The apocalypse has not been kind to Fiona, and the people who keep her are cruel. When a stranger by the name of Hunter pays to take her life, a twist of fate sets her free and has her begging him to save her from her tortured existence.
Despite his hesitation, he agrees. But their coupling is far from ideal, because Hunter is not like most men.
He’s a serial killer.
Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Fiona should know that playing with fire will get you burned. But she can’t help herself.

This is a first for me as I have never read a dark romance centered in an apocalyptic setting. The central couple are battling their own demons, other factions that are competing for resources, and the undead. It's a fascinating subgenre I need to check out.
The MFC and MMC, Fiona and Hunter, meet by chance as a seriL killer who was released early due to the apocalypse and a need to people to act as civilian police as the world crumbles. He ends up as part of a larger group called the Keepers. When they discover his past criminal records, they decide he is too much of a risk and try to kill him, but he gets away.
On one of his hunts, he finds Fiona in.a brothel being run by a total creeper called Madam Levy. He tells her he wants to kill one of the girls, and she decides Fiona is the best choice. Instead of Fiona, he tortures and kills Madam Levy. And then has consensual sex with Fiona. He takes her with him, but she runs at the first change.
The rest of the book is him looking for her, finding her, and developing an actual relationship. Then more action, more of the Keep, and a sweet yet dark HEA.
I'd recommend this book to any dark romance reader. The spice is on the tame side (3🌶s). That's rather low for me, but I really enjoyed the book overall.
I have never read anything in this series or by this author before.Watching Hunter and Fiona change together was strange but also strangely endearing.Hunter' s inability to feel anything was chilling. He saw everything logically, having no emotions to temper or change his perception of things. As their relationship deepened,Hunter changed from Fiona's accepting his darkness but also the necessity of his dessimating the predators, pedofiles ,rapists and other evil preying on the women in his area.It is ironic how his evil is used to eradicate the evils of other monsters.Fiona allows her own brokenness and darkness to match Hunter's.This is a strange, dark story of not fitting in or changing, but accepting and using your darkness as a tool to help others.I am going to start buying the earlier books in this series.I liked this alot, but should give a warning that it is dark, twisted and contains disquieting violence.
This was a quick read with disturbing and depraving elements. Hunter and Fiona are trying to survive a zombie apocalypse within a broken society. Hunter is a serial killer who enjoys torturing and killing people who are guilty of dark deeds. He meets Fiona by chance and feeling she has nothing to lose she asks to go with him.
This is a very dark romance with both characters having terrible backstories. Simply they’re both psychopaths! It was interesting to see how Hunter’s relationship with Fiona changed from cold and indifferent to protective and loved.
I haven’t read any other books in this series and because of that I was confused about aspects of the world the characters lived in. For that reason it didn’t engage me completely. So I’m not sure if it’s great to read this as a standalone…
If you decide to give this book a go please read the trigger warnings first as it will be disturbing for some people.
Might be one of my favorite of the series. This one takes two people with very dark pasts and allow them to heal together...through some unorthodox means...
I liked the book and thought their story made sense until the 3rd act conflict. I fee like this series really tortures the reader with needless drama once they are in the Hold. I didn't get why Hunter didn't want to tell his story...He even convinced himself to do it to save Fiona from going to someone else. That whole part felt a bit overworked - but- I still liked the book and the ending. I just hope the next one doesn't have the same conflict at the Hold.
This book was beyond dark, disturbing, and twisted–and I absolutely loved it. I devoured it in two sittings. Yep. Like Fiona,I developed a crush on a serial killer. What's wrong with me? I suppose I'm just addicted to these S3xy little apocalyptic reads. Confession time. I am a dark romance lightweight. I suppose what draws me to this series is the tongue-in-cheek dark humor. That and the bad-arse men who will do anything to satisfy their ladies.
"How is she so capable of turning my world on its head?"
This is the eighth book and the series and one of the very best. It's incredibly dark but once you learn both of their pasts it's understandable. Fiona was shocked she was falling for a serial killer but I can relate. I absolutely adored Hunter. It's impossible to get into detail without spoiling the very enjoyable plot. All I can say is I really loved it!
I loved this one. Interesting twist to psychopaths. This is number 2 of my favorites though because Alistair and Britney is number 1 fave of the series! Will there be more?
