The apocalypse has not been kind to Fiona, and the people who keep her are cruel. When a stranger by the name of Hunter pays to take her life, a twist of fate sets her free and has her begging him to save her from her tortured existence.
Despite his hesitation, he agrees. But their coupling is far from ideal, because Hunter is not like most men.
He’s a serial killer.
Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Fiona should know that playing with fire will get you burned. But she can’t help herself.

I was not sure what I was getting into when I selected “Killer Bargain” but I was in the mood for dark and twisted. Dystopian society, check. Zombies, check. Serial killers who torture? Humm, OK. Well, I was in for a surprise - I REALLY enjoyed this book! I’m not kidding, this book was all kinds of dark but a really satisfying dark. Take heart though, it’s a romance that is very spicy and will have a happy ending.
MMC Hunter is a serial killer who is unable to feel emotions or empathy and he really enjoys his torture and killing. He meets our FMC Fiona at a brothel in this new dystopian era where females are rare and treated as commodities. It’s a new world of might makes right and survival trumps compassion. Fiona was sold by her boyfriend into sexual servitude and her life became a nightmare of being brutally used and abused. But she is a survivor and she sees an opportunity to gain freedom by making a bargain with the man who enjoys killing.
I’m not going to spoil anything for you but let me say that it was fascinating to be inside Hunter’s mind especially as he meets Fiona and becomes increasingly addicted to her company. Is it possible for a person with no emotions or empathy to fall in love? And what does that look like in the mind of a psychopath? It was all very captivating and kept me up late into the night reading!
I have not read the previous books in the Kings and Queens of the Apocalypse series but I did not feel lost - thus, you can read this as a stand alone. The author does a good job giving you pertinent info to close the knowledge gaps and make the story whole on it’s own. That said, I’m addicted and want to learn the back stories of many of the characters introduced at “The Keep”.

Hunter, the male human lead, was a serial killer before the dead rose, killing those who preyed on innocence. Now, he’s been masking but the people he’s been working with have started to see through to who he is, so he fakes his death and disappears.
Fiona, the female human lead, has been sold repeatedly in this world where there are no rules. When Hunter appears and tortures her captor before offering her sex, she’s shocked but glad to be rescued and willing to offer him whatever he wants. But she disappears from Hunter’s safe house.
Months later, Hunter saves her from the undead, only to find she’s furious at him for selling her again…but he didn’t…He hasn’t been able to get her out of his mind so maybe they can come to a mutual accommodation…
This story is dual POV, well written, and a DARK, post apocalyptic romance. Note, DARK; please read the author’s content note. I enjoyed Fiona’s tenacity and resilience. I enjoyed Hunter’s character development, and how he came to value Fiona and their relationship, though he’d never had one before. I enjoyed the relationship development. I enjoyed the intimate scenes and Hunter’s learning there. I enjoyed the secondary characters present in the last part of the story and the slice of life in the Keep that showed how happy right now the characters who’ve led other stories in the series are.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
When the author said this was a dark book, she was not kidding. This story takes place in an apocalyptic period following the spread of a virus raising the dead. There is lawlessness and desperate people do desperate things. It is among these seedy people that Hunter finds Fiona. Hunter is a socialpath/psychopath, serial killer. It is during the torture that he gets his pleasure. Fiona is a broken young woman who has been betrayed by those she thought what protect her. She has been through more than any one person should have to endure. Once the two come together, there is a slow change in both of them. Each influencing the other, not totally for the better. As surprising as it sounds, Hunter actually made me laugh a few times. He has a bluntness that is....refreshing. "Because if I'm going to kill him, I have to know where he is"- Hunter I like that the author included Hunter's backstory so we got a chance to understand how he became who is in present day. His motives for choosing his victims are righteous. This is my first book in this series. I think I need to go back and read the rest to get a clearer understand of The Keep and why it is set up the way that it is. I kind of got lost in the discussion in the epilogue. I recommend this book for those he like dark stories. If you like the show Dexter, I think you will enjoy this book.

Hunter (H), an enigmatic serial killer of those who harm others, crosses paths with Fiona (h), a woman entangled in a dark world of sexual abuse who sees more than just his violence and joins up with him. Hunter is a chilling enigma who pursues his own flavor of justice, albeit through unconventional means, in a dystopian future. As the story unfolds, you become aware of the horrendous circumstances that created him, showcasing the inner turmoil and rationale behind his actions. Fiona, equally enigmatic, brings a sense of balance to Hunter's darkness, creating a magnetic and dangerous chemistry between the two characters. Their dark and twisted romance is filled with tension and passion, making every encounter electrifying. The juxtaposition of their dark deeds against their undeniable connection offers a unique reading experience. Loved the life they were leading together - roasting pigeons and rooftop greens. Not too thrilled with them the outcome for Hunter - being pulled out & used when his services were needed. A dark post-apocalyptic romance with lots of violence, intensity, vengeance, and heat.
The apocalypse has come, making survival the only goal for most. In a world where everyone is looking out for themselves, there are those who are out to avenge wrongs done to others. Hunter is one of these, although he has been labelled a psychopath, a serial killer. Only Fiona sees him as what he truly is.
I liked this book even though it was disturbing. There are depictions of graphic violence and torture in a world that is brutal at best. What Hunter and Fiona have seen and experienced is horrific, but they manage to survive, supporting each other with understanding and loyalty, and finding the love that sustains them through it all.

Hunter is exactly as his name suggests. He’s a hunter, but he hunts those who harm others. He’s labeled a serial killer because he tends to torture those he kills, but he’s a serial killer with a conscience since he only takes out the bad guys.
Fiona was sold to a brothel by someone she trusted. When she sees her chance at freedom, Fiona doesn’t hesitate to make a bargain with her very own serial killer. He’s the only one capable of freeing her and keeping her safe.
This was a dark and twisted story but the redemption for these characters who have had painful pasts was an intriguing story. Overall, very interesting story with some dark elements. Possible triggers.

Killer Bargain is the eighth book in The Kings and Queens of the Apocalypse series and the darkness and depravity continue with this book. The story has some elements to it that I found a bit harder to take, and ended up putting the book away a couple of times to go read something lighter before coming back to pick this book up again. But that is what I have found with this series, even though I still cannot stop reading it. This story though takes a pitch black darker and very twisted subject that roiled my stomach and made me winch as the H is not a hero at all and instead is really someone you would run from in a split second. Not sure I would read this book again but I will keep with the series if there are more books.
This series had been great and this book is just as good if not better than the rest. This was about Hunter who loves to torture and Fiona, the girl he finds and claims. So much drama and danger in this book. The friction and uncertainty between Hunter and Fiona initially gives way to a somewhat unique relationship and then love. The romance is certainly there. The concept in this book is very much an apocalypse end of the world, type trope, with a romance basis. The chemistry between the two really was passionate, and well done. I have always enjoyed Lark's writing and these stories make for unusual and original books that are very well done and highly enjoyable. Great work!!
Very dark and twisted book. Hunter is a serial killer who enjoys torturing people Fiona was sold by an ex boyfriend to be used and abused as a sex worker. Hunter finds Fiona at his latest kill and she asks to go with him. Then Fiona is kidnapped by someone Hunter knew and it takes months to find her again. The relationship changes as they fall in love, they make the other a better person. And all this on top of fighting and killing zombies also. I had to go buy the rest of the books in the series.

Hunter needed his story and I’m so glad he got it! I loved it. It was so him. And Fiona was his match in all ways. Their sadism matched both coming from a deep place. Their passion for each other matched, starting just physically and moving emotionally. Good interconnection with the rest of the series. So good.
