穿越成被影帝抛弃的炮灰 [Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Abandoned by the Movie Star]

Rate this book
Gu Qingchi transmigrated into an insignificant cannon fodder. The author didn’t set any of the details of the cannon fodder’s character settings, so everything was randomly generated.

Then, somehow, he ended up becoming the most beautiful person in the entire novel.

However, it didn’t matter. As a cannon fodder with two sentences in the book i.e. Marriage & Divorce, he is unable to leave the barest trace in the world till the divorce! His existence was forgotten & he was left completely isolated.

Gorgeous beyond measure, after finishing the cannon fodder storyline, Gu Qingchi could debut by relying on his face alone.

When the well-known movie star’s love affair was exposed, his fans were furious and ready to take this guy down, but ended up being captivated by his beauty.

I argued with myself for a good five minutes trying to decide if this story deserved 2 stars or 5. After reminding myself to not only linger on the good, I compromised with 3 stars.

How could a story make me simultaneously want to rate it less than mid and also the best? Well, it's because what this story did well, it did incredibly well, but what it dropped the ball with was significant, too.

Why it's subpar:
The author's prose is not sophisticated by any measure. This might be a fault that can largely be put on the shoulders of the translator. However, even if the translator didn't do great, that wouldn't excuse the excessive amount of sentences devoted entirely to reiterating how the main character is beautiful. The wording of it isn't even changed up; every few paragraphs, there will be another mention of how praise-worthy the main character's face and comportment is. Not only does this get tedious for the reader, it also is a disservice to the main character who does have a personality, aspirations, and talents; despite being the one who set those other worthy traits, the author laser-focuses on his physical beauty.

I really want to shake the other and demand they reexamine their priorities. They created such an interesting concept, and then let it devolve into a dime-a-dozen sort of transmigration-into-a-book story.

Why it's really good:
Unlike the normal transmigrating-as-a-background-character story, this novel doesn't have its world operate in the way a real but alternate world would. Instead, it reinforces the fact that the setting is indeed a book, and there are restrictions in place that our main character, Gu Qingchi, has to deal with as a sentient background character. As far as I'm aware, this sort of setting is entirely unprecedented.

In the usual novel, the main character arrives in their new body and is there-on-the-spot free to live as a normal person; in THIS novel, Gu Qingchi arrived during a point where his character is entirely unknown to the at large, no more than a few words in someone else's backstory, and he had to live an existence where reality itself rejected anything he did the that could change that. [None of this is spoiler, by the way; all of this is explained within the beginning of the first chapter.] The story we read is about Gu Qingchi overcoming the trauma of being essentially non-existent while still be perfectly aware of every second of it, entirely isolated for years, and then moving forward after being freed from those restrictions. This is an extremely heavy and moving topic, and explores the transmigration genre in ways no one really considered to do before.

Also in a unique approach, this novel also presents the question of HOW transmigration into a book works. The mechanics of it is usually glossed over, just accepted as, "Yes, it's a thing; next," but here we actually think over the implications. How did the book reality come to be? How does it take transmigrators away from their original reality? What happens to the reality the transmigrator came from afterward? In generated alternate realities, exactly how real are the other people in the world?

In summary:
This novel has two really strong concepts to support itself, and yet the author just doesn't have the skill to execute it. I don't know how old the author is or was when they wrote this, but it gives me the impression of a child with a wonderful imagination that just doesn't have the dexterity yet to actually draw the images in their head they're so eager to share. Rather than a fully-realized novel, it feels more like a first-draft.

If you're willing to put up with milquetoast prose and constant reminders that Gu Qingchi is pretty, I'd say it's a worthy read. I was brought to tears of number of times despite the flaws.

This novel took a different approach to the transmigration trope and it was interesting to see how Gu Qingchi (MC) was cut off from the outside world for 2 years until he completed his role as the cannon fodder. It was unsurprising that he ended up with depression and I think the author did a pretty good job with tackling this topic in a nuanced way. Due to the nature of the MC's character set up, the story isn't like other face-slapping plots set in the entertainment world. In fact, this was a bit more lowkey and laid-back. It was more of a slice of life novel honestly.

I liked the development of his relationship with Xie Luyu (ML) because they went through the good times and bad times together. XLY choosing GQC time and time again is a testament to how devoted he is to his lover and I absolutely love that in a ML. Initially, XLY definitely loved GQC more than GQC loved XLY but with time and healing, they became equally enamored with each other. I also liked how GQC finally reunited with the family that he lost. It took a while but every moment spent with his family was heartwarming. Both XLY and GQC's family were tantamount to his recovery and I liked how they were patient and considerate of him, they never blamed him nor judged him for having depression, and they did their best to be there for him because they loved him and they wanted him to be okay again.

I did kind of find it funny at first that literally everyone found GQC to be the most beautiful person on earth and that this novel was basically him getting pretty privilege, but then again, it was already stated in the beginning that he was god's favourite. And it isn't until it was revealed in the side stories that a god did fall in love with GQC, and when GQC tragically died in a traffic accident, that god's grief was so strong that it altered the world and came up with an alternative universe. And you know who that god is? XLY. Or something like that 😂

So this story has plot holes obviously and the pacing was sometimes good, sometimes a little off. However, I think GQC's character development was written quite well and the author did their best at shedding light on the struggles that people with depression have. Not only that they showed that recovery was possible and GQC eventually got a happy ending, which I was glad to read about. But if you're looking for a more exciting story that focuses on a character's journey in becoming the top artist in the entertainment world, then this novel is not for you.

This book started out good, I was so close to dropping it still it had potential
But 90% of this book is about how beautiful he is. How he has to do nothing to uphold it and how everyone looks at him when he enters the room. Normally I just skip over stuff like that when it gets to annoying but I never had to skip several pages or even one chapter. Not just that it gets boring like wtf.
I thought ok maybe for the representation of depression but nahhh. Like it’s not worth it

It got better for a few chapters but than it went down hill again

This is a unique story not typical of entertainment danmei. It touch more on depression issue and I think the author did well in this area. The extra give plot twist that I didn’t expect, especially when in chapter 1 it’s say GQC is god’s favourite, the author really mean it. The first half is just lite reading to build up the story, and I like the second half more when things start to get real. Great story.
