UPDATE 18th Jan 2013 ~ I have just found out there are now 6 books planned for this series... WooHoo! I get to camp out on Ellery Mountain for a while to come... just to keep them company of course!!

From the start of this book, I fell in love with our two MC’s... Max a Fireman with a horny hose and Finn a Cop with a wicked weapon!...

tumblr_m4tkqi2Aw11qgktnqo1_500

Max was a fulltime Fireman in the City, but when his sexuality becomes an issue and not only threatens his own life but the lives of others, he packs up and moves to the sleepy Town of Ellery. On his second day in Town and as a volunteer, he is called to a fire at the Precinct and all his past experience is called upon to save the Cop trapped inside.

Max is built, as in “Built” Tall, blond with blue eyes… and unbeknown to Max he is also Finn’s perfect Fantasy Lover! so when Finn comes on to him in his delirium after being rescued, Max looks into those green eyes and the sparks which arc between them are only the beginnings of the fire that would eventually rage!

Finn is care free and fun loving with a wicked sense of humour, his inner monologue had me grinning from ear to ear, especially when he was around Max and his confidence evaded him leaving him like a nervous teenager and all tongue tied… whilst other parts of his anatomy were definitely untied and rising to the occasion! Max on the other hand is more serious and protective of Finn, wanting nothing more than to wrap him in his arms and keep him safe, something he had to do on more than one occasion!

Neither men had any experience of relationships to speak of, both more used to quick fucks and fumbles, but when these two hotties lusting for each other eventually get together it was HOT, total. unbridled. passion… the intensity of which was something that was new to both of them and they wanted more! Holy Hell… I was feeling the flames coming from these two, I can tell you!

There is the whole insta-love going on, but for me, being a big softy… it worked! and it’s a novella with not only a romance, but along side we also have the investigation into the arson attack on the precinct, which was only the first of many life threatening incidents to hit the Town of Ellery, with Max… the hero on hand to rescue our wayward Cop each time, needless to say, poor Finn spends most of the novella in Hospital with one injury or another with Max at his bedside! I did feel Finn got a little pouty at the end, however I attributed that to his age, but Max soon sorted him out so it was all good!!

The romance and the investigation I felt were perfectly woven together and RJ Scott had me engrossed and unable to put the book down until it was finished… and how happy was I when I checked out her website to find out this is the first in a series of 5 books set in the town of Ellery. The series is set up perfectly in this first book and I for one will be looking forward to the others, It is based around a group of high school friends, all gay who get together on a Friday night and just drink beers, chat and chill. In this book we get an insight into the characters Daniel and Kiernan and get the background behind the meetings… and Oh. My. God... the next book The Teacher and the Soldier is about Daniel, *swoon* I am already in love with this tall dark and handsome soldier who is a bad boy, who also rides a motorbike... and if it turns out he has piercing's and tattoos… I am a gonner!!

So read this book if you like sexy Cops and Fireman with some smokin hot Lovin!

So...the last book I read before The Fireman and the Cop was crappy. Boo.

Put me in a crap mood. Double boo.

So I had to call a television intervention and retry reading at a later time to get back into the swing of things.

TV? No problem because Fall US primetime TV score.

Reading? I started and stalled. I rather let the book speak to me, connect with the characters, wait for the hook that I love.

So five books in (I will get back to those books, I swear), of starting and stalling...the sixth one hooked me in. Yay.

Is it a masterpiece? No. LOL

The story has minor issues but I liked the ideas. I liked the characters. I like the potential for the series. It was packed with some angst, former abuse, sexy firemen, ex-soldiers and a cop who got hurt...a lot. Sexy, some suspense and easy to read.

Did I enjoy? Yep.

Out of my book funk? Yep.

Following more from the series? Yep!

What's my rating? 3.75 stars

Hooray for the power of books! (I'm probably preaching to the choir, huh?)

I thought I would be too busy to read this book today, official release day, but it is only 79 pages, so I read it on my lunch break. My perfect storm of genres, Cops and firefighters... Hot damn!

I thoroughly enjoyed Max, newly appointed volunteer firefighter in Ellery, TN and Finn, a young police officer. Max rescues Finn, sparks literally flying, and they face some angst, lust, drama and romance. *sigh*

R.J. Scott uses this book to set the stage for her next two books in the Ellery Mountain Series, The Teacher and the Soldier and The Handyman and The Actor without overwhelming us with names and relationships and pages and pages of details. Short and sweet and back to Max and Finn. Just as it should be.

Recommended for all fans of R.J. Scott's series stories and lovers of short and sweet, hot M/M men-in-uniform dealing with a bit of angst and drama and lust and a HEA.

Okay... yeah. Not exactly a spectacular start to a series.

Firefighter Max rescues cop Finn from a burning building. They fall in love. There's some back and forth, someone trying to kill Finn, and then a happy ending.

I read this to satisfy my firefighter cravings, but didn't really feel it, sadly.

