Each of the 3J series I’ve read has been filled with complex legal cases. Attorney 3J is inventive, smart and resourceful when she defends her clients. She has a network of other people who are skilled at investigation, technological sleuthing, deep dive snooping and uncovering motives. Her boyfriend, occasional investigator, has experience and adores her. Set in Kansas City the divide between the have and have-nots and race is historically wide. The term Redlining was still in play. A nonprofit who’d historically borrowed from the bank would buy land and build houses for those underserved areas. Now a change in ownership has created two polar opposite brothers at the bank funding the nonprofit. Greed threatens to destroy their family’s legacy of community support. The brothers goals are so far apart more than money is at stake. A bold act threatens lives. The nonprofit has retained 3J hoping for a legal remedy to save their business. The only option under these time constraints is bankruptcy. The aptly titled bankruptcy ‘cram down’ strategy was a fascinating piece of the law I wasn’t familiar with. I always glean new legal terminology, new procedures and laws reading this series. In a long ago career I worked at a small town attorney’s practice. My primary job was billing, no involvement in the legal work. After a time I assisted in filling out bankruptcy information, so this story was especially fascinating to me. There’s a lot more complexity in the non-profit aspect than the simple farmer/rancher filings I’d seen. The plot is tense and fast paced. The extremes between those with good intentions and those who only cared for the Almighty dollar were razor sharp. I thoroughly enjoyed the legal maneuvering and look forward to more of 3J.
What begins as a seemingly straightforward legal issue takes a riveting twist when one of the bank's owners, Amadi, mysteriously vanishes, casting his brother Jordan into the spotlight as the primary suspect. Suddenly, a tale with initial legal implications evolves into a full-blown investigation, setting the stage for a high-stakes race against time for 3J to save both Amadi and Adobe. Although Cram Down is the third installment in the series, it stands on its own as an enthralling read. It was my first foray into this series, and I found it immensely enjoyable, leaving me eager to explore the preceding volumes. The allure of such an exceptional novel is that it leaves you yearning for more long after you've turned the last page. In my view, what truly elevates a book's engagement factor is a well-rounded, authentic character capable of resonating with a diverse range of readers, and 3J undoubtedly fulfills this role. Coupled with a meticulously crafted and original plot that seamlessly blends investigative, legal, and action-packed elements, Cram Down becomes an unputdownable novel. Suspense and intrigue take center stage, delivered through a series of expertly executed twists and turns that will captivate you, keeping you teetering on the edge of your seat until the final revelation. This riveting and entertaining read will leave an indelible impression. It's a must-read for anyone seeking an immersive and thrilling literary experience, and I highly recommend it to all enthusiasts of the genre.
An unputdownable novel Prepare to be swept into the thrilling world of Cram Down where the story unfolds in the heart of Kansas. Readers are introduced to Josephine Jillian Jones, an attorney with a penchant for handling a myriad of cases, finds herself thrust into a complex and perilous legal conundrum. Through the pages of this book, readers are taken on a fascinating journey that sheds light on the inner workings of legal professionals, and I found myself deeply engrossed in their craft. Author Mark Shaiken delivers unexpected turns and twists that will keep you guessing until the very end. The plot, coupled with realistic and engaging character dialogues, draws you into the heart of the conversation, making the reading experience effortless. Suspense permeates the narrative, making the resolution all the more intriguing. The meticulous construction of the case and the gradual revelation of the investigation's intricacies are genuinely captivating. I felt as though I were an active participant in analyzing the case, forming conclusions alongside the characters. Mark Shaiken's writing style is impeccable, characterized by its precision and descriptive richness, allowing readers to seamlessly immerse themselves in the narrative. Cram Down is an entertaining novel that offers an engaging and immersive reading experience that will leave you eager to explore more of Mark Shaiken's work.
A more-or-less straightforward legal issue of who controls a family owned, community bank takes an odd twist when one of the bank's owners, Amadi, mysteriously vanishes. 3J is the attorney trying to untangle the legal aspects of corporate control of the bank. She suddenly finds herself trying to solve the disappearance and possibly kidnapping of one of the plaintiffs. Her skills as a lawyer are put to the test. What could go wrong? Then, it does. The level of intimate knowledge of both the banking business and corporate/bankruptcy law at play in Cram Down is amazing. The author, Mar Shaiken, must have worked in both industries for years to know so much detail. The proof is in the details. The story and the characters are superbly developed in this slow burn legal thriller. I grew to really like 3J. Well done. Well done.
A solid drama/thriller about a family drama occurring at a bank. Starts a little slow, as bank tend to be, then it heats up and maintains a level of drama to the climax. A well developed collection of characters, a realistic plot, a couple of worthy villains and a believable conclusion. I recommend it.
