Seltsam und spannend
Wie in anderen Bänden der A-Gruppen-Reihe, die ich schon gelesen habe, treffen wir auch hier wieder auf Arne Dahls ungewöhnlichen Geschichtenaufbau und seine einzigartigen, um nicht zu sagen skurrilen Charaktere.
In einer Fußballkneipe wird ein Fußballfan von einem Fan des gegnerischen Team mit einem Bierkrug erschlagen. Bald stellt sich heraus, dass dieser Vorfall im Gesamtzusammenhang völlig bedeutungslos ist und die A-Gruppe erhält Gelegenheit wieder zusammen zu finden.
Wie immer kristallisiert sich im Laufe der Geschichte ein (oder mehrere) Verbrechen heraus, das ungleich viel schlimmer ist als das Ereignis, das den Ball ursprünglich ins Rollen bringt.
Und auch wenn man es nicht für möglich hält, können die Mitglieder der A-Gruppe in jedem Buch noch eine Ecke eigenartiger sein als man es für möglich hält.
Zwischendurch entwickelte sich dieser Band allerdings so seltsam, dass ich mir nicht sicher war, ob mir das noch gefiel. Im letzten Viertel wurde es dann aber wieder so spannend und rasant, dass alle unangenehmen Seltsamkeiten vergessen waren und ich frohen Herzens 4 Sterne vergeben konnte.
Für Leser mit einem etwas ausgefallenerem Krimigeschmack. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass Fans von Fred Vargas auch gerne Arne Dahl lesen.

As in other volumes of the A-group series that I have already read, we come across Arne Dahl's unusual story structure and his unique, if not to say bizarre, characters.
In a football pub, a football fan is killed with a beer mug by a fan of the opposing team. It soon turns out that this incident is completely meaningless in the overall context and the A-group is given the opportunity to get back together.
As always, one (or more) crime crystallizes in the course of the story that is far worse than the event that originally set the ball rolling.
And even if you don't think it's possible, the members of the A group still can be weirder than you might imagine.
In the course of this volume the story developed so strange that I wasn't sure if I still liked that. In the last quarter, though, it got so exciting and fast that all unpleasant weirdnesses were forgotten and I was able to give 4 stars with a happy heart.
For readers with a slightly more unusual taste in crime. I could imagine that Fred Vargas fans would also like to read Arne Dahl.

Το πρώτο βιβλίο της Ομάδας Άλφα που ξεφεύγει από τη μετριότητα των προηγούμενων. Πιο συγκεκριμένα βρήκα ενδιαφέροντα τον τρόπο που μπλέχτηκαν όλες οι ιστορίες μαζί τους, αν και είχα ενστάσεις με το πώς βρέθηκαν ορισμένα στοιχεία. Καλό, αλλά συνεχίζει να μη με εντυπωσιάζει ο Dahl.

