Immediately, no.😐 This style of storytelling is boring, annoying, and too much showing. The only reason I finished this book was because I listened to it to fall asleep.😒
Angelina never ceases to amaze me! I love every book that I've read by her and this one is no exception. The character development is on point and the world building is just phenomenal! I absolutely cannot wait for book 2!
Quick-paced and fluently written, this book introduces you to a new layer of this world, the one where ethereal Lightbringers and Shadowbringers bargain for you soul. The concept is something new, something I haven't seen in other books I've read. The angel part is integrated nicely, without the wings and the obviousness about it. The main characters feel so real, sometimes you get the feeling you're standing between them and you're part of their conversation. You get to know Laney, Jo and Leon, hopefully in the next book we'll get some more of Cas' POV, because I get the feeling there is a whole story to him we don't know yet. And what about Leon, can he really be trusted? I don't know, he's just giving me some bad vibes, so I'll guess we'll have to find out in the sequel. One minor thing I didn't like so much about Laney: somewhere at the beginning of the book she's watching Vampire Diaries with Jo, complaining how Elena doesn't take control of her life and is just being torn between the two brothers Salvatore... And while Laney's story continues, I can't but see the similarities between her and Elena... Hopefully she'll get a bit more independent throughout the series.
Thank you for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow what a unique YA read!! I REALLY like the concept of reapers. It took me a bit to get into the book, probably because the characters are teenagers and I had trouble relating to Laney and Leon. Cas is a different story and i hope we get a lot more Cas in book 2 👀
The first 50% of the book was a little slower paced, but it was super mysterious and kept me guessing what was going to happen next. Look forward to reading the sequel this Spring! 😊✨
Thanks Angelina for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Always such a delight to escape into the worlds you build for us!!

The life of Laney Dawson changes the moment her grandmother dies. What she thought to be impossible, is actually very real. Around her are creatures that bargain for souls when they die, the Lightbringers and Shadowbringers who take the souls either to heaven or hell, and Laney is becoming one of them.
Torn is the first in the Breath of Fate series, a young adult paranormal romance about a girl that is caught between the allure of darkness and light. The style of the story felt original to me because I haven’t read a book about people who bring souls to heaven or hell before so I can’t compare it with anything else. The pace of the story is slow but I feel like that’s what makes the book special because the things aren’t rushed, they take their pace to develop along the pages which makes the story even more intriguing.
The book does begin with a plot twist which I found it a little bit weird until I kept on reading and I realized that the plot at the beginning, has nothing to do with what’s happening in the rest of the book. The events aren’t predictable at all, if you think something is going to go a certain way you’ll be surprised at how the events develop and you’ll be in for a really bumpy ride and left gasping more than once.
The plot twists are strategically placed along with the story that makes this book have a hint of mystery. You’re always left believing something else than what actually is going on until it is actually happening. While reading I always had this feeling that the book is hiding something way more than we’re being shown or told, it was that feeling in the back of my mind that something will happen in the book, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
What I liked was that the events were shown from different perspectives, from Laney’s perspective, from Cas and Leon which are our 3 characters that the story revolves around them which gives you more perspective about each one of them and how most of them aren’t who they say they’re. If you thought Cas’s the biggest evil, you’ll be surprised to find he also has a soft side. If you thought Leon is the best guy ever, you’ll be surprised that he’s not a saint, and Laney, she’s attracted to both sides of good and bad in equal measure. I can’t decide on my favorite part when comes to this book because there were plenty of moments that I liked, but I think one of the events that will stick with me, was when Laney has delivered her first soul to heaven, the description of that place, the feelings the emotions definitely were so strong and so powerful and made me really think on the whole heaven and hell subject.
