Perfect in Death is the first book of a bone-chilling Supernatural mystery series with lovable characters, dogs, and a touch of romance.
Reily Garrett is a writer, mother, and companion to three long coat German shepherds. When not working with her dogs, she’s sitting at her desk with her furkids by her side. Author of chilling suspense and snarky romance, her stories include romantic thrillers and paranormal romance, . Regardless of genre, each book delves into a dark and twisted imagination yet is tempered with romance and a touch of humor. Reviews by Kirkus Reviews, San Francisco Bay Review, and BestThrillers.com best describe her work: "This could be James Patterson, Lee Child, and Tess Gerritsen rolled into one, but the dark, twisted methods used by the serial killer could surprise even those readers…” - San Francisco Bay Review “…steamy, seductive police procedural…” - BestThrillers.com “…well-researched thriller that remains romantically genuine throughout.” - Kirkus Review
Prior experience in the Military Police, private investigations, and as an ICU nurse gives her fiction a real-world flavor.
Pace: The book does start slowly, but the author introduces the main characters and the reasons why they are in Hamchet. The storyline does pick up speed after the first couple of chapters and alternates between medium and fast for the pacing.
Trigger/Content Warning: There are trigger warnings in Perfect in Death. If any of these triggers you, I suggest not reading the book. They are:
Child Death (moderate and off page) Death (moderate and most are off-page) Drugs (minor) Gun Violence (moderate) Miscarriage (minor and off page) Occult (moderate to graphic) Adult/minor relationships (minor and off-page) Infidelity (minor and off page) Gambling Addiction (minor and off page) Alcoholism (minor and on page) Dead bodies (moderate to graphic and on page) Car accident resulting in death (moderate and on page) Series: Perfect in Death is the first book in the Hailey Arquette Murder Files series. Since this is the first book in the series, you jump right in and enjoy the book. A character from the last series is introduced in this book, and there are references to other characters from other series.
Sexual Content: Perfect in Death is a clean book. There are no sex or sexual situations in the book. There is some brief nudity. There are also mentions of sex, but the author doesn’t get into detail about it other than it was on a desk.
Language: There is moderate swearing in Perfect in Death.
Setting: Perfect in Death is set entirely in Hamchet, Texas.
Tropes: Bad Guys Who Can’t Aim, The Unlikable Victim, The Twist Ending, Missing Children, The Stalker
Age Range: I recommend Perfect in Death for anyone over 21. I went back and forth because of the lack of sexual content. But ultimately, I felt that the trigger and content warnings put the book into the over-21 age range.
Plot Synopsis (as spoiler-free as I can get):
Trenton Briner has returned to his hometown of Hamchet, Texas, after a prolonged absence. But he isn’t in Hamchet to visit. Instead, he is there to protect his sister, Leigh, and her best friend, Hailey, after a psychopath tells him that they were next to be harmed/killed. He was not expecting that he would be living with and trying to protect the spitfire that is his sister’s best friend.
Hailey Arquette grew up saturated in the occult. Using her love of photography, detective work, and her gifts, Hailey gets her PI license and opens an office in town. Her first case is investigating the disappearance of two girls, years apart. With Trenton in tow, Hailey starts to peel back the layers of mystery that surround the case and, in turn, unearths an enemy that is closer than she thinks. With the help of a spirit, a girl named Casper, who attends the school where the victims attended, and Trenton, Hailey races to solve this case. But can she solve it before she gets killed? And is she ready for the implications and deep-seated secrets that it could potentially unearth in her own family?
Main Characters
Trenton Briner: I liked Trenton, but he was so uptight. There were points in the book where I wished he loosened up a bit. But, considering that he was the straight man to Hailey (who did things unconventionally), I wasn’t surprised that he was written the way he was. He did grow on me. Everything he did in the book came from a place of love and a need to protect. I also liked that he knew that Hailey did what Hailey wanted, and he was there to back her up.
Hailey Arquette: I enjoyed reading her character. She was like a bulldog with a bone; she wouldn’t back down or let go until she solved her cases. I loved her relationship with Leigh (even if the whole twin-speak thing they had going on annoyed me). She enjoyed baiting Trenton (the scene where she came into the kitchen in a tank top and boy shorts with him there made me laugh). But she was serious about her cases, and I loved seeing her in action.
