Smilin' Sam's Corn Maze

Rate this book
When her seven-year-old daughter Lizzy disappeared into a corn maze on Halloween night in 1984, Catherine Bryant didn’t think she’d survive the loss.

For nearly forty years, Catherine has struggled with her grief and guilt, so when her doctor delivers a fatal diagnosis, it’s almost a relief.

But something is happening to Catherine. Whether a result of her medications or from the disease that’s destroying her brain, Catherine is experiencing vivid nightmares that spill over to waking hallucinations of a malicious cartoon scarecrow. Smilin' Sam has ripped himself free from the billboard above the maze claiming he wants to help her.

As her dreams reveal new clues, Catherine becomes obsessed with finding Lizzy’s remains so they can be laid to rest together.

The lines between fantasy and reality blur as Sam becomes increasingly real and violent. Will his cruelty and power over Catherine lead her to do the unthinkable as her mental state deteriorates?

Curve Ball Out of Left Field...

SMILIN' SAM'S CORN MAZE
by Stephanie Perry Scissom

No spoilers. 3 1/2 stars. It had been 40 years since 7 year old Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bryant was last seen in Grundy County...

Lizzy's disappearance is a cold case...

And getting colder every year, but no one really cares anymore...

Except her family...

Mother Cath won't live to see another anniversary of her daughter's disappearance roll around due to a terminal illness she is battling...

But recently...

Something new has made mom want to live just a little longer. She's gotten new information about Lizzy...

Mom knows that Lizzy is dead...

She saw the bloody trench coat with her daughter's panties stuffed in its pocket. Mom just wants her back...

She wants Lizzy to be buried and lie next to the family in Wayne's Cove Cemetery...

It all started on Halloween night, 1984, at Smilin' Sam's corn maze. 5 acres of family fun...

Until Lizzy went missing...

Will Harton, 18, was arrested for her disappearance, but he denied taking Lizzy...

Now, 40 years later, Will Harton is long dead, killed in prison while awaiting trial...

But did he do the crime?...

This was more of a whodunit crime mystery than horror story. I was a little disappointed that more of the action early on in the story didn't take place in the corn maze.

The writing was a bit uneven and clunky, but it did hold my attention. I felt the conclusion came out of left field. Perhaps if the story was a little longer and had more clues, it wouldn't have felt like a let down when the reveal arrived.

Warning to some readers child kidnapping and abuse are part of the story.

What a hauntingly captivating novella. A Hallows Eve MUST read.

This was an effortless read that ensnared me within the first couple pages. The writing so enveloping that I was able to clearly envision the scenes and began to feel the MC’s desperation.

This short is about a mother who has long searched for the truth about her missing daughter. Battling a debilitating mental disease, the mother starts having recurring dreams of the night her daughter disappeared right in front of her. Hyper focused on the night in question, she desperately tries to pry details out of her failing memory. What she experiences as she does, is absolutely frightening.

This was such an excellent story. I only was able to determine what happened to the little girl just prior to reading the words of omission.

Be wary if you are sensitive to missing children and anything that may come along with it (nothing descriptive on that front).

This was absolutely more of a murder mystery, as opposed to a horror. I liked the premise and even the way everything played out, however the pacing and general flow were all over the place. Having a lead with increasingly severe neurodegenerative disease is plenty to disorient the reader. But then adding the additional layers of a decades old murder that has a lot of questionable circumstances just became a bit too much. Either one on their own would have been fine, but combined, I couldn't keep track of everything after a while and it felt like the only one who could follow the plot was the author. Lots of characters thrown in, pivots and twists, unsure of what was reality vs the lead character's health issue, all mashed into an 88-page runtime was just too much. Again, none of it was badly done, but this either needed to reduce some of the plot points or make the story longer. It all moved too quickly and tried to cover too much, too fast. Good effort by Scissom, especially as her debut book, and I'm left curious about how she will progress as a writer.

This one completely blew me away. Seriously, at only 88 pages, I was expecting a quick read with some spooky scarecrow stuff because really, how much depth can you get in under a hundred pages? Turns out, a lot. This book is an incredibly powerful, emotional punch that left me in tears by the end.

The story centers on Catherine, who's been haunted for nearly forty years by the disappearance of her daughter, Lizzy. Now, facing a terminal illness, Catherine's mind starts to unravel. Because of her degenerative disease, you're constantly questioning what's real and what's not, yet you can't help but root for her as she desperately tries to find closure. Good luck, Catherine.

And Smilin' Sam? Oh, he's terrifying. This malicious cartoon scarecrow just crawls out of the billboard and into Catherine's deteriorating reality, and the imagery around him is fantastic. Totally gave me the creeps! He's not messing around.

