Working side-by-side on a charity project might just prove to be the foundation of a new romance.

Deandre Jones is enjoying his single life quite nicely, thank you. He’s a defenseman on the Watkins Glen Gladiators, gets to travel, dates frequently, and isn’t tied down to anything other than his mom and brother back in the windy city. He has time to do the whole family and kids thing. Right now he’s happy to be footloose, even if his mother has different ideas. As the playoffs near his focus should be on hockey, but for some reason, he can’t seem to give the sport its due. Ever since he volunteered to help the incredibly handsome assistant pastor of a local church work on an addition to the parish, his attention seems to be locked on curly hair and bright blue eyes instead of breakaways and body checks.

Gabriel Hansley has quite the full plate. Not only is he the first openly out bisexual assistant pastor for a small but highly active parish, but he’s also got his son to tend to as well as his work at the church, which keeps him hopping all day long. And that’s a good thing as the nights alone are hard for the young widower. Just when he’s about to give up on finding a person to share his life with—chaotic as it can be—he finds himself hammering nails beside Deandre Jones. As they work side-by-side under the bright spring sun, he’s getting warmer under the collar with each shared smile and terrible carpentry pun.

Dump and Chase is a low-angst, slow burn, age gap queer hockey romance with a not-quite-as-confirmed-as-he-thought bachelor, a harried single father, plenty of nosy but well-meaning parishioners and teammates, tons of joyous song, and a harmonious happily ending.

I'm not sure what I want to say about this book because, while I enjoyed the ease of it having a lack of drama and there being a kind of gentle feel to the narrative, I'm not someone who believes in a scriptural God so I found myself disinterested in a lot of the subject.

Gabe was lovely, the book isn't at all preachy, but I wasn't overly bothered about hearing the day to day trivia of being a pastor, or the conversations with his Lord. But, they also didn't annoy me either, so I can't say I disliked that element.

The romance itself is very, very slow burn, part of that is the practicalities of them finding time to spend together, part of it is Deandre's concerns about whether he could be involved with a minister and a single dad.

There's no overly angsty bits though and Deandre's not internally monologing repeatedly about his feelings, he has a conversation with his best friend who points out something he's overlooked about why he's afraid of falling in love, and he then has a serious think about it.

There's a reasonable age gap between them, but it doesn't feel like a giant one because Deandre's pretty mature for his age and Gabe is a minister, so he's open, welcoming and patient.

Gabe's son Clifford is an absolute gem, he's written age appropriate, he's got an easy attitude and he and Deandre establish a really sweet friendship too.

Overall there were definitely more things I liked with this narrative than those I didn't, there's a lovely sense of family around the church environs, and there's all the usual appearances from the other Watkins Glen Gladiators queer fraternity.

There's also a guest appearance from everyone's favourite Pole Victor Kalinski and his hubbie Dan when they come for the annual alumni charity game.

I am, however, very much looking forward to book four, which sees sophisticated Frenchman Henri and rough and tumble Phil Grecco getting it on.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review

This has been the fluffiest series VL has done so far, and I'm liking it. A minister is an interesting love interest for a gay romance, but somehow it fits? Not sure how. But it does.
Sometimes you need everything to be fine and everyone to be happy. And this is a good book for those moments.

Riletti i precedenti volumi!! 🤩😍

Molto bello e romantico.

We’re back with the Gladiators. This time we find Deandre volunteering at the Open Arms Tabernacle. He’s put in search of the associate pastor Gabe. From the very first Deandre is gobsmacked. The attraction is absolutely there. What holds him back is the pastor thing and the kid thing. Gave us a widower who’s raising his son alone. Clifford is an adorable young boy. He almost steals the show in this book. He’s utterly delightful.

If your looking for a steamy sexy book this isn’t it. This is a beautiful slow burn love story. We watch Deandre wrestle with his feelings. We see his desire and his reticence about dating a pastor and what it means to date a man with a son. We see him building a relationship with bot Gabe and Clifford.
At times this book was rolling on the floor funny due to the antics of the Gladiators. They are a hoot but they are there for Deandre. Their support helps ground Deandre. They enable him to envision the future he wants.