Secondary characters: I loved the secondary characters. A couple of my favorite characters from the last series appeared in this book. There were some that I wish weren’t in the book because of how they treated Hailey, others that I didn’t like, and others that I loved. Each character added depth to Trenton and Hailey’s characters and their storylines.
My review:
Perfect in Death was a great read, and I couldn’t get enough of it. The storylines were well-written, and the paranormal angle enthralled me.
There is one main storyline in Perfect in Death. It centers on Hailey, Trenton, and her cases. I found the storyline to be well-written. I liked that the author connected Hailey’s original case to the case involving her father. How that ended was a surprise for a few reasons. I wasn’t expecting the connection to be what it was, and I didn’t quite believe the author’s explanation.
The paranormal angle in Perfect in Death was wonderfully written. I enjoyed that Casper was in the book. I found the Vodou/occult angle of the book to be fascinating. Usually, Vodou practitioners are portrayed as evil people who want to control everyone. Instead, the author showed the opposite. I was a little surprised at who the spirit was to Hailey. Even with all the hints given, it still took me by surprise. I also can’t wait to see how Hailey will grow into her powers. They were powerful in this book, and she was coming into them. So, I am sure her powers will only grow during the series.
The mystery angle was also well-written. I liked how the author kept throwing distractions around and how she kept everything under wraps until the end. I thought I knew what was happening, and I thought I knew who the killer was. Well, I was wrong. I was utterly surprised at the reveal, mainly because of the twist.
The end of Perfect in Death was open-ended. The author did wrap up the cases that Hailey was working on. But everything else was left up in the air. That got me very excited to read book 2!!
Many thanks to Reily Garrett for allowing me to read and review Perfect in Death. All opinions stated in this review are mine.

Reily Garrett – Hailey Arquette Murder Files – Bk 1 – Perfect In Death – Reviewed 10/7/23 - Read 9/23/23
Hailey's life is turned upside down when she discovers a hidden world of magic and danger!
Hailey Arquette’s family has a history of the occult, but she never really practiced it. She inherited some abilities from her family but she has kept them hidden in her small town of Hamchet, TX. She had two passions: photography and detective work. She loved to capture the beauty of the world with her camera, and she also enjoyed solving mysteries as a Private Investigator. She uses the PI work to fund the photography until she can establish herself in the field. She was working on a case of a missing girl with the help of her best friend. But one night, something or someone saved her from a deadly attack, and she realized that her case was more complicated than she thought. And she knew that she had to find the answers now rather than later.
Trenton Briner had a good life in Hamchet, but he gave it up to join the FBI. He thought he could forget his past, but a new assignment brings him back to his hometown. He finds out that his sister and Hailey, his old flame, are in trouble. He can't stop thinking about Hailey, who still haunts his dreams. He tries to protect them, but he soon realizes that the case is more complicated than he thought. Someone is after them, and Trenton doesn't know who or why!
What did I like? I'm a big fan of Reily's books; this one was no exception. It had me hooked from the first page to the last. The story was full of action, mystery, and magic. I couldn't stop reading it. I also enjoyed the hidden hint of romance between Trent and Hailey; they had great chemistry. Trent's sister was hilarious and always teased him. This book was a blast to read.
What will you like? Wow, you gotta check out this series. It's got everything: mystery, murder, magic, and Reily's signature humor and snark. Trust me, you won't regret reading this series. Perfect In Death is out now!
Perfect In Death: A murder mystery with a ghostly twist Reily Garrett
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Sci-fi and fantasy, General Fiction (Adult)
I'm always stunned how authors put together a story, or series, so many characters and plots to weave together in a way that makes sense. I'd be useless ;-).
