Forgotten Kingdoms

Of Death & Darkness

Rate this book
A woman marked by death.

A demon who would send her there himself.

A revolution that will change it all.

Death comes to us all… or so they say. But they never said that’s what I’d become… death. I’d spent my life taking care of everyone else besides myself. I finally let go for one night. One night of freedom. One night of fun. One night to dance my burdens away. But all it took was that one night for me to be thrown into a cruel fantasy world where only the strongest survived.

All I want is to go home and find my sister, the only person who means anything to me, but I’m trapped in this world where the demons use the elements like weapons. Except I don’t have any powers like them, none of the elements bend to my will. But what I do have is lethal and terrifying, people are dropping dead at my feet and I have no idea why or how. To make matters worse, this gift of mine lands me in the King’s dungeon and now the only way out is to enter the competition to be his Queen.

I don’t want to be queen. I don’t even want to be here. But if I don’t compete in this deadly game for his hand then it’s back to the dungeon to rot. My only hope of escape lies in the hands of Lord Avalon. The bane of my existence and the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. He was the one who kidnapped me. He was the one who threw me into the dungeon in the first place. Yet now he was the one I had to convince to help me…and he loathes me with every fiber of his being. I’m no damsel in distress and with every vile word he speaks to me that hatred becomes more mutual. This fire between us is going to burn something to ashes, I just hope it’s not my heart.

Because it's death if I do and death if I don’t.

I definitely enjoyed Morgana’s story, though it felt a bit different than Rhodes’s and Saphira’s in the sense that it was much more action driven than love story driven. Avalon honestly felt like an afterthought sometimes. But damn, that man sure can hold a grudge without knowing the full story…

If you’ve been reading these books in order, you heard a bit of Morgana’s backstory from Rhodelia in book one and you know things were not good for either of them, but you find out just how “not good” things were for Morgana before she was one of the 8 sacrificial heiresses. Upon her forced return she (like the other returnees) has no clue what’s going on, where she’s at, why she has pointed ears all of a sudden, or who the insanely hot but douchey guy was that kidnapped her and pushed her through a portal to another world is. All she does know is that she does NOT want to participate in the weird ass Bachelorette-style competition to become queen to the current shady ass king…the longer she’s stuck in these weird lands though, the more she wants to help the people…I’d honestly expect nothing else from a social worker to be honest though.

This book was much more about Morgana being the version of herself she probably wanted to be in her first life, but due to circumstances she couldn’t be. Her desire to help those less fortunate drove her to do everything she possibly could to set them free. There were aspects of romance and spice, but those were mostly through flashbacks. I really hope we see or at least hear more about what Morgana and Avalon are getting up to in future books.

If the publisher, author, or editor reads this - on page 213 “she sat at the end of the table with her own plate of FOOD” not “FOOT”. That’s just lazy editing. If she was eating FOOT it would be a plate of FEET. I feel like eating one foot is a finger food situation that doesn’t require a plate.

Review:

It was fine? I guess? There was little special about this one. Barely any intrigue. The whole series is 8 books from 8 authors for 8 pieces of a world story. Okay, fine. They are fated mates, M/F, happy endings as advertised. For this installment there was just very little to the characters and the story that was at all interesting. Honestly they felt more interesting as characters when mentioned in the other books. I expected more.

amazing

Absolutely loved this book. I just cannot get over how effortlessly these books flow into the next. The world building continues to be impressive and in great detail.

I loved watching the relationship and character growth in this book - it was absolutely beautiful to see.

Of Death and Darkness

A great addition to the series. This one focuses on the demons. I loved the world and the various elemental magics. The twists were exciting to read and the characters were strong, determined and easy to root for.

You might enjoy this if you like these tropes:

- enemies to lovers
- second chances
- banter
- fierce FMC
- hate to love
- deadly competition
- elemental magic

Firstly for a romance there was very little chemistry or actual romance between the two main characters. Honestly you could probably have taken the male romantic lead out of the story and had basically the same book (for the present day scenes at least, and the most scenes didn’t develop any relationship they were literally just sex). The book also really needed an editor. I think we heard on about three separate occasions how if she wasn’t wearing a jacket her arms would be shredded and honestly, “come boobs” could have been said about 4 times less.