Since Gabe is a widower he doesn’t struggle as much as Deandre. Gabe is thrust into the role as senior pastor. He finds that he is almost overburdened by trying to fulfill both the senior and associate pastor responsibilities. He does struggle with the burdens.
So it was so very sweet to watch them acquiesce to their future.

So for me, this book had all the elements I look for in a romance. Just know it’s a slow burn love story. I absolutely look forward to the next book. It brings two unlikely characters together. It will be epic.

There's lots of inclusivity here, which I loved. The story itself was a little different to what I expected - in a good way though. As usual Vicki's writing is very good, and so so quirky, which made it an easy book to read. It's a sweet story, which has an element of low grade humour all the way through, which made me smile. It was a curious idea to write about a young, randy, hockey player and a bi-sexual priest with a son. I'm pleased that Vicki took the idea and ran with it, as I did enjoy Deandre and Gabe's romance. Gabe's piety often comes through, but it wasn't preachy, and l didn't really mind cos it was a big part of his character, and seemed fitting. It's a very slow burn romance, and apart from both guys having concerns about whether or not they would work out, there is some introspection, there's no real angst. It's very light hearted, the kind of story to make you smile and give you a happy glow. I loved Cliff, Gabe's son, and how he accepted certain aspects of the story without any fuss, he just took it all in his stride. It was a joy to read when he and Deandre were together on page, they were so much fun.

The story line was an interesting choice of trope, the main and secondary characters were delightful, and I would certainly recommend it for light reading.

Dump and Chase is such a sweet, low angst romance, that it’s easy to overlook its beautiful moments and great qualities because it’s so smoothly written.

This is a wonderful story of a young d-man from the Watkins Glen Gladiators and the widowed assistant pastor and single father of a small congregation who find themselves in a relationship that’s leads towards a HEA. To be honest, I avoid any novels that have religious content . Not my thing. But here it comes as a profession as well as the man’s desire to serve his community. Locey’s portrait is that of a multidimensional person.

Gabriel Hansley is a single dad with a rambunctious young son, a widower who loved his wife, a overwhelmed assistant pastor trying to move his church forward and a lonely man who’s becomes attracted to a younger hockey player. Everything about Gabe makes him someone we’d like to meet and connect with.

Deandre Jones, defensive man for the Watkins Glen Gladiators, is another of Locey’s gems when it comes to her hockey players. Young, talented, smart, trying to make a name for himself yet stay true to the upright, mannered person he was raised to be by his mother and close knit family. By dialogue and background, Deandre comes together with crystal clarity. That includes the issues he has of commitment that stem from a father’s abandonment.

Dump and Chase layers in a series of serious issues and elements, gently taking an opportunity to inspect, address and then, if possible, resolve them with communication and kindness. It’s not just obstacles that arise between the main characters, although that’s often the case, but other things as well. Things get wider audience as all sorts of allies and friends are drawn together for dialogue and discussions about things that need a closer look.

Super angsty? Perhaps not. Grownup with a lovely optimistic voice of adult reason with its underlying sense of humor and self worth.

And while the adults are finding their way into a relationship, it’s framed around Gabe’s changing life at his small congregation and Deandre’s role at the Gladiators. Change is happening, it’s how each of them will be able to deal with it and decide what to do with the new paths that open up.

The supporting cast of characters is a joy. Whether it’s Gabe’s son or Deandre’s teammates, Deandre’s mother or the wealthy winemaker who’s been Gabe’s biggest supporter at the church for changes, they are engaging and people I’m sure we will be seeing more of in future stories.

Dump and Chase (Watkins Glen Gladiators #3) by V. L. Locey is an engaging sweet romance and one of my favorites to date. I highly recommend it.

This is a charming love story... Watkins Glen Gladiators. New York. We have a slow burn romance, low angst, and a fun time.
Deandre/DJ Jones, 23, AHL hockey

defenseman, is black, 6'5", 210, super short dark hair and brown eyes. He attracted to a man and for the first time, where he doesn't want just a hook-up.
Gabriel/Gabe Hansley, 30, is a single Dad,

for six years, whose son is Clifford, 8. He' has blonde/brown, curly hair and blue eyes. He's bisexual, a minister at the non-denominational church.