Hailey, loved her humour, loved her dedication to her job, but occasionally her decisions were a little too risky. There's a balance and she strays at times. Trenton was so opposite to her, though I did understand his protective streak, at times it was too much. I could see why Leigh and Hailey were annoyed and tried to evade him. The Vodou was an unusual addition, something that I enjoyed. Its good to have something different in the way of magics, and the history of this is rich and varied, so many ways to fit in a story. Hailey is determined to bring justice for the teen, but it puts her in dangers she could never have foreseen, It connects to her family on a personal level too, which came as a surprise to me. Trent's unsure if there's a connection to his case too, which has brought out threats to his family. You can see what I mean now about the different pieces that slowly come together. Then – Caspar from a previous series turns up, I loved that. She was a great character and will slot in perfectly with Leigh and Hailey. I hope she deters them from that annoying “twin speak” though.... This particular plot wraps up but with a few open ends that leave things set up for the next book. As usual in Reily's stories the star of the show is Gunther the Wolf/dog hybrid :-) Wish my dogs were that well behaved ( though to be fair one is only six months).
Stars: Five, a great start to a new series. More magic, mayhem and mischief to come.
~An exciting beginning ~First, I’ll state that I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review. ~Really enjoyed this new series. It has great potential for action and character development as the series progresses. Hailey, Trenton, and Leigh are the main characters…however, there are several other interesting side characters. Elizabeth, the receptionist; Colson, local police; Gunther, the wolf-dog; including several extended family members, both living and deceased…AND best of all; Casper, the sassy, smart aleck teenager with powers. ~While Casper is a returning character for the previous “Guardian” series, it is not necessary to read those books prior to enjoying this new series. ~Being a photographer myself, I found the references to and the details included about Hailey’s photographic profession to be a nice addition to the story line. ~The story started of slowly, but rapidly gained momentum. There were ample plot twists and turns. We were given a certain amount of individual character development as well as interaction between some of the main characters. Teasing between siblings and near siblings definitely added to the overall feel of this book. There was no actual romantic element in this story…however, there was plenty of inuendo, which leaves lots of room for future romances. ~Everything involved with this story kept me wanting to read to the finish. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in adventure and crime mystery, especially if you enjoy something with a little bit different twist. Be it female private investigators or paranormal occurrences.
‘H and C Investigations – and there is no C’ – Completely satisfying new series!
Author Reily Garrett initiates a new, and very successful, series of thrillers with PERFECT IN DEATH, introducing Hailey Arquette, a private investigator imbued with that extra gift of knowledge (and ancestry!) of the occult. Reily’s in depth career experiences in the Military Police, and ICU nurse, and a private investigator provide strong credibility to her plot management, and of course her innate, keen sense of humor simply makes this thriller even more entertaining!
Many of Reily’s gifts as a writer are present in the opening pages of this exceptional new novel as an FBI agent (Trenton Briner) arrives in the little Texas town of Hamchet to pursue the mystery of teenager’s death, a victim cleverly integrated with Trenton’s sister Leigh and her ‘twin’ Hailey (an interesting sidebar): Hailey is a private investigator with psychic powers – and a devoted wolf dog, Gunther! The mystery quite successfully blends small town charm, fascinating and well-defined characters, PI skills, touches of surreal and magic, and blushing romantic moods into a skillfully written novel.
Hailey Arquette is most assuredly a character to follow as Reily once again provides a scintillating mystery atmosphere (with moments of humor) to her compendium of highly successful novels. Recommended on many levels!
2 1/2 stars. A fairly standard urban fantasy. It turns out this is part of a bigger world that I wish had been indicated at the beginning. You do not need to read the other books to understand this, because I didn't and I did understand everything, no genius require. However, I felt that I was missing something for a while before I realized it was part of a bigger world. In addition, I think that Trenton, the FBI agent who came home after his last case where it was hinted his sister and childhood friend are in trouble, might have come off a little bit better. He's too bossy, particularly for 2 adult women, one who is a P.I. and the other is a police officer.
Now, his attitude is a little better understood as you get to know Hailey who while capable also does things that are stupid for anyone to do on their own. Yeah, I'm going to check out this isolated cabin in the swamp all by myself. I'm only going to sneak in to check it out and I won't get caught. I'm not doing anything dangerous when there is a killer on the loose and I think the person who did the murder is in that cabin. Nothing is going to happen there. After all, I'm just going to check it out. You can see where this leads.
There are some surprises and I actually really liked the secondary character Leigh and her friendship with Hailey.
