Dominating the Diamond

Outfield Assist

Rate this book
Jules
Becoming a head strength and conditioning coach was the dream of a lifetime, but it’s hard to celebrate our World Series win when I spent the season ignored and underutilized. It’s even harder when I’m staring at a lease I can’t afford and the empty room my best friend abandoned without warning. Training the star right fielder is my chance to shine, and I can’t mess this up, no matter how tempting he and my training partner are.

Gideon
Giving up my Olympic dreams is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Facing my estranged dad is a close second. When he volunteers me to help train the right fielder known for big catches and sleeping with a different man in every city, I can’t disappoint him, no matter how many reasons I have to say no. Not least of all, the fact that I can’t even look at a pool without hyperventilating.

Kitt
I should be riding the high of winning the World Series into the offseason—spending my days golfing with the boys and my nights putting my World Series fame to good use. But almost blacking out during the big game was the wake-up call I needed.
There’s no time to be terrified of my diagnosis when I’m spending the offseason with the bubbly coach who shares my love of kink and the anxious swimmer who can’t keep his eyes off of either of us, no matter how hard he tries to push us away or how much he blushes.
If this offseason training is my only chance to convince them both to open up to me, then I have to make every second count.
And if they both end up in my bed along the way, well, there’s nothing wrong with a little extra cardio.

Outfield Assist is an MMF polyamorous romance with a guaranteed HEA. It's book 2 in the Dominating the Diamond series and can be read out of order or as a standalone.

Cat Giraldo writes romance and fantasy, giving happily-ever-afters to characters who are painfully human, even when they aren’t human at all. So I really liked a lot of things about this.. the characters are queer, multicultural, with loving families and all the food porn was so great. But I felt the pacing was pretty off and the delicious pinning and seeing how these three will become a throuple was abruptly ended after a semi drunken hook up. After that the story kinda dragged and I struggled to finish but the back half did have a lot of super hot, kinky scenes. Did not love the villain/external conflict stuff at the end. I think I might’ve enjoyed this more had I not higher expectations after Wild Pitch… I think the overall tension of a season and closing with the series championship made for a better narrative arc than what was in Outfield Assist.

I loved this book so so much.

This book gives us some great polyamorous romance and I couldn't wait to get to it. I thus immedeatily started reading when the ARC came in and gosh I greatly enjoyed it from the first second. Nervous Gideon is someone I felt for from the start and the way he meets the other two love interests was absolutely fun. And gosh Kitt and Jules were so great in their own rights too.

One reason that also got me interested in the book was Kit his sexual and romantic orientation. With him being gay and biromantic he's the flipped version of me as I am bisexual and homoromantic. I was interested in seeing how his sexual and romantic attraction related to mine and at the same time curious to learn more about an experience of such life. The book definitely delivered in this and was so great in sharing through so many ways how this worked for him. While reading and learning to understand him I said to myself "this is not me at all but at the same time it's very relatable." This was from the way he kept his full orientation to himself because it feels too complicated to share with the wide world, to others being confused by it at first. It was done extremely well in the book and I loved every bit of this.

I absolutely loved how these three took care of each other so so much. This happens from the start with Kitts diagnosis leading to the other two helping him and from there it only expands in the best way. Gideon gets cared for so much slowly luring him out of his comfort zone and having him open up. But Jules also totally gets doted on by the boys and met with warmth and love every time she needs it. This all warmed my heart throughout the book and it made this book so so great.

I obviously also need to talk about the smutty moments in this book. There were absolutely sweet and wholesome sex scenes, to extremely hot and kinky ones. And while I usually feel books either excel in one or the other this book absolutely delivered in both. The very first few times they were together were so lovely and sweet it made me want to cuddle all of them. And the moments they introduced some kink into their play were so great it made me jealous I wasn't them.

All together this was an amazing book and for sure I'm going to backtrack and read book 1 of this series too.

I received an eARC and this was my honest review.

3 Throuple Stars

✔️ Triple POVs (Kitt x Gideon x Jules)
✔️ Set in L.A.
✔️ WIDE open-door, contemporary romance (5/5 🌶️)
✔️ Tropes: Sports romance, ménage romance, workplace romance

The first book in this series was far and away better. The sexual tension was just not really there in this book, partly due to the plot devices used to get all three characters together. The baseball star just happens to needs to swim for off-season training and the only way to do this is co-opt the former Olympic swimmer now working as the team statistician. What?

The sex in this book was often hot, but also kind of rushed in places. I was most disappointed in that the female character does get a satisfying emotional relationship, but only one of the guys really desires her.