Στην τρίτη περιπέτεια της Ομάδας Άλφα, μου φαίνεται πως τα πάντα λίγο-πολύ αρχίζουν να περιπλέκονται. Η πλοκή αποκτά περισσότερα παρακλάδια, η γραφή του Νταλ ομορφαίνει ακόμη περισσότερο, οι χαρακτήρες, ιδίως ο Πολ Γελμ και ο Γιαν-Ούλοφ Χουλντίν, εξελίσσονται πιο πολύπλευρα μέσα από τις προκλήσεις στην προσωπική τους ζωή, και τα κίνητρα των εγκλημάτων σαν να εκρήγνυνται κάπως, χάνοντας πια σε αληθοφάνεια, πράγμα καλό και κακό μαζί.
Στην αρχή, όλα είναι στάσιμα: ο Πολ Γελμ και η Σέρστιν Χολμ συνεργάζονται εκτός Ομάδας Άλφας, μιας και η μονάδα καταργήθηκε μετά τις περιπλοκές που επέφερε το κυνήγι του Δολοφόνου από το Κεντάκι, προσπαθώντας να ανασυνθέσουν την σειρά των γεγονότων αλλά και τον ρόλο των παρευρισκόμενων στην εξ αμελείας δολοφονία ενός νεαρού φιλάθλου στο ρεστοράν Μύλος. Παράλληλα, ο Βίγκο Νορλάντερ, που προσφάτως έγινε πατέρας, και ο Άρτο Σέντερστεντ, που μόλις συνειδητοποίησε πόσο του αρέσει να οδηγάει, καλούνται να ερευνήσουν την έκρηξη που προκλήθηκε σ' ένα από τα κελιά της φυλακής της Κούμλα και που έστειλε στον ιατροδικαστή ένα ανθρώπινο παζλ από τα απομεινάρια του ενοίκου του. Την ίδια στιγμή ο Γκούναρ Νιμπέργκ, μαζί με τους νέους του συναδέλφους στο τμήμα Παιδεραστίας, έχει επιδοθεί σ' ένα συνεχές διαδικτυακό κυνηγητό, και ο Χόρχε Τσάβες, που στοχεύει στην θέση του αρχιεπιθεωρητή, ερευνά μιαν ανταλλαγή πυρών με πέντε νεκρούς στην Σίκλα. Λόγω της τελευταίας έρευνας ο Γιαν-Ούλοφ Χουλντίν ανακαλεί την σύνταξή του και μετά από παράκληση του αρχηγού της αστυνομίας συγκεντρώνει ξανά την Ομάδα Άλφα, μόνο και μόνο για να ανακαλύψουν ότι όλα μπορούν να είναι αλληλένδετα εάν έχουν μπόλικη φαντασία.
Σε παράλληλη αφήγηση δυο νέοι εραστές οργανώνουν μια κλοπή και αλλεπάλληλες επιδρομές στις τραπεζικές θυρίδες 401 πάμπολλων τραπεζών στην Σουηδία, κυνηγώντας τα χρήματα του ισχυρότερου εμπόρου ναρκωτικών της χώρας που, παρά την φήμη του, καταφέρνει ακόμη να διατηρεί τα χέρια του καθαρά. Και που, όπως φαίνεται, συνδέεται κι αυτός με τον τρόπο του με τις έρευνες της Ομάδας Άλφα.
Το Τυχαίο Θύμα είναι πολύ γεμάτο βιβλίο, με όλες του τις παράλληλες πλοκές και τις αφηγήσεις από την σκοπιά πολλών διαφορετικών χαρακτήρων, αλλά είναι γραμμένο με τέτοια μαεστρία ώστε δύσκολα χάνεις τον μπούσουλα, και το παρακολουθείς εύκολα μέχρι το τέλος. Ανυπομονώ να δω τι έπειτα για την Ομάδα Άλφα!

Ο τίτλος "Τυχαίο Θύμα" είναι ο πιο ταιριαστός που θα μπορούσε να έχει επιλεχθεί για αυτό το βιβλίο. Πράγματι,μόνο το θύμα είναι τυχαίο. Όλα τα υπόλοιπα είναι ένα πανέξυπνο στόρυ και ένα στην εντέλεια καταστρωμένο παζλ αυτού του ταλαντούχου συγγραφέα, με τους ήρωες του βιβλίου και τον αναγνώστη να ψάχνουν μανιωδώς να βρουν τα κομμάτια του! Πραγματικά,σε ορισμένα σημεία κόντεψα να κάψω τα εγκεφαλικά μου κύτταρα συνειδητοποιώντας με τι μαεστρία έχει σκεφτεί και την παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια ο Arne Dahl και το πώς έχει συνδυάσει τόσα ετερόκλητα στοιχεία μεταξύ τους!
Αρχικά τα μέλη της -πρώην- Ομάδας Α έχουν μοιραστεί σε διαφορετικά τμήματα και ασχολούνται με διαφορετικές ο καθένας υποθέσεις. Φαινομενικά, ένας θερμόαιμος φόνος ενός οπαδού ποδοσφαιρικής ομάδας σε ένα μπαρ,μια έκρηξη σε ένα κελί φυλακής υψίστης ασφαλείας και μια υπόθεση κυκλώματος παιδεραστίας δεν έχουν κανένα κοινό σημείο. Κι όμως,εδώ η μοναδική πένα του Dahl δημιουργεί ένα απίστευτο ψηφιδωτό,όπου τίποτα δεν είναι όπως φαίνεται και η λέξη "σύμπτωση" ακούγεται παράδοξη. Η Ομάδα Α επανενώνεται δυναμικά και αναλαμβάνει δράση έχοντας τις ευλογίες των ανωτέρων τους για πλήρη ελευθερία κινήσεων. Και το κυνήγι για τη συλλογή των κομματιών του παζλ αρχίζει. Κι όταν τελικά βρεθούν όλα τα κομμάτια και μπουν στη σωστή σειρά,τότε θα αποκαλυφθεί το μέγεθος της ευφυίας αυτού που κυνηγούν,αλλά και του ίδιου του συγγραφέα!
Συναρπαστικό,γρήγορο,γεμάτο δράση,ανατροπές κι ερωτήματα που βρίσκουν την απάντησή τους στο σωστό σημείο,το "Τυχαίο θύμα" είναι όχι μόνο μια απίστευτη αστυνομική ιστορία,αλλά και ένα από τα καλύτερα δείγματα γραφής του ταλαντούχου Σουηδού.

