Darkly, Madly #2

מוטרפים מלידה

Rate this book

“Love is pain. Real love—the one not spewed in poetry—is agony. It tears at your soul, strips you bare, drives you mad and demands the veracity of our existence. Love is madness.”

I FEEL LIKE IM GONNA GO INSANE BECAUSE OF HOW GOOD THIS DUET WAS!!! GRAYSON AND LONDON ARE SO INSANE AND TWISTED AND I LOVE THEM WITH MY WHOLE HEART!

ALSO IMMERSIVE READING WITH THE AUDIOBOOK IS NOT OPTIONAL!!! Quite literally one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. JACOB MORGAN AND SAMANTHA BRENTMOOR IN DUET>>>>>>>>>>>>> a million stars. And I am so picky about audiobooks I genuinely cannot stand the majority of narrators and feel so disconnected when I’m listening so like this is very telling. I will relisten over and over again.

“And I am lured. Completely. She owns my entire being. Flesh and bone. My black soul belongs to her. With one look, she takes me down. If she demands I kneel right here, I’ll drop to my knees, offer penance for my sins as I plead for her to devour me.”

GRAYSON SULLIVAN THE PSYCHOPATH THAT YOU ARE!!!! No guys I don’t think you understand I could read 100 books about him and it not be enough. AND WHEN SHE IS ALSO A KILLER AND MATCHES HIS FREAK AND HAS HIM ON HIS KNEES WRAPPED AROUND HER FINGER!!!!

No I need this injected into my veins. The only reason for taking half half a star is because it felt predictable at points and I wanted to see just a little more of them being crazy together but god it’s amazing.

“London is the music awakening my soul. She’s the reason my heart beats. I’m alive for her—I’m free because of her, and now we’re unstoppable.”

“If she only realized just how much control she has over me, the fucking damage she could do.”

“The loss of her touch is immediate agony.”

Okay bye. I’m done.

“We were not born the day we took our first breath. We were born the moment we stole it".

Is there a therapist around right now?! Because holy fucked up of ALL fuckups!!! I'm seriously questioning my state of mind right now because after reading this conclusion, there is something wrong with me!. I practically inhaled this messed up story and let me tell you, it was FUCKED up. If you thought you knew everything about London and Grayson in “Born Darkly, you’re in for one rude awakening.

It’s been six weeks since Grayson has been on the run from the law and every second that passes, is bringing him more closer to his madness. But now he has someone to share that madness with and whoever said crazy is not contagious, has clearly never met this couple. With a cat and mouse game that will surely make your head spin and have you questioning whether everyone is a suspect, London and Grayson's journey will leave you an emotional paranoia mess.

I’ve been waiting on the conclusion to this story for a while now and when I finally got to it, I thought to myself: I’ve got this. I know what’s going to happen and we're just going to get a nice little HEA at the end to wrap things up. That was NOT the case because this author, clearly needs to have her head examined! I kept waiting for some type of remorse from these characters and just when I finally think I have it in my grasp, she goes and throws a big wrench that had me like:

You’re probably thinking that if Grayson is one of the most dangerous serial killers, there’s no hope for him in a normal society. You’re absolutely right because that man is crazy as fuck! I literally have no words when it comes to his state of mind and the things that he does but….. I loved him. No need to reread what I just wrote or turn your screen brightness up a little more because it's not going to change the fact that I fell for a serial killer. Someone get me a straight jacket because obviously I need to be committed ASAP! I loved his warped mind, his ability to get shit done on his terms, and his own version of loving London. He was not a good man and never claimed to be, but when it came to protecting the woman he cared about, Grayson delivered.

“Everything I do, every single day, is a risk for you.”

This was a brilliant, outstanding, bone chilling duet that had the perfect amount of sexiness that made you want more. You craved the words and the psychological turmoil that were going to be put on and you didn’t care because this story? These characters? The fear and danger you felt on your skin as you turn each page? Was fucking worth it.