What makes this book truly special, though, isn't just the horror; it's the raw emotion. While there are definitely some chilling moments, it's more about the deep, long-term impact of grief than jump scares. So, if you're looking for something purely horror-focused, you might be a tad disappointed; your loss, really. But if you're open to a deeply moving and unsettling psychological journey, you're in for a treat.

Man… this book was so good!!! I was crying at the end, it was so emotional!!!

You’ll get a mix of psychological horror, and mystery thriller amongst these pages. A cold case goes almost 40 years without resolution and the mother of the abducted child makes it her palliative mission to get answers at last. As her mind fails her, does the scarecrow that keeps appearing want to help or hinder her? Is it more than just a delusion or memory?

“My thoughts are scattered now, chaotic. Violent, intense, and dark, then dispersing into nothing, like a murmuration of starlings in a clear, blue sky.”

There were so many crazy twists and reveals! Despite it being a shorter story, I was totally invested in the characters and what happens to them. It was a great ending, and a reader couldn’t ask for more, but I was still sad to and say goodbye to Cath.

This little novella packs a gut wrenching punch on a small amount of text. It isn’t scary, but is based on the moms crippling and short term disease of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a quick degenerative dementia.
A loving family of six go to Smilin Sam’s corn maze. During their visit the youngest, a beautiful little girl, is taken. As the years progress, 40 years later, the case has gone cold and the girl has yet to be found. Mom has just been diagnosed with the devastating disease and begins having vivid dreams featuring Smilin Sam. The dreams are the same every night and she begins to realize that Smilin Sam is giving her clues to her daughters final resting place. The man accused of killing her had died even before a trial and Catherine begins her search with surprising introductions to new and unexpected friends.
Believe me that this story is gut wrenching and had me shedding some tears at the end. I would totally recommend this book by Stephanie Scissom and will be searching for more great reads by her

Lizzy bounces in her seat. "I wanna do the corn maze!"
"It's not for babies," Caleb says. "It's not like Papa Tom's field. There are monsters in there."

This little novella by Stephanie Scissom packs one hell of a punch that had me telling the wife my allergies must be flaring up by the end. 🥺🤧

This story follows a 71 year old mother recently diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jokob disease trying to find some measure of closure in her final days regarding the disappearance of her 7 year old daughter Lizzy.

If the idea of having someone so precious to you ripped away isn't terrifying enough, look up the nightmare fuel that is that disease. Fear is certainly a personal experience but losing my mind and self is a big one for me. Stephanie Scissom uses both of these ideas expertly alongside a wonderfully well written narrative and excellent pacing to take a baseball bat to your insides.

I can't recommend this one enough! If you like horror-thrillers with a healthy dose of real world nightmares read this one immediately. 5 ⭐

CHILLING.

Talk about a real life nightmare. I could vividly picture everything that was going on. I was hooked from the first few pages; excellent writing. Tough read if you’re sensitive to missing children - it focuses more on the mystery behind the disappearance. As a mother, my heart raced the entire time with tears coming and going. I can’t imagine what this mother/family went through. A true page turner.

This was more murder mystery than horror in my eyes but I really enjoyed this novella!!

It follows our main character Catherine 39years after her daughter was taken in Smilin Sam’s corn maze when she starts a new medication for her illness and begins having these vivid dreams and remembering more details from the day, she is determined to find out what happened to her daughter so she can have closure and have their remains laid to rest together…

I thought this was really well written and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a gripping short story.

This was actually pretty cool. I always keep my expectations low for my “freebie” books—you never know what you’re in for!—but every once in a while, one of them really shines. Smilin’ Sam’s Corn Maze is one of those winners.

Kind of unpolished in parts, but overall extremely solid and, unlike other novellas, truly gripping in story setup and sense of intrigue. I wanted to know the answers, and I didn’t want to stop reading until I found them out.

This kind of reminded me of an episode of criminal minds. A daughter who was kidnapped and killed but never found A mother 40 years later trying to find and lay her daughter to rest. A quick little who done it. Once you get to a certain point you know who did it but the lead I up really captures you so you’re not mad that you know who did it. Especially because it’s like 95% in when you find out.

Quick and easy murder mystery w slight paranormal elements. Wouldn't call it a horror by any means.

Weirdly enough my fav scene was Catherine and Bobby in the hospital bed.

The last page really felt out of place, and I think that the paranormal elements could have been left out and I would have liked it better

So I definitely judged this book solely by the cover. This book was nothing of what I was expecting it to be but at the same time it was EVERYTHING I expected.

I couldn't put this one down.

Please be mindful of the fact that there is a missing/dead child, as well as some mental health issues. Again, your mental health matters more than a book.

Lizzy disappeared during a family trip at a corn field maze. the police believe they'd found the person responsible and he was arrested and well...handed some prison justice of his own. Years later as Cathi's health begins to deteriorate rapidly she begins to start having some vivid dreams. But not just dreams, nightmares, replays of the day her and her families lives had changed forever.