I enjoyed this one, and seeing the whole team again and getting more of Sierra and Mateo in the background was fun. Gideon, Jules, and Kitt were fun, and their relationship evolved pretty seamlessly. There were a few points where things felt rushed/discarded (Jules never really telling the guys what happened with the situation that involved the roommate, and Gideons reason for leaving swimming feeling incomplete), but overall I enjoyed this one and the continued depiction of kink and various forms of relationship connection in a positive light with supportive friends and family.

There are a lot of things that I loved about this triad BDSM sports romance:
First, it's a triad BDSM sports romance that's a full triad - lovely!
Second, all of the main characters are queer and POC (bi Latina, gay Chinese/Filipino, bi Korean/white). In fact, only one significant character is white, and I didn't realize he was white until most of the way through the book. I love that for us.
Third, it's a remarkably mature romance. There isn't drama or drawn out miscommunications. Everyone is a grown up and recognizes their own shit, and they're good to and for each other.

Things I'm neutral about:
In some ways, the middle of this book reads more like a series of relationship vignettes than a smoothly told narrative. We don't really get the full development of the relationship, and there aren't many defining-the-relationship conversations.
Related, there is very little BSDM negotiation on-page. It kind of feels like there a lot of assumptions being made by the characters about what the other characters are into, in ways that could have gone very wrong if someone was not into that thing. On the other hand, there is a lot of enthusiastic consent and safe-sex practices going on - the realism in one area but not the other was a bit jarring for me.
The relationship solves all three MCs' life problems and doesn't really create any new problems. Definitely a fantasy, and also definitely not realistic. Kind of fun, though.

Things I didn't like:
Some of the kink was not really my thing (very much YMMV - and I might have felt better about it if there had been more negotiation on-page).
The epithets. Oh my god, the epithets. This was especially an issue in the Jules sections, where she differentiates between the two guys by thinking of them as "the swimmer" and "the ballplayer." Including while they're fucking. Just, no. Got on my nerve every single time. First names and pronouns are truly sufficient.

Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot, and I'm glad to have come across this author.

It's a slow burn that has the emotional payoff and almost makes me wonder if I can no longer say I don't read slow burns. I think Gideon and Jules' backstory needed this level of tenderness and exploration. If we started with sex I think it wouldn't have done their HEA the justice they needed. Two subbies need a very capable and nurturing Dom like Kit (btw we should definitely refer to him as zaddy). The way they meet each other is where they need to be at the right time. Ugh, I was sobbing that back half of the book. And we get Matteo and Sierra helping them along the way. Yesssssss! I love it when authors fold in community and friendship in the midst of couples falling in love (in this case throuple). Y'all we get a friendship breakup that's weighing on Jules. Can we talk about losing someone who has been a part of your life for decades only to leave for a dusty man? I felt so sad for Jules. This friendship breakup throws her into housing insecurity but also questions her sexuality. Then there's skittish Gideon. Y'all he is so adorable, I just want to give him a hug. I loved, loved, that we got to see a happy resolution to his internal struggle. I was ugly crying on chapter 17 and in his epilogue chapter. I won't spoil it but I think the way Giraldo handles familial strain felt raw and relatable. Now back to Zaddy Kit. Talk about a Dom that thinks about his subs' needs without a scene/play needing to happen. These two were going to be fed and hydrated. I also love the exchange after the club with Kit and Matteo, Doms should check in too. Again, cue the tears. I loved loved this entry and I hope we get more books in this series because I did not think I could love this book as much as I did Wild Pitch.

Thank you to the author for sending me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

CN: financial/housing insecurity, panic attacks (on page), assault, strained familial relationship (weaponizing guilt), kink-shaming, revenge porn and blackmail

i'm only halfway through this gem of a book and i kinda don't want it to end. i've been swooning, blushing, and completely in love with this trio.

so far, the highlights have been cute impromptu dates, sleepovers, cameos from my favorites (Sierra and Matteo are always a joy on page).

❝ A flush of pink heats his ears, and I am not about to be scolded by a man who blushes that prettily. ❞

there is incredible chemistry happenning between these three very lonely people and to see them so happy at spending time together and being close to each other is beautiful.

❝ If his fingers anchored me, hers set me free. ❞

like the first book in this series, outfield assist shines in it's fullness. every character has their own complex situation. work, family, friends, the good, the bad, the complicated. they feel larger than life and they are so easy to love.

❝ Sometimes, you just have to wait for someone to come to you on their own terms, (...). It doesn't make the relationship any less meaningful when they finally do. ❞

thoughts at 100%

well, kitt, jules and gideon are just amazing characters. the way they fit together and help each other. how they can heal through good times and be vulnerable even when it's hard and scary. it just makes the connexion they have so much stronger.