Ours is not a love story—we’re too volatile, too explosive for monotony. No, our story comes with a warning.

this review is a combination of my thoughts from book one and two because my thoughts on both are similar so didn’t feel like repeating myself twice.

⟡ the concept of this duet? 10/10

⟡ the sexual tension between London and Grayson? a solid 8.5/10

⟡ the plot and execution?

description

this duet has been on my tbr for probably two years and finally gave in after finishing the Mindf*ck series because i wanted something that had a serial killer MC... Grayson Sullivan was no Lana Myers, i will tell you that, right now.

the first book started off strong. then my interest dwindled in the second half of book one. and by the first chapter of book two, i realised i would rather be trapped in one of Grayson’s torture devices than be stuck inside his superfluous inner monologue a moment longer.

because, ultimately, i think this was my main issue and why i was struggling so damn hard with this second book— the overly poetic, “deep” psycho-babble about the psyche of a serial killer, but specifically Grayson and London’s, was physically painful for me to read.

it stifled the pacing and the fluidity of the book because Grayson was just repeating the same shit in the exact same font over and over again. and it made my generic dislike of him plummet to new lows.

his god complex was nauseating in the second half of book one and the entirety of book two. the first half of book one, he was so allusive and pretty captivating to me. he had intrigue and depth that really exemplified the complex mind of a serial killer that i know the author was attempting to achieve throughout both books. i loved the conversations between him and London in her office, the back and forth, his snark and intelligence, the way he could twist her words and throw them back at her like knives. all of it was fascinating.

but for me, the achievement of portraying a genuinely intriguing, dark killer was short-lived when all of his weird theatrics were introduced in the second half of book one.

because the second half of book one? we don’t know her!! i genuinely didn’t understand a) what exactly was going on, b) why exactly this was going on? this is spoilery so run if you care... but everything Grayson did to London made zero sense to me? maybe im dumb but putting her in the torture chamber he designed for her truly baffled me? like he was punishing her and wanting her to repent for what.. being a victim? it pained me to read the breakdown of her mind at times because i truly don’t think she deserved it.

while he continued to play god thinking he was invincible just upped my frustration because he acted like his type of sinning was acceptable while hers wasn’t... when in reality, they’d done very similar things— he physically tortured his victims who were rapists, murderers and pedophiles, while she unknowingly mentally tortured her criminal patients who were convicted rapists, murderers and pedophiles... and he was punishing her for it? i truly don’t know what his motives were, it was bizarre to read. i had zero clarity then and still none now. if anyone wants to enlighten me, seriously lemme know😭

She’s becoming a necessity, part of my addiction, and just as I can’t quiet the compulsions, the absence of her stirs a restlessness, the fear of not having her a madness squirming inside my mind.

while London... again, loved her in the beginning of book one. just watching her buttoned-up persona slowly unravel as Grayson got under her skin and peeled back her layers was immaculate. her character had a very clear direction up until she decided to go with Grayson and was subject to his weird torture chamber. her character lost a lot of its poignancy and stability right there.

and yes, you’re probably thinking “that’s the point” when she lost her stability, but i don’t mean it in regards to her mind as it slowly crumbled. but in the sense of her character direction? from this point onwards, she was so flimsy and aimless to me, just like the plot. i couldn’t pin her down, she was very hazy and difficult to read. i think you can write a character losing their sense of self without it being incoherent to read. and she felt incoherent at this point. i really don’t know if im explaining this right... the story just lost all the semblance of what made me enjoy it in the first place.

by the beginning of book two, i did gain some clarity back with London— she basically became Harley Quinn and i wasn’t mad about it. it was just Grayson who made book two insufferable spouting his pseudo-deep bullshit. i craved to be in her head more than his because she was very analytical but simultaneously emotional. while Grayson was chatting shit out of his arse with pointless metaphor after pointless metaphor the whole time.