I adored the first book I read in this series (Of Elves and Ember) and unfortunately the others just haven’t lived up to it.

Megan I am still in the post book finish whirlwind, my mind wont stop thinking about it. This book was phenomenal, and I honestly want more adventures for Morgana and Avalon or other members of their kingdom.

Memory loss has been a common and useful theme so far within this series and it makes complete sense. Especially considering the principal of “fresh” eyes on a problem being able to solve it with ease. I loved the way Morgana got flashbacks of her former life and her memory back far sooner than the other queens before her. I also love and want my own Monty, hes adorable and I neeeeed him.

One of the big things that I worried about and was quickly relieved to find out is that we didn’t spend the entire time in the palace. I liked that we get to see the demon lands and clans. We got see how the explosion changed the people and cursed them to not be able to leave their lands. I was especially torn by the leaders of Tempest and Cinder being a mated pair torn apart by their new powers and never allowed to be close.

I am a sucker for a good magic system, and I think this one was done beautifully. Not only did you tie the power to the clan, but you tied the demon to the land by their power. Their new abilities became a gift and a curse.

All in all I loved this book and I will probably be reading it again soon!

Not impressed, this author has crafted a lot better books.

I didn't like that there was a trigger for women who had been sexually assaulted. I didn't like that the main character Lily is a prostitute. And poor Morgana finds out she was a prostitute in her past life. I would be mortified! Her reasons for it are noble. She's saving the money she earns to by nectar for her sister to eat. In the meantime Lily isn't eating. In the end her sister sacrifices her happiness to marry a monster so that Lily can enter the healing pool. Unfortunately, Lily was to far gone. And since she knew it for her to sacrifice herself to save everyone wasn't a big deal. Although she knew her sister was going to be one of the eight too. It says they walked hand in hand to the temple. I would think she wouldn't want that for her sister. After Avalon, the love interest of Lily, finds out she didn't betray him & help the vampires become demons he changes. He & Lily or Morgana set out to help to free the demons. They even free them from their territories. When they were turned into demons families were ripped apart because they were divided by their magic types. They literally couldn't cross each others territory without dying. Morgana puts her life on the line to right the wrongs that were done to her people. The ending was really good!

Kingdom of Demons, Isramorta is where the story will take us after a brief recap of the events that unfolded in Las Vegas—events we've already encountered in both the first and second books.

However, this time we gain a complete understanding of what truly transpired, including the details about the blood-stained phone that Rhodelia discovered, as well as further explanation of the elevator incident.

I noticed there were some incorrect uses of he/she in the narrative, as well as a typo where 'food' was mistakenly written as 'foot.' I had to read it twice to ensure I understood it correctly 😂. Aside from that, the story is engaging, featuring a tragic love tale, a feisty heroine, and a hero who holds a grudge over an unverified situation.

My favourite element of the story is the relationship between Morgana and her Ferinx pet, Monty! I love that she has Monty by her side to accompany her in the foreign and treacherous world. But, it's a pity we don't get to see an illustration of Monty in the book!

Following Alina's introduction in this book, I can't wait to learn more about her journey in the Kingdom of the Fae, especially after her cheeky way of assisting Morgana and Avalon in acquiring the object necessary to defeat Dacio. I’m also curious about the training she has undergone, its purpose, and what her story entails in Las Vegas.

Damn, Morgana had it the worst so far. Poor girl was just thrown in there with no explanation, no guide and if it wasn’t for her unique ability to keep the pervs away, she wouldn’t have survived long enough to find out what was going on.

It was too short of a book for the story to properly develop. Everything resolved too easily, with no particular struggle, no angst, no tension. Everyone was just always there in the right place at the right time. How convenient. How… boring.

As for the romance, I couldn’t care less about it. Morgana was fun („yo, Abba girl” took me out 😆) and her character arc had some potential, though with the length of the book, it was, sadly, never truly explored.

The Avalon dude, on the other hand… damn, he sucked.
He immediately assumed the worst, never giving the supposed love of his life any benefit of the doubt and then just treated her accordingly. And by that I mean: shitty af.
She should have at least let him grovel, though I’m not sure it would help. He was honestly more of a nuisance in that story. Easily the most boring and unimpressive mmc I’ve seen in a while. The story would honestly be better without him in it.

