Series: Book #1 in the “Chestnut Academy” series. Connected to the author’s other series, “The Tales of Tarsurella”, but does not have to be read first or together.

Spiritual Content- Millie’s father tells her to not lose sight of who she is when at the school and that it doesn’t matter what others think of her, adding that she’s a Princess of God and His royal daughter as well; A few mentions of God;
*Note: Mentions of horses having miracle-working, magical powers (of getting another girl to talk to Millie when upset with her; *Spoiler* ); A few mentions of pixie dust, fairy wings, & a fairy godmother; A few mentions of being lucky.

Negative Content- Minor cussing including: an ‘oh my stars’, a ‘stinkin’’, a ‘stupid’, two ‘duh’s, and three ‘freakshow/freak’ (said by a mean girl towards Millie); A bit of eye rolling & sass; Falling off of a horse & pain (no major injuries, up to semi-detailed); A girl is scared of horses & nearly falls off of one when riding (which is a scary situation for her and those watching, up to semi-detailed); Millie has first day of school jitters; Millie overhears another student at her school say that the Royal Family of Tarsurella is snooty and stuck up (she’s never met them, but has read all the gossip magazines) and thinks it will be a “royal pain” to have an “annoying princess” at their school; Millie is desperate for the other girls to like her and dyes her hair for them not to recognize her as the princess (she notes the bottle says to use it with adult supervision, but because her dad is busy and would probably say no, she does it herself and wonders what she’s done when she sees the color; Another girls says her dad would not let her do that to her hair and Millie thinks “Welp. Neither would mine”); Millie is excited to become the “new and improved Millie” who doesn’t get lost in the crowd of all of her siblings and not having to follow in her older sisters’ footsteps (she doesn’t share much about herself to her roommates because of her being a princess and gets tripped up when trying to make conversation); Millie tries to lie to her teacher (it just fell out of her mouth), but the teacher sees through it; *Spoiler* ; A couple snooty girls & their rude comments and taunts to other girls (Millie is uncomfortable with the strife, thinking “Why was everyone acting so competitive? Wasn’t this supposed to be fun?” and tries to reassure the others about having fun and not fretting about things they can’t control; One of Millie’s roommates puts them back in their place a couple of times, but not rudely; Millie falls for a couple of their taunts and talks back, which ends with them taunting her harder and her in tears; *Spoiler* ); McKayla wants to knock a mean girl off of “her high horse of pride”, but knows that’s wrong; Mentions of lies, lying, & liars; Mentions of bullies & bullying; Mentions of manure; A few mentions of hatred; A few mentions of jealousy (an adult says that “building long-lasting, beautiful friendships is far more rewarding than any old trophy could ever be” and encourages the girls to not fall prey to jealousy, comparison, and competition); A couple mentions of a thief & robbing a place; A mention of gossip magazines;
*Note: Millie is sad to say goodbye to her father (when dropping her off at the boarding school) and tries not to cry; Mentions of Amelia Earhart (Millie looks up to her); Mentions of brand names (Twizzlers, M&Ms, & Jell-O); A couple mentions of children’s TV show (Barney); A mention of the book/movie ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’; A mention of a comment being an outrage and compared to if the person said that “boys were cooler than girls”; A mention of a rule for a club being “no boys allowed”.

I’ve been excited for this new Christian middle-grade series since I first heard about it and this first book was so much fun! I’m not a big horse girl, but I can see those who are especially liking this story.

Even though there were mean girls, it was handled well and quickly for the size of the book. It was also really nice to see good adults represented in this story and Millie learn the meaning of being true to herself. The pacing was quick and I’m excited to read the rest of the series as they release!

I honestly can’t think of a reason as to why I didn’t enjoy this book! It’s got a princess, horses, friendships, and great morales; exactly what the inner child in me adores.

Millie feels like a second little sister to me and I was just as in love with her story as I was with her older siblings’s stories.

This is a story I would’ve loved when I was younger and something I still enjoy. I mean, are we ever too old to be reminded of the issues with lying or to squeal over horses? I don’t think so.

Millie is just as spunky as she is in the Tales of Tarsurella and oh so loveable. Misti is the mentor character I always wanted when I was younger. McKayla is the extrovert every friend group needs. And Mimi is the shy, plushie-loving girl that little me would’ve considered as herself in the story.

I can’t wait to read more of Millie’s adventures at Chestnut Academy!

My 9-year-old daughter absolutely loved this book. She read it in just 3-4 days and has already been asking me when the 2nd book comes out.

She loved reading about the horses and the friendships in the book. She said it was a fun book that she wants to reread.

As a parent, I'm excited for new, clean, age-appropriate books for my kids and am so thankful for the authors who stay true to this.

Looking forward to book 2 and any more that Ms. Jarmusch writes.