In a fit of emotive overload, Grayson could profess his love or kill me with an equal measure of indifference.

ultimately, i just think the story is incredibly shallow despite its attempts at being “deep”. i think the plot was weak, too much telling with barely any showing so it was actually hard to keep up with what was going on because my brain couldn’t handle all the info-dumping. maybe that’s why i was confused most of the time. clues just weren’t laid out strategically, rather there was a brief ominous mention and it was never spoke of again until it’s later revealed. but it doesn’t give you the satisfaction of finding something out because it’s not cleverly placed within the story. more so like it was mentioned so the author could say it was mentioned just without the needed explanation.

it was the same when it came to London being Grayson’s “dark goddess” that only he could see... sincerely where??? i really didn’t see how they were similar beyond her morbid fascination with serial killers. not necessarily because she was one. i really didn’t see her as a killer or anything remotely dark. she was a victim of her circumstances... circumstances that were so vague and surface level too. same with Grayson’s backstory.

everything was just too convenient. like the plot of book two with Nelson.

description

again... lazy. weird. shallow. boring... im getting as repetitive as this book im so sorry.

Stunned, I stare down at him. “You’re a monster.”
“I’m your monster. Tell me, and you’ll own me. Completely.” He strokes the side of my hand. The rattle of his chains forces my eyes closed.

also... the smut in this was so weird. it was clinical almost? honestly, i would categorise this as a psychological thriller more than a romance. the romance was lacking... and so was the thriller part. the stakes were so low and weak it was difficult to become invested in the story. i think because Grayson loved his little mind games, it meant that nothing of value is ever divulged and i think that’s the main reason i struggled to much with this.

there’s nothing to sink your teeth into because you’re not offered anything of substance to get invested in. the mind games of Grayson are even too vague and pretentious to understand.

i wanted this to be an intense, thrilling romance but i just got a painfully boring and lacklustre experience.

We’re a duet—we belong together. One cannot exist without the other.

i also saw that Sadie, a side character from this duet, has a trilogy and if this one didn’t bore me to tears, id give that a go.

KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

BORN, MADLY: Is the second book in Trisha Wolfes ‘Darkly, Madly Duet’ series, it is best to read these in sequence, this is not a standalone novel. ‘Spoken in dual Perspectives’

Finally this stunning, captivating much anticipated ending to the Darkly, Madly duet is finally here and it does not disappoint us readers one bit!! A dark, gritty, disturbing tale of an unconventional twisted love that had me biting my nails in anticipation wondering what the outcome would be for these two lovers.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This was one of my most highly anticipated books of February and like everyone else I was lining up on that wants wagon stalking updates on when this would be released. I knew going into this and what the author threw at us in the previous book in this series that we were in for one crazy assed ride and boy was I not wrong!!

Six weeks have gone by since Grayson's been on the run from the law, but they won’t recognise the man he is today, brown contacts hide his striking blue eyes, his hair is longer than it was and he makes sure he hides his tattoos which could easily identify him whilst he sets up little false leads to keep the FBI on their toes.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A game of cat and mouse ensues when it is discovered that there is a copycat killer!! A fast paced storyline that pulls all the punches, had me reeling as my mind raced to put the puzzle pieces together.

We're a shadow of each other, fused to one another through pain and pleasure and hedonistic illness that rivals even the greatest serial killer teams. We're a duet-we belong together. One cannot exist without the other.

This was definitely one crazy assed ride, coming off contemporary romances back to back and then jumping on this book took me a while to get used to this author's text book writing style, her use of words as we delve into the intricate mind of a physiological serial killer left me completely enthralled, the way this authors mind works was brilliant as she weaved us on this complex journey with its unpredictable twists and turns, the suspense, thinking she’s going one way only to go off in another direction left me entirely breathless.

“You’re mine, London. We can dance this violent dance until we bleed each other dry, or we can surrender. Your choice. But I will have you.”