I really enjoyed the characters, each one of them have been built so perfect and the more you read about them, the more you get to know them from Cas to Leon to Laney, each one of them are trying to do their best in a world where bargaining for souls and recognizing who should go to hell or heaven is a full-time job, on top of their teenager issues. The story is set in our world, except for the heavenly place where the Lightbringers deliver the souls, that place has been described so beautifully that it gave me goosebumps and made me sympathize with Laney who started crying after her first soul delivery. This book has been a really nice relaxing read, and if you’re in for some light and dark battle then this book is definitely for you. It does contain some darker tones here and there, but nothing too trigger’ish, or at least not for me.
Maybe I've been reading the wrong genres but there is a total lack of Reaper novels in the YA space so I appreciated this one off the bat. I wish they were a little bit older and out of school so I didn't have to mentally juggle her class schedule with you know, people dying, because it always came off as so inconvenient to her social life.
Hallmark movies and fantasy novels have taught me to never get attached to the first love interest so I was eyeballing Leon for missteps the entire book even though he was generally ok until his shady dealings came out. Give me a boy who broods but has a tragic back story and I'll jump on his ship ASAP.
I'm excited for the next installment because now she knows the stakes and has something to fight for. I hope she finds someone soon (who doesn't want to date her) that will fill her in on everything she doesn't know yet about the Lightbringers and Shadowbringers so she doesn't get caught between Leon and Cas again.
I received a free review copy of the book which does not affect my review. Thank you for the copy!
Book one of the breath of fate series. I loved reading this book it’s a fascinating twist on angels of death myth and a new fight of good versus evil. I loved the characters Laney, Leon, Jo, Cas. I loved the plot of the story, I loved the genuine realistic qualities of the characters and what they’re going through. I loved the title of torn because it’s a strong element throughout the book Laney torn between her feelings for Leon and the shadowbringer Cas whom She fears for good reason although Cas is torn too because he is after Laney soul but several times he’s had the chance he didn’t take it, Laney’s grans words of warning that include both Cas and Leon be careful who you give your heart too, and honestly both characters of Leon and Cas are shady as hell pun intended, Cas obviously for being a shadowbringer but Although Leon is a lightBringer like Laney and protects and loves her I don’t fully trust his character.I highly recommend reading this book. I picked up this series because I’ve read another awesome angel series by this writer the wings trilogy and loved it so when I came across this book I thought I would give it a go and I’m very glad I did. This book was fantastic I didn’t want to put the book down until I had completely finished it, I loved the twist at the end of the book.
Laney and her childhood best friend Leon have shared a secret for over a year after witnessing a car accident that go to see the souls of departed. However it isn’t until her grans death that her life changes forever. Cas is a shadowbringer he’s job is to collect souls and take them to hell. Laney’s Gran is dying in a nursing home and when she visits bringing Leon she warns her to stay away from him and be careful with who she gives her heart too. Laney starts feeling someone watching her. When her gran passes away her and her mother go to say their goodbyes but Laney is shocked to see two young men invisible to her mother but not her standing over her grans body one is a gray eyed, blueish black hair, dressed in black the other she recognises his blond hair and brown eyes her best friend Leon unaware that he’s a lightbringer whom was fighting to claim her grans soul, the dark guy interested in Laney being able to see them gives Leon the soul stating he owes him. Later that day she sees the same dark guy around, Leon catches up later to her and explains to her that he’s a lightbringer a messenger angel who collects souls and delivers them to heaven, the other was his complete opposite and warns her now she’s in danger because she’s an emerging lightbringer meaning until she fully becomes one and delivers a soul to heaven she’s vulnerable to the shadowbringer who wants to steal her angel sight and soul as a trophy. He protects her and watches over her explaining what they are, he became a lightbringer after his grandfather died, his family are several generations of lightbringers and so is Laney’s however her gran did get to see souls but never became a lightbringer, it skipped her mother but she’s inherited the abilities. Leon and Laney become closer and he starts training her especially with her powers coming in