It isn't until her dreams begin to cross into the real world when she can no longer keep it together. Smilin' Sams a figment of her imagination...or perhaps he's there to help truly sold her daughter's case.

Cathi teams up with a partner of unlikely circumstances to track down some inconsistencies from that tragic day.

Terrific and absolutely chilling, Smilin' Sam's Corn Maze is the kind of story you can read in one go and still doesn't feel short. It's like there's not a wasted word here. So much detail goes into what Catherine is experiencing. Her disease, her nightmares, and all the pain and rekindled hope in regards to her daughter's disappearance.
I loved seeing a protagonist so different from the young action figures I usually find in mystery novels. Her relentless quest and the relationship with her family and allies made this, quite horrifying story, a real pleasure to read. What a fantastic book!

Forty years ago on Halloween, Catherine's seven-year old daughter Lizzy vanished when the family visited Smilin' Sam's Corn Maze. Today, Catherine has been diagnosed with a degenerative disease. Though a man was arrested who eventually died in jail and the police were sure they caught the culprit, Lizzy's remains were never found. Now that she's been given a prognosis of death, Catherine wants desperately to find out what really happened to Lizzy. And she keeps seeing visions of a scarecrow, Smilin' Sam himself, who torments her, but may ultimately show her the way.
Scarecrow visions and a corn maze on Halloween aside, I can't really call this a horror story, as it's really just a mystery/thriller that contains those elements. Though a full story is told in a brief novella, one of the hardest things to swallow is how quickly and conveniently a lot happens involving a 40-year old case in a matter of less than two days. Would it all have seemed as convenient had it been a full-length novel and taken place over, say, a week? Maybe, maybe not. It's by no means a bad tale, just a bit of a contrived one.

This was a chilling short story!

The books takes places years after the disappearance of a young girl named Lizzy who was with her family when she vanished. Leads we’re followed and people were interviewed. The killer was put behind bars and died imprisoned. Now, fourty years later, Lizzy’s aging mother is being haunted by dreams from that night. Each dream pulls her closer and closer to the truth about her daughter and makes her question if the man who went down for the crime was actually the real perpetrator.

This was a fun read with good writing. Great for Halloween time. It’s easy to digest while being gripping and fast paced. I enjoyed following the main character in her quest to uncover the real truth even when most everyone else is convinced the case has been solved. This story was creepy, intriguing and sweet. Unusual connections are made and old relationships rekindled. Fun and fast. Not really horror but definitely a creepy thrilling read.

Smilin’ Sam’s Corn Maze is an absolute masterpiece and I listened to the entire novella in one sitting because it captivated me from the very beginning. I thought it was truly incredible how seamlessly both Catherine Bryant’s medical journey with being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and her getting justice for what happened to her daughter Lizzy 40 years ago when she disappeared from a corn maze were combined together. Additionally, the narrator did such an amazing job with bringing the scarecrow to life. Overall, the story was spooky, full of twists and turns, and I loved it. I definitely will be recommending it to friends and family for sure. Thank you so much Stephanie Scissom for sending me a free audiobook of the story in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fantastic horror-thriller book! It’s so interesting and original. There’s creep, suspense and horror for what the family has gone through.
What the mom goes through with her dreams and determination to find out the truth about her daughter is heartbreaking and terrifying.
This is a really great short story with a deep meaning and impact that I wasn’t expecting. This book was so intense; it was a one sitting read. I wasn’t going to put it down until I had all the answers!

I listened to the audio version and the narrator was excellent! I highly recommend this great book!

Thank you to Stephanie Perry Scissom for an audio copy!

I got this on a load your kindle book event back in October and boy am I so glad I downloaded this. I’d forgotten about it for a while but went looking for some short stories in my library and let me tell you I wish I could make everyone read this. This was so good. Its not the genre I usually read but it’s 84 pages and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The ending made me sob. I felt so attached to Catherine and her life and her deterioration makes my heart hurt. This is the story of an old, dying woman who finally gets answers about her daughter’s disappearance (spoiler, murder). It’s got a warm family feelings, losing and then finding hope, forgiveness and loss… it’s just such a good short story. If I taught a college class I would make them read this.

In 1984, seven-year-old Lizzie went missing in the Halloween corn maze — never to be seen again. The man arrested for her disappearance was later killed in prison. But now, forty years on, her mother is dying and wants to be buried with her child. Determined to find her daughter’s body, she reopens the investigation.

A fairly short read, but man, did it hit me in the feels. I was blubbering like a baby by the end of it! The plot was unique and kept me guessing until the very end. I just wish it had been a little longer.

This was a super quick and easy read! Written by a local Author! There was just enough detail to know exactly what was going on and none of the usual page filler I feel like I get with longer books. Very suspenseful; each page was some sort of new detail leading you closer to the end. And the end itself was so good. I may have shed a tear or two!