This was another wild ride in Trisha Wolfe’s ‘Darkly, Madly’ duet. Though I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the first book, I still thought it was supremely well written and captivating. I just am not sure if these super dark books are for me, or maybe I wasn’t in the mood? Either way it kept my attention and I would recommend it to anyone who loves psychological thrillers and doesn’t mine some blood and gore. I feel this one focused way too much on the murder storyline and not enough on the romance for me.

Woohoo this was the 150th book to complete my reading challenge this year! And what a great book to do that with too.

This was so friggin mind blowing. Loved it so much!

I had no idea where it would go. Every page was fresh and intricately written. It was more plot driven and I couldn’t get enough. I had my ass on the edge of my seat almost all the time.

Grayson was the star of the show. His devotion to London… if I don’t have that I don’t want it.

London made me so happy In this book bc she really stepped up her game. I loved her darker side and this whole book was such a psychological game and I lapped it up.

The last 30% had my heart racing out of my chest and falling to my feet. I swear there were times where I hated EVERYONE for being so dumb despite their high IQs.
<<< But I still love Grayson 🤸🏻‍♀️>>>

I was this close 🤏 to crying a couple chapters before it ended. The dam was about to break. My chin was wobbling. Eyes getting glassy. The whole works. And I really thought…!!

Whew I’m glad for the ending bc it would’ve sliced me open right there if it was any different.

Trisha Wolfe, cough up the money. You’re paying for my therapy bills because I definitely have some damage control to do.

𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲:
I still want to know how she manipulates the guy who killed himself (the tape on the usb…?)

𝗙𝗮𝘃 𝗤𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

“If she only realized just how much control she has over me…the damage she could do.”
~💘🦋

“Agony is the loss of her touch.”
~poetic 🥲

“I was designed to kill…not love.
She’s destroyed me.”

wtf...............WTF!!!!

My heart was just ripped out, smashed and then pieced right back in perfectly, all in what like 20 minutes. TRISHA WOLFE amazes me. The psychological aspect of her writing is so detailed, the actions done and emotions shown by the characters are justified so damn well. She undoubtedly knows how to play with feelings and endings. if this did not end the way it did, I would've sued you fr

It started off pretty good and even though it started feeling kinda draggy towards the middle but pushing through this was totally worth it because that ending gave me my damn life back.

The last chapters- OMG - the pain and anxiety it caused me, my heart was beating like i was being chased by a killer myself, my nails were literally digging moons into my palms like I was this 🤏 close to skipping it and just reading the epilogue to get over with it.

London completely stole the show here by taking all the reins in her hands. I loved how she was the one to guide them towards their endgame like a queen.

"Amid our Folie à deux—our madness shared by two—I am the dominant."

Somebody pair up London Noble and Lana Myers, then this invincible duo can take down all the bad guys together.

Grayson was as usual poetic, obsessive understanding and swoon worthy. Everything he speaks, I want it printed on my walls 🦋😩

"I am lured. Completely. She owns my entire being. Flesh and bone. My black soul belongs to her."

"She’s fire and life. She brings color to my world. I’ve been waiting a lifetime for her without even realizing she was the missing part of me. Flesh of my flesh."

"Black or not, dead or not…my heart beats because of her."

London and Grayson are true soulmates. Their insanity, chemistry, understanding, devotion and obsession with each other is everything. ffs how do I get this shit irl?!?!?!

“I see you,” I whisper against her lips. “I could feel your pain from fucking miles away. I know what you need.” I capture her mouth, crushing our lips together. I drown out the world and its threats—the fear, the pain—with one kiss.

“If it’s affecting you, we make time.”

4 this is a crazy duology stars

“Love is pain.
Real love—the one not spewed in poetry—is agony.
It tears at your soul, strips you bare, drives you mad and demands the veracity of our existence.
Love is madness.”

I need therapy after reading this crazy ass duology. Not only because of that but also because I was really shipping the couples and wanting them to get away with every batshit crazy things they did.

