3 stars is generous, and it’s just because I used to love this series. I have lingering love for Gryphon, North, and Atlas, and they get some good moments (but very few). But really, I haven’t seen a series start strong and then fall off THIS hard since Game of Thrones.
This final book is a mix of boring, frustrating, and anticlimactic. Oli used to be a great heroine in the first 3 books, but now, her personality is just being a simp for her guys, and Nox most of all.
Since last book did such a hack job with Nox’s character, that continues to ruin this story. (To recap: He was hideously awful for most of the series; degrading, humiliating, and sexually assaulting Oli. Then instead of giving him an arc where he grows and changes or even apologizes and owns up to his shit, Tragic Bonds used his trauma to justify it and let him off the hook. Then, the Soul Bond, which makes no sense, was used as a Deus Ex Machina magic fix for his relationship with Oli – instead of them coming together in a way that felt developed at ALL. He’s one of the most incoherently written heroes I’ve ever read. And, it’s brought Oli down as a heroine, too, since it's made her a doormat for him).
This book REALLY wants us to have moved on from the Nox stuff. At one point, Oli says, “He was set on hating my guts and stirring shit up, until he just needed to figure some shit out for himself.” Minimizing his behavior isn’t cute! And this isn’t even true, since he DIDN’T figure anything out for himself – the nonsensical Soul Bond was used as a Deus Ex Machina fix! In another scene later, Oli says, “I’m sick of fully grown men thinking they can hurt the women around them without consequences.” That’s supposed to be a badass moment. But it just makes me roll my eyes, because, hello! Nox hurt her, and got 0 consequences for it!
I can’t tell if these moments are the author trying to retcon Nox’s past behavior, or if it’s Oli being a hypocrite (waving off how Nox treated her, while also claiming to hate men who hurt women). Or both of those things.
As far as the plot goes, the God stuff is vague and the mythology of it is poorly explained, so it's all just boring. And it feels very “too little, too late,” because we should have learned it sooner, like in Book 4 or 5. An info-dump in the 11th hour of a series isn’t good storytelling. The worldbuilding is also too convoluted. Since the gods have names, this means that now, Oli’s guys have their regular names, AND nicknames from her Bond, AND god names. (For example: North is also The Dark One AND now he’s also The Crux). 3 names for each of the 5 heroes? Get out of here! Keeping track of each guy’s new God Name made lots of scenes needlessly confusing.
Although side characters like Sage, Sawyer, and their Bond groups are fun, the amount of focus they get FEELS like they exist to set up a spinoff, but that’s apparently not happening. So, it feels very, “What’s the point?” The last book in a series should be about tying up loose ends. So why are we spiraling out to learn about Sage’s 4th bond, Wick? There was no reason to introduce him in this book instead of sooner. If Sage isn’t getting a spinoff, why even introduce him at all? Just make her Bond group 3 guys! There’s so much stuff like that –random side characters and subplots that don’t matter. Similar to the past few books, this book keeps skipping over anything of substance, and instead has repetitive scenes of characters eating and showering, or filler of characters tiling bathrooms.
The final conflict with the antagonists is ridiculously anticlimactic, since they’re random villains who feel like cannon fodder extras. I don’t understand why Silas and Atlas’ parents were killed off last book. It would have been SO much more emotionally compelling if Atlas’ parents or Silas were the final threat, instead of random nameless characters that hold no emotional weight.
On top of all of this, I STILL have unanswered questions from earlier in the series. (For example: what was that scene in the first book when Gabe was passing a note to some guy in the locker room at a football game? Or what even is Oli's 3rd gift that she was still being cagey about last book?) This series set up a ton of questions and then just…didn’t answer some of them! There's not even resolution to some things within this story, like what happens to Aurelia and Jericho.
It's not all bad. There are a couple satisfying moments The epilogue is good. But the satisfying moments are few and far between, surrounded by bullshit.
As for Oli and her guys, Atlas and Gabe have been sidelined for the past few books, and that continues. It’s clear the author is most interested in Gryphon, North, and Nox. So why not just write a 3 guy RH instead of a 5 guy one? I love Atlas, so I don’t WANT him gone. But it’s annoying to read about Oli fawning over Nox, and then be like, “Atlas is sad – I’ll comfort him later!” and then “later” never happens. That’s not how a good RH works.
As this series has gone on, it’s become clear that this author lacks the skill to balance a 5 guy RH. She also lacks the skill to write a story without more plot holes than Swiss cheese. There’s no way I’ll read any more paranormal books from her. This series was good in the first 3 books, and turned into a hot mess in the back half. After the quality of the previous book, I’m disappointed but not surprised that this whole thing ended with a whimper instead of a bang.
Lots of highs and lows (mostly lows) but to describe the finale in one word- Disappointing
Starting the review with the first three books of the series in my mind and honestly they were absolutely perfect. They were lighthearted, easygoing, plot and character driven with smut so good you'll want more. The fourth and fifth books, although average but still enjoyable especially the way they ended and with the character development for Nox taking the wheel.
Up to that point it didn't bother me much. In comes the sixth book aka the big finale and I'm so so heartbroken. I loved the series so much and this finale makes the rest of the series look so bad.
