A Bollywood State of Mind

Rate this book
Like all Indians, Sunny Singh was born and brought up in a country of film fanatics. She and her friends waited impatiently for the latest releases, listened to the songs on radio and wore clothes inspired by those seen on screen. They learned about India and the world, determined their enemies and friends, and chose their moralities thanks to films.

A Bollywood State of Mind is a personal, intellectual and emotional journey which crosses five continents and 50 years of modern Indian history and cinema and explores why Bollywood means so much to so many across the globe. Sunny describes how this exceptional cinema retains its hold on the national imagination, how Bollywood has enhanced India’s global standing in the 21st century, and how its characteristics endure despite the social and political changes.

Ranging over history, aesthetic theory and politics, A Bollywood State of Mind explores encounters with Bollywood in the market places of Dakar and Marrakesh, in the nightclubs of New York, Barcelona and Mexico City, and in the ruins of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, Petra and beyond. It shows how the pioneers and heroes of Bollywood cut across national, linguistic and cultural lines not only in India but in far reaches of Somalia, Peru, Malaysia and Russia.

• If you love Bollywood movies and love to talk about the Bollywood industry you'll love this movie 🎬 . The author Sunny Singh describes her own experience in this book. How Bollywood cinema expands through its 50 years of journey and contemplates Western society remarkably. 🍁

• A movie is not only about watching and watching the plot but it's about the fact that it changes the psychological, political, and emotional patterns of an institution. Bollywood, a globally acclaimed industry, is so vast that no one can find its beginning to its end. 🌤️

• This insightful book takes you to history and makes you visit the world. The Bollywood songs themselves play a fascinating role in this industry. Though for me they're a pure sensation, they're about to change the way of living for some individuals. ✨

• Culture, memoirs, memories, history, politics, adventure, thriller - all in one are impacted in a cinema. This is so amazing when you find your favorite actors or actresses in a writing 📝 . This book is well-researched and well-written. Language is easy and interesting to read.

• I would recommend this book to every Bollywood fan and critics also. I'm not a fan of this type of books but I loved the writing and the descriptions. This would be my 3.7 star book. (Out of 5).

This book is a unique piece of art. Though I don't usually read books related to the film industry, I enjoyed every page here. It was like... nothing I have ever come across before. It felt like the life of the author was poured out in the pages. It all starts at the very beginning when she was a little girl and Cinema has entered India. Talking you through her journey of growing up as a vagabond, her neverending love towards the movies and the reflections of it all shaping her life.

The book triggered nostalgia at its best as it took you through our historical points (the British colonization, the fight for freedom, the war, the emergency, etc.) while also talking about the emerging presence of Bollywood in the world. And as much as I would love to say the entire book enchanted me in its "yaadon ki baraat", I have a few favourite points that I felt were much needed to be discussed:
• The sense of alienation in Western cinema
• Regulations on Anti-colonial messaging
• The talks about SRK and Amitabh ji
• The significance of 1983 in her life
• Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

I recommend this book to not just Bollywood fans, but also to people who want to understand the journey of Indian cinema from a non-fiction angle.
Thank you @harpercollinsin and @profsunnysingh for the ARC.

A Bollywood State of Mind by Sunny Singh documents five decades of modern Indian history and Bollywood Cinema. Sunny Singh, alike many other Indians, has been influenced by Bollywood Cinemas since Childhood. It not only shaped her ethics and morality to choose her friends and foes but also highly impacted her lifestyle. In this book she tries to record a blend of her personal life and the transformation of Bollywood cinema amid all the social changes.

The book begins when the narrator is just around eight years old in 1977. She describes the vital political events as well as their outcomes in Indian society before moving forward to talk about a few eminent filmmakers of Bollywood like Manmohan Desai, Nasir Hussain, Hrishikesh Mukherjee as well as Gulzar. She describes how Stardust and Binaca Geetmala was an important thing to the people. After describing few personal events on a canvas of social events, gradually, the narrator describes how she made her mind to do a PhD in Film Studies.

In each chapter, the author describes a remarkable events or experiences along with her own position in that time as a back drop to her historical analysis of Bollywood cinema. She not only provides her valuable insights on the movies and time but also records reception of the audience of that time. While reading, a reader is bound to teleport to that era to experience those magnificent events. The book captures evolution of Bollywood cinema. It shows how it sustains its own carisma over the years despite going through many socio-political changes. It transforms but never loses it glory. It endures but keeps its magical traits enough to mesmerized people. The spontaneity of the description and the easy writing style keep readers hooked from the very first chapter. The book feels like a memoir. The author's personal experiences make readers feel more connected. Overall, A Bollywood State of Mind takes you to a romantic journey through the vintage events of history in which one learns a lot about the film fanatics and their country, India.

