Pinch of Magic #1

The Anywhere Hotel

Rate this book
What would you give up for the chance to go anywhere in the world, anytime you wanted?

When Ava Marley stumbles upon the mysterious Atlas Hotel on a remote beach in Zanzibar, she's already on the run. Her estranged father wants her to join the family's global coffee-shop empire, but she would rather scrub toilets than follow in his footsteps. So when innkeeper Bruno di Mare offers free lodging for honest labour, it doesn't take Ava long to agree.

Only the Atlas is no ordinary hotel - it's a portal to the world. In a matter of seconds, Bruno's guests can travel the entire globe as long as they return within twenty-four hours. Croissants for breakfast in Paris, lunch with elephants in the Okavango Delta, a sunset cruise on the Amazon, finished off with a rooftop dinner in Cappadocia - the Atlas makes it all happen in a day, and Ava gets sucked in like a drop of water into sand.

But entry comes at a bitter price - one the innkeeper reveals only after she has checked in. And now Ava, like all other guests, must make a choice: Will she leave her mark on the world or run away forever?

This book was gifted to me as an early copy and I couldn’t be happier about that.

I’ve read “The Anywhere Hotel” in one sitting on my way from Germany to Spain and couldn’t put it down. Even when my boyfriend, who was driving, tried to talk to me, I was like ‘Nope, I can’t, I gotta find out what happens next’. He smiled and kept driving while I fell more and more in love with Ava and her story – and everyone who accompanied her on her journey (especially Captain though).

Ava not only takes us on a whirlwind journey to the most exciting places in the world, but also on a journey to herself. When she finds “The Anywhere Hotel” she’s unsure what she wants to do with her life, so when Bruno, the innkeeper, offers her free lodging and only wants her to help out at the hotel a bit, it doesn't take Ava long to agree. Shortly after she enters the hotel she finds out that “The Atlas” how Bruno and all his guests call it, isn’t just a hotel. She realized that it’s a place that takes you to anywhere in the world. All you have to do is take one of the thousands objects, that are in the hotel, toss it and catch it again. It doesn’t take her long to realize that in this way she can travel the whole globe without even paying a cent. But there are rules she must follow. She can only stay 24 hours in one place and has to come back just in time. If not she will be stranded. But there’s more. Being a guest of the “Atlas” comes at a bitter price – one the innkeeper reveals only a couple of days after Ava has checked in. And then it’s already too late. Now Ava must make up her mind, if she wants to leave again or if she wants to stay and never look back.

I swear, this is one of the best books I’ve read this year so far. I also added it to the list of my “all time favorite books” because how I could I not? It doesn’t happen very often that I keep thinking about the story and the characters days and even weeks after I’ve finished the book. This is a sign that a book has really touched my heart and got me thinking about a whole lot of things, especially about life. I’ve read the book like three weeks ago and I still think about it and every once in a while there are scenes from the story that just pop up in my mind and make me want to read the book all over again. I read the ebook and I can’t wait to hold the physical copy in my hands. I will most definitely read it again as soon as it arrives.

Despite the fast-paced storyline, the book screams coziness. It has an absolute feel-good factor and is probably perfect to be read at home on the couch, with a cozy blanket and a nice hot cup of tea or coffee. The story is so unique and you can really feel how much work, research and heart is put in between all the lines. There is so much in the book that is thought provoking. While reading you always ask yourself “What would I do in this situation? How would I decide?” It’s just like the story somehow got stuck in my head (meant in a positive way).

The characters are also so incredibly well written. They feel like family; like old friends you haven't seen in a while. I also love that it’s not just a random love story where the girl meets a guy that changes her life. This book is a declaration of love to life and the world and a little bit to oneself. At some point I even had tears in my eyes, because I was so moved.

And then there are those plot twists. I love it when a book surprises me and things happen that I didn't expect. And that is absolutely the case here. I was surprised and intrigued, shocked, angry and moved. I couldn't stop reading! I just couldn’t.

Also, there’s the cutest dog ever in this book and it made my heart jump with joy.

And by the way, how amazing would it be, if a hotel like this would actually exist?

I could go on raving like this forever. This book is so so good and I cannot wait to read more books from the author.

PS: How gorgeous is the cover even? I cannot wait for the physical copy.

A Journey of Discovery

*I was thrilled to receive an advance reader copy. That did not influence my opinion.*

The Anywhere Hotel is a perfect getaway. Or is it not?

