“Something About Alexa” by Leanne Hockley takes readers back to Forks, Washington (yes folks, back to “Twilight” country) and I must say I did not expect to enjoy the book as much as I did. While I expected we were about to head into another vampire (since the main character is a dead ringer for Edward Cullen) and werewolf story, I ended up completely stunned by the storyline and the writing in this book.

Jayden James has lived in Forks for all of his 17 years. While it can be an exhausting place to be, given the success of the “Twilight” stories and the town’s annual Forever Twilight in Forks Festival, Jayden finds the woods in the town to be his escape and he loves it there. Being in the woods means no one mistakes him for the star of the “Twilight” movies, he can avoid his alcoholic mother, and he can avoid the boy in town who bullies him relentlessly. The woods are Jayden’s refuge from his life and all the problems in it. The woods are also the place where he first sees Alexa, the new girl in school.

Unfortunately, Jayden’s woods have also just become a place where murders are happening. As Alexa and Jayden learn more about each other and fall in love they must also deal with the recent deaths in the town of Forks and what is really going on. Jayden is worried about his own episodes that cause him to think he may have a dark side he does not know about or understand.

The mysterious Alexa has her own concerns about her past and the person she really is now. Add in Alexa’s very mysterious parents and one of Jayden’s closest friends who seems to have a lot of his own secrets, and readers are given a very interesting and scary new look at the town of Forks. What is really happening and how will it end? That is something you will have to read the book to understand but I assure you it is definitely worth the ride.

Author Leanne Hockley has given her readers an absolutely captivating, mysterious, and well-written story that will grab you from the first page and will not let go. It is filled with suspense, science, romance, and murder and will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The twists and turns in this story that lead to the incredible and unexpected conclusion are amazing. In addition, the descriptive writing by this author is fabulous and makes the reader feel like they are there, whether it is in the middle of the woods in Forks or on the beach near town smelling the ocean and hanging out.

“Something About Alexa” is a uniquely different and completely mesmerizing novel that will keep every reader guessing until the very end and I highly recommend it to everyone, whether you are a “Twilight” fan or not. With an amazing storyline and completely captivating characters, I assure you this is one that should not be missed. I cannot wait to see what comes next for Jayden and the others.

Something About Alexa by Leanne Hockley transports readers to the familiar setting of Forks, Washington, but with a unique spin. The protagonist, Jayden James, bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Edward Cullen of "Twilight," yet his life contrasts starkly with that of a heartthrob. He contends with bullying, his mother's alcoholism, and mysterious nightly wanderings. His mundane existence takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Alexa, igniting an instantaneous and intense connection.

The narrative interweaves a suspenseful romance with the backdrop of a town haunted by unsolved murders, raising questions about the line between reality and the supernatural tales of "Twilight." As the plot unfolds, readers are treated to a cleverly executed twist reminiscent of Frankenstein, adding depth and intrigue to the story.

Hockley's writing is distinguished by her meticulous attention to detail, which adds richness to the narrative, even if it occasionally slows the pace. The characters are crafted with care, particularly Jayden, whose struggles are portrayed with a relatable depth. Alexa emerges as a figure shrouded in mystery, challenging readers' expectations. The supporting characters, such as Jayden's friends Miriam and Brody, and Alexa's parents, Dr. Sven Johansson and Magenta, add layers to the story, highlighting themes of familial devotion and support. The novel's strengths shine in its compelling characters and the innovative fusion of familiar and new elements in its plot, enriching the narrative even as it indulges in extensive detail.

Something About Alexa is a riveting young adult urban fantasy novel, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved setting with an intriguing blend of romance and mystery.

Head back to Forks, Washington in this YA paranormal novel that is part Twilight, part Frankenstein.
🐺
Jayden uses the woods behind his home to escape his mother’s drinking, but also he’s been waking up in those woods, covered in blood with no memory of how he got there. When he first sees the new girl Alexa he’s immediately drawn to her. When mysterious murders start popping up around town, Jayden fears the worst, but with Alexa’s help they try to prove it’s not him committing these heinous acts.

This read like fanfiction and also has me wondering if it’s even allowed to use so much information from the actual Twilight book The cover is striking and it’s not a retelling, more of an extension of the book of what might happen years later. Still. I wish the author had been more original.

CW: blood, death, gore, alcoholism, car accident (recounted), hospitalization

There’s a good YA ‘paranormal’ yarn lurking between the covers of “Something About Alexa” but the book would have likely benefited by some judicious editing - perhaps a hundred pages to tighten up the plot so that reader spends a lot less time in forest at night with Jayden James - a troubled youth who becomes obsessed with a new girl in his 12th grade class - Alexa. Love at first sight! There are a lot of plot twists and turns and repetitions that deal peripherally with the fact that there are locally a number of unsolved murders of young girls, and because Jayden is plagued by nocturnal sleepwalking episodes that he cannot remember, he becomes convinced that he may be involved in the murders. Red herrings abound but eventually Hockley provides an exciting finale and the ultimate revelation about the truth of Alexa.

Awesome read!! The characters started this story out of the gate. They grabbed your attention and immediately you wanted to know more about their simple fun life in a small town. The plot gripped you from the beginning. I was impressed how the characters made you want to read more. Without that some books can drag along. I had read twilight so I was anticipating what could or would come. The love the support the compassion in the story filled my heart. Sad ending but just the beginning… right?!

Fabulous page turner

Something about Alexa grabbed me from the first page. The characters are well drawn and the description of place is so vivid, I could see the forest and smell the ocean. I enjoyed the degree of detail and ties back to Twilight, and what Forks has become post series. The author has done her research. The plot kept me guessing well into the novel. The ending took me by surprise, in the best way. This is a great book for folks who like their stories rich, their characters relatable, and with suspense, myth and science rolled in. You don't need to have read the Twilight series to enjoy this book, though readers who are familiar will appreciate the allusions. A wonderful debut from an author worth watching.