A spring charity work party brought our men together, working side-by-side. DJ is struggling with the fact that he wants more from Gabe, and wonders if he's good enough for the pastor, and if he's ready to be "Dad" material.

The characters are lively and fun. The hockey training and games are tough, and the church needs much help. Gabe loves his job and knows he wants to see how the relationship goes.

There are more church events, and Gabe and Clifford meet DJ's loving, welcoming family, especially his Mom who raised them all without a Dad in their life. The men share pasts, and try to spend more time together, which includes Clifford.

DJ fits in so well with Gabe and Gabe and Clifford seamlessly fit with DJ's family and friends.
We like the match, and later their sexy time is super hot.

A heartwarming and caring tale of true love, a family formed, and growth along the way.

ENJOY !

If you’re looking for low angst, sweet, mm hockey romance, I definitely recommend checking out the Watkins Glen Gladiators series. With each release, V.L. Locey delivers great characters and genuine connections with a lot of heart. They’re emotional and heartfelt without being too intense or overwrought, and being on the shorter side for sports romances novels, they make for lighthearted, easy reads.

I found Dump and Chase to be an enjoyable story, if a bit different from the earlier books in the series. Deandre’s a defenseman for the Gladiators who seems to be enjoying the life of a semi-pro hockey player — travel, hooking up, and playing the sport he loves — but that all changes when he meets Gabe.

Gabe’s the assistant pastor at the local church, and when Deandre’s team pitches in to volunteer on a project, their mutual, instant attraction flares. Deandre can’t stop thinking about the handsome single dad for many reasons both clean and dirty.

This story splits time between hockey and Gabe’s church community as they get to know one another. It pretty heavily explores Gabe’s life and vocation as a man of the cloth, and while I wouldn’t consider it to be overly preachy, there’re frequent mentions of theology, scripture, Church dynamics, and other religious elements. I did grow a little weary of people apologizing for swearing in front of Gabe, but I guess it’s all part of the job.

This is a very slow burn, age gap romance with a lot of sweet moments and introspection. There are many things about each of these guys that cause the other to really think about what he wants from life and from a relationship, and the end result is one sweet, happily ever after.

I’m loving this series, and Deandre and Gabe’s book left me with a wonderful warm feeling when I’d finished. I have a weakness for single dad stories, and this author is one responsible for hooking me on hockey romance.

Deandre’s hesitation and second guessing himself before figuring out why he’s feeling like when he’s obviously fallen for Gabe, rang very true, considering his background. I loved his relationship with his mother and brother, and how he’s able to talk things through with his teammate, Liam. His friendship with Cliff is sweet, and I love how Cliff accepts his dad and Deandre’s relationship without hesitation.

Wow, I wish there were more preachers like Gabe. His faith shines through, and it’s obvious his vocation is more than just a job, and that he cares for everyone and wants to make a difference. He’s a great dad too. I loved his and Deandre’s connection and slow burn relationship as they try to make time to get to know each other around their busy schedule.

Family and found family play a huge part in this story, which is one of the things I love about the genre and this author’s books. Deandre’s mother is wonderful. I loved how supportive and encouraging she is, and very keen to welcome Gabe and Cliff into the family although they haven’t got that far yet. I enjoyed the banter and teasing with Deandre’s team. I loved Faith and Henri, and am very pleased that Henri is getting his own book. He needs a HEA.

I’ve never watched hockey yet I got drawn into that part of the story, and was cheering on the Gladiators, and enjoyed the descriptions of their games.

Dump and Chase is the third book in the Watkins Glen Gladiators series, the latest series from this dynamic duo of hockey based romances that stem from their original Harrisburg Railers series, and this series also has links to Locey's According to Liam series. Needless to say, fans of this author duo will be more than pleased to sit back, relax and get sucked into the world of the men from the NHL feeder team, the Watkins Glen Gladiators.

While this is a standalone book, both the main characters have been introduced in previous books. So some readers might appreciate a bit of background, particularly on the players on the Gladiators team.