Following the characters, foremost the protagonist Ava, their journey and especially their development I found myself popping up on many different pages of the world with them. To me this book is all about atmosphere: of the hotel and between the characters.
With each new chapter you dive in deeper, get drawn in and find yourself questioning "what happens if...".
I read the book while traveling myself and it was a great travel companion. Coziness, adventure, nature - best mix. Even though it feels like a light read there are also serious topics: the importance of choices and their consequences.
Loved that an elephant made it on this beautiful cover.

To any fellow travel-loving person I encourage you to pick this one up wherever in the world you are.

After being privileged to receive an advanced reader copy, (a huge thank you to Gisele Stein at this point) I couldn't wait to get started with this book as I have always adored everything the author has created. And what can I say - the places mentioned in the book were described with such attention to detail and authenticity that it really took me on every journey.
The protagonist was fatefully confronted with deep questions, with decisions between taking on responsibility and fulfilling expectations or discovering new paths and just living life. How could one not identify with that? And when the story comes to a head: Does she want to take on her issues or run away forever? The book takes the reader with it, with a lot of unexpected twists and surprising depth in what seemed to be at first a great very light, feel-good book. must-read for those with wanderlust who want to read a book with meaning & will definitely add some places on your travel bucket list!

What a gem of a book! It took me a bit to dive into the story, as the beginning felt a little bit rushed for me but the writing is so beautiful, the characters are interesting and the story develops beautifully. Can’t wait to read the next one!

I want to give this 2.5 stars, as just 2 feels a little harsh… It’s an average story with average characters, and was a bit of a push to get through. Save yourself the time and skip this one!

Loved this book!
After reading some rather mediocre stuff recently, this was like a breath of fresh air.
Its original, well written and colourful.
Makes you think about your own life as well, never a bad thing.
Didn’t want it to end.

Very interesting concept for a story. Strong characters, good examples of people pulling together to help each other out, and all sprinkled with a generous helping of mystery and magic.

Adored all of the author‘s previous books and was really excited for her first fiction novel, but I’m a little disappointed. The story did not soak me completely in, I found the characters shallow and the storyline was missing suspense. Overall a great idea with the hotel and the overall message is really nice. Just the execution, the writing, the characters etc. needed for me personally a bit to become a novel I can’t put down.

*Thank you for the advanced reader's copy of this novel!*

I've been following various projects of Gisele Stein for many years now and have always been keen on any snippets of writing I came across from her. So you can imagine my excitement when she announced the release of her first novel! The only scepticism I had concerned the elements of magical realism in this story (something I rarely, if ever, reach for when choosing books to read). With curiosity and some anticipation, I opened the first page.. and felt instantly at home in this story, all doubts vanishing rapidly.

In "The Anywhere Hotel", we follow 26-year-old protagonist Ava Marley, aimlessly working as a barista in London, when her father, owning a huge coffee franchise, offers her to run the company alongside him. Ava, not keen on having her path decided for her and feeling pressured, escapes for a while.. and her adventure begins.

I LOVED the concept of this hotel Ava stumbles upon. What an idea. I must admit that I did not expect the depth this story would take, considering it being (or starting out as) more of a cosy, heart-warming, "light" read. It was not only fun getting to know Ava Marley in the course of this story, but other residents of this magic hotel with their backstories, too. I found myself unable to put down this book and thinking about it even when I wasn't reading.

"The Anywhere Hotel" is a story about running away, about losing and finding yourself, the courage to face your fears, friendship, belonging, pursuing your dreams, making an impact, the beauty (but sometimes also loneliness) of travel and so much more. It's a book for anybody in need of a dose of escapism, of a gripping adventure that will make you root for the characters (that end up feeling like friends) and leave you with a full heart but also slightly nostalgic.

First of all: I’m very grateful that I received an advance reader copy of this book.
Thank you Gisele for sharing your wonderful piece of creativity with the world. I enjoyed the reading experience so so much.

Though I’m not sure if I would call it an escapist read. Yes, it‘s entertaining and enchanting in a beautiful way and yes, you‘ll be taken into another world. But for me it was a book that shows you why you CANNOT just escape your life. Not by reading a story and not even if you’re staying at the Anywhere Hotel. That sounds like bad news but I mean it in a very positive way. Because at the same time, I was remembered that true freedom comes from fully being here exactly where we are, not wishing to be somewhere else. That it is a blessing that we are able to make a (positive) difference in the world, however small it may be. While reading, it was amazing to let my mind wander around the question „Where would I go? What would I do?“. However, as fun as visiting places all over the world is, in the end running away doesn’t make us any happier! And when we completely surrender to that, we can live our lives to the fullest in the here and now.