İskandinav polisiyesini özlemişim. Ama bu iskandinav polisiyelerinin problemi şu: zaten dilleri zor, kitapta bir sürü isim, yer adı geçince insanın kafası çok karışıyor. Bir de kurbanlara 1A,2A,1B,2B diye isim vermişler. Sonra isimlerini tespit edince isimleriyle geçiyorlar falan. İyice karıştı durum.
Kitabın temposu epey yüksekti. Yarattığı akıl karışıklığı dışında güzel kurgulanmıştı. Sonunu tahmin edemedim ki bu benim için hoş bir değişiklik.
Hjelm ve Holm’un maceralarını seviyorum. Aynı zamanda kitap yan karakterlerin de hayatlarına iyice giriyor. Yan karakterleri tanımak da güzel.
Bir barda bira bardağıyla öldürülen biri ve etrafında dönen müthiş olaylar. A takımının bunu çözmesi de hayranlık uyandırıcı. Arne’ciğim her zamanki gibi müthiş bir iş çıkarmış. 👍🏻
Kitabın temposu epey yüksekti. Yarattığı akıl karışıklığı dışında güzel kurgulanmıştı. Sonunu tahmin edemedim ki bu benim için hoş bir değişiklik.

A football supporter is murdered in a pub brawl, five men are gunned down during a hijack, a prisoner is killed in a blast inside Kumlar prison. These seemingly unrelated crimes will bring Jan-Olov Hultin out of retirement and the previously disbanded A-Unit together once more.
I enjoyed the banter between the different characters and Hjelm’s dry wit. I loved the way the different plot lines twisted and crossed and then all came together.
Dahl has managed to pull off the short sharp sentences expertly.
To the Top of the Mountain is more a novel of intrigue with the emphasis more on the plot and twists than the gory side of the crimes.
After reading this novel I discovered it was number three in a series. Even though it is stand alone I feel that reading the previous two novels will give a greater understanding of the main characters.
My original rating was 4.5 ★ 's as I just couldn’t initially get into the numerous characters. A short way through, names were popping up and I’m thinking “hang on, who is that”. I went back to the beginning of the novel, wrote down each character’s name, what they did and what group they belonged to. As I got to know the characters and the background of each one it was so much easier to connect with the story.
After I’d finished the book the characters played on my mind that night and well into the next day. Any book that continues in my head, going over different scenes, long after I’ve read the final chapter is well deserving of a 5 ★ rating from me.
I would recommend this novel to anyone that loves crime investigation stories full of intrigue and twists.

