Main Characters and Plot Overview
Ember begins this story as someone who has lived a privileged and sheltered life on Earth. The biggest concern in her world has been parties, fashion, and the comfort of knowing her parents would handle any problems that arose. That illusion is shattered when she is abruptly separated from her family and launched into an uncertain future. She awakens on an alien world confused, terrified, and completely unprepared for the dangers surrounding her.
ViN is one of the sons of DaR and has largely remained an enigma throughout the series. He prefers missions over relationships and firmly believes that a female has no place in his life. While searching the volcanic world of Targress Four, he unexpectedly encounters Ember during a horrifying ritual sacrifice. Their rescue and escape throw them together under extreme circumstances.
One of the more entertaining aspects of the story is that ViN can understand Ember, but she cannot understand him. Their communication barriers create equal amounts of tension, frustration, and humor. Forced to navigate lava-filled caverns, dangerous creatures, and relentless enemies, Ember and ViN gradually peel back the layers of each other’s personalities. The spoiled socialite and the gruff warrior slowly become something much more than either expected.
Highlights and Limitations
Ember’s character development was easily my favorite part of this book. At first, she is difficult to like. There is a world ending storm and most of the planet will die, but she is one of the lucky few that get a pod off the planet and she complains to the people on the launch pad about petty things like not being able to bring all the luggage she wanted to. She expects others to accommodate her and reacts exactly how someone raised in luxury might react when they are delayed at an airport when in fact she is dropped into a nightmare. Instead of instantly transforming into a fearless heroine, the author allows her growth to happen gradually. Ember learns resilience through necessity, and her willingness to adapt makes her later choices much more satisfying.
“I would be more understanding if she was complaining about her injuries. Instead, it’s things like the dampness ruining her hair and breaking a nail. Utter nonsense simply keeps spewing from her mouth.”
ViN also experiences meaningful growth. Beneath his stoic exterior is a male struggling with feelings of inadequacy and a fear of becoming vulnerable. Watching him go from emotionally distant to fiercely protective added depth to his character. His internal conflict over wanting Ember while convincing himself he does not need anyone felt authentic.
The survival elements kept the story moving. The scenes involving underground tunnels, volcanic hazards, and the constant threat of sacrifice created an atmosphere of urgency. The humor sprinkled throughout also helped balance the darker moments. Ember’s tendency to mentally nickname ViN things like “Grouchy Alien Lava God” brought some welcome levity.
As for limitations, the beginning requires patience. Ember’s entitled behavior may frustrate some listeners before her growth becomes apparent. Additionally, readers hoping for uninterrupted romance may find that the external dangers and larger series plot occasionally pull focus from the couple’s relationship. The ending also leaves several broader storyline questions unanswered, clearly setting up future installments rather than providing complete closure.
Narration
Tor Thom and Emily Sutton-Smith continue to be excellent choices for this series. Tor Thom captures ViN’s reserved nature and underlying intensity exceptionally well. His deep voice lends credibility to ViN’s protective instincts while still allowing vulnerability to emerge during emotional scenes.
Emily Sutton-Smith handles Ember’s evolution with skill. She portrays Ember’s initial panic, frustration, and immaturity without making her completely unbearable. As Ember grows stronger and more compassionate, Sutton-Smith subtly adjusts her performance to reflect that maturity.
Together, the narrators maintain a steady pace through both action-heavy sequences and quieter emotional moments. Their performances enhanced the chemistry between Ember and ViN and helped distinguish the large cast of recurring characters familiar to longtime fans of House of DaR.
Final Thoughts
ViN delivered one of the stronger character arcs in the House of DaR series. Ember and ViN are not an immediately lovable couple, which ultimately makes their relationship more rewarding. Their journey from mutual irritation and misunderstanding to trust and devotion feels earned through hardship and sacrifice.
Listeners who enjoy alien romance with survival elements, emotional growth, found family, and protective heroes will likely find plenty to enjoy here. While some lingering questions remain for future books, Ember and ViN’s story offers adventure, humor, heartfelt moments, and a romance that develops in believable stages. By the end, I found myself genuinely invested in both characters and eager to see where the larger series goes next.
ViN is the tenth book in the Daverius, House of DAR series, and tells the story of ViN and Ember.
What a great and original read! It is heartbreaking, sad, loving, and heart-warming, with some fun moments.
I like Sci-fi tales because anything goes, and it's not weird. The world that Jennifer has created is full of modern technology, along with AIs that are more than they seem.