quicker than expected he teaches her to become non corporeal. The shadowbringer is stalking her, at cafes, at her grans funeral and outside her school but she’s constantly protected by Leon, so The shadowbringer once realising he can’t get through Leon to get to Laney becomes a student at her school named Lucas (Cas) Ferham. Although she’s right to fear him, he has opportunities where he corners her alone but doesn’t take it to steal her soul intact he helps her get her best friend jo to the nurse after she collapses at school. Leaving Leon and Laney confused as to why he didn’t steal her soul. Several times he seems hurt by her accusations of being evil and working for hell. Leon takes Laney to his grandfather cabin to look at texts on lightbringers and shadowbringers they’re about to kiss when interrupted by Cas who warns her of grans warning that Leon was also included in the warning. Leon and Laney gradually begin dating and at a Halloween party cas kisses Laney trying to steal her soul but she fights back and wins, before going off and collecting her first soul to heaven which makes her a fully fledged lightbringer meaning he can’t take her soul however he still is stalking her, Cas thoughts are revealed that ge was planning on making her fall in love with him. Jo reveals to Laney why she’s been so sick lately she has chronic kidney disease, and while driving back from doing a good deed they get into a car accident, Laney hears someone telling her to hold on, don’t go. She wakes up in hospital with broken bones, her friend Jo is dead she goes to get her soul but it’s already taken by Cas so she bargains with him offering up her own soul in exchange for releasing Jo’s soul this is exactly what he wanted to further himself in the ranks but he’s clearly reluctant to let her but he does release her friend soul. While she’s taken jo soul to heaven Cas and Leon get into an argument that they had a deal in place that Cas was supposed to take Jo’s soul in exchange for giving up Laney’s gran’s soul however Laney offered up her soul afterwards meaning the debt was paid, it’s also revealed that Cas was the one that held Laney’s hand telling her to hold on and not die. A secret he plans to keep to himself. A surprising twist
Torn, is the first book in the Breath of Fate Series, by Author Angelina J Steffort, and like many of Angelina's other young adult paranormal romance series, brings a unique and exciting perspective to the world of the supernatural.
In this story, Angelina focusses on the human soul's transition in death, and whilst readers may feel there is some predictability with references to the typical heaven, and hell scenario, what differentiates, Torn, from many other books, is the way in which a soul's fate is determined, and then carried to the next phase of their spirit's journey.
Angelina, imaginatively steers the story away from the traditional telling of the angel of death or the classic grim reaper. There is no journey through a mystical tunnel, or stepping into an orb of light, nor is there, the sudden plunge into a pit of fire and brimstone. Torn introduces a simple, and alternative concept.
Earth angels, humans born hosting a divine essence, and consciousness, that separates from the physical body when they feel/sense the call of death. These angels act as a vessel, carrying the soul to its next destination. Once delivered, they then return to their normal, every day, human existence.
But the destination of the deceased is not automatically determined, and where the lines are blurred between good and evil, Angelina, once again, moves away from the traditional story telling. Instead of standing in judgement before the doors of purgatory, it is the two earth angels, the lightbringer, and the shadowbringer, who are called upon together, to determine a soul's fate.
In the time it takes, for the soul to detach from its physical body, the earth angels negotiate, and strike a bargain. They barter for time, the duration a soul must serve in the shadows of hell, and atone, before it can be released and admitted to the light.
In the first book, of the Breath of Fate series, Torn, introduces the protagonist, Laney, whose personal loss acts as a catalyst, and awakens her divine essence. Laney must then learn, and fulfil, her responsibilities as a Lightbringer. But she is not alone. In her captivating world of the supernatural, Angelina, introduces two potential love interests for Laney. One who serves the light, and the other who serves the shadows.
Following Laney's grandmother's final words, before her unexpected demise, the reader is teased throughout, as to which of the two, Laney should entrust her heart to.
It would certainly seem that there is more to come in the subsequent books, and that all is not quite what it appears.
Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed this interesting take on death, and the bartering between heaven and hell, there were elements of the story that caused a disconnect for me, and at one point where I felt I had missed something.