So what went wrong? 1. Plot- It completely lost it, it's all over the place and boy it's messy. There's no clarity, direction and reading it felt like reading the first draft of the book. The story even tho it's supposed to be action packed, isn't. It's bland. The author by introducing "god bonds" made the story unnecessarily complex, and she couldn't handle it (sorry). I still have a hundred questions and there are no answers to them. 2. Characters- Can't believe I'm saying this but Atlas wins in this one. He was the most consistent, likable and one to make the most contribution when it comes to development. Gryphon takes the second place, because his bond intrigued me a lot. The rest of the guys (sadly including North) took a backseat and I ain't happy about that. I am so pissed at Oli, like she has nothing new to her. Her personality became boring and repetitive just like the books. There's no sense of selflessness to her. 3. Repetitiveness- If I were to get a dollar for every time the characters said "mine, eternal, god bonds" I would be as rich as Rishi Sunak. Also, the plot revolves around three basic things- sex, training and planning and the planning has no execution. This has been going on in all of the books idk why we didn't get straight up action in this one. 4. Pacing- Extremely slow. Slower than a sloth. Also, I personally think that book four, five and six could all have been pushed up together, it would have been more enjoyable. I started skimming through the 61% mark and I did not regret it one bit.
What went right? 1. Romance- The reverse harem is executed brilliantly. 2. Spice- It's juicy but it's not enough. So mixed feelings about that. 3. Ending- Expected a bit more, but it's good enough considering all the cons of the book. The epilogue was fine, but considering it was RH I kinda expected to get a moment with each of the guys. Also didn't think Atlas was going to follow through on the Fallows thing lol. 4. Covers- The series has such beautiful covers and I don't think anyone can deny that.
Please note that I have full sympathy towards the author as she wrote this book in tough conditions while recovering from cancer (from what I hear- feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). But while I sympathize, I cannot overlook how bad this finale was. It would have made so much sense for her to take time off and delay this book and write it with full heart. The book has no substance to offer and that's the reality of it. At times it's just best to stick with simple and effective instead of overcomplicating things and let it all get completely ruined.
I still recommend the series to anyone who wants to try this for the sake of reading a good reverse harem especially if you can stomach the shortcomings of the finale.
This book was beyond disappointing. Honestly the only reason I pushed through this book is because it was the last book in the series and I had to see it through. After book 4 things started to get so repetitive and drag on for way too long. And this book too that too a whole new level. I’m so sad because I loved this series but it just should have ended after 4 books because WHAT WAS THAT?
BIGGEST disappointment of the year! Are we surprised though or was it predictable?
Okay, I’m going to attempt to not be too harsh because I know it’s J.Bree’s first paranormal series, and you CAN tell…
Well, let’s just say that the first 3 books were absolutely amazing, it was a favorite series of mine and I couldn’t get enough of Oli and her bonds.
I think a lot of reasons can be associated to the downfall of this series but one of them is definitely the characters assassination of Oli and her bonds. We started of this series with different guys (RH you know) and different personalities, some were complex and interesting and the more the story progressed the less well written they were. All of them are now one dimensional, they have only one personality trait and they are absolutely boring. I’ve complained about this before but Gabe and Atlas are not well exploited, they feel like an afterthought or side characters to be honest and I’m disappointed that it didn’t changed in this book.
The world building is STILL very confusing, plus a lot of things were unanswered… Maybe she’s going to add a novella ? I’ve re-read the entire series in preparation of this installment and I CAN tell you that couple of scenes makes no sense at all (did I miss something? What’s Oli’s third gift???) I didn’t like the ending personally, I couldn’t care less about the antagonist and I think that instead of the characters spending tons of time doing absolutely nothing or boring stuff (scene when they are eating in the cafeteria, doing manuals jobs or whatever boring stuff that happened since they move to the sanctuary) it would’ve been more interesting if we’ve gotten a couple of information about the bonds or some other characters WAY earlier.
I get the feeling that the pacing was very strange, we spend too little time learning important details and a couple of major key scenes happened off pages whereas we spend plenty of time doing nothing. Let’s just say that the plot went downhill since the moment they moved to sanctuary (around book 3/4). Some deaths were totally unnecessary and didn’t moved me. It was for shock value and shows poor or lazy writing skills.
I think this series deserved to be shorter, like with fewer books, I’m always one for long ass series, but this one felt dragged and diluted as fuck. It should’ve been maybe a 4 books series with longer publishing times between each books, it feels like J Bree wanted this series to be out quickly and she sacrificed quality over quantity. This series definitely deserved a better ending than this one, and I’m so sad to see it end that way.
Hell, I could complain about this book even more but I’m going to stop here, I was expecting to be disappointed but NOT that much… !
2.5 stars ⭐️
I don’t think I’ll ever re-read this series again. Don’t come for me (especially knowing how hard I was at the Hannaprep Ford series) but I think Hannaprep series it’s J.Bree’s best so far. This genre suit her writing style much more than paranormal and the ending was very satisfying.
