because of the cover. I’ve followed Gary Taylor for a while now and couldn’t resist. :) Savage Chains: Captured is not a story that I would have normally picked based on the storyline but I was hooked right away and easily finished in a couple of hours. The two main characters were very well written and with the sudden ending, I immediately pre-ordered Scarred and Shattered to continue the story. Can’t wait to dive in!

Thank you Caris and St. Martin’s for a great read (and series)!

Brogan Reyes is a man that not many people know about. They all speculate but Angelica only sees a man she wants to spend the night with. However Angelica doesn't and can't understand what type of man Reyes really is and why he keeps coming to the club.

This book is interesting. You have vampires, a man on a mission to exact revenge on not just the person who almost destroyed him but the slavers who are still currently stealing and killing people.

This book was good I will more than likely pick up the rest in the series and wait patiently for the rest of the serials to come out.

Angelica knows what she wants and she wants one night of great sex with him and tonight is the night. She has dressed to kill and is ready to seduce him. He turns her down and sends her home but she decides that she is not ready to give up but on the way back in she is abducted. Days later she is auctioned and guess who is there. Yep you guessed it sadistic Vampires that want human women. Angelica knows that her world will never be the same, but wait she see's him and she is disgusted and he knows that he has got to have her.

Brogan Reyes is a former sex slave who is determined to take down the female who chained him as well as the entire sex slave ring kidnapping and torturing humans. Enter Angelica who wants to change her boring life by coming out of her shell and asking a man out. Brogan Reyes is that man. Unfortunately the night she approaches him, she is kidnapped by slavers.

I don't remember what happened in which installment so I'm just going to say that I read the three of them back to back to back. Yeah it's that good.