The plot? Fantastic.
The last 4 chapters? It blew my mind in a way that I was not fucking expecting and I loved it.
The couple? I’m questioning my sanity and morals because I really liked the interaction between them. In their one toxic, problematic, super unhealthy way they made me really ship them. I need to see a doctor.
The writing? Damn this woman can write! I was captivated from start to finish.

Like the first one, this was completely fucked up in an awesome crazy way. And I definitely recommend for who liked the first book.

This just surprised me in many ways. There wasn’t a dull moment in this. It was a book where we discover more about the characters and I really liked that. And there were even some humorous moments in this or perhaps it was just my dark weird humour for things that aren’t funny at all.

Overall this is a duology that I will not forget soon. And that definitely will make me question my stated of mind for a while.

TW: violence, death, torture, murder, child abuse, attempted rape and schizophrenia.

Born, Darkly Book #1 - 5 Stars / Born, Madly Book #2 - 4.5 Stars

“You’re mine, London. We can dance this violent dance until we bleed each other dry, or we can surrender. Your choice. But I will have you.”

Dark, twisted, exciting and highly intelligent. This is not a romance; this is a highly messed up and grim love story under extremely deadly circumstances. Gritty, raw, ugly and psychologically thrilling; we were riveted. This duet is one where your thoughts and morals will be provoked, where at times you have to suspend belief and roll with the proverbial punches. It’s manic yet so good. It’s not for the faint of heart.

‘I’m tethered so tightly to him, I can feel him in my veins. He’s poison in my blood. I’m drunk on him.’

London and Grayson were two very complex characters. Both haunted by their respective horrific past which has resulted in deadly and significant damage on who they are as people. It was so upsetting and disturbing and so bloody tragic. London is a renowned criminal psychologist with a fascination into the brain of the seriously depraved, looking for answers and in some ways almost trying to find herself.

‘…you feast on their horror stories in the name of psychology. You feed off them, satiating your own twisted curiosities. And then you publish your papers on the poor damned souls that never had a chance. You reap glory off the murderers and from the victims themselves.’

Whilst she’s living and carrying on, she’s not truly understanding who she is after a childhood that was every bit as terrifying as her clients are. Clients she evaluates, diagnoses and testifies for in the court of law. The day Grayson Sullivan -the notorious vigilante serial killer- is brought into her office paths are changed. Everything changes. Everything!

‘How much can the mind endure? Even when you know the disaster is coming, you can’t look away. We’re a little sick like that.’

The Angel of Maine; a man who satisfies his wickedness by killing those who in turn hurt others. Some would support him in getting rid of the dregs of society others don’t believe in an eye for an eye. It’s a very interesting debate. What shapes us into the adults we become? How much emotional and traumatic pain can a human being withstand? How do we justify our actions and understand why we make them?

‘Love is pain. Real love – the one not spewed in poetry – is agony. It tears at your soul, strips you bare, drives you mad and demands the veracity of our existence. Love is madness.’

We don’t do spoiler reviews so we have purposely not said too much about the story other than you’ll not want to put it down. Do heed the trigger warnings though as there’s so many subject matters covered that may upset you. Trisha Wolfe’s writing is superb and extremely evocative. The words causing a disturbing explosion onto the pages. This duet was riveting.

‘We were not born the day we took our first breath. We were born the moment we stole it.’

Look at me, couldn't stay away for long 🤡 But honestly, how could I resist a man so romantic as Grayson 🥰

"Manipulation is like foreplay to you."
I chuckle. "I'm sorry, next time I'll give you flowers."

And be honest, who needs flowers from someone who can build a torturous death trap machine anyway?

This is not me writing a review, just saying goodbye to a great, dysfunctional couple 💕

Great conclusion ish to this dark, psychological, sexy thriller

I say ish because I also downloaded the bonus epilogue… which shows us what Grayson and London’s life is like months after the epilogue from the duet ends.

This book continues from where book one left off, which is when Grayson escapes. London had to continue life after she held a press conference detailing the deaths of all those young girls that her abductor of a father killed. She’s also in the midst of her repressed feelings because of the death of her sister and figuring out her true identity, the one before she was kidnapped.