𝑷𝒓𝒆-𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 ˚.🎀༘⋆ I think this series would have benefitted SO MUCH from being condensed down into 3 or 4 books, but I’m still excited to see how this will be wrapped up!💕
Unbroken Bonds is the final installment of this epic journey J Bree has taken us on with The Bonds that Tie series. Oli, Nox, North, Gryphon, Gabe and Atlas, be still my heart. I love them each and every one of them. The suspense, havoc, friendships, tragedies, love, and steam (Chapter Thirteen, I am looking at you!) have made this last book an epic one. I was a bit bummed about the lack of action—it seemed a bit anticlimactic to me after the buildup from five books.
I do wish we are able to see more in the epilogue or aftermath. I’d love to have a more in depth look into their lives as a bonded group without all the drama. The ending felt a bit lackluster and rushed. I also thought or maybe just wanted to know the kid situation in the epilogue. I mean who doesn’t want to see North, Nox and Gryphon as dads.
Quotes: “perfection incarnate, and every fiber of my being is filled with need. A need to have them, protect them, covet them, break them apart and build them back up in the way that only I can because we were made for each other. They are mine as surely as I am theirs, as surely as the world spinning endlessly in the vastness of the expanding universe.”
“I’m not discussing anything with the vessels, so run along now and give me the gods so the adults can speak.”
“That is the difference between this time and last. This time, we’re going to survive this. All of us. I’m not going to kill the vessel. I’m going to use it to keep you forever.”
“Instead, we are cursed with nothing but destruction, death, and decay, heartache and loneliness, over the span of a millennia. This memory hurts my bond.”
Seriously Nox is just the worst person and the way this final book just brushes it under the rug, smoothes the issues over with some weird tantric dream-sharing and then tells the reader to relax because he was molested as a child so he should be allowed some freedom to harass, bully and assault his MUCH YOUNGER intended soulmate too is INSANE and I hated every second. Actually ruined this series for me, and that's without even mentioning the way the side characters just became paler and paler with each installment.
*This rude book trying to gaslight me into thinking the Nox abuse scandal is over*
Me:
There is a 10% chance I might enjoy this
Honestly the character development is cartoonish :/
If a romance has 6 books, I expect more substance.
Oh, and the side characters become less important in every book. So disappointing!
I'm utterly in love with J Bree's writing. I honestly don't know what to do with myself now that this series is complete. *Luckily she is coming out with the mortal fates* This book had me feeling all the feels. I can't adequately express my love without spoiling anything. I will say that there are moments in this book where you'll go from laughing your head off to sobbing uncontrollably.
The final book in a six book series about a strong, gifted runaway turned whiny, self-obsorbed central in a 6 person WhyChoose.
I should preface this with I feel very disconnected from this series which is incredibly disappointing because I was such a huge fan of the first half.
So let’s go.
LIKES: 1. POVs - We literally get a POV from each character which can be confusing sometimes since the voices/character speaking styles aren’t very distinct, but I enjoyed hearing more from the MMCs. I also didn’t mind seeing flashbacks to their previous lives through the godbond.
2. Atlas and Gabe. These two characters have a bit more speaking time so we get a little more insight into their emotional state, connection to their gifts/godbonds, and the most interesting development their bromance. Oli even states that they essentially are a threesome within the group.
3. Nox and North. Some godbond flashbacks show that these two are incredibly close brothers throughout their hundreds of reincarnations. I believe they are platonic soulmates, and it definitely resonates throughout the series. Love this.
4. Nox’s incidental is a cool power and necessary to the final battle. I am not a fan of the handling of this character’s development throughout the series, but I can finally see what the author was hoping to achieve. Unfortunately, she did a complete disservice to her readers with zero accountability, zero growth (soul bonding is the worst thing ever. For me, it’s on par with, “and it was all a dream.” It’s a cop out.), and inauthentic final character that feels completely different from the previous 4 1/2 books. Also, childhood trauma as justification for sexual violence is never acceptable. Which leads to my dislikes.
DISLIKES 1. I’m not sure the author fully understands consent, and it’s reflected in her characters. This, in turn, causes her FMC to regress from a strong, determined badass to a whiny, self-victim blaming, abuser apologist. I loved Oli in Book 1 & 2, I was concerned about her development in 3, and Book 4 onward negated everything I enjoyed about her. Furthermore, at one point she breaks a man’s hand because she can’t stand “men who abuse women.” It’s like,Oh really? Because I’m sure Nox was emotionally and mentally abusive with a side of sexual assault.
2. PLOT HOLES. PLOT HOLES. PLOT HOLES. What was the note Gabe gave to the other team in the locker room in Book 1? What was he sensing before they got on the bike, but said not to be concerned? How do the gods choose their vessel? What are they gods of and why are they here? Where is Oli’s damn car? What is Oli’s third power (Is it the astral projection?) How did Gryphon’s parents come back from the dead (considering it is mentioned he and Kyrie became close when they lost them.)? What exactly causes bonding (orgasms?) and how did nobody notice the lack of power growth with the fake bonds when they have such extensive recordings of their history? Were Oli’s parents true bonds(the question is literally asked by Oli but never answered)? Why weren’t they involved in the gifted community and how did the Resistance find out about Oli’s gift? How did the Resistance infiltrate every powerful bond group except the Dravens, and still not know who Oli’s bonds were for a large portion of the series? What activates the godbonds since there’s such varying timelines for each gifted? I’m sure I have more, but you get the point. So many plot holes.