Thank you Harper Collins India for this gifted copy.

Didn’t work for me. Read more like an academic thesis. May be it is not meant for the average bollywood observer but for students of cinema and film critique. Avoidable.

Cinema stands as an influential conduit to connect with the masses, a formidable force that, while potentially threatening to those in power, remains a source of entertainment and emotional resonance for the general public. The art of storytelling, a captivating element of society, knits together our understanding of the world, people, and our collective past.

This comprehensive exploration, akin to a thesis, delves into the cinematic realm, proving to be a treasure trove for enthusiasts of storytelling and cinema alike. From the nascent days of global and Indian cinema to its contemporary evolution, the narrative unfolds in a concise yet intricately detailed manner, compelling readers to flip through pages in pursuit of deeper insights.

Interwoven with the author's personal experiences, reflections on colonization, and observations on the changing landscape of cinema across different periods and major political events, the narrative becomes both engaging and relatable. The simplicity of language facilitates an enjoyable and lucid journey through the 240 pages, which, due to a spacious layout and larger font size, could easily equate to 315 pages. However, the narrative style, though satisfying, leaves the reader yearning for more exploration.

Each chapter is thoughtfully titled after a song, while footnotes provide clarity for those less familiar with the discussed topics. The inclusion of a reference material list at the end caters to the ardent readers eager to delve deeper. Overall, this cinematic odyssey offers a fantastic exploration of the evolution of Indian cinema – from narrating stories rooted in Hindu Puranic Katha and portraying legendary figures like Harishchandra and Shri Ram to depicting the diverse spectrum of challenges and desires faced by the average Indian.

Without a doubt, this journey is a must for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the profound love for movies embedded in our hearts.

From the very first page I was enamoured by A Bollywood State of Mind. It's richly evocative descriptions brought on waves of nostalgia as I was transported back to key moments in my married life where my husband and I watched some of the mentioned films together.
As well as being an impassioned description of the Bollywood film industry, past present and future, A Bollywood State of Mind is also an artfully written narrative which contextualises the political, cultural and economic influences on the industry through the eyes of the author growing up. Insights into historic events through the eye of the author and her family lend a poignant and additional layer to this excellent read.

Thoroughly enjoyable, very informative and delivered with humanity, hope, understanding and appreciation of an often underrated, yet very complex art form.
I felt privileged to read this.

This is a beautifully written and a very insightful book for all cinema lovers. Many have said before me and I can’t deny it, that it is the ULTIMATE Bollywood book.

A Bollywood State of Mind is a personal, intellectual and emotional journey through the lens of Prof Sunny Singh which crosses five continents and 50 years of modern Indian history and cinema. It shows how Bollywood means so much to so many across the globe and also explores the reasons behind it.

Being an Indian, this book is now very close to my heart. I read very few books by Indian author, I read very few books written about India, and I read very few books that are non-fiction. So, if you are like me, give this book a try and you won’t be disappointed.

This book was very enjoyable and informational. Absolutely loved the content of the book as well as how it was written.

This book is a gem! As a White American this was a very informative book about the Hindi film industry and it's origins, as well as the experiences of Hindi cinema through the eyes of Indians. This was truly a "journey". The author uses her own experiences in her travels as a way to guide the narrative and explain different film's tropes and narratives, and ties it all together using the staying power of the songs. If you've ever been interested in understanding what Hindi movies mean to Indians, READ THIS BOOK.

Loved this book, even though I know little about Bollywood. Prof. Singh is a noted academic but this personal memoir flows along like the fascinating reminiscences of a really interesting new friend. I discovered the book by following her on X and I'm glad I did. You'll see several continents and decades through new and observant eyes.

Found this really dry, disappointing, and disjointed. Not sure how a dull book could be written on something as exciting as Bollywood, but this manages it.

Sunny Singh’s book is part cultural commentary, part memoir, and part analysis of the world’s largest film industry, and thank god for the former two because the analysis is quite dully described. At no point did I find myself even remotely interested in the elements that make up a cinema I have grown up consuming, so whenever Singh goes back to a film from her childhood, or describes an experience from the vacations she made back home, the book becomes instantly more interesting and also serves as a text through which the evolution of Hindi cinema comes across.

There were a few factual errors in the book but I loved every second and devoured each page in a way that no one can really understand. I love Bollywood and this book and it made me question my thesis and my anthro topic.