Ancestry rooted in the occult sets Hailey Arquette apart in the small town of Hamchet. It also hampers her investigation of a teen’s death. As a private investigator, she must navigate the shadowy world where betrayal walks hand in hand with a smile.
A threat against family forces Agent Trenton Briner back to Texas where his childhood friend leads him into a mystery steeped in whispers of Vodou and magic. At each turn, he finds the raven-haired woman who haunts his dreams.
When an unknown entity saves Hailey’s life, she discovers she’s not the only one holding secrets and is willing to risk everything to learn the truth about the spirit haunting her.
This is a thrilling read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Trenton has been gone from Texas since Hailey hooked up with the low life Victor. But a threat to her and his sister, Leigh has him dropping everything and high tailing it back. Not that either of the women are all that appreciative of his over protective attitude.
What follows is an absolutely outstanding story of intrigue, bayou paranormal activity, murder and more. There is also plenty of rumbling attraction between Hailey and Trenton and Leigh and her police supervisor. Can't wait to see how these relationships pan out.
Hailey is an incredibly strong, intuitive person who is outspoken and forthright. Her partner in her PI business is an adorable wolf cross called Gunther. What starts as in Investigation into a missing girl spirals out of control involving the FBI and a potential spooky hidden organisation.
Amazing world building with a plethora of entertaining characters who I hope we'll get to know better in future books. This is the first book by this author and I was blown away. Already searching for the next in the series.

There was a lot in this book that could have been condensed into one chapter. For example, the author wants to convey that two of the main characters are tough broads and don't take any flak from anyone. This is in every chapter, taking two pages at least. I get it, they are strong women. Then there is the fact that these same characters are very close, they wear each other's clothes, finish each other's sentences, and even have their own language they call "twin speak". The author goes a bit over the top with this concept as well, especially the twin speak, going so far as to actually put in gibberish between the two to indicate a conversation no one else can follow. It's ridiculous, all she has to do is say they had a conversation in twin speak that no one else can understand. There is no need for three paragraphs of this nonsense. There are, however, several threads that could have been pulled instead that sounded interesting. I'm going to read the second book, because I already have it on hand. If it's more of the same, I most likely won't bother with the others in the series. Stay tuned.
Psychic P.I. Hailey Arquette, a descendent of LaBelle Fontaine, has been giving haunted tours, but will soon concentrate on her photography and investigations. Her best friend, Detective Leigh Briner, often supports her on her cases along with her dog, Gunther. When FBI Agent Trenton Briner is concerned for the safety of his sister and her friend, he returns home. Hailey has been called in to assist in the case of a missing teen who disappeared on her way home from a school function. Someone obviously doesn’t want Hailey involved as she is almost run off the road, shot at and continues receiving threats. Each time she is threatened, something seems to keep her from being injured, but she is not sure what. Is this case connected to a cold case of another missing girl? Will solving the case, lead her to more unknown facts about her past? A bit confusing (for me) at times, but altogether an interesting mystery. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I have read and enjoyed multiple books from Reily Garrett and always go in expecting another addictive read. While Perfect in Death starts a bit slower than some of the other books from the author, it certainly delivered as the story progressed.
While Perfect in Death works perfectly fine as a standalone, introducing the Hailey Arquette series, it is part of a bigger world that will enhance a person’s reading experience. That is not to say reading of the other books is required – far from it – but it is a bonus. Whatever approach is taken, Perfect in Death is another read from Reily Garrett that is sure to keep the reader engaged. There are plenty of elements interconnected throughout, ensuring the reader remains curious to see how everything comes together. Although there are some elements that result in headshaking, the overall engages and leaves you wanting more.
All in all, another enjoyable read from the author. Although not my favourite from the author, it is certainly well worth the read.