This mainly occurred in the interactions between Laney and the shadowbringer, whom I did struggle at times to relate to. For me, he wasn't quite as credible as the other characters featured. I do feel that the Author could easily correct this by introducing a more detailed back story, and by increasing the number of chapters that are written in his point of view. Whilst this was a little disappointing, it did not spoil my overall enjoyment of the book.
Therefore I am awarding, Torn, a strong 4 Stars.
The Book Dragon Team would like to thank Angelina, again, for sharing her work with us. It is always an absolute pleasure to read.

As wonderful, captivating and heart-breaking as life itself 😊
Angelina J. Steffort’s „Torn“ is an amazing story, that will not only captivate its intended YA audience but anyone with an open heart and an interest in good storytelling. The book is the first in the “Breath of Fate” Series, that offers a very original version of the ‘Angel of Death’ myth. In Steffort’s story Laney (FMC) is a young girl with a hidden secret. For over a year now, she has been able to see the ghost/souls of the recently departed, ever since some freak car accident she was involved in. Unfortunately for Laney, this new ability has made her an outsider, while she struggles to hide it from everybody, except Leon, his childhood best friend, who was with her that night and keeps supporting her no matter what. And then there is Jo, her best friend, who despite of being only human and have her own struggle to manage, stays by her side.
Leon himself also has a secret of his own, one Laney’s grandma seems to be aware of. On Grandma dying bed Laney will make a discovery that will change her own life forever: Angels of Death are very real, and they are tasked to bring the souls of the departed to heaven or hell. Laney herself is one of them, destined to be a Lightbringer who brings souls to heaven. Unfortunately for Laney, until she takes her first soul there, she is also the target for the Shadowbringer Cas, who would love to collect her soul as a trophy. Fortunately, Leon is also a Lightbringer and determined to save her at all costs.
This is a wonderful tale, with much more depth than one will expect from a YA fantasy book. It mixes elements of coming-of-age and teenager angst with the eternal question about actions and consequences and more “Torn” is set in our world, a very real world, Laney’s ability notwithstanding. All characters are beautifully crafted and serve their purpose, highlighting the different aspects of the story. The plot flows effortlessly from the very first page to the end of the book, taking the reader in for a wonderful ride, that will make a lasting impression. ‘Torn’ is lifelike: there is joy, there is fun, despair, tears (both of joy and sadness) and once the characters find a way to your heart, they will linger.
Angelina J. Steffort has an uncanny gift for storytelling and description, bringing effortlessly to life a wide variety of characters, all with their own strengths and flaws, in a fast-paced, nicely flowing highly enjoyable story, with an end that will keep you both satisfied and asking for more…. it’s a gift really 😉
Despite not being one of my go-to genres, I wanted to read Torn anyway, since I am such a fan of another one of Angelina Steffort's series. I am so glad I did, since it was such a fun and satisfying read! Torn follows Laney, who with the help of her friend Leon, deals with the possibility of becoming a Lightbringer, a type of angel. She does this while facing her enemy Cas, a Shadowbringer, one of Hell's own angels, who wants to steal her soul, but seems to be suspiciously helpful as well. This series feels a lot like some of the YA series I really enjoyed in the late 2000s, and definitely has the same feeling as some of them, such as Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush Hush series. It plays with a lot of the same tropes that existed back then, like the lesser enemy being the school's most popular girl, and includes some capitivating tropes that readers (like myself) are commonly interested in now, like romantic tension with the enemy. I am really looking forward to reading the next book, and seeing how some of the issues will resolve themselves. I also found Cas especially interesting, and I'm really curious to see how his charactere will develop. If you're thinking of reading this book I really encourage you to give it a try! I haven't seen a lot of books like this on the market in the last few years and it had a great balance of drama, tension, romance, and action.
Laney Dawson is exposed to a world she never knew existed when her grandmother dies and she sees something she shouldn't be able to see. When her best friend takes her under his wing and tries to show her what she was meant to be, she discovers a heritage she never knew she had and sometimes wishes she didn't. Until she manifests as a lightbringer though, she is on the radar of a shadowbringer, Cas, who is finding that there's more to Laney than he originally realized. The fight begins to show her where she belongs in their world, but as much as she wishes everything was black and white, there is a gray area she can't ignore. And she wonders if she'll escape with her soul.