Another rollicking unpredictable and eloquently written story about Shaiken’s great protagonist, Josephina Jones (3J to her friends, including us readers)Tho it is a bit bewildering how a bankruptcy lawyer ends up in middle of mobster contract killers story, it still does get explained, and is great fun (as the first three 3J books were)
In “Cram Down,” the fourth book in Mark Shaiken’s 3J Legal Thriller Series, Kansas City attorney Josephina Jillian Jones, or 3J, takes a case to help a couple whose inner-city housing business is in jeopardy after their bank suddenly cuts off funding. The situation quickly spirals when the bank president goes missing and his suspect brother enters the scene, while the involvement of the local mob intensifies the danger. With lives hanging by a thread and time ticking away, 3J must rely not only on her brilliant legal mind but also on a sprinkle of luck and the rock-solid support of her loyal team. Will 3J crack the case before the clock strikes zero? You’ll be on the edge of your seat until the last page, trust me.
I loved this story! There’s much to say, but let’s begin with what I always find to be the most captivating aspect of any book—the characters. Out of the fascinating ensemble of personalities in “Cram Down,” these three especially grabbed my attention.
Of course, Josephina Jillian Jones, 3J, tops my list. She’s not just another face in the courtroom; she’s a protagonist who captivated me from the start. Her skillful navigation through legal mazes showcases her as not only resourceful, but also incredibly intelligent and commanding. While she effortlessly handles complex legal challenges at the office, it’s her vulnerable side in her private life that truly won me over. This duality brings a level of authenticity to her character, making her not just a remarkable attorney, but also a genuinely relatable human being.
Robbie McFadden comes in as a strong second. Robbie is an outstanding antagonist. He’s not your average mob boss; this is a bruiser with a degree and a deep fascination with Kansas City history. While he rules with unyielding authority, his keen interest in the past adds an unexpected layer to his character. Whether recounting tales to his subordinates or “clients,” he is a spellbinding storyteller. My favorite McFadden moment was his animated conversation with Jordan Browne, where he told the tale of Mary McElroy:
Ever heard of Mary McElroy? … Two guys kidnapped her right from her bathtub in KC… Can you imagine? There are some additional lines and expletives to this story, but I’m keeping it clean for the purposes of this review. Great stuff.
I was also captivated by the contrasting personalities of banker twins, Amadi and Jordan Browne. Their complex, tension-filled relationship not only serves as a striking study of good versus evil but also significantly enriches the story’s thematic depth. Jordan’s greed and deceit set up powerful threats, while Amadi’s commitment to societal betterment offers a hopeful counterpoint, creating a dynamic that adds layers of complexity to the narrative.
The settings stand right up there with the characters in “Cram Down.” Richly drawn, with cinematic flair and vibrant details that make scenes and settings leap off the page, fully immersing you as if you were part of the unfolding plot. One particular scene at The Belfry restaurant is noteworthy, revealing an appreciation for refined palates. As you visualize the dishes being served, you can almost capture the alluring wafts of aromatic specialties being presented to 3J and Steele, prepared by Tio, a James Beard award-winning chef. No, that rumbling isn’t my stomach; it’s a testament to the writing’s captivating artistry.
In “Cram Down,” Mark Shaiken demonstrates a writing style that is both sophisticated and engaging, masterfully balancing narrative complexity with thematic depth. He enriches the storyline by incorporating elements of Kansas City’s history, adding layers of context that elevate the plot beyond a mere legal thriller. The ethical complexities surrounding housing for the underprivileged are not just side notes, but integral aspects of the central conflict. His characters, too, are multi-dimensional – even the mob boss with a unique ethical code and a fascination for history. This cultured approach shows a writer fully in command of his craft, capable of offering an enriching and captivating reading experience.
If you’re a fan of history, law, jazz, or food, then Mark Shaiken’s “Cram Down” deserves a spot on your reading list. If you happen to enjoy all of these elements, you’re in for a treat—his entire 3J Legal Thriller series will likely introduce you to your next favorite author. I highly recommend “Cram Down,” but not before indulging in the other books in the series first. You can thank me later.

The book is the fourth in the 3J Legal Thriller series and is recommended for fans of the genre. Overall, "Cram Down" is a well-crafted and engaging legal thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
Cram Down, follows the compelling narrative of the astute lawyer Josephina Jillian Jones - affectionately termed 3J by her friends - and the intricately woven lives of brothers Amadi and Jordan Browne.
Embarking on a journey from a shadowed past, 3J plunges herself into the legal maelstrom encompassing a non-profit organization, Abode. The atmosphere tenses as her involvement quickly spirals into a vortex of unpredictability and peril. The reader is left poised on a razor's edge, contemplating: will 3J’s legal prowess and emotional resilience be enough to navigate this treacherous case?