The story is told in multiple POV, which makes the story more immersive. There is action, a variety of aliens; some are truly evil, and others are just big, deadly teddy bears.
Why did you leave us hanging???? Why such an UGLY ENDING??? SO MANY LOOSE ENDS. WHY??? Vin was supposed to be the conclusion of everything!!!! What happened to Scout and Sage??? What is Amber according to😡😡😡 Keida???? Who the heck Sin found inside the tree???😡😡😡😡😟😟😟😟☹️☹️☹️☹️
These are such great stories, the whole series, so worth your time and money, and I can’t wait for the next one. The world building is fabulous, the love scenes are unique and individual, which in itself is so refreshing. As many authors make love the same way with each character even though they don’t even realize they are doing it they change a tiny bit but it’s basically the same love scene over and over.
One of the things I love the most about the stories is the artwork that is these little add-ons in the stories. It started with DaR and just went from there the first store, it was in pets in space and I’ve been addicted since then. I thought these new stories would be boring with a protagonist that is not unusual or different but Jennifer has made them so exciting and interesting. I can’t wait for the next one I really think I am addicted…lol If you haven’t read the whole series, then you’re in for a huge treat, and I suggest bingeing because that’s my favourite way to do these types of things one after another I am always impatient, waiting for the new book. Jennifer Julie Miller has created a wonderful story and a wonderful series with so many stories within a story that it sucks you in and leaves you excited for every new detail as I said before, is truly worth your time and money, and that it is on Kindle Unlimited means that even on a disability, I can read these wonderful stories to which I’m very grateful. So authors if you’re reading this, please consider going on kindle Unlimited with one of your series so I can enjoy your wonderful stories too, being on a disability means I have a lot of time on my hands. So people if you’re looking for a wonderful new series, or are just checking out the new book I give it two thumbs up and Jennifer if you’re reading this, please continue adding the pictures it’s truly one of my favourite series for that alone. They just add so much and I love love the shoes. Thank you, Jennifer Julie Miller for these wonderful stories, and they have made me want to look at your other books as well and I’m very glad I found you. For all you avid reader you have just found your new addiction…lol Take Care & Be Safe.
🛸 ViN: A Gritty, Redemptive 4-Star Journey of Growth and High Stakes!
Jennifer Julie Miller delivers another intense, highly emotional chapter in the House of DaR saga with book ten, ViN. A quick heads-up for readers: this book, just like all the others in this phenomenal series, contains extreme triggers and is strictly intended for a mature audience. It is a dark, gripping first-contact romance that tackles isolation, baggage, and unexpected transformations! 🛸🌌✨
🌌 Designer Shoes and Alien Dangers I was violently separated from my parents and a world where the most important thing I had to worry about was what outfit I was wearing next. Everything I have ever been, or ever will be, was abruptly torn away as I was thrown into never-ending chaos and confusion. Now, I’ve been thrust upon an alien male I can’t understand and surrounded by dangers I don’t comprehend. How am I supposed to cope with the reality of being completely alone on an alien planet where I’m not even wanted? 💔👠🪐
I am ViN. I live solely for the next military mission, with absolutely zero need for a female of any kind. That is, until a whiny, ungrateful, high-maintenance human literal falls into my arms. I don't understand why the feel of her small body and this sudden, desperate urge to make her smile completely confuses me. I am determined to fight this attraction and I refuse to end up like the others. I walk away from the temptation—so why do her tears haunt my every waking moment? 🛡️👽👑
🛸 Why Ember and ViN’s Transformation Won Me Over: Real, Earned Character Growth: I have to be completely honest—this girl, with her expensive shoes and high-and-mighty attitude, had me really not caring for her in the beginning! Ember was a little much at first. But she grew, evolved, and changed so beautifully (and hey, growth is the ultimate goal in a great story, right?). Even when she was annoying, I still didn't want anything bad to happen to her. 📈✨
Unlocking ViN's Full Potential: ViN starts out feeling incredibly lost and deeply divided. But everything changes for him when Ember enters his life. He desperately needed someone to care for to make his full potential explode to life—and watching that happen was a massive, brilliant surprise for his oldest brother, SiN! ⚡️💥
Uncompromising Mature Themes: The gritty, raw nature of this universe continues to shine. The authors don't shy away from the harsh realities of first contact, making the ultimate safety and love these characters find feel incredibly hard-earned. 📉📈
🎧 Audio Performance Review The Narrators: Emily Sutton-Smith & Tor Thom 🎙️🏆