There was no chemistry between them either way, so, whatever.

Anyway, I think this story had a good potential and if the author developed it some more, it could have been great. Instead it was a quick, mostly lackluster read.

Of Death & Darkness is the third installment of the Forgotten Kingdom Series. This series is an 8-book series with each book written by different authors. Of Death and Darkness was written by Megan Montero. It starts with Morgana and her sister getting ready for Vegas's most notorious Halloween party. The place was beautiful. They met an adoptive sister, Saphira, and enjoyed a drink. Shortly, the ladies got separated. Her sister Rhode was asked to dance and Saphira had to use the restroom. And Morgana saw the most handsome man she had ever seen coming over. He grabbed her hand and pulled her along. She tried to get away, but his grip was a vise. He pushed her into a corner and she fell, Fell further than she should have. She found herself in an area that was not the same as where she left. Such begins her adventure.

Montero’s world was a wonderful one to fall into. I couldn’t put it down. Morgana’s story unraveled in such a great way. It has a tragic love story, an uprising and so much more. It refers to different worlds that will connect with the other Forgotten Kingdoms. I can’t wait to keep up and enjoy the worlds.

End of chapter 6: “...Do not fail this time.” “I’d never failed him once before and even this time, I had retrieved his coveted treasure.”
What is this supposed to indicate? Did Avalon never fail him or fail him once before? Gah!

Morgana, formerly known as Lily, is the third woman snatched from Las Vegas and magicked to Terrea. She discovers that she is a demon in this realm, captured by Avalon for the self-proclaimed King Dacio. Dacio is testing females with strong magic with the “winner" to become his queen. Early on she is befriended by a magical creature whom she names Monty. Monty is a lot more than his appearance would lead one to believe.

She and Avalon were lovers fifty years ago but he misinterpreted her actions and now despises her.
Morgana must find a way to reunite the demon realms, merging air, water, earth, fire and her gift of spirit into one.

I don’t know if any of these authors will address this but I would like to read about these eight women's lives before they sacrificed themselves. Maybe a ninth book?

Morgana’s story! Been waiting for her story since we’ve met her in book one and now it’s her turn. Like her sisters, Morgana is pulled into this new world but with not much of a happy greeting like Rhode and Saphira. She finds herself in the world of demons and is one herself. Her memory is gone like the other girls has been so far but she can handle herself. What she doesn’t understand is Avalon. His anger toward her is a fury she doesn’t understand and can’t imagine what she has done to him to make him act like this. And why does he call her Lily? And he serves the current demon king who has brought women in from their lands to compete to be his queen. Something Morgana will never let happen. She’ll escape before that. Avalon’s anger comes from what he believes the woman he loved did that sparked this war and the suffering of his people. But his love for her is still there after so long and he just wants to know what happened. Lucky for him, it feels like Morgana’s memory comes back quicker than her sisters’. And with it some terrible truths of the past but not without hope of them saving their future. Another interesting story in this world! It’s been fun exploring the different lands and those who reside in them. We get a little sneak peek of the next girl and I’m excited to see what happens in her story!

Megan Montero’s “Of Death and Darkness” is the third book in the Forgotten Kingdoms series, a shared world written by multiple authors. It takes place in the demon realm, Isramorta, and it’s Avalon and Morgana’s story.

I actually really enjoyed this book. It was very action packed, and though there were many of them, I was never able to guess the plot twists. I also found the fact that there was a competition to become the demon queen was super interesting,

I really loved Morgana’s personality: she was smart and sassy, and she was very genuinely kindhearted as well. She used her intelligence to keep herself alive and unharmed, even under pressure, which is something I was really impressed by.

Avalan was a wonderful character as well. He did hold a grudge against Morgana for a portion of the book, but he definitely had his reasons. I loved his and Morgana’s banter, and I loved the way he cared about her even when he was trying to convince himself that she wasn’t a good or trustworthy person. I highly recommend this book!

Wow! This book is amazing! I haven't read the first two books of the series yet so I can assure you it doesn't matter where you start!

Morgana is a very relatable character to me. She is strong, fierce, caring, and doesn't whine about anything. She just gets it done.