Deandre is one of the Gladiators defenders, and after seeing two of his teammates find love, it's now his turn. He met Pastor Gabe through a fundraiser which was shown on page back in book two. Being a pastor of a progressive church, Gabe is a widow with a seven year old son and is openly bisexual.

This is a slow burn romance. While there is an age gap, no drama is made out of it (which I appreciate). Gabe and Deandre get to know each other and build something together between the ups and downs of the hockey season, as well as a time of chance in Gabe's church, where the head pastor seems to be looking towards retirement. This was a relaxing read because I felt that both characters were relatable, and they were just living life and somehow finding a way to let love into their lives.

This is book 3 in the Watkins Glen Gladiators series but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Deandre Jones and Gabriel Hansley. Deandre is a young defensemen playing for the Gladiators. When the team volunteers to help out the Open Arms Tabernacle build an extension he meets the impressive Gabriel. Gabe is a pastor and widowed father to 8 year old Clifford. This is their story. I loved the interest the two felt for each other right off the start. I can also appreciate the trepidation Deandre had with the idea of entering into a relationship with a pastor and a father. I liked how they became friends first and then the relationship slowly due. That slowness is due to their crazy work schedules and not a deliberate decision to slow things down. While the focus is on the two of them; you still get all the fun and interaction from Deandre's teammates. I enjoyed the peak into how busy a pastors life can be. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. My only pause was Deandre's mother. Her character was just too over the top for me. It took me out of the story for a bit. This book is very well written and easy to read. Looking forward to the next book by this author.

This book is a delightful surprise, showcasing the author's excellent and quirky writing style. It's a heartwarming tale with a touch of humor that is sure to bring a smile to your face. The plot centers on an unconventional pairing between a young and passionate hockey player and a bisexual priest with a son. Despite the unusual premise, the author masterfully crafts an engaging romance between Deandre and Gabe. Gabe's devout nature is portrayed without being overly preachy, which fits well with his character. The romance develops slowly, with both characters grappling with doubts but devoid of heavy drama. The overall tone is lighthearted and joyous, leaving readers with an uplifting feeling. Cliff, Gabe's son, adds to the story's charm with his effortless acceptance of the situation. This book offers a unique trope, and endearing characters, and is highly recommended for those seeking a light, enjoyable read.

I have to say that it was somewhat refreshing to read a book with a church that truly embraces everyone, but for me the focus on the church and other aspects of Deandre and Gabe's lives left little room to develop a relationship and I struggled with their connection and some of the language of the book. This is a very slow burn and a very slow build from strangers to friends to eventual lovers with so much going on in between.

I do like both characters and when they eventually had time to focus on their relationship, I truly enjoyed that part, but even at the end there was a lot more than romance going on and I felt that somewhat eclipsed their relationship. It was interesting seeing these two busy people try to work themselves as a couple into their separate lives.

While this wasn't my favourite book of the series, it was well written and sweet and definitely worth reading as part of the series! I did love the HEA!

Gosh, I enjoyed Deandre and Gabe’s lovely story! These two characters are so charming and lovable. I read lots of hockey romances but I’ve not come across any quite like this one. I absolutely loved the idea of putting the hockey player and the pastor together. I appreciated how the the author works religion into the story in an organic, nothing feels heavy handed. This couple really feels like a bit of a gift, as they avoid a lot the common romance book drama. Gabe and DJ are open about their attraction to each other, they communicate pretty honestly, and I absolutely loved that they do not hide. It all makes for a pretty special read. Plus, hockey side of the story is so expertly done. The team dynamic is excellent and I especially loved the game descriptions. They were so real and vivid which made it very easy to feel part of the action. Loved this couple, loved this book!

Oh my! This age-gap, single-father, hockey player + pastor book gave me the warm fuzzies. The third book in the Watkins Glen Gladiators series is delightful.

Deandre (“DJ”), a young player on the Gladiators, is enjoying single life, despite his mama’s wish that he settle down. But something about Pastor Gabe has him questioning his reluctance to embark on a monogamous relationship. When these two get together, it is so sweet.

Locey handles Gabriel’s profession/calling with sensitivity and addresses his bisexuality and views about sex outside of marriage frankly.