❝ There's a terror that comes with wanting things that I know aren't meant for me. ❞

the main conflict by the end was resolved in such a fun way. and throught the drama and the agony, we got one of the funniest moment of the book.

❝ I have a suspicion he'd be far kinder to me than I've been to myself through all of this. ❞

Cat Giraldo really knows how to write the perfect balance of steam, plot, small moments, family and relationship development. i can't wait for the next and final book in this series. (and anything she's gonna release in the future)

I am officially a Cat Giraldo super fan!

Kitt has chronic pain that could derail his baseball career, and Jules is his trainer. When Gideon, the new team statistician, is brought in to help with swim training to take the pressure off of Kitt's knees while he recovers, the chemistry between all three of them simmers and bubbles until it eventually explodes. If you like erotic workouts, kinky dom/sub dynamics, and complex family relationships, this is the book for you!

I loved Wild Pitch, and I think this one was just as strong. It's queer, kinky, soft, and affirming in basically every way. Kitt, Jules, and Gideon are so well matched, and it was a joy to see them figure out how to have healthy relationships in each pairing as well as a throuple. I loved each of them as individuals, and they each got to be more themselves inside of their relationship, which is ultimately the point of romance for me.

Kitt is biromantic and homosexual, and the exploration of how his relationship with Jules, a woman, works both in and out of the bedroom was something I've never seen, even in other poly romance. This book is so authentically queer, it stands out in a sea of straight white women writing male-male romance. I want so much more of this in the world, and I'm so glad to have found Cat.

Outfield Assist is at the same time both like a cozy swaddle and an electric shock. It was the scene and the aftercare all swirled together. All three characters have trauma and complex family and friend dynamics that they have to navigate throughout the story. Their characters arcs are equally compelling and balanced throughout, with lots of great opportunities for them to lean on each other.

It's basically impossible for me to adequately verbalize how much I love this series, so just read it.

This was a fun and flirty read! The book is heavy on the spice – the spicy scenes move the story forward and illustrate who the characters are. The spice is both creative and adventurous, so this is not the book for you if you are looking for something vanilla.

I’ve never read a book about a character who is gay and bi-romantic. I enjoyed seeing the interactions between him and each of his two partners, because it showed that romantic and sexual attraction are different. He had a beautiful and loving relationship with each partner, even though the dynamics were different.

The book does a good job of developing the relationship between each individual character in the relationship (Jules with Gideon, Jules with Kitt, Kitt with Gideon) as well as their relationship as a group. This is a romance novel with four romances at once! The book felt well-balanced between all the different characters and relationships.

I also enjoyed seeing each character’s family and getting to learn about their culture (especially though food descriptions)!

Personally, I liked Wild Pitch (the first book in this series) more, because I related to the characters more and I liked that their relationship developed more gradually. I am happy we got to see Sierra and Mateo in this book. They are such a cute, fun couple! (This is not at all a criticism of Outfield Assist; the books just have different vibes, and the first book ended up being my favorite even though I enjoyed both).

Highlights:
- Queer + poly + spicy
- MMF romance
- Bisexual, biromantic, and gay protagonists
- Baseball
- 2nd in a series (but could be read as a stand-alone)

Can I interest anyone in a sporty, cozy kinky, poly romance?

Thank you so much for ARC! I was (im)patiently waiting for this book and it did not disappoint!! Giraldo hit it out the park! (see what I did there?)

Outfield Assist is her second book in her Dominating the Diamond series. You don't need to read book 1, Wild Pitch, but I so recommend you do!

Kitt's team just won the World Series and is entering the off season and needs a plan to rehab is knees to be sure he can play next season.

Gideon, an Olympic Swimmer, walked away from his career after a falling out with his coach and now is working for his father's baseball team.

Jules is worried how she will pay her rent after her bff/roommate moved out suddenly so her new position comes at the perfect time.

These 3, (after 2 of the cutest meet cutes ever!), realize that they all work for the same ball club and are assigned to work together for the next few months.

This heartwarming, low angst story, was so freaking adorable and is definitely one that is going under the Comfort Reads list! And even though Wild Pitch is one of my favorite books of the year, the characters in Outfield Assist hit differently. Kitt, Gideon, and Jules are so freaking charming and lovable and perfect!

Oh, and did I mention there is no third act breakup??

Read this if you like: MMF, light on the sports romance, pining and flirting, accepting family and friends, light kink, queer love

CW's: blackmail, attempted assault

“I kiss him like I’ll never get a chance again, and he kisses back like it’s the only way he knows how to bare his soul.”

