It's one thing to defend a client everyone thinks is guilty ... it's quite another to defend him if you think so too.
Former ADA turned defense lawyer Lainey Abbott is beginning to worry. It looks like the rest of her professional life will be spent representing dope boys in stop-and-frisk cases, just to help keep the lights on at her and Greg Knight’s law practice. Then a star football player from an elite college shows up at their door.
A young, beautiful classmate, with whom he had an erratic three-month fling, was just found dead, and right away he’s in the NYPD’s crosshairs. Could be a fairly straightforward case to defend. Or maybe not. He's Black, and the missing girl is white.
Without hesitation, Lainey agrees to represent him. She and Greg are hungry for a case like this because they know firsthand how unequal American justice can be. Soon, the ‘straightforward’ case becomes much more complicated than they ever imagined. And if that weren’t bad enough, Lainey’s relationship with Det. Russ Sanders might be unraveling. He isn’t crazy about her working on criminal defense, and worse yet with a former lover as a law partner.
But the biggest test of all is yet to come, and once again, it's about her missing sister, Stephanie.
I thought I knew who the culprits were in this storyline earlier in the tale. The author did a great job of misdirection in the tale. Who killed Kelsey, and what about Lainey's sister? What happened to her? Do you see what I mean? The two murder plots running simultaneously wow, that was good writing. Kurt Blaze, the star athlete was being accused of murdering his tutor, and their different backgrounds added to the twists in the plot. You will recall, the first story featured Lainey Abbott searching for her sister who'd disappeared. I expected The second story would fill in some blanks and blaze on with this edition. The backstory with Russ and Lainey kept being pushed further in the background as much as possible. Then the side notes with Lainey and Greg added to my mixed feelings for the ex-lovers turned law partners. Mostly, I liked and enjoyed the journey the author took to bring us to this point. There will be a part three to close out Kurt and Kelsey's story, now that we know who did the deed. We now need to find her sister Steph's killer. 5+ stars...
A decent legal/mystery story. I was caught up in the story and really wanted to know whodunnit. (As usual I was unable to guess LOL). I liked Lainey's relationship with Russ and the way it is growing.
I did feel the book finished a bit abruptly, and I was also a little disappointed that we didn't find out . But otherwise, an enjoyable read, and I will definitely read the next one if the series continues.
I think it would be better for new readers to read #1, Jane Doe Black first, because there are plenty of references to events and characters from that book that would probably be confusing otherwise.
I'm not going to lie, I was not expecting to end up liking this series (I hope that's what this is!) as much as I do. Especially considering this book in particular was triggering as f*ck. Finding out the details of how Kelsey, the victim in this installment was killed, hit a little too close to home and had me questioning if I would even be able to get through to the end of this book, despite the fact that I was actually enjoying it.
But! After a few good cries and sleeping on it, I felt better this morning and breezed through to the end. And BOY was it a ride!
I don't even have much to say other than the fact that I am SO impressed on so many different levels by the writing, and cleverness in the storytelling of this series. I thought I had everything all pegged and figured out after finishing Jane Doe Black, only to find out that I had it all wrong, which made me question my instincts and intuition about what was happening in Reversible Error and I juuuust! Nia Forrester did her BIG ONE with this book. Because I'm feigning for answers right now. Like so much was answered but then SO many other questions have been raised following those answers.
On the one hand, with this new potential revelation we have about what happened to Lainey's sister Steph I just keep thinking WOW! And on the other hand, with getting more information on the case in THIS book, I just keeping thinking WHY!? So many questions! So many theories running through my head but none of them really making sense or adding up and so I just need Nia to reveal what the deal is!
Also, can I just say...the way this book is written, how it leans into the world of lawyers, detectives, etc., is REALLY refreshing. I've read books that have featured lawyers and police and even crimes/cases before, but that all played a background role to either the romance or character drama. But this series is REALLY about mystery and investigation and the behind-the-scenes that goes into trying cases, solving murders, etc. I really felt like I was reading a story about a real case, real lawyers, real people.
Again, I am just SO impressed! And while this definitely isn't a genre I would gravitate towards regularly, I do hope that we'll be getting the next installment soon. Because I need answers! I need to know what actually went down with Steph since what I'd ASSUMED I figured out after the first book, proved NOT to be the case. And I really need to understand the WHY and HOW of everything that happened to Kelsey in this book and how all the pieces fit together.
