**Book Review: The Sturm Awakens (The Last Battlefield for Light and Darkness Book 1) by Marvin North**
"The Sturm Awakens" by Marvin North is an electrifying start to what promises to be an epic fantasy series, "The Last Battlefield for Light and Darkness." Set in the tumultuous world of Antorris, the novel introduces readers to a realm where the balance between Light and Darkness has been catastrophically disrupted, leading to widespread corruption and chaos.
Fifty years before the events of the novel, Antorris was plunged into darkness, unleashing nightmarish monsters. When the Light emerged, it was no savior—it was just as destructive, consuming life with its searing radiance. This dual onslaught left the world Corrupted, a place where survival is a constant struggle against both forces.
At the heart of the story is Inos Sevrence, a Corruption Hunter tasked with eradicating the afflicted beasts of Light and Dark. Inos is a compelling protagonist—skilled, determined, and harboring a dark secret: she herself is Corrupted. Her ability to harness the Darkness she fights against sets her apart, making her a target of fear and suspicion among her peers. North crafts Inos with nuance, presenting her as a fierce warrior battling not only external threats but also the internal stigma of her corruption.
The plot thickens with the introduction of an amnesiac boy who possesses unusual magical powers. This enigmatic character adds layers of mystery and intrigue, as his forgotten past and unique abilities hint at a deeper connection to the cosmic battle unfolding. Together, these two outcasts form an unlikely alliance, united by their fight against the pervasive corruption.
North's world-building is immersive and detailed, painting a vivid picture of a land ravaged by the conflicting forces of Light and Darkness. The looming threat of war between nations adds to the tension, creating a sense of urgency and impending doom. However, the true genius of the narrative lies in its cosmic scope—the Lords of Light and Darkness are locked in a celestial feud, and Antorris is their battleground. This grander conflict elevates the stakes, making the characters' struggles feel both intimate and universally significant.
The author's prose is both lyrical and gripping, capturing the bleak beauty of a world on the brink of annihilation. The action sequences are intense and well-choreographed, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Yet, North also delves into the emotional and psychological toll of living in such a corrupted world, adding depth to the characters' experiences.
In "The Sturm Awakens," Marvin North has crafted a masterful blend of fantasy and adventure, populated by richly drawn characters and set against a backdrop of cosmic warfare. As Inos and her companions navigate their perilous path, readers will find themselves deeply invested in their journey. This book is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy, promising an exhilarating ride through a world where the lines between good and evil are perpetually blurred.
Overall, "The Sturm Awakens" is a standout debut that sets the stage for an epic saga. With its compelling characters, intricate world-building, and high-stakes drama, it is sure to captivate readers and leave them eagerly awaiting the next installment.
In The Sturm Awakens, Marvin North transports us to the captivating world of Antorris, a realm besieged by a sinister phenomenon known as the Corruption. This blight transforms wildlife into monstrous abominations, and at the heart of the battle against it is Inos Severance, a Corruption Hunter. Inos harbors a secret that gives her an edge against her prey but also poses a grave danger to her. During a hunt, she encounters Kosinki, a boy with amnesia and unprecedented magical abilities, who saves her using powers he doesn't understand. Together, they must harness their unique gifts to combat a worsening and evolving threat that stems from a much larger issue.
From the outset, North plunges readers into the action, opening with a gripping battle against a corrupted creature. The story's immediate intensity and unexpected twists make for an exhilarating start to an enthralling adventure. The world of Antorris is richly detailed, featuring a blend of magic and machinery across diverse locations and societies. The myriad races, each with their own distinct appearances, beliefs, and histories, reflect real-world issues of racism and prejudice, adding depth to the narrative. North's meticulous world-building is evident in the unique flora and fauna, enriching the story with every detail. The inclusion of drawings, character write-ups, quotes, and snippets of knowledge scattered throughout the book enhances the reading experience, offering a guidebook-like glimpse into the vast lore and mythology of Antorris. Despite the engaging epic battles, the frequency of these action sequences can feel overwhelming at times. Longer intervals between fights would have allowed for more development of the non-combative elements of the story. While the detailed character information is appreciated, placing it at the end of the book could have prevented potential spoilers and maintained the element of surprise.
For fans of heroic tales filled with epic fight scenes set in a vividly imagined world, The Sturm Awakens is a must-read. North has crafted an extraordinary realm with high stakes and continuous revelations. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this remarkable series.
I really enjoyed the world and character building of this story and am looking forward to the rest of the journey.

The high fantasy story was intriguing and gets you rooting for the survival of Antorris.
I absolutely loved Inos’ father, who gave me Beauty and the Beast Maurice vibes. I also enjoyed the range of landscapes and creatures throughout the story and the unexpected artwork in the book.

Favourite Quotes:
I'm doin' my best, but there's always somethin', huh?" Inos gave a weak smile. There's always something, indeed.
"You don't need to be wanted to be remembered."
"Got it. So, the sky's not safe, the sea's not safe, and the Dalikian Army could invade us any day now. What are we to do?" Inos sighed. "Hope and wish and pray?" Rufin said with a sarcastic chuckle.
The Deciding had begun, and all the universe would become their battlefield.
"I'll never give up, Kosi. We could be at world's end, facing the fiercest of foes, and I would still die to protect this place.
"Commander Baldwin, I am a Corruption Hunter. I do not care for race or politics—my only enemy is Corruption. This Lord, Hecatomb Valz, may require us all to forfeit our lives to defeat him. I will do so gladly, even if those who I fight alongside consider me an enemy—I will still fight to rid our world of Corruption." Inos picked her twin axes out of the sand and faced the coming foes.
I believe that kindness should be cherished, and wickedness eradicated—because we fight for all the world, all the kindness in the world, against all the wickedness."
Reading The Sturm Awakens was an interesting experience. The beginning took me a little while to get into; the world‑building is detailed, and at times it felt heavy, but once I settled into the rhythm, I started to appreciate the scope Marvin North is aiming for.
Inos Sevrence is a character who stood out to me. She’s strong, but what made her memorable was the way she carries the weight of being different. That sense of stigma and isolation gave her journey more emotional depth than I expected. The relationship with the amnesiac boy added a layer of mystery that kept me curious.
The pacing isn’t always smooth; there are moments where the story slows down, but those pauses give space for character development, which I valued. The larger conflict between Light and Darkness is ambitious, and while it sometimes felt overwhelming, it also gave the book a unique angle compared to other fantasy stories.
What I appreciated most was the way the book challenges simple ideas of good versus evil. It’s not about clear sides; it’s about survival, resilience, and navigating complexity. That made the story linger with me after finishing.
Overall, The Sturm Awakens isn’t perfect, but it’s a solid start to the Light and Darkness series. It left me curious about how the world and characters will grow in the next installments.
I thought the world was vastly unique, especially in the over saturated fantasy genre books we see a lot today. Unique monsters and magic system, it is reminiscent of magic that is popular in manga and anime. My only complaint about this book is the dialogue. Maybe it was a stylistic choice, but it felt stilted. Even in arguments the characters kept a formality that felt unnatural at times. Other than that, good book and would recommend to lovers of the fantasy genre who are craving something different.
A woman works as a corrupt beast killer. She goes wherever she is needed to protect the people. One day she finds a boy who claims to not know who he is or where he is from. Together they work together to make places safer. But they both have something they are hiding.
Received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway. Nice start to a series. Very fast paced and really got into the main two characters. Not a fan of ending a book on a cliffhanger, but that's my own bias. I am looking forward to the next installment.