It wasn't bad, but it was not really noteworthy, either.

This first story in the Ellery Mountain series follows firefighter Max and cop Finn as they meet under extenuating circumstances and fall instantly into lust with one another.

There isn’t much to the plot, with a small mystery surrounding the identity and motives of the firebug that began the fire that introduces Max and Finn. The reveal of which was a bit ridiculous and fairly unrealistic, but seeing as the whole story had a fast paced feel, with limited character or plot development, I basically focused on the sweetness of the characters and their blossoming romance, and the potential for further stories within the series.

This book may be 4 years old, but I actually think I’ve read it too soon. You see, the revised/newly edited edition is coming out in May (2017) and I didn’t know about this re-release until I was more than halfway through reading. I now wish I’d waited because, yes, the older version I just read was rife with grammatical errors, with words missing, characters names being interchanged willy nilly, and even the odd use of British spelling in a book that is set in rural Tennessee. Generally, I can brush these niggles aside, but unfortunately it did detract from my overall enjoyment.

And can I just ask who the new (blue) cover models are meant to be? Sure, they are a damn good step up from the original creepsters on the yellowish cover, but if Max is the blonde (which he must be), then why is Finn the older gentlemen on the left? Finn is meant to be all young, slender and pretty, with green eyes that shine for miles, but this guy is clearly older and all rugged. It’s just off.

Overall, despite my minor issues, this was a sweet story, featuring a cast of likeable characters. I look forward to reading more about the Ellery Mountain men at a later date.

This book is so weird.

First, it reads like a rough first draft, with all the awkward sentence constructions, the typos, and grammar/syntax mistakes.

Second, it uses British English spelling while it is set in Ellery Mountain, Tennessee.

Third, it seems like it aspires to be something between a standard whodunit and a romantic suspense novel but it falls so flat it's embarrassing.

Eh. At least it is short.

Have to say I'm a teeny weeny bit disappointed with this book. I know RJ only does short books, but I didn't feel that the plot was 'fleshed out' enough. I knew who the baddie was going to be fairly early on as no new characters were introduced to throw the reader off, and you just knew that it was only going to be a matter of time before he succeeded in getting Finn on his own.

RJ, I hope this doesn't upset you too much, but it's something I feel I have to say. I've noticed that you seem to be bringing a lot of books out at the moment, and can't help but think that this is not a good thing. I can only hope that what happened to Sherrilyn Kenyon (in my eyes at least) doesn't happen to you. I stopped buying SK's books quite quickly 'cos we seemed to have a new one every other week and the ones that did come out were very weak plot-wise. That can't be good for the reader (or the author really). Just going through the motions of writing a book means that the reader is missing out on just how good the book could have been had the author taken more time with it, and not caved in to pressure from the publisher!
I would much rather have to wait for a book e.g. from Pamela Clare or TJ Klune who take months, than read a new one every few weeks.

So, I'll reserve judgment on this series until the next one comes out, but I need it to be a little bit better than this one.

**** New in town, firefighter Max, 31, a big, blue-eyed blonde and muscled hottie, saves a cop, Finn, 25, from the station house fire. Delirious Finn asks Max, why aren't there any gay firemen. What? Max decides to follow up at the hospital to make sure Finn knows he's gay, and to talk and get to know him.
There's a firebug loose, brakes are cut, and a murder, before we figure out who did it all. Yikes !

Meanwhile Finn and Max slowly get closer. The desire is there instantly, but they move slowly. Poor Finn needs rescuing a few times and thinks he's not worthy of Max. Max is in it for the long haul. There are fun side characters, co-workers, and lots happening in this exciting story.
This series is full of very different men, interesting tales and lots of sexy times.
Great writing, and each book can stand alone. I've read them out of order, and have been happy.
ENJOY !

This was a quick read with no real surprises. It had the hot alpha fireman, the hot cop, hot friends (who get their own books too - which I will be reading - for the hotness) and smexy times. The mystery is definitely backseat to the quick build of the relationship from lust to love.

It's one of those books you want to read after reading something that is draining, really deep or over the top angsty. It will put you back in your happy place that's all comfy and familiar.

Really cute story that just felt good from beginning to end. Finn is one little hottie of a cop, and Max is a hot studly fireman who saves him and saves him and saves him again. Poor Finn takes quite a beating in this story. I wish it was a bit longer containing more details about their budding relationship.

P.S. I think Kieran and Daniel need their own stories. :)

What's not to like about a story featuring a cop and a fireman?
Max has recently moved to the small town where Finn (and his gorgeous friends who will appear in future books in the series) grew up. The story starts with Max rescuing Finn from a burning building with an immediate connection forming between the two men. What follows is a story of Max and Finn building their relationship while the arsonist continues to be at large.
Hot men, hot sex, lives at risk, emotions being denied.....HEA.