Absolute Masterclass from Our Go-To Duo! Listening to Emily Sutton-Smith and Tor Thom at this point in the marathon is pure, comforting audio luxury. They understand these characters so deeply that their performances elevate every ounce of tension and emotion in the script. 🌟👑
Emily Sutton-Smith deserves an award for Ember's performance! She perfectly captures that whiny, high-maintenance, bratty attitude at the start without making her completely unlikable, and then masterfully softens her voice as Ember undergoes her massive emotional growth. Tor Thom is spectacular as ViN, giving us those deep, rumbling alien tones laced with confusion, reluctance, and an underlying, exploding power. Their chemistry made this a flawless, active listen while I was getting things done! 🎧🔥
My Final Verdict ViN earns a strong, well-deserved 4 stars from me! It is an easy-to-read, deeply entertaining, and high-stakes sci-fi page-turner that delivers incredible character arcs and top-tier world-building. Emily Sutton-Smith and Tor Thom give a premium performance that makes this audiobook a wonderful, comforting place to lay your head. 🛸👠💖
Seeing a spoiled city girl turn into a resilient survivor is such a satisfying ride
Ember's going away party is interrupted by a security detail that claims to be trying to save her life. The BIG storm is coming and she has to go NOW! Being entitled all of her life, she's not used to taking orders from others So she's totally unprepared for what is about to happen. When she wakes up, what she thinks is a dream soon turns into the stuff of nightmares! VIN has been searching Targress Four for some time now. He took this mission with high hopes that the planet's two suns would help him be able to transform like others of his mother's home world. When he takes a fall into an underground cavern and hears a female's screams he goes to investigate. He literally catches her as she's being sacrificed and sees they're outnumbered so he looks for a way out. Ember is terrified but soon turns back into her old demanding self, a girl in her situation IS allowed a breakdown. Right? The fact that he can understand her but not visa versa, makes communication impossible. As they look for a way out, an undeniable attraction grows between them. Ember has a total 180 in her attitude and becomes a . . nice person (believe me, you will see what I'm talking about) and VIN, unwilling to accept his own feelings, turns into a jerk. But fate will not be ignored. You know the old saying, "You never miss a good thing until it's gone"? Well the ones who tried to take her and do her harm are about to find out, YOU DON'T MESS WITH HIS! This story is great! At first you won't like her, then you won't like him, then you'll be rooting for them both and their HEA! I wholeheartedly recommend this read!
A wonderful addition to the series that is both exciting and heartfelt.
Ember is a high-maintenance socialite sent away from a dying Earth by her parents. ViN is a mission-driven son of DaR who claims he doesn’t need or want a female to complicate his life. Their initial encounter is anything but smooth, as Ember, unaccustomed to the harsh realities of alien life, reacts with complaints and an entitled attitude.
Ember's initial ungrateful and spoiled behavior gives way to strength and adaptability as she and ViN are forced to rely on each other to survive. As his emotional walls begin to crumble, he struggles with his emerging feelings for Ember.
Their journey transforms both of them. Ember learns to be resilient, resourceful, and capable. ViN goes from a reclusive warrior who doesn’t feel like he deserves a mate, into a loving and overprotective partner who is ready to do anything to ensure Ember's safety.
The story arc that is woven throughout the series continues. I’m curious to see what will become of SiN and if his brothers and father—and hopefully a mate that can forgive his past—can redeem him.
This book was a delicious read. I was so pleased to see this book pop up on the discover page. I am a fan of the DaR house and all his family. The author is talented with world building. The DaR family is the best. It just makes me laugh when DaR says that he has 23 sons — gets me every time! This story focuses on his son Vin and his rescue of a human female named Ember. This two are an unusual match because Ember is high society and high maintenance. They have so much thrown against them during their journey. I’m glad RaZ, Evo, SoL, Hugo, XuL are part of the fun. Keida is just amazing but she is knowledgeable way beyond her years. If you enjoyed these series then you will enjoy their dangerous journey. If this is your first time, this is a good Sci-Fi romance with lots of secret twists. Read On!
Ember is a spoiled rich girl who is sent in a pod to escape Earth’s destruction. Landing an undetermined number of years later, she is almost sacrificed when Vin unwittingly saves her. Without her language translating they forge an uneasy bond. While fighting their mutual attraction his insecurities force them to part until she is kidnapped. An overprotective notion has ViN ready to kill to get Ember back to beg for a novel chance at happiness. I love this series!