Contrastingly, Amadi Browne, rooted in his banking pedigree and a connoisseur of charitable endeavors, grapples with the bittersweet legacy of a bank inherited from his parents. His appreciation for the institution's history teeters on the brink of melancholy as he yearns for his brother to peer into the depth of its legacy with equivalent reverence. The complexities of family ties and inherited responsibility are palpable, keeping the reader bound to Amadi’s internal and external struggles.
Jordan Browne, embroiled in his ambitious visions, stealthily assumes control of the bank through the strategic acquisition of his brother's shares. His clandestine maneuvers and stark contrast in visions for the bank’s trajectory pose a poignant question: Will the brothers' divergent paths weave a future of success or sow seeds of familial discord?

“Cram Down” may be author Mark Shaiken’s most recent in the 3J Legal Thriller Series, but it reads easily as a standalone. Like his other reads, history plays a large role in the sequence of events that play out across the page. Both as readers discover more about 3J’s upbringing and family, as well as the history of the Browne brothers.
The Commonwealth Savings and Loan Bank has a commendable past. Focusing on black owned businesses and providing services to minority customers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. But Abode is one business relationship in particular that has made Commonwealth president Amadi Washington Browne proud. Abode, founded by Bella and James Franklin, is a non-profit aimed at building homes for lower middle-class families as they seek to provide homeownership to groups historically omitted from this piece of the American Dream. However, in his moment of despair, Amadi was forced to sell his controlling interest in the bank to his twin brother, Jordan Lincoln Browne.
Jordan and Amadi couldn’t be more different. Jordan is committed to putting money in his own pocket, and doing business with non-profits such as Abode are no way to line your pockets. As Jordan demands Abode find financing elsewhere, Josephine Jillian Jones, or 3J as everyone refers to her, is forced to step in. With a cram down bankruptcy plan 3J finds herself emotionally attached to Abode’s mission, but Jordan Browne has other plans.
As a banker, the emotional attachment, belief in company values, and relationship to those Amadi works with was an entirely representative portrayal. It is clear Shaiken’s past, working closely with bankers and their various clients, lends well to the accuracy of the story within. However, as the stakes grow and Jordan’s power ignites, characters begin to get in over their heads, creating a thrilling, emotional, and suspenseful ride.
“Cram Down” may be the legal term for 3J’s bankruptcy strategy within, but the action-packed gamble that Jordan makes comes back to face him. As 3J, Abode, and Commonwealth square off, larger players begin to emerge as the plot thickens. Immediately falling for Amadi’s character, Abode’s beliefs, and Commonwealth’s history, Shaiken plays to the readers emotional side as “Cram Down” takes shape.

Shaiken's meticulous research and expertise in bankruptcy law are evident throughout the story, infusing the courtroom scenes with a level of authenticity and intricacy that is often lacking in the genre. Cram Down (3J Legal Thriller) by Mark Shaiken is a compelling legal thriller that dives deep into the banking industry. While the subject matter might initially seem a bit dry, this book proves to be an engaging and fast-paced read. If you’re fascinated by financial crime, this novel will hook you from the start.
Though the frequent banking references might feel a bit dense at times, the gripping crime storyline more than compensates for it. Shaiken’s writing is top-notch, with detailed and nuanced character development and a meticulously crafted plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Cram Down is a substantive and thoroughly enjoyable read. The storyline, character arcs, surprising twists, and seamless blend of facts and fiction make it well worth your time. Plus, the callbacks to previous books and hints for future novels are a treat for series fans. Highly recommended!
“Their only commonality was the womb they had shared …” In Mark Shaiken’s fourth installment of his 3J legal adventure series, Pascale and 3J take a backseat to the Browne brothers and their irreconcilable differences regarding their family bank’s mission. The dispute elevates to the point where one brother calls upon the services of Kansas City’s most famous mob boss. In Cram Down, Shaiken demonstrates growth as a writer by stepping beyond his comfort zone as a bankruptcy attorney and delving into the nuances of a crime story where allegiances and priorities change from chapter to chapter. My favorite book in the series.
I am the first to say Legal Thrillers are always amazing and Cram Down didn’t disappoint. With a good dose of social justice and a solid murder plot this book is a great read if you are looking to stay on a hairs breath and still understand a plight.
Plus you get a good dose of African American History that makes the book a good equilibrium for all the things that make for a great fictional story with a bleed into history.
The first half of the book had a little too much economics/banking for my taste, but the action picked up in the 2nd half. Some of the choices made by some of the characters did not seem logical or realistic to me. Other than that, it was a pretty good story.
It is a page turner. Set aside enough time to be immersed in the lives of two brothers who could not be mire different. It is not a book you will want to read a chapter or two at a time. Look forward to seeing what comes next.
I think for the right person this book would be great. It wasn’t my style of a book and almost felt like it was written for a man. There was a lot of interesting facts in the book. Maybe too many facts throughout the book that took away from the story line.
Great plot. Inner monologues that drone on, in extreme detail stating either the obvious or or what's already been stated before. Not my kind if writing.