Avalon on the other hand... ugh I just wanted to smack him! What an apple. Thankfully Morgana does smack him a time or two so I felt a little better lol.

The flashback memories Morgana has of her and Avalon from before are so sweet, they had me swooning. Avalon is a really good guy, just holding a grudge under wrong assumptions.

The love story, the mystery, the adventure, the action.... it's all here and it's definitely a book that's impossible to put down.

I love that so many authors have teamed up for this series. I devour anything by Chandelle LaVaun, Jen L Gray, and Megan Montero but the others are new to me. I'm excited about it. Grab your copies and get to reading! This installment does not disappoint!

Good

Morgana and Avalon

Reborn on Earth, and raised with two adopted sisters, Morgana is disturbed when an attractive man kidnaps her from the Halloween party she attended with her sisters.
Thrust into an unknown world, she ends up fighting for her life when a magic she has no idea how to control kills her attackers.
Finding herself a demon amongst demons, she is forced into a competition for a king's hand in marriage, one she doesn't want. Morgana will have to recover the memories she has lost in order to save both herself, and the kingdom she feels responsible for.

Another enjoyable entry into the Forgotten Kingdoms, multi-author series.
This one is the story of Morgana, whose sisters we have seen in the two previous books in the series. There is a slight crossover with Rhode's story, but nothing you need to have read first.
It's a fairly fast paced tale, with plenty of action and magic, and a cute magical pet!

This is for romantasy fans who love second chance romances.

not great

This one is mediocre at best (especially compared to the previous book in the series).

The pros: the world building is fantastic, and the overall plot is interesting enough that I managed to finish it despite the flaws. Also I love Monty.

The cons (SPOILERS AHEAD): the pacing is so off. It’s supposed to be enemies to lovers, and the whole point of the trope is to slowly break through the walls. Here everything just kinda changes suddenly without tension and build. There’s also no reward for the romance. The whole last third of the book feels super rushed.

And then there’s the writing. It badly needs an editor, there are so many grammatical issues. It also reads like it’s written by an amateur - lots of issues with tense agreement, verb/subject agreement, and repeating words to the point half the sentences are awkward as hell. It breaks immersion.

Overall… only worth reading to complete the series.

I loved it!!

I can’t get over this world! Terrea is my favorite place to disappear to! So far, we’ve read about Rhodelia and Varan (loved their story), then Saphira and Ryker (great book but I did have an issue with that one), and now Morgana and Avalon! I’ve been so excited to read about Morgana after that little teaser in Of Blood and Nightmares, and it did not disappoint!! Morgana dealt with a lot of suffering in her past life, but she’s come back even stronger! I loved the dynamic between her and Avalon, even when they were trying to kill each other, and I liked that she stood up to him. I also knew I was not going to like Dacio, and he did not disappoint! I can’t wait to read the next book and meet our 4th member of the 8th. (Also, really looking forward to meeting Alina!! I need to know what’s happening in the Fae Courts!!)

I really love this book series and the lore of their supernatural realm. I loved hearing from Morgana- I loved that her memory was not *totally* gone like the other girls and she had some dream-throw backs. I also love that she didn’t seem to keep doubting the fact that she wasn’t on earth any longer- At least not as much as the other gals/books thus far have. I would have liked to learn more about the different sectors of demons and their powers &&& please tell me more about these little critters/animals that imprint- so cute!!

BUT there were so many typos in this book, which is frustrating, hence 4 stars not 5. I know this is a small thing - has nothing to do with the actual plot - but there was one sentence that I reread multiple times and still didn’t exactly know what word the author meant to actually write. Overall, will read again for sure!

Heartbreaking Misunderstandings

Lily/Morgana faced the difficult, harsh, and abrupt transition to the world of Terrea much like her sister and foster sister before her. She was brought roughly through a portal by Avalon during the Halloween party in Las Vegas that the three sisters were attending.

Morgana’s story began very similarly to Rho’s in regards to having no memory of her previous life in Terrea and having to endure the subsequent hateful treatment by her ‘kidnapper’, in this case Avalon, with no understanding as to why.