Another wonderful book. This series is so addicting. I already can't wait for the next one. I think Vin and Ember are one of my favorite couples. I actually didn't know if I would like it or not, because I can't stand a spoiled brat, but I'm so glad I read it because it was so good. She ended up adapting and changing her attitude faster than some of the others. I think she is actually one of my favorite. And of course Vin is hot. Lol.
Lava and Scales ….Oh My! What is a girl to do when she is saved by what looks like a dragon man. She shows how stubborn she can be. This is a journey of epic proportions and nether of them can see the light at the end of the tunnel. A miracle is needed to save them from the cold dark tunnels of doom. But will time run out before that miracle can take place? Enjoy!
Vin has been MIA up until this book with only brief glimpses. I have to say I learned so much that I need a breather to sort everything in my head when it comes to him and his past. Blending this family is seriously my favorite part other than the woman that individually make them all see sense! Can’t wait for sin’s book that one will be a heck of a story because he’s pushing my buttons but also makes me so so sad!
It is so good to revisit the House of DaR again. I have missed them. Ember's character was really hard to warm up to and found myself struggling with her. I convinced myself to hang in there as I knew Jennifer wouldn't let us down and she didn't. No spoilers here just hang in there, readers, even though you want to punch Ember a few times!
I wasn’t sure how the sooner was going to go, because it did start out differently than the others. But, I was luckily shown that Jennifer is truly a master of her art. I’m so excited to continue reading this series I think the next two books are going be just as awesome!
A great story . Thank goodness this book lacked the extreme violence and gore some of the other books started with. I like that many of the characters from previous books in the series have active roles in this book. I really did enjoy this book. Don't you like short reviews ?
This series keeps getting better and with each book. I love this series. I have reread the series already. Vin was such an interesting character and the story finding his mate was unique. Great writer
Ember is an high maintenance female with an entitled attitude. She is forced into a pod and shot into space. Vin is off to find the pod and then gets into some trouble.. Oh boy do things get hot. Enjoy
This book is one adventure after another. It was impossible to put down as all of the House of DaR books are. I couldn’t recommend them enough, as they are awesome. I can’t wait for the next one.
I would've liked the couple to have been together more but liked the story overall. Wish we also had confirmation that a certain somebody who protected someone was OK at the very least...I guess we shall see!
The story was amazing. It has everything you like in a romance like darama, feelings, love, and scenes that are hot but doesn't take over the plot? A must buy book.
And my book crack addiction continues. Ember is pretty much tossed into one of the pods on Earth to save her life before getting to talk to her family, because the pod timeline had moved up. She was kinda clueless as to what was really happening, her daddy sheltered her, and didn’t really fill her in, so she was filled in while being strapped into the escape pod. When she comes too, she is drugged and surrounded by what she calls mud monster aliens, and about to be sacrificed to the lava god. And luckily ViN aka Grouchy Alien Lava God, her words not mine, was in the right place at the right time. All the different ways she references him cracked me up, grumpy alien lava god, Mr. Alien Sourpuss and my personal favorite, Grouchy Alien Lava God, because while he is trying to save her, she can’t understand him, but he understands her. So as she is rambling on and on and on, he’s trying to communicate only for it to sound like he’s growling at her….so funny. Poor ViN, and I said poor ViN so many times I lost count, he got the most pampered princess from Earth, the quintessential rich daddy’s girl. He had the patience of a saint because she was a handful, of course he handled her well. Since one of Dar’s sons found her..let’s face it, she’s gonna be a princess in this world too. A lot less clueless, but still pampered all the same. These two go through quite a bit trying to escape to safety, it’s like one obstacle at a time, and by obstacle, I mean one dangerous alien creature at a time, add in being underground, and lava all around…oh good times for sure, winks.
Safe read with a bubbly rich and pampered daddy’s girl and her growly lava god soul bonded mate. Throw in the saliva effect and cinnamon, and you have a very hot couple. Oh, and I like cinnamon too…just saying. Great fast paced storyline that will have you sucked in, with a whole lotta what the moments. Of course there are some SiN shenanigans that cause quite the chaos. Character favorites, organics and AI’s. Oh, and when she meets RaZ….thinks she’s hallucinating seeing a vampire🤣. Great epilogue and hea.