3. Godbond Names. Why wasn’t Oli’s godbond calling her mates these names from the beginning? They were just thrown at us, some at the end of Book 5 and all in Book 6. Also, some names make no sense. (Soothsayers could predict the future. Not exactly in Gryphon’s gift well.)
4. Big Bad - I had zero investment in this character’s defeat. I hated Silas. I hated Gracie. I hated Atlas’s dad. Even the occasional mention of Atlas’s aunt would have foreshadowed her as the Big Bad. There were so many other characters who we were invested in that could have been the final enemy instead i think we were supposed to be 😯 but it was more 😒.
5. Many of the plot lines throughout the series felt regurgitated. Oli saves Sage in Book 1. Oli saves Kyrie in Book 2. Kieran is beaten by the resistance in Book 2/3. Kieran is beaten by the resistance in Book 6. Etc etc.
6. Unnecessary side characters. Wick, Aro, Lahn, what purpose did these characters serve except to take up space? If Sage isn’t getting a spin off, why should we care about any of these characters especially in the final hour?
7. Forgotten side characters. What happened to Gracie(she could have potentially been a big bad and I would have been pleasantly/believably shocked)? What happened to Aurelia, Jericho, and Gryphon’s mom? Are they in jail forever? Did Kieran fully heal? Did Riley?
8. Important things happen off page, and we’re told about it through exposition. Don’t worry, we get plenty of Gabe the Builder, North annoyed with bathroom tiles, and Oli just looooves seafood. Never mind that Vivian, one of the only remaining parental-esque figures to Oli, dies off page. Terrible treatment of a beloved side character.
Overall, this series was very much on par with GoT. Strong start. Terrible finish.

✅ Gorgeous cover ✅ Love interests and secondary characters ✅ Multiple POVs ✅ Reverse harem ✅ Smut ✅ Action ✅🆗 Main character ✅🆗 Powers (because they are not using them efficiently) 🆗 Repetitive plot 🆗❌ Underwhelming final confrontation ❌ I still don’t understand why Oli didn’t use her superpower to destroy the Resistance sooner ❌ Overuse of the words “bond” and “bonded” ❗️❗️Trigger warning: terrorism, deaths, murders
While I enjoyed this series overall, this final book was disappointing. This series started so strong with the first three books, but sadly, it slowly went downhill after that. The last 3 books were not bad, I still enjoyed the adventure and the characters, but the second half of the series was not as addictive and engaging as the first half. I feel as though the series lost its direction a little bit after the third book…
Unbroken Bonds is a continuation of the repetitiveness seen in the fifth book. It’s all about Oli having sex, Oli and her guys training, and some planning that never really leads to anything because, despite the hours they spend researching and strategizing, it still feels like they are just waiting for the Resistance to make their move before they retaliate.
My main issue with this book and the two previous ones is that the plot is now all over the place, and it’s being uselessly dragged on. Oli has had the power to eradicate the Resistance since the beginning, and they are somehow still engaging in isolated fights against them. I know the addition of the God Bonds in this one complicated things, but I am only talking about the Resistance here. It annoys me so much that this particular plotline was dragged on for so long. It makes no sense.
Oli is stronger than everyone, she can rip out souls from hundreds of people at the same time, and she can do it over an incredible distance too, so why. The fuck. Are. They. Waiting? Why are they still twiddling their thumbs and waiting for the Resistance to call the shots when they could have destroyed them 2 books ago? I talked about it in my review of the fifth book, so I will leave it at that, but this is the aspect of this series that made me lower my rating with each passing book.
The introduction of the God Bonds also complicated things, and not necessarily in a good way. It would have been interesting if we knew about them before this final book. Now it just seems like a last-minute addition to the story that was not fully developed.
Oli grew a lot in the first half of the series, but that growth stopped somewhere in the fourth book. She hasn’t changed even with everything that happened to her bonded group in the past few weeks, and I hate to say this, but she felt a little bland in this final book.
Thankfully, her guys were there, but even they were not as amazing and awesome as they used to be. Gryphon’s bond was very intriguing, but we didn’t learn much about him, and North sadly took a back seat in this final book, which is a tragedy, because he was my favorite. Atlas and Gabe were steady and consistent throughout the series though, and it was sweet to see them become best buddies too, while also being there to support Oli and try their best to make her smile.
I feel like I complained a lot in this review, but there were also some positive aspects to this book. The reverse harem dynamic is now well-established and running (mostly) smoothly, and there is some spicy smut too. It was also nice to see that the guys took the time to build trust and even friendship among themselves and that Atlas is now a “real” part of the bond. He is now only there for Oli anymore, he is fully integrated and accepted in the Draven bonded group.
