The story is much darker than I expected. I went in without knowing what the novel was about and thought that it was going to be a slice of life story. And how wrong I was 😂 if you’ve read Korean BL manhwas where the MC is a poor guy who’s down on his luck, and the ML is this rich and cold businessman or gangster, then this story is what those BL manhwas aspire to be.

Yin Han (MC) and Cheng Jingshen (ML) have an age gap of 12 years and they first meet when YH is 17 years old. From this information alone, I thought that YH was sure to be taken advantage of by CJS, and indeed he was. However, he also approached CJS with his own reasons and motivations, and he willingly accepted the abuse that CJS inflicted on him. And I’m not saying that CJS isn’t a scumbag because he is, for many reasons, besides him getting into a sexual relationship with YH when he’s still a minor. However, both characters are not as clear cut as they seem and more of their backstories get revealed as the plot develops.

I think the author did a good job with developing their relationship because it was significant in moving the plot along. There were many nuances to YH and CJS’s relationship and everything was done in a way that didn’t disrespect the characters and their relationship. I also liked that CJS regretted how he treated YH at first and he wasn’t afraid to lay down his pride and grovel for YH’s forgiveness. And YH had a backbone and didn’t immediately forgive him either. It really showed that the author cared about these characters and their development. Both characters changed a lot as they spent more time together and understood each other, and it can be seen that they each left indelible marks on each other.

It’s not your typical wife chasing crematorium story because CJS definitely fell in love with YH first and although they have an age gap, after the breakthrough in their relationship, most of the time, CJS was the first to concede to YH. Which means that yes, CJS transformed into a believer with YH as his god. It is a top tier relationship development and I really liked how both of them were crazy enough that they complemented each other perfectly. They have a strong love for each other that was forged through the numerous challenges they faced in the 7 years they were together and I’m glad they have a happy ending.

This is also one of the few danmei novels where I enjoyed reading the smut scenes. They were steamy and sometimes dangerous, and even though at first it was mostly painful for YH because CJS was testing him, after CJS realised how he felt about YH, he became much… nicer? And YH also became more enthusiastic about their sexy time together so it was a good experience not only for them but for the reader too.