SO good - tough, but excellent way to end the year.
Book 2 did not disappoint and I was engaged from the first word eager to learn what becomes of Lainey, Russ and Stephanie’s killer, only to be transfixed with a brutal crime that had me making my list of suspects immediately of another cutthroat murderer.
Lainey is the opposition going against her former colleagues, defending the accused working with her ex lover, Greg. She’s found her place, she’s content, and has learned to accept Stephanie’s death trying to move to a better places in her life…sober. She’s headstrong on getting to the truth of both cases and question their innocence and guilt. I love her growth, strength, determination, resilience and the bond she shares with Russ who is her rock that keeps her grounded and accountable.
While we are now left with two unsolved murders, I don’t feel like the story lacked closure because of the very last chapter, where we get the victims POV. It’s a chilling descriptive account as it’s happening to them and I felt like I was watching the murder take place a second time. Right now, I want justice!
Nia Forrester does a great job depicting crime and her pen game is judge, jury and executioner. She gets the details of the characters idiosyncrasies mixed with drama and suspense of a compelling story that’s tragic, full of thrills, lies and deception.
This series continues to check all the boxes that makes a crime story really excell. This mystery read is a page turner, an absolute 5 star read and I can’t wait for the final installment.
This author will remain my top favorite as she has proven that she can handle any trope that she decides to craft. Lainey is a character that challenges you in ways unimaginable. One minute you are rooting for her and the next you are scratching your head because what in the world is going on in her psyche. And for her to have two solid men in her life...what are the odds? We discover more about her sister disappearance from Lainey's perspective and we hope the truth will come to light soon. The case of Kurt "Blaze" Johnson had me on the edge of my seat and I wonder what is the District of Attorney is up to. I loved how this author executes parallelism in her book showing that while we may be different we are more similar to each other. Looking forward to the next book. This author is a great storyteller.
I never leave reviews because I feel like the author does not read them. However, every book you have written has made me want more. I feel like it is three to four stories in this one book. Lainey is accepting that her sister is dead, the guilt of moving on in life with Russ, balancing work ( from the good/bad) and what does justice looks like. I read this book all day. It left me stunned at the end of who was the killer. Keep writing these stories. I love all the legal stuff and hopefully you can write something medical. All I can say is oh my goodness this book is excellent.
So this is the 2nd book in this series and we see Lainey Black assume her new role as a defense attorney. She and her partner Greg, take on a case about a football player and the girl he had a casual physical relationship with who ends up dead. While Lainey is working this case, she is also learning about her sister’s death and that it was a homicide. So many moving parts and I love how we see one murder solved and one other is a continuation. Love how the books end with the victim showing what happened to them.
Fantastic book Ms. Forrester! Can’t wait to read more Lainey Black.
This compelling story held me to the end and not once did I know…Reversible Error takes you on a journey through the court system…how it all comes together or unravels but more importantly it’s a look at justice in America and how much who you are and who you know—matters. But it also makes guilt and innocence a muddled gray area.
Lainey is conflicted by the case from the minute Blaze becomes a client because she’s knew to defense and still thinking as a prosecutor. But as things become clearer it’s hard to know with any certainty where this is all going but Nia Forrester paces the story beautifully until the jaw dropping end.
Nia has settled quite nicely into this new writing genre with the second release in the Lainey Abbott series. To say it appears that this was her calling all along would be a disservice, since she's also been able to craft some pretty darn good contemporary romance stories with just as much character development, attention to detail and grandeur! This time out, Lainey is on the other side of the court room! And while her sister's case still plays out in the background, we get to witness her new partnership with a former fling in Greg. We also get to see her try to navigate her relationship with the ever present and steady Russ, all the while being pulled in more different directions than one sober human should be subjected to. That's yet another layer to this already complex character. But she manages it quite efficiently! The storyline made this a page-turner. The outcome anything but predictable! And that's what elevated this release beyond just another mystery suspense story where you're able to figure who done it before the end! What would be the fun in that? Congratulations on another compelling release Nia!! You have definitely arrived in this new lane. And I'm hoping the plan is for you to get comfortable here!
OMG that ending. I appreciate the ending of both books in the eyes of the most mentioned character. I’m seeing the growth of Lainey; although, I’m not sure I like how she does Russ. I mean she’s going through ALOT but hopefully she’s getting there. I appreciated the no-drinking Lainey so much more. Kurt, I kept going back and forth just like Lainey; I couldn’t make up my mind, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for the outcome. So ready for the next book and to see the real culprit of Stephanie.