**I received an ARC. All opinions are my (and my daughter's) own.

Undercover Princess was a fun middle grade book. It is book 1 in the Chestnut Academy series. In book 1 Princess Millie starts attending school at a boarding school in Kentucky called Chestnut Academy. Along with regular school subjects the girls also do horseback riding.
I enjoyed the story! I actually gave this book to my book club girls who are ages 8-12 and they really enjoyed it!

This was a refreshingly cute story for girls 8-10 years old. For fans of The Tales of Tarsurella, you may recognize Princess Millie from those stories. However, though I haven’t finished the Tarsurella series, this story worked very well independently, and I’m now trying to get my little sister to read it, as well, even though she’s a little older than the recommended reading age.
I really loved how this story centered around identity, talking about how we need to root our identities in Christ, because that’s just such an important thing to share with younger generations of readers.
It was nice to be able to pick up this short little book, and I enjoyed Millie’s characters, and felt that this was just a very wholesome story. Simply written and full of horses that will make any horse-loving girl instantly interested, this story reminded me of something that I would have read when I was younger, and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
I’d also like to say that I was surprised by the quality and the quantity of the faith content in this story, and I’m so happy to see another Christian fiction story for younger girls! I definitely enjoyed this story, and I would recommend it for middle-grade readers, especially those interested in royalty, horses, or both!

A huge thank you to the author for writing this great children’s story!!!

This book was a time machine that transported me back to my childhood.

Undercover Princess is a sweet, fun tale that is reminiscent of the classic Barbie movies from the 2000s and American Girl novels.

The story follows Millie, a spirited princess, and her equestrian adventures at boarding school. The plot and characters are exactly what I would have adored reading when I was 8-12.

It’s a must-have for any parent looking for wholesome novels for their horse crazy girls!

I finished the book two days ago and I really enjoyed it!

The book was well-written. The plot was well-developed and the story wasn't too dragged out and not too condensed. Each of the main characters has a unique personality that stands out among the others.
The story contained some good messages such as embracing who you truly are, and being truthful to others.

One thing that I liked about this book is how the adult characters were depicted as good characters who try to teach principles and values, and try to make the children feel welcome and at home in the Academy.
Although Millie wasn't completely honest throught the whole story, she was a good-hearted and empathetic character who cared for others.
One thing about this book that puzzled me a bit was the maturity-level of speech and reasoning that the girls displayed. The main characters' ages range from 10 years old to 12. Thus said, I felt that their way of talking and reasoning was more like the way a thirteen or fourteen year old would talk and think. This is just an impression that I got and I could be very wrong on this matter, considering the fact that I am definitely not an expert on how typical anglo-saxon children talk or reason. I was raised in Italy, and spent most of my time among other Italian-speaking children, so I am not too familiar with the typical reasoning or manner of speech of a typical anglo-saxon 10 year old, therefore my thoughts on this matter might not be correct.

In any event, this was a good book that contained some good lessons and I very much enjoyed it!

The series I wish I had when I was a child!
"'Every adventure begins with a step of bravery.'"
This sweet story is definitely going up with my childhood MG book favorites! Millie's childlike spirit and imagination rubs off on readers, and these cast of characters are ones you won't be able to forget. The truth woven in about forgiveness, friendship, and our identity as children of God is especially powerful and is sure to encourage and inspire girls young and old alike. Beautiful descriptions and realistic dialogue pulls you right into the story, and you are hooked from the beginning. By the end, you'll feel like these characters have become your friends and you are right alongside them in their horse training academy adventures. Cannot wait for book 2 in this new classic series!
Aside from this amazing book, the author has also provided an interactive website http://chestnutacademy.club/ with superrrr fun tidbits, illustrations, and activities of Chestnut Academy!

The first installment of Livy Lynn’s Chestnut Academy series, Undercover Princess, is absolutely delightful! It’s fun to see Princess Millie from the Tales of Tarsurella series getting to have her own adventures- and at a school with horses no less! This is definitely a book I would’ve loved as a kid.

Undercover Princess also brings to light a lot of issues young girls deal with that I think a lot of them will relate to, including bullying and wanting to fit in. There were some girls who were super mean to Millie, it was a realistic representation of what girls ages 10-12 experience, and was done incredibly well. It wasn’t sugarcoated despite being meant for a younger demographic, and as an adult who recognizes the need for this in children’s media, I really appreciated it.

The message of Undercover Princess was also really well done. It isn’t thrown in your face, nor is it only brought up towards the end. It is seamlessly woven throughout the narrative, and it is beautifully done. Little girls in this generation are constantly searching for their identity, and the lesson of this sweet story meets them right where they are. Can’t wait to see what other adventures Millie embarks on at Chestnut Academy and all her new friends!

I resurrected my Goodreads account in part because there are a handful of books that I want to share reviews on, this one included!

