Riley’s past comes back to haunt him both professionally and personally.
His dead brother left more than just bitter memories for Riley to deal with. The FBI get involved and suddenly it is more than his good name that is on the line. Jack is always there for him but how much more can Riley’s husband reasonably be able to understand?
Especially when Riley finds out on his delayed honeymoon that he has an eight year old daughter he never knew existed...

I didn't find Texas Winter to be quite as enjoyable as The Heart of Texas. Oddly enough, I think this was due to the fact that this story wasn't as outlandish in the drama department as its predecessor, which (apparently) was something I enjoyed a great deal about the first one.
I did love the addition of little Hayley and the ease with which Riley and Jack became parents, however scary and overwhelming it was for both of them initially.
It was also great seeing their extended family members so happy and settled in their own relationships too (old and new alike).
Second book in the Texas Series and just as cute as the first book. I really enjoyed the story line. Even though sometimes it was a little over the top with the smaller little conflicts that they encounter, everything that happens in this book fits in perfectly with where these guys are heading long term in life. I love that they are adding to their family even if only by accident.
The narration from Sean Crisden was great. I will forever think of Jack and Riley when I hear his voice. I love how he portrays them and even all the smaller side characters. Really enjoyable narration and I look forward to hearing more of this series.
I fell in love with Jack and Riley in book one. This was ok but i felt that the steam level reduced. The soapy feel of book one was also low. Still it was an enjoyable read.
When I read The Heart of Texas I instantly fell in love with Riley and Jack. The troubles they go through and Riley's self-discovery were enough to make me tear up. When it comes to sequels, though, it's hard to live up to a book that was so amazing you can't find the right words. I really enjoyed seeing Riley and Jack again and seeing them tackle another problem but more than that I'm just happy to say I was in no way disappointed with this story.
I still loved Riley and Jack and I feel like they really are a great couple. They can get through anything from an unexpected kid to dealing with multiple crazy people to the after affects of shady business deals and while their relationship might get a little rocky, in the end, they can handle anything together as long as they have each other. Jack still has his temper but counters it with such passion. Riley is almost a mess in this book but he's more confident in himself than before. They both take to Riley's new daughter, Hayley, really well and I felt like they finally became the family they should be. It was very sweet.
My only problem with the book was I felt like the conflict with the FBI and all of that situation was rather rushed and incomplete. I was hoping we got a lot more details on it than we did. The whole situation kind of flew by and I still don't feel like it was settled because I still have a bunch of questions about it.
So, would I recommend this book? Yeah, I would but then again I'm a huge Riley and Jack fan so no matter how many sequels comes after this one, if any, I'll read them because I love this series, these characters and RJ's writing. It's not as intense as The Heart of Texas but it's much sweeter and that suited me just fine :)
I have to put this because it was one of the sweetest moments in the book:
Yey! Jack and Riley are back with more outrageous drama and a soap opera story which sees the FBI involved with the historical dirty dealings of Riley's dead brother Jeff and a personal surprise in the form of an eight-year-old daughter.
Along the way there's a dastardly uncle trying to get control of Riley's surprise daughter, there's an interview with the press in the form of Riley's sister Eden's boyfriend and there's trauma for Jack as his mother falls for the local vet, 20 years younger than her.
I liked this one but it wasn't quite as bonkers as book one and it felt shorter so it's not another five star read for me.
I heart Jack & Riley. And I love reading part 2 of their story. And I’m obsessed with their devotion to each other. And I’m blissful with the progression of their relationship and the growth of their family.
And that is all that matters.
If you don’t love Jack & Riley, I’m sure you’ll find all kinds of holes and OTT moments to roll your eyes at. But, if you DO love these boys, this book will make you happy.

Ezinwanyi~ThatEzi (Oh My Shelves) (Ezinwanyi) | 1637 commentsCOMPLETION POST Week 5: Option 1 ~ 8. Ray Hunt was a well-known horse-trainer. This sequel starts off with Jack and Riley's honeymoon getting cut short by a phone call from Eden demanding they return home immediately.
Riley's past has come to threaten his future with Jack. The Hayes family are still reeling from the betrayal by their brother and father. But now a personal and professional issue is creating a rift and Riley has become distant. Can their love endure more Hayes drama?
This book was just as entertaining as book 1, perhaps a little less angsty. But I was so pleased that Jack was rock solid and gave Riley support needed to deal with these issues. The fact that Riley never had to question their love and commitment was key to truly resolving the personal issue.
I love them together, I love the healing occuring within their families. I felt good listening to this audiobook and the direction of the overall plot.
I think I've been sleeping on this author and will get book 3 today.
Great narration, which somewhat made up for the OTT drama and ridiculous, at times, scenarios.