Reily Garrett always brings her stories to life with the littlest of details. She develops great characters and researches her locations and topics so well that even though she is writing fiction, the fiction blends so well with the non-fiction that you won't know what is real or what is made up. Or is it made up??? (Evil laugh) Perfect in Death weaves an intricate mystery that will have you guessing throughout the book not only who committed the gruesome crimes, but you will be working with a variety of investigators to try and solve the crimes. As if all of this isn't enough, there is a touch of the paranormal that leaves you wanting to know more, which leads me to my only complaint! And Ms. Garrett knows this is my pet peeve but she also knows I can't resist her books. This book doesn't end with a conclusion to the mystery. It's not a shocking, I can't breathe until the next book cliffhanger either but it will definitely have you wanting more! And the sooner the better!
Welcome to Texas where we meet Hailey who is a private investigator and Leigh who is a member of the local police force, oh and they are also best friends. Now coming from Pennsylvania FBI we have Trenton, Leigh’s brother who is back to protect the girls after a serial killer predicted their doom before she died, that catches you up a bit but you should also know the girls are looking into the disappearance of two girls from the local gifted students school who vanished five years apart from each other. While the girls look into the disappearances, Trenton will do everything in his power to keep them alive, sound good to you, well then I should tell you that this is just the beginning of their troubles and I promise that you don’t want to miss this book. I recommend you run out and get your copy now so that you too can enjoy all the adventure and mystery, you won’t regret it my friend.
Our heroine has powers which she uses in her investigations. Our hero has a history that he is trying to face. Perhaps together both of them can achieve their goals.
This is book one of the series, so all good there.
This is a romantic suspense story with some paranormal elements. The story is well written, and easy to read with well developed characters and an intriguing setting. There is a lot of action and intrigue in this one, so the story moves at a good pace. I also like both of our lead characters which is always a plus. It does get a bit creepy at times, but not overly much, so just a heads up. Overall, a fast moving story that draws you in at the beginning and doesn't let go. I continue to look forward to another book in the series.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.
The only good thing about the book was that it was free. In the first couple of chapters you have 3 adults bickering like 3 children. There is a receptionist with a do not care attitude. I found what I read to be really confusing. Did I miss something about Trenton's previous case? It sounded like it was another book before this one. There was no backstory about the missing teenager. At least there wasn't in the first 3 chapters. The author wrote as if the reader already knew things, such as all of the information about Trenton's previous case, the missing teenager, and the relationship of the characters as children? How did Victor get in the story, etc. As I said, no backstory.
I managed 3 chapters and skipped to the last two. Still confused. I will not be reading anymore by this author.
Psychic private investigator Hailey Arquette has joined her best friend Detective Leigh Briner to help investigate the case of a missing teen who never returned from a school function she attended. It seems that Hailey’s involvement is not wanted when attempts are made on her life. But there seems to be someone or something looking out for her since she seems to be protected from injury in each futile attempt to harm her. FBI Agent Trenton Briner decides to join them as he is getting worried about his sister and her friend. Will Hailey find out the mystery behind the spirit haunting her? Will they solve the missing teen case?
It is crazy to read a book for the dog and the physic mystery and learn something. The setting in this book with the bayou makes me think Lousiana maybe near NOLA but nope Texas. Add in elements of Vodou and you are definitely in NOLA. No this book made the work in Texas. My favorite character was the dog. My dog can sense when someone is a good person but nothing like Haileys dog. Trent read as uptight and Hailey as a free spirit. Together that worked for the author. The gifted school and the missing teen and the prognostician that sent Trent running combined to make a very good story. It may have been a scotch long and I hated the girls made up language but overall a good read.

What a brilliant start to Author Reily Garrett's newest series, the Hailey Arquette Murder Files. Absolutely loved these unique characters and the mysterious connect to the Spirit world, which can sometimes be a little eerie for me but not this one! Of course in true form of Reily's storytelling there is also that wonderful side kick of Hailey's trusted canine companion, which provides a sense of honesty and truth for me. A well devised plot filled with action, mystery, compassion, sleuthing, and a warming touch of romance. Definitely looking forward to seeing further direction with these characters in the future!.

Generally, an okay paranormal/ghost/mystery. A young female private eye, her best friend a police officer, and non-blooded brother an FBI agent slog through the muck a a teen girl's disappearance, a lost teen girl from 5 years previously, and another teen girl who has "strange" abilities. All this occurs in the bayou country of east Texas. I liked the overall idea of the book however could not move past the continual stubborn ignoring of intelligent procedures and ongoing too-stupid-to-live behavior of the main female character, Hailey (PI) It appears she is unwilling to learn impulse control and frequently created bigger problems for herself and law enforcement. Will not continue with this series.