The nuances this author brings to a story like nothing I've ever read before flow between vivid and subtle like watching waves on the ocean. I switched sides so many times in my mind while reading and am still left wondering which I would choose. I love the way the author gives us enough knowledge that we don't have it all figured out immediately, and she always leaves room for redemption. She is quickly becoming a queen of the ominous cliffhangers, and I am so excited to see where she takes the characters next.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This is the first book in the Breath of Fate series by Angelina J. Steffort. In this book, we follow Laney, Leon, and Cas as Laney discovers just what her sight actually is. She is thrown into a world she didn’t know existed and hardly understands at all. But Laney must learn quick, because her soul is in danger.
The storyline is definitely intriguing. Lightbringers (those who take the souls to Heaven) and Shadowbringers (those who take the souls to Hell) are Steffort’s unique spin on this type of story. The book is paced pretty well, slower at some parts than others but overall it’s good. The characters are well rounded and interesting, definitely makes you want to learn more about them. Overall this world is interesting and I want to know more about it. Some questions were answered, many more left to be answered in later books and I can’t wait to read more. This is one of those books that you can’t, and won’t want to put down. It’ll have you saying “just one more page” or “one more chapter” and before you know it, you will have finished the book and be waiting on the next one!
What an amazing start to a new series. The characters are likable and the world-building is intriguing.
Laney is a shy high school girl who, along with her best friend Leon, witnessed a tragic event where not everything was quite as it seemed. She wants to forget all about it, and Leon is happy to let her until tragedy strikes again, and Laney realizes the world isn’t as normal as she hoped it to be, and neither is she. Now she’s caught not only in the middle of a supernatural world she has to learn to navigate, but between two boys—one a lightbringer, and the other a shadowbringer.
This book has such an interesting take on reapers and the roles and negotiations they play when determining where a soul goes once it leaves the body, that it easily had me turning the pages to find out more. With the twists, turns, and a major jaw-drawing moment, I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to find out what happens next, especially in regards to Cas. I think there is more to him than meets the eye, and I can wait to see how the mystery of his character unravels.
Laney Dawson was a normal girl with a normal life - at least, until she started seeing souls. A year after a deadly car accident, Laney learns that not only do angels exist, but that her best friend, Leon, is one. And when Leon explains the differences between Lightbringers (good beings who bring souls to heaven) and Shadowbringers (evil beings who bring souls to hell) he drops another bomb: Laney herself is a Lightbringer in transition. As Laney struggles to come to terms with who she is becoming, she is plagued by a Shadowbringer named Cas, who wants to steal her soul and take it to hell.
Wow!!! This book was highly addicting and wonderfully written. I got completely drawn into the world Steffort has created. I loved Laney, despite all the bad things happening all around her, she maintained her good nature. Leon seemed like the perfect boy next door, he was super attractive and incredibly attentive towards Laney. As for Cas, I don’t know much about him, but I want to! I can’t wait to dive into the next book of this series.
I am so torn!!! OMG I loved this book so much!! Too much in fact. I can't choose. I won't choose. This book was so well written. The story pulls you in immediately and your mind is captivated by the enigma of the light and shadowbringer world. This story is fantastic and I LOVE Leon!!! He is so perfect (maybe a bit too perfect) and Cas is the BAD boy... He is the shadowbringer.... The dark one.. So delicious. And has impeccable timing might I add. He was driving me crazy! Haha, every time. "GO AWAY CAS! Wait DON'T LEAVE!" Laney has found herself in a whole new world as she transitions into a lightbringer and fights to retain her soul. What an epic journey she embarks on and in such a short period of time. I need answers and I need more.. I love these two guys so much and I am legit torn. All is not as they seem and there are so many mysteries surrounding these two worlds. I cannot wait for book 2. You have to read this book!