In the meantime, there’s a copy cat killer that is mimicking Grayson‘s MO. There are times when London questions who’s killing these other victims, but it becomes clear that it isn’t Grayson. Now, Grayson and London must work together to figure out who this copycat is and to continue uncovering the passions that continually underline their relationship.

Oh their dark passion continues🔥. Jeeeezus🔥… it IS dark and sexy and so raw and PRIMAL🥵. Gah. With a damn breath, I felt their passionate obsession with each other😅, with explosive chemistry and electrifying tension that had me glued to my kindle😉. Their connection is soul deep, unlike anything either of them experienced before, which transcends obstacles, shoot even the law. They’re two magnets that continually gravitate towards each other, and nothing will prevent them from being together👏🏻.

Soooo good! Gah! It could be steamier, but damn, the smexy times were just enough to satiate my smutty tastes. The twists, the turns, the dirtiness, the heat were perfection. Loved it

Have I mentioned before that I hate when I give a book a low rating? I honestly don’t even like leaving reviews for them because the author gave their all to this book and here I am talking trash about it. (Actually, I try really hard not to talk trash about any book. I just feel like trash when talking about a book I don’t like.)

For the reason above, I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. I read book one and didn’t really care for it. I gave it a GENEROUS three stars because I like the protagonist’s story line. However, that pretty much ended in book one along with that version of the protagonists. I read the first five chapters – fully devoted. Then I couldn’t stomach it anymore and decided to skim. I typically don’t rate or review books I don’t read fully, but I have to say that I read the MAJORITY of this book and could not immerse myself during any of it. There were no major errors to this book other than the fact that it didn’t grab my attention.

2 stars!

4,5. Acabei esse livro e estou realmente impactada com a mente dessa autora. Ela escreve essa história com tanta precisão e conhecimento que não tem como não ficar vidrada com cada ação.
ADOREI. Sem mais!!!!!!

Love is M A D N E S S

Letteralmente. Be careful.

Unbelievable. I adore this author and her maniacal ways. Review to come.

THIS. This is why I love this author. Right out the gate you’re intrigued and sucked into her madness.

“—what is this maddening thing we call perfection? It’s different for everyone. That one, blissfully high moment of utter and complete satisfaction, of achievement. It’s a sweet glimpse of heaven. A split-second where demons depart and the gates inch open, granting us a limited view of something holy. We have reached the top of the mountain. We have conquered. We reap our reward. Ah, that reward doesn’t come freely. There’s a price. Fear. Let me rip the Band-Aid off.”

Brilliant, cunning, sophisticated and hauntingly beautiful!!!

If words create magic, then Trisha Wolfe is a motherf@cking magician--a master illusionist that tantalizes with gorgeous prose, slays with emotion, depth, and detail, leaving me in awe struck at the power she wields with mere words. Not many authors have the capability, the talent or the grit to garner such a reaction from me but this woman, this sorceress, does it every time. Her dark matches my dark and her words own my soul.
"Good things don’t emerge from basements and cellars… Dark things do." ~Grayson

Born, Madly and the Darkly, Madly Duet is an epic masterpiece that follows the relationship of two souls born of impossible circumstances, thrust into a world they can’t possibly survive, shouldn’t survive, but damn if they don’t try. And what a breathtaking, twisted experience it is.
‘We’re a fucked-up kind of inevitability. Not fated. Doomed.” ~Grayson

"A finality with a standing ovation."~Grayson

I’m so very sad to see this duet come to an end but I am excited to see what other magic this author has up her sleeve.

Trisha Wolfe does it again. I'm blown away by her twisty, dark mind. Grayson and London are incredible!! You have to read the first book of the duet to get the full story, but damn it is so worth it. This roller coaster held me captive from the first page to the last.