From the description, I was expecting a sort of ghostly murder mystery.
I liked the main characters well enough, but this didn't feel like a ghost story to me, or at least not the kind that I was hoping for. I didn't get that satisfying spooky feeling that I hoped for while I was reading, so in that sense, I was a little bit disappointed. Hailey and Trenton were nice characters, and I finished the book, but the story didn't interest me enough to consider reading anymore books in the series.
Thank you to Booksprout and the author for a free copy to review.

When a threat is made against Agent Trenton's family he rushes back to Texas to protect his sister and her best friend. Hailey is the owner of H &C Investigations but there is no "C". She is a psychic PI with ancestry knowledge of the occult. Everytime danger approaches something keeps her from being injured. With the disappearance of a local girl Hailey and her best friend Leigh investigate along with her fierce protector Gunther. Leigh doesn't have as much freedom since she works for the sheriff. Mystery, suspense, banter, with a dose of paranormal that will keep you intrigued from beginning to end. I loved the banter between the three. Casper! I'm so excited! Can't wait for next installment Deceptive Silence!
Perfect in Death pulled me in from the first chapter and refused to let go. The tension, the danger, the twisted emotional stakes everything hit exactly where it needed to. I loved how the characters were flawed in all the right ways, fighting their demons while being dragged deeper into a story filled with secrets and unexpected turns. It had me guessing, hurting, and hoping all at once. By the end, I felt that tight ache in my chest the kind that only comes from a book that makes you care too much. Truly gripping, and honestly, I didn’t want it to end but I wish that instead of using AI or computer generate voices for the audiobook, I wish it was a narrator.
It took me a little while to get into this story - all the new characters and some I knew from previous stories in an unfamiliar location - but when I did I could not put it down. So much is going on and trying to guess who is the perpetrator only goes so far as there is more going on than just the murders. Intrigue upon intrigue and mystery about who is protecting Hailey, it is all fascinating and while some of the questions are answered many are not. The author gives the reader just enough to satisfy while keeping them hungry for the next book. A wonderful story.
Already a big fan of Reily Garrett's books (The Guardians my favourites) I looked forward to reading this as it had everything I needed - mystery, paranormal, big-ass dog.
Absolutely loved it. This book is perfect for anyone who loves murder mystery, paranormal or books with dogs as main characters.
I cannot wait for the next 2 books to be released and look forward to Hailey's developing her further powers as promised. I'm also looking forward to learning more about Casper too.
I enjoyed this ghostly mystery. I liked the relationship between Hailey and Trenton. She is a no nonsense person who feels she doesn't need a man's help, he is a straight laced FBI agent who is used to helping people. When he thinks his sister and her friend are in danger, he returns to town to find that Hailey has been threatened. The suspense kept me turning the pages and the unique storyline held my interest throughout. If you enjoy paranormal mystery stories Perfect in Death is a must read. This is a well written book with a cast of strong characters and an intriguing storyline. The author does a great job developing the story and pulled me in right from page one. I was glued to the pages with all of the danger and threats as the story unfolds. She moves the story fluidly with her descriptive scenes and delivers a terrific small town paranormal mystery. Loved and recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Picked this one up because it sounded interesting. For the most part, it was. The characters were each their own individual bunch of issues. Made for a dynamic read. Each character was multi-dimensional. The story line? Wow! Kind of all over the place, but not. Some things were nicely wrapped up and explained by the end of the book, but other things . . . Not so much. So many questions. Not a cliffhanger as we would think of them, but definitely a continuing series. Good enough that I will continue to read some more.
A psychic P I with a wolf- dog was enough to drag me in. But the reading was confusing and disjointed in places. Who was speaking, who was thinking about that? The editor could have helped some by adding more than one space to the beginning of the paragraph. I had to retrace my reading to make sense. The action was upbeat but often confusing. I liked the characters and their interface with each other. I'm not sure I'm interested enough to struggle through other books.