Torn by Angelina, is truly an amazing read that will keep readers addicted. Being the first book of the "Breath of Fate Series", it draws you into the world of heaven and hell and lost souls. Intended for young adults, it's captivating with its supernatural world and themes of friendships and how it affects each person as they grow. You follow Laney, a young girl with a hidden talent that not even she knows. This ability lets her see the souls of the departed, causing her to feel like a freak and outcast in her society and among her circle.
This story deals with teens trying to figure out their lives as the story takes you deeper and. deeper into the Angel of Death mythology. There's angst, friendship building, fantasy, and consequences, all wrapped up in this beautiful tale. The storyline writing is smooth and flows nicely as it goes into depth with each character showcased. I highly suggest this read!
This book definitely deserves a 5 star review! Torn kept me on the edge of my seat through out the entire book. When I thought I knew what was about to happen I was always proven wrong. This book is definitely a page turner. I read this book in two days because I could not put it down! Laney's world gets turned around when her Gran dies. She's suddenly opened up to an entire world she didn't know existed and now not only has she discovered a family secret. Now Laney finds that her life is endangered, and the only one who might be able to protect her is her best friend Leon. Laney and Leon have been friends for most of their life, but she suddenly finds that she might not know her best friend as well as she thought she did. This book is a great mixture of suspense, action, and romance. Angelina again has showcased her talent as a writer. I can not wait for the next instalment of this series!
~REVIEW~ This was an original story with a good cast of characters. Laney and her friend Leon have been friends since childhood and are slowly developing feelings for one another. This is one of the few times a YA book hasn't used insta-love (an unfortunate love at 1st sight scenario) and it makes sense. They are growing unto each other. Cas (Lucas) is their bad boy enemy that hangs around all the time and seems to pop up uninvited often. I love him! He is a bad boy, but I feel like he doesn't actually want to be.
I would rate this 3.5 stars.
I took away points for the unfortunate 1st couple of chapters that implied something horrific happened that was extremely tragic to Laney, when it did not. The same with Jo (Laney's bff).
I would recommend this book though, I am interested to see where things head after the cliffhanger!
~Thank you to #bookfunnel for the advanced copy ~

This was a a fun escape audiobook. I really enjoy duel narrators. I give it 3 stars because it is a little hokey paranormal teen romance, but so easy to follow and listen to. I need that these days with everything I have going on. Torn is a different take on the paranormal world. Laney’s best friend Leon isn’t who she thought. When her grandmother is on her deathbed, Laney sees two figures no one else can see. What does that make her. There are two forces at work here. One for Heaven, and one for Hell. Grandma tells Laney before she dies to be careful who you give your heart to. There are three more books on this series. I’m not sure I will continue or not. I liked the story better than I thought I would. So probably at some point I will see this through to the end.
I almost felt as though I was hypnotised scanning each page to find out where this story would end up but I was totally unprepared for the last chapter! I absolutely love how Angelina twists her stories. Utterly unpredictable! It's lovely to read how Leon protects Laney and tries to shield her from her destiny until she finally manifest into a Lightbringer. Laney's shock at the discovery of what is in store for her, her fear of Cas and what his ultimate goal is, the need for Laney protect her friend, is very alluring. The warning from her grandmother has Laney confused as she struggles to understand. Cas is evil, right? Or is he...Looking forward to finding out how the story progresses
(Is it an arbitrary number, maybe. Would I recommend it, yes)
Angelina has done it again.
In a fantasy novel unlike others I’ve read, Laney learns of a world she didn’t know was real. With some surprising twists and turns we get to learn right along with her as she interacts with some shockingly handsome fellas.
Laney is in high school... for those of you who, like me, read YA but are not longer YA.... high school aged MCs often make me a bit apprehensive about reading a book but despite some scenes even taking place within the school I didn’t get that “eesh they’re babies” feeling so 👍👍 to that
Thanks for the arc in exchange for this honest review.