That was the main reminder for me but the story is so complex that you can read it in different ways with various „messages“. Or you try your best and read it to escape your life ;) But don’t get lost in the careful little details that make the book so complete.
Long story short: Just read it. It’s worth it.

I got lucky and received an advanced reader copy of this absolutely amazing book. I was curious since this was Gisele Steins first novel. Also I got caught by the pinch of magic. I like fantasy book, so I went for it and I have to admit, it is one of my favourite books. It is a fantasy book that combines fantasy and the real world, nothing completely new, but with a very interesting concept. The book is one of the “good reads”, that you can’t set down and that makes you feel welcome.
I adored the details about the characters, the tiny little bit extra, that made them come to life. You read this book and you can’t not care about them, especially Captain. Also I really welcomed a book that is a fantasy book but doesn’t have a love story in the first place.
Without telling you too much, I can say “The Anywhere Hotel” has plot twists that are unexpected and keep up the suspense, so it never gets boring. The author has a special humour depending on her own background which she uses in the book. I loved it a lot. But there is also her other side, the deep caring one, which she integrated through the background stories of the side characters. She uses them to get you to think about different people in different situations form numerous cultures. Some real issues become a topic without taking over the main story.
“The Anywhere Hotel” is a deep book, but easy to read. I guess, it is my favourite book in 2023! Have fun reading it, it is worth it.

What a wonderful book to read. I received a copy as being part of Gisele's advanced reader team to read it before the actual release. And I must say, I was flashed and really taken. As an intrepid traveller myself the story touched my nomads heart deeply.
At the beginning I had a little difficulty getting into the story. I missed a few stations until the first hours in the hotel. But I think that was intentional, I was more confused than excited.
In the middle of the book I could hardly put it down, I found it so exciting. It became a page-turner for me. Accordingly, I quickly flew through the end of the book and then had to realise that I was still missing a few clues, or that I might have missed them due to the fast, tense reading.
So I read the last chapters twice to discover a rounded and, above all, very instructive story for myself. Also, in the last part, all the inconsistencies of the beginning then cleared up and created an "oh that's why" effect. In this respect it created a skilful arc of tension. And the nice thing about the story is that you can really take something from it for your own life. And that's even without the "pinch of magic".
Thanks so much, Gisele, for the good read.

The anywhere hotel is a relatively good book with a unique storyline and strong themes. The dialogue feels natural, the plot is intriguing, and the characters are well-developed.

Some passages were beautifully written, and the prose remained solid throughout the book. That said, there were moments where certain sentences felt a bit like AI-generated text, not that I’m accusing the author of anything! It could’ve just been the structure of some sentences or the word choices that gave me that impression.

I’m giving it 3 stars. While it started off strong and hooked me right away, I found myself struggling not to skim during the middle and toward the end. There were definitely strong moments that kept me wanting to find out what happened next, but somewhere along the way, it felt like the story lost its spark. It seemed to juggle too many themes, and while I thought I’d enjoy the magical realism, I guess it’s just not for me.

There were also a few aspects that didn’t align with my Christian values, but that’s a completely personal note and doesn’t reflect the quality of the novel itself.

Lastly, I had a hard time connecting with Ava as a character. Maybe I’m just jealous that she's even hesitating about turning down a multi-million-dollar offer. 🤣

I was blessed with an advanced reader copy of „The Anywhere Hotel“. After the first chapter it already became one of these books you cannot put down again!

„Checking in into „The Anywhere Hotel“ feels like checking into my own heart space!
I find myself on a journey into the unknown. The author invites us to get lost in the illusion of time and space, traveling far away and and come back home again to this place that exists within us wherever we go. „The Anywhere Hotel“ is a reminder about the beauty of our true human nature. With all the light and dark. The story triggers our thinking in what we choose as compass in our daily life as well as in reflections about faith in something bigger than us. During your trip the author misses no chance to touch your senses with words, that tickle your imagination. I close the book with a smile on my face and a sparkle in my heart. If I ever feel lost again, I know where to go.
It’s the book for the hammock, for the train, for grey afternoons and the perfect gift for friends.“

I was lucky to receive an Advanced Reader copy of this book and once I started reading The Anywhere Hotel, I couldn‘t stop! I was immediately drawn into the story and couldn‘t wait to find out how Ava‘s story unfolds. I really enjoyed travelling to so many different places in one book - yet not rushing, but getting a feel of each place that reminded me so much of why I've always loved slowly unravelling the unknown.