Gabe’s son Cliff brings in the requisite cuteness along with almost-caught moments. Teammates (especially the queer contingent) bring the hockey part to life. And supporting characters such as Henri and Faith help further story development neatly.

If I could find a pastor like Gabe I might go to church

An enjoyable read and a religious cleric MC is a new one for me. I’m fairly anti organized religion, especially in the last few years as the hypocrisy is astounding. But Locey has given us a pastor, referenced as a liberal theologian, who is someone I might actually respect in the pulpit.

I feel like we get to know Gabe a bit better than DJ. Or I guess it’s maybe that there is more complexity to Gabe than there is to DJ as presented here. This is a very low angst read and it certainly presents Watkins Glen, not far from my hometown, in a good light. Likewise it does a nice job presenting AHL hockey in a welcoming and accepting light which given the NHL’s actions this year is a ray of sunshine. If only it weren’t fiction.

Looking forward to Henri’s story in the next book.

I adored this story.
Gabe and Deandre's attraction to each other was instant and handle beautifully by the author.
I adored how they took things slowly yet there was plenty of heat.
Cliff is an amazing kid who sees nothing wrong, as he shouldn't, with his dad being Bi and dating Deandre. He handles things easily and with the magic that is a kid with no prejudices.
Beautifully written with just enough spice to keep anyone happy.
The community that these characters are a part of, will hopefully one day be the norm.

I don't want to give anything away, so I am ending this review. To all those who are reading this, do yourself a huge favor and get this book!

I am looking forward to the next in this series.

This book would be good for readers looking for a very slow-burn romance between an unlikely couple of a minister and an AHL player trying to win the cup. There is also an age difference along with a single dad trope.

I particularly enjoyed the on-the-page hockey action along with the locker room and on-ice banter, which Locey knows how to write well. I’ve been reading too many “hockey” books lately that only have one MC that used to be an NHL player. I much prefer hockey stories that revolve around an active player/coach that is central to the story. (4.5 stars)

The hot hockey player and the preacher!

This book was a super slow burn one and I loved it. DJ and Gabe seemed like an odd match but it worked. Both men are bi and the attraction is there nearly from the beginning. The fact that Gabe has a son nearly has DJ backing away but end the end he makes a connection with Cliff and his fears go away. I loved that the church Gabe works for is inclusive of all people and sexual orientations. I'm really looking forward to reading the next story about aloof Frenchman Henri and Phil.

This was a sweet, low-angst story. I definitely loved that challenges Deandre had in figuring out how to date a pastor especially given his upbringing. Gabe was the perfect pastor- and I loved how he showed his faith. They had a beautiful connection and I loved how Gabe really took his family etc. into the equation. Side characters were hilarious- especially Deandre's mom. Definitely recommend!

This series is amazing. I have absolutely enjoyed all three books. I just knew I would love Deandre and Gabriel’s story. And I was so right.

It was so cute that Deandre was a bit hung up on the fact that Gabriel was a pastor. The book was fairly slow burn, but it felt so authentic and just what I would expect. I enjoyed it immensely. And the supporting characters were fabulous.

I am looking forward for more books in this series. I cannot wait.

Absolutely wonderful to find a m/m romance between a loving pastor and a hockey player with positive depictions of religion, the day to day life of a pastor, religious folks and charity work. Deandre and Gabe made such a wonderful couple and the family they build together left me smiling from ear to ear.

A Good Book

I found Dump and Chase be a well written and interesting book. MM Hockey Romance are my absolute favourite books and this one was no exception. It was different with the overlay of religion which I found rather oppressive. However, I love this author and have all her books.

Deandre(DJ) & Gabe

Very sweet story, slow burn and realization from both MCs that they are ready for more in their lives. DJ saw Gabe and all his normal player ways fell away. Gabe was instantly attracted but had his son and the congregation to consider. Each comes around and decide to go all in. Cliff was adorable and the Gladiator guys were great. Enjoyed this one a lot.

So, I struggled with that book. It was a DNF on several points. I'm glad I finished it, the story itself is not bad and also interesting. But somehow I didn't like the writing. U can't even tell where the problem is. It just doesn't grab me the way I wish it would. I will give the next still a go because I'm interested in the MCs it's featuring.