Overall, I am really happy that I gave this series a try, because I fell in love with the characters, and I flew through the 6 books. It was engaging and addictive for the first half, but the second half felt a little all over the place at times, and it lacked focus and precision. The final book was also a little disappointing, but I would still recommend this series to reverse-harem lovers looking for their next addictive and sexy series. Just keep in mind that the first half of the series is the true gem, and the second half is just there to extend the plot and give us more smut... 🤷♀️
I wish the author decided to wrap it up in only 3 or 4 books, or that she developed a new plotline for the second half instead of uselessly dragging on the resistance plot, but it is what it is, and despite my annoyed rambling, I still enjoyed this series quite a lot.
Okay get ready cause I'm mad. First I pre-ordered this. Bad decision could've just read it on KU. The following are the reasons that made me regret paying good money for this instalment and almost ALMOST made me regret reading the series. 1. The series was 6 books long and THIS was the ending? You're telling me you had 346 pages and the actual battle was what 5 pages? 2. The pacing was a whole issue on another level. I knew from the start that the pacing was slow but holy moly the first 50% was just a fucking drag at this point. I was BORED. BORED. 3. The author spent too long describing the unnecessary fights and made the final battle anticlimatic. 4. Finally, the epilogue. YOU CALL THAT AN EPILOGUE? SERIOUSLY??!! 😑 The entire epilogue was just gryphon banging Oli. And Oli giving us a briefing of what the other guys were upto. What happened at the vote that you oh so gracious had North and Nox plan so meticulously? How was kieren at the end? What happened to riely? What about the draven baby? What happened to gryphon's mom and the other prisoners? WHAT WAS OLI'S THIRD POWER??!!! we never did get to know. And don't say soul bonding. Don't. Please. Thank you.
We're finally at the end of the Bonds That Tie series and I'm a little sad it's over! Only a little, just because I'm happy Oli and everyone finally get their much-deserved happy ending 😂 This whole series has been such a fun trip and I already can't wait for J. Bree's next fantasy/paranormal romance series!
Sorry to say it, but this book could have been an email.
Unbroken Bonds was an extremely underwhelming ending to a series that should have wrapped up two books ago. Just more of the same old song and dance that I am so over. Oli talking endlessly about how much she trusts her bonded, how obsessed she is with them, how much she wants to kill anyone who would hurt her bonded, blah blah blah. There is so much repetition to the dialogue and key words and phrases are painfully overused. I’d write them out for you, but I fear I might simply pass away from overexposure if I have to read them again.
Honestly, this went pretty much the way I expected it to go. I did still have a small kernel of hope that the author was headed somewhere interesting after so much build up, but oh well. At least I can say that I persevered.
If you’re wondering, I’m Team Gryphon. 😏 I’m also team pick a team, so maybe no more reverse harem for me. 🥴🙃
Giving this 3 Stars for nostalgia’s sake, because remember how good the first three books were? 🥲 Overall I still like this series, but man it should’ve been at most 4 books long. This all felt like filler and repetition, and everything new wasn’t great. I think maybe I was just ready for it to end, and that jaded me.
Here are some of my nitpicky thoughts that I couldn’t get over: •Oli being so upset and confused as to why people were avoiding her and not being welcoming. Also Oli having a mansion to herself while everyone else smashed into tiny houses and struggled 🙃 •They literally mentioned “the Chef” 200 times per book since the beginning of the series, and never say his name. Not appreciating the person who goes out of his way to make you stupid seafood every day really made me mad 😂 •The most anticlimactic boss fight I’ve ever read. Even worse than breaking dawn 👀
⚜𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐈⚜ I'm not really in a reviewing mood but i feel like i still need to write a couple words together to end this properly. So here we go, i loved this entire series for it's characters alone, but there were some major aspects that i thoroughly disliked. In my opinion this should have been a trilogy and not a 6 books series. 𝐈𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐥, 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥. If J. Bree's goal was to have 6 books to represent each member of the harem, then the author should have added more plot and development to have enough materials to last that long. Having that same structure for the first 3 books is one thing but having it for all 6 was very underwhelming. 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝, 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐲. ⋘•⋙---------•⪼⪻•---------⋘•⋙ Now ignoring all of those filler chapters and just focusing on the actual plot and characters I'll say these last 3 books were on par with the rest of the series but slightly better. 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥. I really loved every goddamn characters and was hungry for more development and growth that was more show than tell. Not to mention a lot more meaningful dialogues between them when we had some major truth revealed. Despite all of that i continued reading because the concept of bonds and ancient gods that was introduced here was wonderfully intriguing. Even though the author focused on the wrong aspect of her story, which was avoiding writing any major plot or character developments for as long as possible and drown us in fillers. But still I couldn't stop reading because all those little moments that i actually adored and cared about were looking at me with puppy dog eyes the second i thought about stopping. So here we are, I'm giving this series an overall of 3 stars, but I'll give this book a little 4 stars for those moments. ]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[ That cover!!! Sure the writing wasn't mind blowing but I was interested, I did read 5 books to get to this one. All to finally know the lore of the bonds and have the big final.
The 'big bad' takedown was underwhelming, but I could get past that. Really, even though all I could think of was the end of the Twilight books? You know? when they are all preparing for battle and how it ended up? that was the disappointed feeling I got.