Whenever I pick up a book by Trisha I know I'll never be disappointed. She brings the tension, emotion, and just twists you up in a mind f*ck you never see coming! Well written, breathtaking, and utterly delicious. The Darkly, Madly Duet is a must read and on my list of top ten for 2018!

“My sick matches your sick”

Born, Madly continued were Born, Darkly left off. This one felt more like a character study and less like a Romance.

We spent most of the time in the characters' heads thinking about how their brain works, and that might be interesting for the first 2 hours, but it gets a little tiresome toward the end.
However, I still enjoyed the psychological aspect enough to finish the book.

What we got romance-wise was good, but it could've been more & better developed. I liked the characters more, but like in part one, I didn't care ENOUGH about them.

Overall, the Darkly, Madly Duet was an interesting read and if you like suspenseful stories with psychological themes, check it out :)

Seems like I'm stuck reading duets this year, but I'm not complaining at all.

She loved him...to the brink of death.

Firstly let's start with giving credit to the author because Wolfe can spin a damn good story.
Now on to the said story. Welp this was a one wild ride. We have our criminal (H) Grayson Sullivan aka Angel of Maine. But don't let the title fool you, he ain't no angel, and the lilac key to his lock Dr.London Noble (h). The book continues to tell us Grayson and London's story.

The story is dark and twisted just like the deranged characters but compelling and captivating, nonetheless.
The writing is absolutely magnificent.
Sexual tension between the characters is off the charts. These criminals had me rooting for them throughout the story-does that make me unhinged too?  lmao
At the same time I also really loved when London stood up for herself and didn't let any asshole boss her around.

Though the duet isn't heavy on the spice factor and has only a few sex scenes, nevertheless I didn't mind that at all. I also wanted a little more insight on Graysons childhood even though we did get to know a little about that at the end few chapters through London's pov but I still wanted to know more through Grays pov.

Overall the duet is a masterpiece of great puzzles perfectly aligned togeather.

3.5 ⭐️

So I started this duet earlier this year. The first book was absolutely intoxicating and thrilling. This is a psychological thriller / romance. Its dark, twisty and one big mind game. I don’t recommend this for anyone who does not like dark themes or dark romance.

I think what had me hooked in this series is just the psychological aspect of it all. I felt like I, myself, was apart of one big game throughout the duet. It was thrilling.

The romance is really more of an obsession and as much as a romance as a serial killer and criminal psychologist would get. I went in for the dark romance and stayed for the thriller.

I will say I liked the first book way better and this book fell a little flat for me, but it definitely did not disappoint in the twists and dark turns the duet promised.

If you like psychological thriller, dark romance, and Harley Quinn X Joker , this may very well be for you!

Not gonna lie, I was confused at many points throughout this book because of the utter complexity of it. But I loved it. Though I wouldn't really label this as romance, after reading both books. A psychological thriller would be more accurate. This duet was extremely stimulating for my brain and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about LondonGrayson and all the dark, gory and fucked up parts of their relationship. They're soulmates but in the most messed up way possible. Please make sure you are aware of all the TWs for this duet because it is DARK and will no doubt have you questioning yourself.

~Combined review for Book 1 and 2 ~

I have a lot to say about this duet cuz I've been trying to read it for about a week now and given that I am a relatively fast reader, the maximum amount of time a duet takes me is a day.... maybe a day and half if it's too long or i am unbelievably busy. This is why it has been driving me crazy that I keep picking this story up and putting it down again and again.
I finished it (I am stubborn and self-destructive like that🙃) but I also skimmed a lot of the 2nd book cuz I just couldn't take it. So here we go:

Pros:

- The storyline was good. In both the books. A criminal psychologist and a SAW inspired serial killer engage in a battle of minds while making and falling in love. Sign me the fuck up! 🖤
Hell, for me, that's usually like heaven with my favourite meals and hot half-naked men feeding me those meals!

- The characters were complex, perfectly imperfect and so so dark and delicious. I loved that they tried their mind games, manipulative tactics and deception skills on each other to have dominance in the relationship....maybe even to test one another. I am A BIG BIG fan of mind games.