But it was a fun listen, fits in well with the series so far, and is a little bit like a bag of chips...you only mean to eat a few, but the next thing you know, you look down and the bag is gone.
I absolutely LOVE Sean's voice for Jack. I listened to this in one sitting, and enjoyed it all. Anyone who loves the series should grab the audio - Sean is wonderful.
The book just passed through, leaving nothing behind but boredom and annoyance.
Riley and Jack accepted Riley's daughter into the family, which I think is about 30 pages total; the rest is space fillers - everything they do or say or show on their faces is over the top, every single action accompanied by chest tightening (x100500)/aching/being deceptively calm, every thought slapping/smacking/hitting them like a truck. Really? There was nothing that deserved such dramatism. Stuff like this:
The silence was dangerous. It was the calm before the storm.
Oh my, should I hold my breath? And it's all over the book.
Also the little girl was a bit slow. I know a lot of kids that are brighter than this, and they are much younger. She should have been 4 or 5 - what's with lifting her arms for Riley to take her.
Anyways, I should have listened to people and avoided it.
I said this after I read The Heart of Texas and I think it fits with this book too...It totally feels like a prime-time mini series type thing but it wasn't as OTT as book 1. (I would so watch something like this if they ever decided to make one.).
Anyway, back on point. Riley & Jack stole my heart when they wormed their way into each others. I forgot how much I enjoyed them until I picked this book up. I enjoyed getting to peak back into their lives which was just starting to calm down enough that we needed something to shake it up again. This shake up just so happens to be an 8 year old sweetheart named Hayley. (and there was another shake up or two as well).
I can't wait to spend some more time with this little family. :)
"The world, for me, and all the world can hold, is circled in your arms, for me there lies, within the lights and shadows of your eyes, the only beauty that is never old."
With those words of love, Riley married Jack at the end of the last book in this series, "The Heart of Texas", committing himself to the relationship that started as a way to get back at his father. Jeff was able to forgive Riley for manipulating him into the marriage, and make it a real partnership.
As "Texas Winter" picks up, Riley and Jack are living on the D ranch, exploring their love, and settling into this new and passionate relationship. Riley is able to talk Jeff into taking some time off for their honeymoon, and the two share some quality bonding time together away from both families. Until Riley's peace of mind is shattered by a call from his sister Eden, informing him of the arrival of his daughter. The daughter he never knew he had.
As Jack and Riley return back home to deal with this unexpected addition to their lives, Riley also is contacted by his father, Jim, about a business...irregularity...involving his brother Jeff. As he becomes more and more distracted and upset and distant from his husband, will Jack and Riley find a way to make all these new changes work in their new and sometimes fragile relationship? Or will it all prove to be too much?
This is a worthy and, in some ways, superior, follow up to "The Heart of Texas", RJ Scott has written a true love story - about the love between two men, between family, between a father and daughter. Some of this love is quiet, some loud, some passionate, some gentle. Love grows here, and love is found. New love is formed.
We get to see Riley struggle and turn to Jack for strength. And we see Riley there for Jack, in ways he never expected. We see both men learn how strength takes many forms, how sometimes it's a touch, or a kind word, or passion, or quiet calm in the eye of the storm.
Most of all, we see the beginning of a new family. Riley grew up in a "quiet mausoleum", devoid of love except for his sister, and was given a taste of how family can be when he saw the loud love and laughter of the Campbell household. When he and Jack and their new daughter come together to bond as a family of their own, we are treated to a softening and strengthening in Riley that is wonderful to see.
While there is action in this book (the mess Jeff leaves for his brother to clean up puts Riley's life in danger yet again), this is a much more controlled, quiet ballad of a book, where "The Heart of Texas" was more a rock opera. The heart of this book is in its core - love. And really, the best reads always come back to that center.
This was a great sequel to a terrific book. I felt like I was coming back home. It was good to see how Jack and Riley grew as a couple to the point where they read eachother perfectly. The sudden appearance of Riley's daughter, Hayley definitely shook things up. There were places in the story where Hayley was more the adult than Riley was. I absolutely loved when Hayley told Riley that he and Jack should keep the bedroom door closed sometimes. I enjoyed the way Ms Scott kept all of the characters from The Heart of Texas moving through this story. The book pulled me in right from the start and like all of her books gave me the HEA. There is definitely enough going on in this book for another Campbell-Hayes book. If you enjoyed The Heart of Texas, you'll love Texas Winter.
Better than the previous one; I think I missed listening to Sean Crisden! Still a LOT of drama (not quite the Telenovella Level of Book 1), but I can see why this one made the Tearjerker with a HEA list. I loved the growing pains of becoming parents after a tragedy (struggles with Haley's custody and some strengthening of their relationship) and how Jack was all-in for being a dad.