And the way we got ZERO information about how these bonds came to be? I am going to talk about spoilers so stop here if you don't want to read any!
- The motive of Pain was just wanting world domination? drunk with power? ok... but like how did he find out about Oly in the first place? Why not make it like he was infatuated with her but she had her bonds and so he became bitter and motivated to eradicate the bond system altogether? Or even like, they took his bond forever because they were a power-hungry evil couple and he wants revenge? SOMETHING. - We got no details on how the gods came to be or how they started soul jumping?/cycle? - And like, the people and the gods have their own powers, so if a god is in a specific powered individual they then have that power even in the next cycle? HUH????? - Also, all the other bond groups and side characters? I felt like they got small moments, where they will show up and be bigger parts, but they just were there? And Gryphon's sister didn't even end up finding her bonds? Sage and her guys or Swayer and his group? And whatever happened to Atlas's sister and her bond? no clue because we forgot about all of them apparently.
I can't believe I read this series over a month all to end up like this.
Buddy Read with Bella 💕 I can't stop humming "How low can you go..." can you tell my expectations are on the floor?
I wanted to finish this book because I’ve read the previous five. This series definitely could have been shortened. Each book was very repetitive with the same old, fighting and stuff. I read 50% of this book and then she skipped straight to the epilogue.
3.75⭐ plot 3/5 spice 4/5🌶 Unbroken Bonds is the final installment of this epic journey. I still can't believe it's over, I'll miss North, NOX, Gryphon, GABE and Atlas 😖🥺
the spiceeee ESPECIALLY CHP 13🧎🏼♀️🧎🏼♀️
TBH I was expecting this book to be a little more than it was, although it was great the writing the plot the spice. But I was expecting more... yk in every last book of fantasy you expect to be more fantastic and epic and everything coming to end and lots of action, but this book... I found my myself bored in lots of parts of this book and just skimming them. The pacing was too slow ☹
Oli in this book was changed? I liked her more in the previous books. And the side characters were unnoticed 🤨 I wanted the same relationship between sage and Oli as it was in the previous books, but by each book it's like they were getting apart.🙁
It also felt as she was not giving every bond the time they deserved as like atlas (my baby) he needed some timeee, but she was like never really with them in this book except the sexy time. The first 40% was good but then things got repetitive and too slow, and the actual action was just in the last 5 chp!!
She should've been given more time with Gabe and Atlas. ESPECIALLY GABE And the scene where she talks to Gabe about kids was 💞 ADORABLE 💞
Nevertheless, I liked it. It could've been better, the ending felt a lot rushed and And the actual war just ended in like less than 2 chp 😐. I wanted it to be more heart-wrenching, more VICIOUS, more BRUTAL. I wanted PAIN.
Spoiler⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
Consuming the god's part and killing them was so rushed. Especially the pain-god UGH I wanted it more brutal, a little more hard 😬😬 and why tf did Vivian had to die I liked him 😭😭WHYYY
Spoiler end ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Questions that were left unanswered or not explained enough: And what was Oli's third power? What about the prisoners? What about her parents, I really needed to know more about them 🙁.
EVERY man in this book was scrumptious. Sawyer was my fav side character, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH 😤
I need a: North in my life-to cure my daddy issues, and he could spoil all he wants with his money. Nox- to fill up my toxic traits Gryphon - for everything in my life. Gabe- to fill up my need for an athlete player - hot- high-school boy, GOD I need him. Atlas- to fill my need for the good boy 😏 *apparently I want them all*🙄💅🏼
And also that epilogue 😭😭-(I liked it, but that's not an epilogue of 6 books SERIES 😭😭) I wanted to see them being happy... I mean, who wouldn't want to see Nox and North being dads.👀 😂
"Burn it all to the ground, Oleander. Burn it, and let's be done with it"
Firstly, thank you J. Bree for sharing this series, it may be my absolute favourite of all time. I rarely let books interfere with my sleep but i stayed up until 3am to finish this.
The final book in the Bonds That Tie series wraps the story up so beautifully. The Bonded group is incredibly loveable, their growth as individuals and as a group was impeccable and so satisfying and emotional to go through as a reader.
“Nobody deserves it more than you, Bonded. We are the ones who aren't worthy.”
While the plot of the series is very dark, Oli and (some) of her Bonded group makes up for it with their light-hearted banter and humour. Each of her bonds are so different from each other and all play an important part in all aspects of her life. Gabe is there to take the edge off by being the Labrador. Nox helps Oli with her more emotional side by understanding her trauma. Gryphon is her personal soldier and carer, in my opinion, Oli's favourite. North brings organisation and is a stable pillar for Oli. Atlas was the most important to Oli in the first couple of books as he had knowledge of her past and was empathetic, understanding and loving to her. This caused Atlas the longest to adjust to everyone else as they gave her absolute hell but he came around eventually.
I loved the god-bonds, who they were and their backstory with The Eternal (Oli's god-bond) and how they hadn't all been together at one time. Also, how they wouldn't always come out and deal with the situation unless Oli was in immediate danger and just left the Bonded group to their devices which was a lot of fun.