Laney was used to the normal world, where creatures trying to bargain for souls didn't exist. Until her grandmother died and she learned she too would be one of those creatures. Until she can come into her own as a Lightbringer, Laney is a target for Shadowbringer Cas and without the help of her best friend Leon, she could lose her own soul forever.
The plot of this book is absolutely amazing. The story the author created was intriguing and from the very start i wanted to know more about this world of Light and Shadowbringers. Laney was a phenomenal character, full of real emotions and thoughts. I loved her relationship with her friend Leon, but I also loved Cas, despite who he was.
Book 1 in the Breath of Fate series - Audiobook Review
Narrators do a wonderful job creating distinct voices for each of the characters. It's easy to follow the storyline with the narration.
Lightbringer vs Shadowbringer
This is an interesting storyline centered around messenger angels who are in charge of delivering souls after death to their destination. Seems easy, but it's far from it. Along the way, bargains and choices must be made. This book is filled with sadness, joy, coming of age, trust, friendship, loss, sacrifice, love.
Well-developed characters and detailed world building.
A different take on messenger Angels and demons. Laney seems so innocent and oblivious to everything that it’s a bit annoying. Leon seems so overbearing and too possessive that it immediately raises too many red flags. Cas is very mysterious and it automatically makes you want to know more about him because we don’t know aside from him being a shadowbringer and working for the otherwise.
The writing style is a little off in my opinion and as much as I feel the intrigue to keep reading the series based on the reviews I am a little put off by it so will probably not continue the series at the moment.
Laney has always seen beyond. She has seen the souls of recently deceased, but refused to acknowledge this gift. However, after her grandmother’s passing, Laney discovers that heaven and hell are real, and it her job to usher souls on.
Now, caught between her angelic best friend, and a dark mysterious demon, she must decide between what is easy, and what is right. The cost of learning the ropes of her new placement may be more than she ever imagined.
I liked this.
It was a quick read, and kept me entertained, but the explanation again and again was a bit Meh.
However the character development was fabulous so *** 3 from me.

A great start to a new series. Laney is a relatable protagonist with a big heart. The world building is really well done and comes a great pace slowing you to take it in easily without overwhelming you. A sweet friends to lovers romance develops between Laney and the boy next door Leon organically throughout the book but still keeps you on your toes with a few twists in the mix including the inclusion of the frustrating but alluring Cam. Laney learns sometimes sacrifices have to be made when dealing with heaven and hell.
This book dragged on soooo long. I was so over the delay. And i was SCREAMING at Lainy for being so stupid and not listening to grandma. Ignoring both her warnings. I wanted to pummel her. Geez. But the end of the book? The mothers stories and Cas admission / Leon’s betrayal? I knew Leon was no good. In my bones i felt it. He may be a good guy, but he’s selfish. I’m not even sure he actually cares about Lainey. Now off to book 2.
I'm not really sure how I got through this book. I wanted to like it, I really did but it was such a let down!
None of the characters had any sort of personality whatsoever. Leon was extremely overbearing towards Laney. And Laney...she really just existed. I thought Cas was going to turn out to be some cool bad boy but no. He gave me nothing but a headache and slight confusion.
I swear in the 300 something pages...NOTHING happened. I unfortunately will not be continuing with the series and do not recommend this book to anyone that values their time.
I received Torn as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Angels, demons, Laney is sure they don't exist, but when her grandmother passes and she sees two people bargaining for her soul, two people only she can see, Laney finds herself catapulted into a whole new life.
I really enjoyed Torn. I loved all of the characters, especially Cas. I'm interested to see what kind of long game he's playing. I'm excited for the next book!
Wow what a book!! The story keeps you guessing from page one to the end what is going on and now it's to be continued in book 2! I was absolutely drawn into the book from the very beginning. I loved the main 3 characters and their complicated interactions. I feel like I've been on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, highs and lows, tears and rooting for the characters. What an awesome take on the reaper!!