Like in the book, travelling and leaving the known world behind sometimes comes at a prize - not knowing where you belong anymore or questioning your life at home - and these questions are beautifully dealt with in the face of the possibility of escaping it all.

I enjoyed getting to know the other guests of the Atlas Hotel, who all have their own difficult pasts and choices to make, forming a heartwarming sense of community.
I loved this magical touch, combined with the love of travel and the importance of true connections that stay with you for a lifetime. Once you step foot in this magical place (book), it's hard to leave!

I was lucky enough to receive an Advance Reader Copy of this novel and it took me only a couple of days to read it - once I started I couldn't put it down.
The story begins in one of my favourite cities, London, and comprises two things that I enjoy a lot: travelling the world and coffee!
The idea behind it is fantastic. Who hasn't wished for a quick way to travel from A to B sometimes? (Don't worry if you are not too much into fantasy novels, you will still enjoy it because it is totally different from what you would expect).
However nothing in life is for free. So what are you prepared to sacrifice if in return you were able to get to all the places you have always been longing to discover, in just a glimpse?
Is it really that easy (and worth it) to leave all your worries behind and start again from scratch?
I literally laughed and cried with Ava, the protagonist.
This novel makes you dream away but also reflect at the same time, I really enjoyed this combination of ease and profoundness. Highest recommendation!

I absolutely loved this book! Right from the very first moment, it took me on a journey. Not just to the most beautiful and exciting places of our wonderful world, but also into the magical world Gisele created with Ava‘s story. Oh, and in the end it turned out to be a journey to myself, too. Not many books give you a beautiful story, lots of knowledge and provoke such deep thoughts all at once.

There is so much I love about this book, where do I start? With the beautifully drafted and diverse main characters? With the perfect story world, including travels, coffee, the cutest dog ever and just the right tiny bit of magic? Or maybe with Gisele Stein‘s Talent to find exactly the right words to give you the feeling of standing right next to Ava on her adventure?

I‘ll let you decide, because I can’t! I loved averything about this book (which was gifted to me as an early copy) from cover to the very last page of travel wisdom.

All I say is: read it! It will be the best book you’ve read in a long while!

I loved the book. Every page of it. A must-read.

‘The Anywhere Hotel’ is a place where you want to stay forever. I loved reading the advanced reader copy of Gisele Steins first novel. I was super happy to get a spot in her team being able to be one of the first persons to read her book.

Every time I started reading ‘The Anywhere Hotel’, I was taken to another world. A world of freedom and a world where I could just be myself. Normally I’m the kind of person who needs some time to be able to relax and quiet the mind but every time I opened the door to the ‘Atlas’ I immediately immersed in another universe – a really beautiful one.
I do have some questions left for myself now that want to be answered. But I can totally live with that :)

Loved the book and would totally recommend it! If you already loved ‘The Midnight Library’ from Matt Haig you will be thrilled to read Gisele’s book. I’m really looking forward to more books from her 🤩

I'm very grateful to have received an advance reader copy of this book!
The blurb made me already very curious - because how often do we not think about just going to anywhere else in this world?!
I really much liked the main character Ava and could relate quite to her situation, as Giselle understands perfectly to describe her feelings and emotions.
When entering the so called "Atlas" Hotel, I had a clear picture in my mind how everything would look like.
Also the other characters found quickly in my heart as each of them seems to be like someone you want have in your live and everyone of them with their own story reminds us to have a look behind the "scenes" and don't take everything for granted.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this novel and "travel" to all the different places (from which I could learn a lot new things by the way!).
A book to travel away, to feel, to get cozy and to get new perspectives on life!

4,5 🌟

Gisele Stein had me at "armchair travel" and when I heard there'd also be coffee and a dog involved I was beyond excited and grateful to receive an advanced reader's copy. And what can I say - "The Anywhere Hotel" definitely delivered.

While it usually takes me around 70 pages to find my way into a book, I was empathizing with Ava straight from page 1. I loved everything about the concept and it's so well written. You can smell the croissants in Paris and feel the African ground under your bare feet.

The resolution might not be groundbreaking, but I still didn't see it coming either. It definitely was a heartwarming read that I'll think about long after finishing the last page.

This book is the perfect read when traveling and it's the perfect read when being at home, dreaming about traveling, while cozying up with a good book. Also, if you loved the Midnight Library, go and read this book!

I can't wait to read more of Gisele Stein!