Throughout the series, the Bonded group knowingly went into numerous traps to face the rebellion. They were caught off guard so many times with something bad happening almost each time. It ALMOST became repetitive once the final battle came and they had a plan. This worked perfectly and I liked how it went so smoothly giving it a very satisfying feeling of success as you cheered them on with how brilliant Nox is.
I'm so happy they got their happily ever after, I would not have survived if one of them died at the end and didn't get brought back like Nox.
OH! I loved how much more we saw Sage and her Bonded group, I would adore a spin off series with these guys (please please please).
MY ONLY NEGATIVES 1. Epilogue was so short 2. I wanted more time with North, Nox, and Gabe
This review is mainly going to be about the entire series.
I can’t believe it’s all over! I fortunately didn’t have to wait for the next one to come out as I just binged them one after another but I’m still sad to see it go. The series as a whole was really great! I felt it didn’t lose what it was throughout entire thing so if you liked books one and two, you’ll like all of it.
This series has a good balance between the romance and the war with the Resistance. It definitely is a slow burn all around but it’s six books and I think it was done perfectly. If things went too fast, the last few books would have been boring and wouldn’t feel as well developed as it was. I also enjoyed how the author stretched out the relationships with all the guys. I loved watching them after they got together being cute and couple-y but I’m someone who loves reading about the chase and build up more so I really enjoyed getting that over a good chunk of the series.
The plot of the series I found was interesting as well. It was a fairly simple “bad guy wants power” plot but the action scene were all very well done. They didn’t feel too rushed or over explained and even though they kept saying how strong they were, I was nervous for them the whole time. The ending was a little anticlimactic in my opinion but with all the other great battle sequences, I didn’t feel it was lacking too much.
I wish we got more out of the epilogue too! Maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for this series and didn’t want it to end but, I wish we got more than just a scene with her and one of her guys and a quick summary of what everyone else was doing now. I also wished they came back to that brief conversation Gabe and her has as the school. I’m someone who finds that a nice way to show they’ve moved past this and are a happy family but I guess we’ll never know what happens.
Either way, I still loved the series. I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a blow burn, why choose with a kick ass FMC, loveable and very distinct MMCs, a lot of angst turned into a sweet romance, not an overwhelming plot and a good time :)
Woof! I'm probably one of the very few who wasn't happy with how this series ended, but Unbroken Bonds was very anticlimactic and not at all what I was expecting from a final book in a series.
Like I stated in my review of Tragic Bonds, I loved the god-bonds and the lore behind them and felt like that concept alone could have carried the whole series and added so much more depth to Oli's character and story. My biggest issue then and now, was how late they were introduced and then never really fleshed out in a way that was satisfying, especially since the god-bonds live inside and are the bond group (and essentially are why specific powers that each Bonded had were more powerful than others).
Plus, the battles and run ins with the god-bonds trying to take their bond group out were so boring compared to previous books. I swear Oli went harder than a motherfucker several times with Silas, and when it came to these final boss god-bonds it was a cake walk? Sure, all of Oli and the boys bonds are awake now and therefore they all have more power, but cmon... Give me some action! A close call or two, a serious injury... Not indigestion and naps -_-
AND ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!? The most unnecessary death in the entire series. wasn't enough? At least his death made sense, but felt like it was thrown in for fun and then was just completely brushed over. WHY?!?!
Other than that, I'm happy Oli and her Bonded got the happy ending they deserved... Although, I do wish the epilogue had been more of a time jump. I would have loved to see them as a family farther in the future, but it was a fine ending... I guess.
Overall though, I did enjoy more of The Bonds That Tie series, specifically books 4 & 5 where shit was crazy and the god-bonds were introduced, and all the Bonded were finally a thing. I just wanted more.
This series ender was a miss for me. I was bored. There was not enough happening the last three books plot wise. It was all pretty underdeveloped once the whole god bond thing got introduced. Such a shame because the first two books are so so good!! Even the epilogue was bland!
A lot of the big reason why I think the god storyline failed for me was the sheer amount of characters and character POVs introduced because of it. We already had a good size harem plus a fuckton of side characters, seriously soooo many, and now we have all these other entities living in our characters and we have to have all their POVs too! The action scenes especially were difficult to settle into because it would change character pov and god versus gifted pov too frequently. There were multiple times, in this book especially, where I had a hard time following the pov that I was in. Every character had the same thought patterns!
This one was also lacking J Brees signature writing style. I know she’s had a rough time the last few months and her writing has pretty obviously taken a hit.
I still loved all the characters in the end. Their love and loyalty and devotion to each other is so fun to read.

What a series! I loved book 1 and 2 so much. And if you’d told me at that point that I would be absolutely in love with every main character by book 6, even the Dravens, there is no way I would have believed you. BUT I DO. Everything and everyone came together (pun intended 😏) so perfectly in this series finale.