Nia weaves together another intriguing tale of love, lies, deception and the pursuit of justice. Lainey, a former prosecutor turned defense attorney is back with a case that challenges her from the very beginning. Kurt Blaze is a popular black college athlete accused of the murder of his former lover, a white student named Kelsey. As the dynamic of their complicated relationship unfolds, Lainey struggles with Kurt’s innocence while still trying to come to terms with her sister’s unsolved murder. Reversible Error is a great read with all the makings of a courtroom drama. I hope there is at least one more book coming.
I can only hope there would be a part 3. So I waited to read the first part of this story, till this part came out. These stories are so consuming and so good, I stayed up all night to read both books. I must say part one left me really sad but I was happy I was able to move right into this story. I have to give it up to this writer she did a great job. It was like I was watching a series of law and order.
I still don’t like Lainey. She still has issues from her childhood that she needs to resolve maybe then I can muster up some sympathy for her. Absolutely love Russ and thank goodness she didn’t cheat on him with Greg again. Besides that I enjoy the storyline to a certain point it’s so typical black athlete white girl like black women aren’t good enough even though he had a black girlfriend. And still nothing about the sister she discarded. Sounds like I’m bashing I’m not Greg was interestingly funny. In the next installment Lainey better not hurt Russ.
This feels like a re-read to me. My week was so disjointed that I read this in fits and shorts so it was hard to follow the course of action. Nia is an excellent author so it wouldn’t be fair to rate this book because I couldn’t pay attn. No rating for now— ima re-read it when my head is on straight and can enjoy it.
This was so encompassing. The story snatches your attention from the beginning and holds it until the end. I felt like I was inside the pages, in the scenes, I was so engrossed. Amazing job as usual. Tip of the hat to you, Ms Forrester.
I’m ready for the next installment! Nia Forrester always comes with the best thrilling stories and I love all her books…this one was one of my favorites!
Just whew. Reversible Error had me hooked from the first page to the last. You can feel Lainey’s every emotion as she pushes through each day. Russ is a solid guy, fingers crossed that he remains in her life. AMAZING book. I can’t wait for the next installment.
Nia Forrester has the ability to pull meso deep in to a story that I feel slightly bereft at the end. I just want. I can’t wait until the next book in this series!
I was eagerly waiting for this book after finishing Jane Doe, Black, but it was a bit of a letdown to me. I always struggle with whether or not to include grammatical errors/typos/formatting in my reviews because they don't always affect the story, but they are big deals to me as a writer and editor. I felt like this really needed another round of editing.
Kurt was frustrating to say the least, and I honestly wouldn't have blamed Lainey for dropping him as a client. I felt like Lainey's interactions with Kurt got really repetitive as far as him withholding information and then being surprised that Lainey was frustrated (here is where another round of editing would have come in handy). However, she and Greg worked well together as a sort of good cop/bad cop team. Ultimately though, I felt like the ending wasn't really earned and was a bit abrupt.
It was nice to see some progress on Steph's case, and I like Carolina Ruiz's character so far. I'm assuming there's going to be a third book as that story isn't finished yet and, if there is, I hope it wraps up that plotline. I don't know that Steph's case really needs to go beyond three books.
Nia Forrester had me locked in to the story from the first paragraph and I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. I got through the first half of the book, and literally dreamed about about it and had to immediately dive back in and finish the next day. Although, I discovered her work in Black romance/women’s fiction, and she is undoubtedly my favorite fiction writer in that genre, I have loved both books in this series and can’t wait for more. She brings a humanity to such dark stories. And the suspense she builds in the background always leave me truly guessing at the end.
That Nia Forrester is a beast! When she released the first book in the serial, I was reluctant to take the dive because I don’t like murder mysteries or suspense but hey when it’s one of your favorite authors, you trust them and take the leap.
Here I am, book two, totally vested, hanging on to every word and can’t stop even if I wanted to and once again it proves that Nia is the real deal.
I live for a Nia Forrester romance novel but with this series I could care less about the romance aspect although it does help to balance the tragedies and the darkness associated with the subject matter.
