Months after the apocalypse came to the former United States, the McKinney family began their trek up the eastern seaboard to a refuge in the mountains of WV. 19-year-old JC tells the story of their adventurous journey battling Raiders and zombies to reach their new home with his former Marine mother leading the way. After her parents died in the attacks, his best friend Annabelle joined JC, his younger sister Jules, and his mom for the journey. It is a tale of a strong family battling impossible odds with no room for mistakes.
Now I’m not much of a zombie story person but I definitely enjoyed this twist. Not my usual kind of book I read but I thoroughly enjoyed the story telling. Once I got into the book I didn’t want to stop reading. I’m left with a few questions and need some answers. Well done. That’s how to get more people needing a second book.
the book follows a family traveling to a safe area in West Virginia during a zombie apocalypse. The story is told from the perspective of JC, who is 19 years old, and he tells us about their journey, the battles they face, the zombies they encounter, and everything they go through along the way.
His mom is a former Marine, and she pretty much runs their group like a military operation, using her background to keep everyone alive and organized. As they travel, they meet other survivors, including other kids and people with military experience, and they all end up working together to make the dangerous trip to West Virginia.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I’m giving it four stars. I read an early version, so it hadn’t gone through all of its final edits yet, but I know the author has done several rounds of editing since then, so those issues should be much less noticeable now. Even so, it was still a really solid read.
One thing I liked a lot was the character development. JC starts out very much like a 19 year old, but as the story goes on, you can really see him mature, and I thought that growth was done well. I also appreciated the military aspect of the book. I’m not a military person myself, but it’s very clear that the author either has experience or did strong research.
The zombies are called Murdocks. So if you enjoy zombie stories, military focused narratives, or post-apocalyptic books in general, I think you would really enjoy this one. I liked that it was told from a younger perspective, and the banter between JC and his sister was one of my favorite parts.
I’d definitely recommend picking it up and giving it a try. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