Εφόσον αυτό είναι το δεύτερο βιβλίο του συγγραφέα που διαβάζω (το πρώτο ήταν «Τα μπλουζ της Ευρώπης») πρέπει πλέον να παραδεχτώ ότι δεν μου ταιριάζει ο τρόπος γραφής του Arne Dahl. Έχει ως πρωτ��γωνιστές ολόκληρη αστυνομική ομάδα, για πολλούς από αυτούς χρησιμοποιεί όνομα και παρατσούκλι και μπερδεύομαι. Σε αυτό το βιβλίο υπήρχε και μεγάλος αριθμός παραβατών- υπόπτων και η ανάγνωση μου ήταν εξαιρετικά δύσκολη, αναγκάστηκα να κρατήσω σημειώσεις από κάποιο σημείο και μετά. Επίσης με ζορίζει το γεγονός ότι δίνει πολλές πληροφορίες με πολύ γρήγορο ρυθμό- σαν να παρακολουθώ τη σκέψη του.
Στα θετικά συγκαταλέγεται το θέμα με το οποίο διάλεξε να ασχοληθεί: Παιδεραστία. Δεν υπάρχει πιο φριχτό και πιο ειδεχθές έγκλημα και το χειρίστηκε πολλά καλά και διακριτικά, θυμίζοντάς μας ότι υπάρχουν και τέτοιοι άνθρωποι, γνωρίζοντάς μας την άποψή τους επί του θέματος, αλλά χωρίς να μας αφήσει να βιώσουμε απόλυτα και από κοντά την φρίκη της κατάστασης- ενώ θα μπορούσε. Για εμένα όλη η υπόθεση με τον κλεμμένο χαρτοφύλακα και τα υπόλοιπα είναι απλώς η σάλτσα που έβαλε.
Και δεύτερο θετικό είναι ότι με εξέπληξε στο τέλος όταν αποκαλύφθηκε η αληθινή σχέση των πρωταγωνιστών, δεν το είχα φανταστεί καθόλου

If you already know about Arne Dahl then you probably met the author’s ensemble detective series courtesy of the BBC4 Swedish TV drama which holds its head high among the very best Nordic noir. The books in the Intercrime series are even better…
Although this is the third novel in the series you can skip the preceding two and cut to the chase: the opening chapters deftly explain the salient points of the back story. The team was disbanded after everything spiralled a little too wildly out of control at the end of the last book – but now an explosion in a prison, a killing in a pub, an investigation into hardcore porn and a host of other apparently unconnected threads all lead back to an ominous threat to public safety.

The real pleasure in Arne Dahl’s novels comes not from the intertwined plot threads and his skilful manipulation of time, place and person which draws the reader into an increasingly tense scenario. No, the real reward comes from the characters: half a dozen separate, credible, involving individuals whose interactions are inescapably fascinating.
To The Top Of The Mountain is a complicated and intense novel, punctuated with wry moments of sly wit and graphic savagery. The writing has been skilfully crafted and translated to balance the pace of the investigation with poignant personal moments and gripping action sequences. For some, those more accustomed to American thrillers I suspect, it may take too long to establish the characters and deliver the final punchline. Some readers will be frustrated by the meandering path of the plot which circles ever tighter around the nub of the matter – but for me that’s what makes books like this so interesting.
Recommended for fans of Karin Fossum, Arnaldur Indriðason and Åke Edwardson. Also, if you enjoy TV series like The Protectors or Unit One.