Especially loved London's perspective to everything ...she constantly analysed stuff. She was even a lot relatable. Especially here....

I huff out a breath. “I’m interested in the study of people, not in what they can do or be in relation to me, I clarify. I simply prefer to analyze them rather than pursue an intimate relationship.”

Also, I found it immensely amazing (dark smirk) how Grayson could twist words and phrases and take a conversation in the direction HE wanted it to go. Just loved it. 🖤

Now the cons :

- The dark parts were....eh. The darkness in this book didn't lie in the torture parts (In truth, I've witnessed much darker stuff in somewhat contemporary novels) but it lied in the characters.

- Grayson kept telling Everyone and their distant fucking relatives that London was a dark goddess who could snap people's minds like twigs by using their psychosis and phobia against them....blah, blah and fucking blah. I didn't see it anywhere!! (Except for that scene in book 2 where she goes to visit Becky ....but even that was incredibly short and not enough) There could've been atleast one scene where it was shown how London got killers to commit suicide after they left her "care".
Everything in regards to London's murderous nature was told, rather than shown which I found disconcerting...and frankly, a bit unbelievable.
Yes, London was sharp as a psychologist, always cataloguing people's minds,.....she was a narcissistic sociopath which helped her gain an apathetic distance from people and make her dark. But aside from that, I didn't find her that much deserving of a love from a psychopathic serial killer. 🤷

- It had more of a psych thriller feel to it than a romance.

- NOW THE BIGGEST KICKER- The reason I wished I should've dnf'd this book at 40%!
The writing style was so weird, vague, overly poetic and off-putting....AND BORING AS FUCK! I couldn't get immersed in the story because the execution of it made it boring to the point I wanted to kill the characters by dumping their bodies in a container of sulphuric acid. Ha! (Yes, I liked them...even still)

Also, it was poetic in a "I just ruminated on a point so hard and wrote everything that came to mind about it and I got lost" sort of way. It was like the author was droning on and on about a particular metaphor while dropping heavy phrases and psych words in it.......it all became too much.

And that's coming from the girl who loves reading authors like Pepper Winters, Calia Read and Catherine Wiltcher (they have the most beautifully poetic writing I've seen).

- I can swear I tried so hard with this story......I've never done that before ....I always just dnf. But I was so excited for the story cuz , like I said before, the premise is one I love. I would love a criminal psychologist and serial killer falling in live while playing mind games with each other. If I sound sad here, it's cuz I am.

This is also why I am personally so disappointed! I mean, the potential of this ...the sheer potential is so big and beautiful, i can't even fathom. So the "what it could've been" is actually haunting me.

Should've just DNF'd. Sigh.

Help me decide if I should give other books by this author a try? Please?

I have nothing more to add that I haven’t said in the review for the book one in the duet, other that it’s one of my favorite dark reads of all times. It’s incredibly well written, such a twisted and clever story. Not a word out of place.
How is this author not more popular than she is? Why am I hearing about her only in 2021?
This story gives you creeps and kisses you better all at the same time. So amazing.

*Edited to add. Covers of both books does not do them justice. They are alright, but it’s not what they suggest. When I started the first book, I thought it will be a sort of push and pull type of romance, on a darker side. It’s not. Don’t go into this thinking you’ll get just some f@ck here and there. You’ll get your mind messed with. Those are the best types of books :).

This duet was crazyyyy, so fast paced 👏🏼 a lot happened in this duet but it didn’t feel incomplete or rushed

Whilst you do have to really suspend your beliefs (the premise is somewhat far fetched) it’s actually a fantastic story to get lost in, and have fun with
It really delves into the minds of serial killers and how they work, it’s dark & twisted, and very psychological which I loved

It lost me a bit in the first half but, I absolutely could not put the book down in the last half (currently writing this at 1am because I needed to know how it all ends before I sleep haha)

Also, impeccable writing as always from Trisha 🤌🏼✨