I would say 4.5 stars. I really liked it and I cried enough at all the right moments--engagements, life saving, kiddy, dad, etc... However as much as I wanted the original to continue, this felt like vignettes of their lives strung together with the child. I didn't get an overarching trajectory. It was more like just getting thru the year with a life threatening incident at the end. I guess thinking about it more it does have a climax that it was building to, but the violent part of it wasn't built up that it felt disjointed. All the love that goes on was delicious and touched me. Seeing the tables turned on each MC as they had the log pulled out of their own eye so they could see the spec in their partner or their mother or whomever was well done. Lovely continuation of the original, but somehow just not the same.
3.5 - I was very excited about this book coming out as I wanted more of a look into Riley and Jack's relationship once the dust settled. There was not a moment for them in Heart of Texas to just 'be' in the first book and getting to see domestic life and how they lived day in and day out was missing.
I got what I wanted in this book. In Texas Winter, we get to watch them live together, interact, solve problems and expand their family. They know each other so well sometimes and other times we see them still learning their way. Sure there was some Dallas like moments, but they were more muted and less extraordinary. Again, for me, this was a good thing as I wanted a more character based story. This book hit the spot for me!
✔ Letto! Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e 💋
Overall book rating 3.5/5 Stars Audio boon - N/A Book Cover 3.5/5 Stars
I have to be honest this book was not as good as the firs one but it was still a nice read.
Is it just me or do you get this feeling through the whole book the shoe is about to fall? Not like the what happened at the end. More like something big like we missed something from the first book and its following, like you just missed something and then nothing but the feeling stays hidden just beneath the surface... Maybe I am a crazy!!!!
I was practically stalking RJ about this book as though she had the ability to make Nov. 19th come sooner in the month. I read it in one sitting. I really enjoyed this book, and feel that there's at least two more sequels based on an unfinished storyline concerning an FBI investigation, and Riley's new daughter.
I was hyper while waiting to read about a year into Riley and Jack's life, and I wasn't disappointed. I got to see how far they have developed as a couple. I loved how comfortable Riley was with sharing a bed with Jack and having sex. I loved how Riley and Jack handled the news of Halley, the daughter Riley didn't know he had. Jacks support and love for Riley was unwavering, even if they still got into disagreements. It wouldn't have been real if they hadn't.
The only reason this book got 4 stars and not 5 like the first book was a few inconsistencies from the first book in the series that is one of my favorite books. They dealt with money. I didn't understand why Riley asked the headmaster at the school they were going to enroll Halley in if she would still be able to go if money became a problem. When asked if it would Riley said no, so why'd he ask in the first place? I also didn't understand why there was such a smaller amount of money Riley could access after Halley's trust fund was created. In book 1 Riley was rolling in money. Even after everyone got their share he should have had more left over to get his hands on or to make the trust fund even bigger. When you read the book you'll understand why I was confused about how much liquid money Riley could access in an emergency. If I got this wrong, fellow readers or RJ please let me know.
As a side note, still concerning money, as close as Jack and Riley became within a year, couldn't Jack have accepted using some of Riley's money to fis up the house and farm? I was annoyed for some weird reason that the damn driveway still had potholes. Crazy I know, but that's how into their story I am. So next book, please pave the driveway and upgrade the farm and house. Sure the kitchen table has memories, but you can replace it with one that's not scratched. Or let Jack start making more money with his horse breeding. Not that Jack needed to use the money in the manner that he wanted to concerning his mom.
Let me get back on track. I enjoyed this book a great deal and highly recommend this book. To RJ Scott, if I am wrong and you don't have at least two more sequels planned, then you need to because there were some issues that weren't resolved in this story.
I am an avid fan of Riley and Jack and, indeed, RJ Scott :)
Texas Winter was a beautifully written, heart-warming story that just cemented the boys' love and support of and for each other when the world throws them another curveball in the shape of a daughter for Riley. Jack is there to back him up every step of the way and it was lovely to catch up with their extended families.
For me... this lacked the emotional and edge of the seat punch of Heart of Texas, but it was still an enjoyable read and I finished it in two sittings. I would recommend it for a cold afternoon when you are curled up on the sofa with a glass of wine in one hand and a box of chocolates in the other :)
I waited anxiously for this sequel, I LOVED The Heart of Texas with Jack & Riley and really wanted more of them, this story didn't disappoint. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because for me it was a bit too short, I really wanted more story. Riley was still very insecure with his relationship with Jack which I had hoped he wouldn't be in the second book. I was wanting to see them working out what ever ups and downs came their way with Riley being completely secure in his relationship with Jack. I want more, more, more of these two!!!!
Sean Crisden does a nice job with the narration (he always does), but I think my tastes have changed since first reading this story. The story didn't grab me which affected my enjoyment of the narration.
