Carrying with him a mysterious secret he dares not share, he has carved out a unique identity as both a skilled doctor and a photographer specialising in post-mortem images. These haunting portraits of the deceased are a testament to his unsettling connection to the realm between life and the unknown.

Francesca, a radiant and vivacious young woman, captures Tommaso's heart with her beauty and intellect. Drawn to his enigmatic presence, she begs him to capture her image through his lens. This is a hauntingly poetic story that delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of identity, sacrifice, and the supernatural. Set in the late 19th century, the story follows a complex character, Tommaso, who returns to his ancestral homeland in Tuscany, Italy, in search of his identity. What he discovers are secrets, a dark family history, and a haunting legacy that binds him to a chilling fate.

Each chapter offers a glimpse into Tommaso's life and the forces that shape his existence. Saltoris employs gorgeously lyrical prose to create a sense of tension throughout the story. The rich descriptions of the Tuscan landscape and its characters add a lot of character to the story, immersing the reader in this world. This is a story with elements of horror, but I think a more apt description would be to call it gothic. It’s atmospheric and immersive. There are no “jump scares” to be found here.

I love the dynamic between Tommaso and Francesca. Their interactions are charged with emotional intensity, desire, and an unspoken connection that makes their relationship seem realistic and believable. The chemistry between the two characters is electric.

(Minor spoiler alert as you keep reading!)

I also like how the narrative seamlessly weaves supernatural elements into the story, particularly the presence of a sinister demon and the concept of soul consumption. These elements add an eerie dimension to the plot, keeping you on the edge of your seats.

"Redemptio" is not a light read; it delves into dark and philosophical territory, raising questions about the human condition and the lengths one would go to for redemption or survival. The book's exploration of pain and suffering is unflinching, and it challenges readers to confront the deeper, often uncomfortable aspects of the human experience.

While the story's nonlinear structure and cryptic storytelling may leave some readers craving more clarity, it is precisely this ambiguity and enigma that contribute to the book's allure. The story invites readers to decipher its secrets and uncover the truth beneath the surface.

This is ultimately a beautifully written gothic tale that explores the complexities of human existence and the forces that shape our destinies. With its evocative prose, intricate characters, and supernatural undertones, this is a story you won’t want to miss.

Great short story!

This is such a haunting and atmospheric book, it's filled with dark secrets, supernatural elements, and a touch of mysticism. Chapter 1 sets the tone for the story by introducing Tommaso’s traumatic past and his complex relationship with religious prayers. The power of Hail Marys and the contrast with the painful memories of Our Fathers are vividly depicted. This serves as a strong opening, drawing me into his world of inner turmoil and introspection.

As the story progresses, it dives into Tommaso’s return to his Tuscan roots, his interactions with Francesca, and his work as a photographer of the deceased. The story skillfully blends elements of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, keeping me engaged and curious. The characters are well-developed, with Francesca adding depth and intrigue to the story. The tension and chemistry between Tommaso and Francesca provide a captivating dynamic that adds an element of romantic suspense to the plot. The use of religious symbolism and rituals adds depth to the story, creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere.

Overall,  this story kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s a  compelling and thought-provoking short read. Definitely Recommend!