Unfortunately, I felt the writing lacked the flair, flavor, and flow of the two previous books. The conclusion/resolution of the story was reached fairly easily with the addition of a magical creature that was conveniently able to handle most obstacles. He was super cute though!

Yes, yes, yes

This is another stand-alone in this amazing world. While you don't have to read the others to understand what is going on, I recommend it just because this world is so amazing.
Morgana has always taken care of the less fortunate people, and on Halloween while out with her sisters... her world as she understands it changes completely.
Not everything goes to plan when she gets to her new location, all she wants is to get home.
This story just draws you in and won't let you go. You will be on the edge of your seat from the very first page until the end. I think this might be my favorite book from Megan to date.

I LOVEDDDD THIS BOOK! So far this is my favorite of the series. It is darker IMO than the other two in terms of the plot. I love that this story was an enemies to lovers (again) and that it kinda keeps you in suspense the whole time to see how its all gonna unfold.

And can we just talk about the Ferinx!!! I WANT ONE!!!!

I loved the love story between Morgana and Avalon. I truly enjoy the banter and angst. I would highly recommend this read to anyone who loves a strong minded, takes no shit lead female. The character development and world building is also phenomenal. The fact that this series is by all different authors and yet stays somewhat cohesive still blows my mind.

Amazing story!

One thing i learned from this book is that time will let love grow. 50 Years is a long time to hold a grude, but Avalon is too stubborn to see what is right in front of him. Morgana is a badass who definitely doesn’t take sh*t from anyone & I love her for it. I love how she cares for the demons and what they’re going through & I love that she fights for what she believes in. Now Avalon, he needed a little push to see the truth from an old friend, and that opened a path to a new & better beginning for them all. Im loving this entire series & I honestly wish there were more future stories of possible children of the main characters!

Not enough groveling from male MC in my opinion. The guys in this series have a serious shallow “love” because they see one thing completely misinterpret and make Houdini leaps without ANY communication . Idk I like the over all theme of the series as a whole, as of right now I’m not sold on any of these guys. In my opinion if your female MC is having to have internal dialogue to justify why they main guy being a dick is “understandable” to the reader then it really ISNT justifiable. When the actions are understandable the reader knows and doesn’t need it laid out in exposition.

As the saying goes, it’s always better to “show” than to “tell” and that’s what is lacking in some of these.

Another great read in this series. I am loving the concept of an interlinked series written by different authors and thus far the stories have been great.
Morgana has always stood up for the underdog and hated inequality, when she is abducted to a strange land by a very handsome man who seems to hate her, she has no idea why. On her journey to find safety she finds out a few things about this strange land that she's not happy about and when it turns out that the king isn't quite the demon he seems to be something has to give.

The author has identified that this is a dark romance, but there could perhaps be a red flag warning for some readers for physical violence, manhandling and potential sexual assault of Heroine Morgana over several chapters. I liked that she does not allow herself to be a victim and the Fated Mate plot eventually evolves. It was fun to see the story intersect with the previous 2 books and characters. Absolutely loved the magical animal/creature companion Monty who chose her and provided heart energy and lightness to the story. Interesting series.

And we're back

This book was amazing! I always love Megan's way of taking the dark and making it beautiful and this is no exception.

Welcome to the Demon real ruled by an obnoxious demon Duke searching for his queen. Enter Morgana, the reincarnated sacrifice from 50 years ago- and she does not want to be his queen. By unlocking her memories, she remembers her love of Avalon. She remembers everything but doesn't know why he, now, seems to hate her.

Morgana will stop at nothing to free her people and maybe fix her love

Another great addition

We get Morgana and Avalons story in this book. Morgana is one of the eight women who sacrificed herself to save Terra. Just like the other stories she is taken from earth and returned to Terra with no memory of who she was before and a hot man that seems to hate her. In this book she must find a way to unite all the demons. Some truths you know from previous books and you hang on the edge of your seat for them to figure out and some truths come out. Loved

really enjoying this series

These books written by different authors blend so well together. I enjoyed the fierce, logical personality of Morgana’s. She was an abused child in her first life and was totally loyal to her sister trying desperately to protect her from the abuse she experienced. Again her personality grew when she was reincarnated and then dragged back through the veil. This author was new to me but her writing is good and her character development and world building are excellent. On to the next book in the series.