To no surprise, I absolutely loved Outfield Assist. Cat’s characters never fail to hook into me, make me fall in love, and then ruin my emotions. Kitt, Jules, and Gideon were so much fun to get to know and watch come together. I loved how they worked to take care of each other in whatever ways they needed: Gideon getting the space to get comfortable with Jules and Kitt, Jules getting the love and kindness she craved, the bathing scene with Kitt. I’m on the FLOOR.

I think this is the first time I’ve read a book with a gay and biromantic main character and I really appreciated all of the communication that happened between Kitt and Jules and how their relationship developed. The book felt very balanced between the characters and the connections between them, not just as a throuple but also with each partner, was so well done. And, as always, the sex scenes were *chef’s kiss*

Also SO excited to see more of Sierra and Mateo!! I love getting glimpses of established couples from previous books as the series goes on. Friendship was such an important theme in Outfield Assist, I’m so glad we saw not only the friendship between Mateo and Kitt, but also Jules and Sierra become friends.

Thank you to the author for an arc in exchange for an honest review!

3.75⭐️

This book was such a great, fun, steamy and quick read. This is a polyamorous sports romance and it has lots of different characters that are poc and part of the LGBTQIA+! Our main characters are a gay, biromantic cis man, a bisexual cis man and a bisexual cis woman.

We get multiple POVs, which I always love in romance books. Our main characters are Jules, a latinx trainer who works in the MBA(I’m not too familiar with baseball so I’m not entirely sure). She is currently struggling trying to figure out her living situation now that her former roommate left her. Then we have Henry Kitt who is an openly gay star athlete, that plays for the team Jules works for. He is getting older and his knees are getting worse, which might be damaging for his career. Lastly we have Gideon, who has come back to his hometown after pursuing a career in swimming. Now he is not only facing anxiety being in a pool, but also possibly having to speak to his dad. Because Gideon is now working at his father’s team. Which happens to be the same team that Kitt and Jules also work for. The day they meet, sparks immediately fly.

Thank you so much to BookFunnel and the author, Cat Giraldo for giving me an e-arc of this book. This review is entirely my own and true to me.

Giving 3.5 starts, rounded up for Goodreads.

I love this book almost as much as I loved Wild Pitch. There are a few more technical things that brought the rating down, but overall I'd read this again in a heartbeat.

What I loved:
- The characters. They felt unique between each other and so did the relationships between all of them.
- The representation of queer and racial diversity
- The discussions around the differences between sexual and romantic interests
- The exploration of BDSM

Some of the issues:
- The pacing, and more importantly that I needed more connecting scenes. What's happening with each individual and their life outside of this growing relationship.
- More conflict outside of the relationship that shows growth in each character.
- More scenes with other people and not them 'hiding away' (they weren't it just felt like it) in Kitt's house
- More emotional moments between characters. The ones that were there were great - especially between Jules and Kitt - but I wanted more!

Received this ARC from the author…

I started this book with a very open mind regarding polyamorous relationships and kinks. I think the dynamics of the throuple was written really well. They each have their own connection with each partner, and they were also so supportive in their own way. I also loved the relationships of each character’s family members had, so open and accepting.

I also learned a new term - biromantic! One of the male characters is gay (not bisexual) but he is biromantic. He explained this to the female character and how that would affect their relationship should they choose to pursue it. I recommend doing your own research on this.

And of course this book was super spicy! 🌶️🔥🌶️🔥🌶️ Other than the first book of this series, this was my first time reading a book like this so I don’t know what to compare it to.

Forget a single book boyfriend, I'm in love with Kitt, Jules, & Gideon! I loved Wild Pitch so much (extra because being able to see something close to my own Latinx/Filipino relationship was huge for me!) and was thrilled to see the tropes for Outfield Assist.

What a beautiful story of three amazing characters - I swear each could have had their own book and it would have been great; but the magic that Cat spun through the three of them? ::chefs kiss::

It would have been very easy for one character to stand out against the other, but Cat provided a sense of balance to make sure we had a well rounded spicy experience. I'll be dreaming of sage colored rooms for days.

4.5/5

Thank you Cat for the opportunity to read this trio's story early. My thoughts and review are my own.

SO. SO. GOOD!!!

I absolutely loved Wild Pitch and I have been highly anticipating Outfield Assist! Cat did not disappoint! I lovedddd these characters, their individuality, their growing relationships and JUST EVERYTHING OKAY?! I’ve never read a book that has a character that a stated sexual and romantic orientation before and I loved seeing this rep here!!
Plus of course as always the spice is 🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Please run and read this right now! Cat said there’s one more book for this series but honestly I could read 83 more 🥹 love the world and this team so much! ♥️♥️

Oh yeah. There’s sportsy stuff which is also very good if that’s what you’re here for as well! Honestly the amazing characters and their depth just steal the show for me, so I almost forgot to mention lol.