Undercover Princess is the sort of middle grade story I would have devoured in middle/upper elementary. A princess (in secret!) and horses, could there be a better middle grade combo?! Having read the first of Olivia Jarmusch's Tarsurella series, it was very fun to see spunky little sister Millie getting her own book. The novel is aimed at girls 8 to 12, and incorporates horses, a special academy, navigating friendships, and being true to yourself in a really engaging manner. It reminded me in the best way of some of my favorite classic American Girl stories, like Felicity Learns a Lesson. Yay for uplifting middle grade!

Note: Five star rating is given in comparison to other middle grade novels and with its intended audience in mind. However, even though I am decidedly not the intended audience, I still thoroughly enjoyed it myself.

I was able to read an advanced copy, with no expectations in return, and no expectation of a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are all my own. That said, I loved it so much that I purchased an additional copy for my own shelves and a copy to gift to a young friend!

Undercover princess is an absolute delight read. The story picks up with Princess Millie from Tarsurella who is starting a new school at Chestnut Academy in Kentucky. Millie wants to be treated like everyone else and decides to hide the fact that she is the Princess. It is a darling book that teaches the importance of being who God designed you to be. It teaches friendship, honesty, has good morals, and such a super fun story. This is a standalone from the Tales of Tarsurella. While it is helpful to read the series, you will not be lost if you have not read them or are still working on the series. I highly recommend this series for any girl who loves horses and friendship.

I received an early arc, but these thoughts are all my own.

Undercover Princess, a delightful adventure full of sweet friendships, valuable lessons, and lots of horses!

Livy did such an awesome job creating this sweet series that uplifts and encourages girls to embrace being the women God created them to be, and to be a good friend who is faithful and honest in all they do! I couldn’t more highly recommend this story for any of the girls in your life!

If you have a girl in your life who loves adventure, princesses, laughter, friendship, or horses this is the perfect story! Clean, uplifting, and inspiring, this beautiful story will capture the hearts of many young girls!

If that cover doesn't just scream horse-crazy, then you've obviously never been bitten by the horse bug. 😂

Undercover Princess was so stinkin' cute! The little girl in me loved every single aspect of it. I wish I had this book growing up! Olivia did a spectacular job writing from the POV of a ten-year-old girl, and the content was squeaky-clean and beautiful.

If you have a little girl (or a bigger one!) in your life, I can't recommend this book enough! 🤎

Aw, that was sweet!! It's been a while since I read a book in one sitting and this was a great book to do that with. It was light and cheery and just a sweet middle grade book. It was shorter and the plot wasn't too complex so I'd put it on the lower MG side especially since the MC is 10.
I've been wanting to read this FOREVER and I'm so so happy I finally read it. 🥰
Excited to pick up the next books. Good job, Livy! 🫶🏻

I am unashamedly biased when it comes to Livy's books and I am so excited that there is going to be a series for younger girls now!!!! That the series is set around Millie from The Tales of Tarsurella just makes it that much better!

Bias aside, I thought this was a really good story for young girls. Millie seemed like a character that girls will be able to relate to (heck, even I still want to be liked!) and, while all the girls sometimes seemed a little too grown-up and mature, each time I found myself thinking that, something would happen or be said that would bring it all back down to the proper age category.

Something I loved about this book and that I'm excited for in the whole series is that Millie & Co. are learning super valuable lessons but there is nothing preachy about it. I think that will make this more accessible to a wider audience.

Livy did a fantastic job letting this series be stand alone, as in, you don't have to read all the Tarsurella books before this BUT she also is somehow able to tie it in. It's like a side story to the Tarsurella series. And I have to say, if Millie can't be with Clark, Mr. O'Teal seems like a great substitute. I really liked him a lot.

My only complaint was that it was too short! :) I know it's for young readers so it's not supposed to be long but I can never have enough time with my Millie-girl!!! I'm so excited to see where this series goes!

This was a fun read-aloud to do with all of my girls! Every one of them ages 3 to 9 loved it and couldn't wait to read the next chapter. We are not big horse people and my kids tend to stay away from horse books, but this story was more focused on the private academy aspect and the relationships involved there and we all really enjoyed it!

I was infinitely blessed to alpha-read this sweet middle grade series, despite being far beyond the typical age demographic. Livy’s “The Tales of Tarsurella” saga was my all-time favorite growing up (and still is to this day). And now, it has an offshoot component for a whole new generation of girls!!

All of Livy’s classic whimsy is present in “Undercover Princess.” Full of beautiful horses, purple hair-dye craziness, cute banter, and chocolate appreciation——this next installment into the world of Tarsurella is a treat for longtime fans. As well as their daughters, little sisters, or even nieces!!

The heart of Livy’s storytelling has always been about uplifting girls, and teaching them how to understand (and LOVE) their royal identity in Christ. Millie and her precious friends reveal the root of her ministry, yet again. The lessons Livy poses within her lyrical prose will saturate any shelf with song and praise, reminding princesses young and old that the only person they need to be is who God is shaping them into. <3