This story is an ordinary light romance between Finn a cop and Max a new fireman in the town. In overall I liked the both MC's, but in my opinion everything happens to fast. The storyline is to fast paced and to undeveloped. I'm sure it could be better.

Reviewed on Hearts On Fire... http://heartsonfirereviews.com/

Max Harrison is the new man on the fire department in the small town of Ellery. There is a fire at the police headquarters and Max rushes into the collapsing building to save a man trapped inside. He just gets the man out when the man starts hitting on him. Officer Finn Ryan is that man and he is the typical stubborn Irishman. While looking into the cause of the fire, he comes across evidence of arson. A cut brake line on Finn's truck convinces Max that someone is out to get Finn but Finn wants a lover not a babysitter. I thought the idea of a fireman and a cop together was going to be hot but Max and Finn spent more time misunderstanding each other than anything else. Neither man had ever been in a real relationship and seemed to dance around the other in between attacks on Finn. The story read well and easily but lacked the verve that is present in most of Ms Scott's books. The killer was a complete surprise to me as he came out of nowhere. The trademark HEA was there but the killer just did not work for me. Perhaps the fact that this book was the first in a series, more time had to be invested in developing Ellery but this just did not feel like an RJ Scott book.

Great book, I loved Max and Finn. Some of the lines were really nicely added and together the couple had great chemistry. If it had been a bit longer I would have given it 5 stars. Doesn't mean I didn't really enjoy it though. I loved the fact we got to meet some of the future MC's too. Kieran and Daniel were great in this.

This is a nice story. Finn is a cop who is rescued from a burning building by the new volunteer firefighter in town, Max. Finn, in his injured state, unknowingly hits on Max within seconds of being rescued. They get to know each other (somewhat) while Finn is in the hospital and then they quickly begin a relationship. The only problem.... someone is trying to kill Finn and Max has to rescue him from these attempts several times before the person is caught.

I enjoyed this. I'm a huge fan of this author so I was happy to see a new series. My only problem is that I felt that everything moved really, really fast... perhaps too fast. Understandable considering the length of the story. I immediately liked Max and Finn and I also enjoyed reading about the secondary characters and the little bit of drama in regards to Finn. I look forward to reading the second in the series.

The book seemed to take on too much for such a short story and was unable to focus enough on any one aspect. While I liked the characters, I wasn't invested in the insta-love between the two MC's. I could understand the lust, but they didn't spend enough time together for me to actually get a feel for why they were so taken with each other after such a short amount of time, much of it with one character in the hospital or injured. The story had potential but felt too rushed and was full of sloppy errors that also detracted from the story.

I've read some of the author's other work and enjoyed it. I have one of her longer books waiting on the Kindle and will read it, but not sure if I will continue with this series.

Well this was a dud. Nothing made sense: the characters were inconsistent and their connection insta/ shallow. The investigation was basically non-existent, no sense of stakes. Yes the crimes kept pilling up but the solution pops up when the criminal just shows themselves and explains everything. It was impossible to guess. The ending was rushed, there was a last minute conflict between the MCs that could have been interesting but wasn't because it came out of nowhere and was solved in a very cheesy and unearned way. I read this for challenge so no expectations but was still disappointed. This author has done better for sure.

The first part was sort of nice but like a lot of other plots in m/m romances I've read and I kept thinking "RJ, you can do better than this" but the book lost me completely when but I probably will read the rest of the books in the series nevertheless, hoping the rest will be more original.

Men in uniform and a crazy ex, what more do you want people?!

It's short, which is why there's not more stars, but it's sexy and manages to build up quite an intense relationship through shared rescue experiences and a deranged threat to small town life

First in a new series focussing on this little Tennessee town and it looks like they're going to be nice quick and easy reads.

These were terrific characters in need of a good plot. I liked Max and Finn quite a lot but the story was much too short to really flesh out the characters or, indeed, their romance. They both fall too easily, too soon. I like RJ's writing but it's like we're just getting the tip of the iceberg with her. This would have been a really good "novel". I wanted more of Max's back story, more interaction between all the characters, including the supporting cast; more of Finn's history and his friends'... I'd like the author to paint a backdrop for their story because right now I don't know anything about Ellery - or very little anyway. This effort felt rushed to me and that's too bad because I think they have good story to tell. Just not this flimsy effort.

Story got lots of things going on

Once upon a time, in tiny town where bears sightings are daily occurrences, a Fireman saves a Cop life from a burning building .

The heroes Max and Finn , faced a variety obstacles before finding their HFN .

A lunatic arsonist , few murder attempts, never able to finish a single date , inexplicable shopping trips to grocery store and bad Chinese take out.

Just like this review , the plotline and progression of this book it's all over the place.

It was an okay story.

Ugh! This was not for me. Guys meet and fall in lust with each other. There are several time jumps in which we are told they get to know each other and fall for each other. But we don't see WHY they fall for each other side from knowing they like each other's "hose or weapon".

Second and last book I read by this author. Her story telling style is just not for me.