This book was so damn sweet while also being kinky. I truly loved Kitt from the beginning, that lovable golden retriever. Jules, she was kinda badass, I mean, being part of the athletic department on an MLB team is no easy feat. Sweet pretty boy Gideon.. from his meet cute with both Jules and Kitt, I wanted to hug him. He was definitely stand-offish but you understand why as the story progresses. Loved the cameo from the team, especially Matteo and Sierra from book 1.

My only complaint would be that pacing felt a bit off at times.

Took me a while to get in to this. This was the most fluid and happy development of a throuple I’ve ever read. Hardly any angst at all. Now, the situation that puts them in to proximity is total “romance reasons”. I was really wondering tho - what fractures the relationship for Gideon and his dad? It’s kind of alluded to but never explicitly stated. And the reason for quitting “professional” swimming - wasn’t revealed till the end and was underwhelming compared to his response. Also - I think the term would be competitive swimming. I’m not so sure swimmers, even really good ones - get paid to swim. Endorsements sure, but that’s not pro. Anyway, that’s me being picky.

The smut was great, and fun to see Sierra being Jules’ friend.

Something you don’t get a lot of in romance - even those that feature an MMF storyline? An actual thruple plot! This one is unique and quite enjoyable, especially with the steam and only one of the male characters being bi.

A multicultural sports romance, with trainer, an injured baseball star and former Olympic swimmer all wind up having to train together, become friends, roommates, and a proper thruple after many steamy days together. The chemistry is palpable from the start and it’ll have you hooked quickly. Definitely recommend it for anyone curious how this sort of relationship would play out on the page!

SWOONING

This was such a cute and spicy story.

The way the three of them care for each other and push one another to be the best versions of themselves is beautiful.

I love the diverse family dynamics and traditions.

Kitt is a golden Retriever Dom with the biggest heart. Gideon is the shy-ist and well train sub, always ready to please and be pleased. Jules is the most vulnerable switch. I absolutely enjoyed watching their dynamic blossom.

My only complaint was that the story was too short for me. I wanted...I needed more.

Overall, this was a cute, spicy read with lots of heart.

Amazing rep

I really enjoyed this! The love this throuple has for each other, the kink, the found & born family, the rep...all just brilliant.

And I now want to read more books showcasing the split model of attraction in MCs that aren't on the ace/aro spectrums! My only issue was the first kink scene was decidedly under-negotiated.

In this, you'll find:
●MMF Contemporary Romance
●Cis Gay biromantic pro baseball player
●Cis bisexual woman athletic trainer
●Cis bisexual man statistician & Olympic swimmer
●Found & born supportive family
●Kinky with soft Dom, Switch & sub
●Under-negotiated kink scene
●Anxiety rep
●Potential loss of sports career for MMCs
●Early onset osteoarthritis rep
●Past sexual harassment by best friend's boyfriend & betrayal by friend
●Blackmail threats over kink
●Precarious housing situation
●Sexual harassment by potential landlord

Cat Giraldo is now a fave author! This was another good read, set on the same team. I liked the biromantic angle, which was new for me and good to get exposure to. And I loved the way these characters all cared for each other - especially that it wasn’t the FMC who was doing all the emotional work for the MMCs, unlike in some others I’ve read. This one also made me hungry with all the talk of noodles and dumplings!

Cat Giraldo excels at writing spicy contemporary queer romance. I loved how each of the characters had unique voices and stories. Their coupling (throupling?) happened organically and it was such a unique poly dynamic. The sports content took more of a backseat than the first book in the series, but it’s still important. The kink is excellent, of course. And the multicultural elements and multiracial MCs warmed my heart. Eagerly awaiting book 3 in this series!

These three were so cute! I loved how sweet, and strong, their relationship was - I fully believed all three of them loved each other deeply. This also had great steam and I really enjoyed their dynamic as they explored that together. Kitt, Gideon, and Jules were completely comfortable together, being themselves, and I just loved that so much. Also special shoutout to this throuple's families in this book - all of them had loving, supportive, fun families. Just adored this one.

Such a cute romance about a sporty throuple. All three of the main characters were so sweet with each other and I loved how open their communication was. I’m not usually one to wish for longer books (editing is important people!) but I do think we could have done with a bit more here, as occasionally it felt a bit rushed and as if we were skipping from scene to scene without getting all the character information we should have. Overall though a really sweet romance.
