Meta #6

Infinity's End

Rate this book
The end has come at last.
Connor Connolly's greatest battle is here, against the man who destroyed his world.

Connor Connolly thought he had saved humanity, but his victory came at a terrible price. Now he is stranded in a parallel world where his timeline was erased and John Jones, the man who murdered his father, is a respected superhero.

With no way home, Connor must join forces with Jones, the villain he hates beyond all reason, to journey across parallel worlds in a desperate bid to undo the apocalypse that shattered his life. Worlds of golden age heroes and human lizards and magic await him, each more bizarre yet wondrous than the last.

Yet in every world, Connor finds remnants of a mysterious evil lurking, waiting to consume all existence in shadow.

Out of time and out of chances, Connor must confront his darkest demons for one final battle to decide the fate of the Metaverse itself. Sacrifice and betrayal await, and nothing will deter Connor from finishing this war the way he always knew it must end - facing John Jones, one-on-one, for the last time.

The Meta series reaches its stunning conclusion in an epic clash between heroes and villains locked in a struggle for survival across the multiverse. Connor's journey comes full circle at last to answer the question of who he's meant to hero or villain? This time the choice is his alone, and the cost will change everything.

This book was a painfully frustrating read...
I often got the impression that the book never actually benefited from the input of an editor or even that it was proofread.
Mid and near the end of the book I often had the impression that either the book was written by multiple people or something as the story progression is all over the place, the ending feels extremely rushed, and the way the powers were considered makes no sense at all as they do not tend to be consistent at all. One moment the MC is a weak dude "just because" and the next moment he is extremely strong, again "just because".
Even the way Jones is portrayed - in the first few books he was close in power to the Governor but now he is magically stronger "just because".
The ending feels disappointing, to say the least, we went through 6 books with so-called "superpowers" just for all of that to go away at the end of the series. Imagine Hogwarts where at the end ALL MAGIC GOES AWAY for everyone. It feels honestly pointless and disappointing, to say the least.

Often I had the impression that the author does not keep score of the date as at one point it's mentioned that the MC travels to the 91s millennium, then it's the 71st millennium, then its year 9000...my god make up your mind!
Last but not least the understanding of physics and astrophysics that the author has seems rudimentary AT best.
For instance: celestial objects that you can see with the naked eye in the present are simply the projection of said object on the cosmic background. If you see a planet light years away NOW, you do not see it in real-time, you see what it looked like and where it was millennia ago. In that time the planet most likely MOVED, changed, or may have suffered profound ecological or geological changes...

If you wish to read the equivalent of a superhero adventure series written by a 12-year-old, for 12-year-olds that ends in a highly unsatisfactory way then this is the series for you...

In conclusion, this was wild! I didn't think I'd like the different worlds he visited, but I found it fun. I loved where he met an old Jones; that was awesome. Then fighting an evil him was crazy too. However, I feel that the pacing is way too fast for this to conclude the story. Midnight's death felt out of nowhere and didn't need to happen. I liked the fight with Jones, and the inclusion of the previous books on how to destroy Meta Bands was used. If there was a build-up to a few of these moments, I think the impact would have been greater. Ultimately, I enjoyed this series because I had no idea superheroes would work as books.

This series has a close place to my heart. I remember reading the first book in my early middle school days and now finishing the series with Infinity’s End today is a bittersweet experience. I loved this series as a whole and love the work Tom Reynolds has put in. Definitely will be handing these books down to my future children, 9.2/10 series.

The parallel world stuff was a lot of spinning in one place, and too much telling not showing.
