Initial reaction: 5 stars. Yeah, I think this one hit me at the right place and right time. Two musicians striking the right vibe together, building a connection and hitting it off? *chef's kiss* It was short and sweet and I enjoyed Audra and Noble as I watched them connect, make music, and engage in steamy times. This one had funny banter that had me laughing, so that won me over as well.
Full review:
I sat on my reflections with "Call and Response", the third installation into Christina C. Jones's "New Heights" series. Can definitively say that I'm all the way back into this series after really struggling with the last novella "Split Decision" (and I really wanted to like that one - it had all the elements I should've loved but...*sighs* Winnie. Check that review if you want more details. It was a lot.). "Call and Response" is definitely my favorite of the three novellas thus far. I was rooting for both Audra and Noble getting together because their chemistry pops on the page - it was funny and sweet. Audra is Winnie's cousin, known more for her songwriting than her singing. But as she's tasked with organizing a concert - and performing at it - she feels a heavy anxiety for the whole thing. Crowds are tough, she knows it, and the anxiety she feels at screwing it up is palpable. At a coffee shop, she meets - and falls for - Noble. Noble's a musician in his own right, but of a former singing duo. Audra realizes he's "quit music" because of a lack of confidence doing his own solo stuff versus getting wide success in his collabs, so she decides to take him on to be able to perform together with her.
The result? Smoldering chemistry in the studio and other places, lol. I really liked reading their respective banter between each other and their dialogue felt realistic. The lyric snippets were a nice touch too. The characters from the previous novellas make appearances too. I thought the ending was a nice arc to conclude it on, considering where it starts on the performances and having both Audra and Noble in a better space, with said chemistry in tow.
Overall, definitely appreciated this story and would re-read. I'm not sure if there'll be another novella, but I'll pick it up to keep following the series, if so.
Overall score: 5/5 stars.