If you're a person like me, who is occasionally overcome by wanderlust, nothing can cure this feeling unless you start to travel.
But sometimes there are different reasons why traveling isn't possible at the moment.
Don't worry! Gisele Stein created a book, for people like me, to feel better.
Take this book to your favourite cozy place, take a cup of a hot drink and start reading. You'll need time because you don't want to stop reading until the end.
The book creates an atmosphere which is full of life!
Soon enough you'll think of paradise and happy endings but like in real life there are unexpected twists and turns.
The characters Gisele Stein created are made to identify with und each has its own personality.
I've got the digital book as an early reader for free but this fact won't stop me to buy my own paper version.

Last but not least it's a magical story which takes you to a place called 'the anywhere hotel'. It is an exciting and thrilling adventure.

I received an early copy of this book, which does not influence my opinion.

I read the book in one day as I was not able to put it aside. Gisele Stein describes everything so vividly that my mind could create beautiful images of everything. It was like traveling in my mind and therefore ideal for the grey, rainy day I read it.
I loved the twists and turns of the storyline and all the lovingly drawn characters of the book.

Main character of the book is Ava who wants to get away from her estranged father and the family empire. She arrives at a mysterious hotel from where she can travel everywhere in the world in a matter of seconds - but that comes at a price.

It is a unique, beautiful storyline and I will read it again for sure. I am looking forward to more books to come from Gisele Stein.

So happy and greatful to haven been chosen as one of the Advanced Reader for this book!
Who can't relate to the feeling of beeing lost in your own life? Just wanting a way out and maybe just disappear for a while. Ava and her story play on my heart strings - torn inbetween rooting for her to make "responsible" life choices and just living life to the fullest. I even cried realizing that the blessing of beeing able to disappear might not be all it's propped up to be.
As a reader you immerse yourself into this world and you soak in the cultures, food and even the smell of the leaves in the rainforest through the pages.
Gisele has written a book that offers a way to transport yourself all over the world from the comfort of your living room... and that without having to throw souvenirs into the air ;)

The first novel of Gisele has strong characters and a captivating story. I could easily image myself within the story, discovering so many great places!
The places are all well described and I loved all the little details.
The book is very fluent to read, which makes it even harder to put it aside. The plot has some unexpected twists that I loved and brought a new level into the story.

While reading I was drawn into the world of "The Anywhere Hotel“ right away and journeyed to so many places, it was great! It is a great escapist book for all readers with wanderlust.

But be aware - you might drink a lot of coffee while reading and your travel bucket list will get longer :)
I got lucky and received an advance reader copy of this book and I also bought a copy now to support her! I am looking forward to the next books!

I was lucky to receive an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Anywhere Hotel.

Who would not want to end up in a beautiful hotel that enables you to travel anywhere in the world? I certainly would! The main character Ava is relatable and well depicted. She is running from choices and responsibilities in her own life. After arriving at this magical place her issues do not just disappear but she eventually has to face her past in order to figure out her future. Throughout the book she gets to know the difficult life stories of the other hotel guests. The book is filled with compassionate characters and friendships that also emphasize the inequality in our world. Don’t worry the story does not lack lies, deceit and plenty of twists and turns.

Enjoy the ride!

The book makes you dream away to all the places you already visited and those you would like to… be prepared for a roller coaster journey around the world with the main character Ava, former daughter of a coffee giant boss. Once she stepped into the Atlas hotel, she begins the Journey to herself with many lovley characters. What happens when you could switch your location by tossing a souvenir and pop out right where you bought it? It can be dangerous, wonderful, rainy or unexpected, but you can learn a lot by the encounters and do good with your apperance.

I love the emotionally observant writing style of Gisele Stein while she describes the characters in every readers heads with clear visual words.
This book is for your heart and soul, making the autumn days feeling excited.

I‘m very thankful for receiving an advanced reader copy of Gisele Stein.

Everyone who checks in is embarking on a special journey
Once in a while, most of us come across the feeling of wanting to run away from our own lives. But what would happen if you were given the opportunity? For all those, Gisele opens the doors of the Anywhere Hotel. What the guests make out of this magical hotel experience can be very different. And quickly the characters ask the same questions that you ask yourself in life: What remains when the joy of escapism ends? Where is my place in the world? With her book, Gisele Stein shows that no matter where we travel, it is always also a journey to ourselves. I received an advance reader copy of this book, without knowing what her first novel is about. When I saw the cover, I had to smile: Working in the tourism industry, I would love to offer such a hotel experience to our guests as well. 😊