My ONLY criticism for this entire series is I feel like North didn’t do enough apologising and grovelling for being such an arrogant, enraging, bullying, controlling, vicious, cruel, fuckface in books 1 and 2. He did apologise (he did right? he actually said ‘I’m sorry’ at some point?) but not enough. Oleander forgave him way too easily and bonded with him way too soon. But by the end, still like him enough though. Still 5⭐️
I want to preface my review by stating that I adored the first few books of this series. Books 1-4 were captivating, thrilling, and really fun to read. Book 5 was good, but it missed the mark for me. Nevertheless, I anxiously awaited the release of the sixth book and downloaded it as soon as it was released—literally.
That said, when I say I'm shocked and disappointed in how this series ended, I mean that. It's tough to describe all the many ways this book left me dissatisfied and disillusioned with the series.
First of all,the story seems to meander along without much plot progressionand not a lot happening. It feels like a replica of Book 5 with slightly different settings. There is almost no further character development or character growth. No additional relationship growth takes place. The only time Oli gets to see her bonds is when they have sex. It's not romantic! That's not even mentioning that all her bonds are falling in second place next to Nox, who did nothing to earn her devotion above all others.
The action scenes were boring and read like repeats of all their other battles. The finale, when they fought the "big bad," felt anticlimactic and too easy.
The situation with Gryphon's dad was over the top and unnecessary. It felt like the author was scrounging up any drama she could find. Having the General and all those people leave the sanctuary and die literally served no purpose. Also, when he said he hoped Oli had been killed by the other god-bond (Athena Bassinger), why didn't North arrest him for suspected resistance sympathies? Why didn't they interrogate him, at least? At a minimum, Gryphon should have done a mental probe.
There are so many plot holes that will annoy me for eternity; I just know it. Here are some of the most annoying ones I noticed:
1) What is Oli's third and final gift that she was so reluctant to talk about?? This is a massive error that I cannot believe wasn't addressed.
2) What was written in the note Gabe passed to the captain of the opposing football team in book one?
3) Who was the "presence" Oli felt watching her in the woods after they captured Riley and Giovanna? We can make assumptions, but it was never revealed or discussed again. Who poisoned the water supply? Who controlled Sage to make her kill the shield? Unanswered questions.
4) What happened to Gryphon's mom? Did they kill her or just leave her locked up forever? What about Atlas's sister and brother-in-law, are they dead or released?
5) What happened to Giovanna, and why doesn't Sage ever get her revenge? Ugh, it's so unsatisfying. She’s never mentioned again after being captured.
6) If Penelope (North's assistant) was one of the god-bonds, then why didn't the resistance know who Oli's bonds were? Penelope was in North's inner circle! She would have known who North's bond was, so why didn't the resistance? None of this makes any sense. The only reason the resistance didn't kill Oli during those two years she was held captive is because they thought she was alone and her bonds weren't cycled.
7) If "the Eternal's" dark bonds were always in the Draven line, and if they were always brothers, and they were always death-dealers...HOW/WHY didn't the resistance know they were currently alive and the bonds of Oli? It's so ridiculous, I can't even...I just can't. Death dealers are super duper rare, like as rare as soul-renders...
I could literally go on and on and on with unanswered questions and glaring plotholes.
I was disappointed because book 6 was boring, anticlimactic, and unfinished. At some point, many of these questions were brought up and asked in J. Bree's FB group. If she had paid any attention at all, she would have at least been aware that these questions were being asked.
This book doesn't deserve a whole 3 stars. 2.5 stars would probably be more appropriate.

2⭐️ There’s no way you finish a 6 books series so badly J. Bree !
I had so much difficulties to get through this one. I swear this series could be shorted by two books. Yes, two, maybe even three. It’s just « let’s go fight the resistance » « omg something happened we need to go back to the sanctuary! » over and over and over again 😤🙄
Even the epilogue was disappointing, what the heck ?
Truly I really have not much to say right here right now, everything was repetitive and truly it was painful going through this book. When you’re like « when does it end for fuck’s sake? » then I can’t actually rate it more than 2 stars.
Anyways. Read the first three books of this series. And then forget about the other three! So much potential gone to waste..
This is going to be one messy review because I am a mess. And what’s not to love about a little ✨cOnSistEnCy✨ right? Also I’m drinking wine right now so please bear with me if there’s any typos because I’m crying.
This was such an incredible series, and Unbroken Bonds, the final instalment was the perfect wrap-up. I could not have asked for a better ending.
Any remaining questions from Tragic Bonds were answered in this book ever so subtly, organically almost, and fitting for the story and it was so well done—the last piece of puzzle as we finally see the bigger picture. I absolutely loved it.
J’s detailed action scenes make you feel as if you’re right there on the Wastelands alongside our beloved characters and I can’t speak highly enough of it all. The way her writing draws you in and simply holds you hostage until the very end is a talent I don’t come across often.
Anyways—her depiction of these honorable and intriguing characters set in this fantastical and corrupted world against the elitist Resistance is simply phenomenal and it’s a series that I will forever recommend as it will stay with me forever. Thank you for giving me (yes—“us” but sometimes I’m an egocentric asshole) Oli and her story and her Bonded. I don’t think I’ve ever been so invested in a series since The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner. And I think that’s the strength of this series. The Bonds that Tie is the Perfect™️ combination of nostalgic dystopia and the chosen trope combined with adult dark romantic preferences. So again—will forever recommend.