I am so salty that there is no conclusion of either story but if she’s writing, I am reading and will await the next book 😬
I’m a Nia Forrester savant and this book didn’t disappoint. It’s SO hard to pace a thriller like this! But this is probably the most excellent paced book I’ve ever read. I looked down and saw I was 50% done and was like damn!!! I’m moving through this hoe!! I will say that I’m happy that the love triangle wasn’t played up. It’s Russ & it’s always gone be Russ period. I’m pissed that there’s a 3rd book because I deeply hate series but I’ll wait for this one.
Wow, this was a tv law drama in book form. Lainey does find out her sister is dead and her body is actually found, but no killer is identified. While dealing with that, she and her law partner have a case similar to what happened to her sister. They are hired to defend a young man ( Kurt Blaze) accused of killing a young college girl (Kelsey) who went missing for weeks and who was dumped and discovered weeks later. This is such suspenseful series and seeing as we have to find out who killed Lainey's sister as well as a final conclusion to Kurt's story. The love story between Kurt and Russ while present is not the main focus of this book. Great read, and I can't wait for book 3.
Interesting part two to the series. Kurt annoyed me by continually not telling his lawyers critical info as they are trying to save him from guilty verdict and prison time. I hope Lainey and Russ makes it. I think he’s good for her. Hope she gets closure for Stephanie’s murder. The new cop on the case is way more competent
Very interesting turn of events. Looking forward to book 3
This book was so good, I can’t wait for the next one. I’m ready for Lainey to find out who killed her sister and I want to see where her and Russ’ relationship goes. I had no idea who killed Kelsey until the very end so bravo to Ms. Forrester.
In this installment we find Lainey settling into a manageable routine with her new venture into being partners with her ex-lover and fellow lawyer, Greg—until she receives a phone call from the detective handling her missing sister case. Then Lainey has to hang on for dear life and still keep her head in the game of pursuing new business clients.
It's a good thing she's in a more stable relationship with her detective boyfriend, Russell and she knows it. There is no room for mistakes with him this time around, he won't tolerate how she handled things in the past. When he asks her a burning question and she's hesitant, it makes him feel some type of way. She's reeling from the evidence that her sister suffered a traumatic experience.
When Lainey gets herself together, she initiates a get-together with her close girlfriends that she shunned during her mourning period. She wants to update them on her sister. When she reveals what she's learned so far she's given a group hug and the requisite murmurings one would expect from people who have no clue as how it feels to have a loved one gone under mysterious circumstances.
They move on to other topics, but not one of them says to her ... what do you need from me? Or, simply there's no way I'm letting you be alone tonight, I'm staying over or you're coming home with me and you can vent, yell and cry, all you want on my shoulders. Instead, their life goes on—one friend is going home to go to sleep, the other one is meeting her fiancé for dinner and the third one I don't remember what she had to do. Really? Lainey needs better friends and for the record, no woman can have three best friends whom also like one another—it's just not possible.
When a burgeoning, potentially high profile murder case lands in their lap, Lainey's business life intersects with her personal life when her friend asks a favor of her. There is lots of judgements, regrets and recriminations in this story. The murder case begins to take a backseat to what Lainey learns more about what happened to her sister and what we learn as readers. I prayed that she didn't turn to alcohol or Greg to numb her pain. What I thought I knew from Book One wasn't what I thought I knew, and this new information shook my World, to it's core!
What I especially like about the series is that near the end, it clues you in to who the killer may be, however, don't just take the words written on the page at face value, you still have to put the pieces together and remember, murder is usually about motive and opportunity. Highly, highly Recommended: Read It!
The last book left off with Lainey putting her life back together and trying to settle into the thought that her sister just might be dead. Leaving her job as an Assistant District Attorney and taking Greg, a former lover, up on his offer to work alongside him as a defense attorney. This is all done much to Russ’ chagrin.
While we know what happened to Steph. Lainey still doesn’t. That is until her body washes up on shore and autopsy reports her death as a homicide. Although she felt it, knowing it doesn’t make Lainey feel good, but she fights the urge to find refuge in her old buddy – alcohol.
Another body of a missing college student is found. This time Lainey’s role is to defend the star football player being accused of murdering her. This is all too reminiscent of what happened with her sister, not to mention, Lainey’s former role as an ADA makes it hard for her to shift her perspective to being a defense attorney.
But she tries despite Kurt “Blaze” Johnson, the star football player, omitting germane details that she discovering by happenstance.
There is just so much suspense. Even when you think you know who did what, you really don’t. I am really so darn stunned.