Σκανδιναβικής Αστυνομικής Λογοτεχνίας η συνέχεια...
είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο του Άρνε Νταλ που διαβάζω , το οποίο μπορεί να μην με ενθουσίασε, αλλά σίγουρα μου άρεσε και σίγουρα στο μέλλον θα έχω στα υπόψη τις άλλες περιπέτειες της Ομάδας Α!
Ας ξεκινήσω με τα προβλήματα:
Η ομάδα Α αποτελείται από 7 άτομα, τα οποία έχουν οικογένειες, άλλους συνεργάτες και αρχικά, καθώς η ομάδα Α διαλύθηκε στο τέλος του προηγούμενου βιβλίου (ξανά το θέμα με τις δανειστικές βιβλιοθήκες: δεν μπορείς να ξεκινήσεις μια σειρά από την αρχή, για παράδειγμα αυτό είναι το τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς, οπότε ήδη ξέρω τι έγινε στα προηγούμενα 2 βιβλία --> όχι απαραίτητα βέβαια κακό για μένα αυτό!) οπότε αρχικά τα μέλη της είναι διάσπαρτα σε άλλες αποστολές.
Στις αποστολές αυτές κυνηγάνε διάφορους κακούς, τους οποίους ανακρίνουν, μάλιστα μερικές φορές εμπλέκονται μέλη της οικογένειάς τους.
Τελικά, όταν αποδεικνύεται ότι όλες οι μεμονωμένες αποστολές ενώνονται σε μια μεγάλη, έχουμε δυο αντίπαλες συμμορίες, η μία αποτελείται από 3 άτομα και η δεύτερη από έξι. και από πίσω είναι και κάποια αφεντικά.....
ΔΗΛΑΔΗ ΤΡΕΧΑ ΓΥΡΕΥΕ ΜΕ ΤΑ ΟΝΟΜΑΤΑ..... Από τις 525 σελίδες νομίζω ότι μέχρι τη σελίδα 300 είχα θέμα με τα ονόματα και ποιος είναι τι... άσε που μερικές φορές τους ανάφερε μόνο με το επώνυμο, μετά μόνο με το όνομα και πάλι ήταν μπέρδεμα... αυτό θα μπορούσε βέβαια εύκολα να λυθεί με έναν πίνακα ονομάτων στην αρχή, τουλάχιστον των αστυνομικών, αν δεν ήθελε να καρφώσει τους κακούς της υπόθεσης!
Στα θετικά του βιβλίου και μια γενική κρίση για τη Σκανδιναβική αστυνομική λογοτεχνία, ότι η υπόθεση ξετυλίγεται πέρα από μια απλή αστυνομική υπόθεση και είναι μια περιγραφή της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας, εκθέτοντας τα ρεαλιστικά της προβλήματα. Μου κάνει εντύπωση, γεγονός μάλιστα ότι το βιβλίο γράφτηκε το 2000, τα προβλήματα με τις ακροδεξιές οργανώσεις που αντιμετώπιζαν, προβλήματα που πλέον έχουν διογκωθεί περισσότερο και καλύπτουν όλη την Ευρώπη. Η κοινωνική ματιά και η κοινωνική κριτική είναι έντονη και γίνεται με άκρως ενδιαφέρον τρόπο, μέσα από τις σκέψεις των ηρώων, διδακτικό αλλά ταυτόχρονα μη διδακτικό.
Η υπόθεση, εντάξει, δεν ήταν κάτι το συγκλονιστικό, αλλά ήταν ενδιαφέρουσα. Βασικά στηριζόταν σε πολλές συμπτώσεις, κάτι που και οι ίδιοι οι αστυνομικοί θαυμάζουν για το πώς τα γεγονότα της υπόθεσης με την οποία ξεκινάμε, τους καθοδηγούν να λύσουν μια μεγαλύτερη υπόθεση. Για να κρίνω την υπόθεση πρέπει να διαβάσω κι άλλα βιβλία του συγγραφέα, πάντως η αφήγηση και η πλοκή όπως ξεδιπλωνόταν μου άρεσε πολύ!!!

Despite I usually like Swedish crime novels, I did not really fancy this one. I'm not exactly sure what's the reason for it.
For one, I did not like the style of writing very much. There was a part in the book, where in 3 pages text, 4 times the same lines (about 10 of them) were written. I really wonder why. I'm not senile yet.... This and the fact that I did not really get into the book made me think that it might have been written of a TV-series or a movie. There it would be perfectly logical, to let (more or less simultaneously) 4 people in 4 different places hear or say the same lines. In a book that is a lot more difficult.
Maybe another reason is, that I started off with book #3. Although the salesperson in the shop said, the individual books of this series could be read out of order / only one or two. I had no idea who was who, I just plunged in and felt like I forgot how to swim.
For me, this author / this series are books I will not touch again for a while. Maybe later, and then maybe starting with book 1, but not just yet.

My View:
There are many threads to this plot and I do confess it took me a little time to start to join the dots but once I did I was mesmerised. I think the greatest strength in Arne Dahl’s writing is his ability to finely draw complete and realistic characters whom the read can relate to. I love the way this team, the A Team, functions; it debates, discusses, it acknowledges individuals strengths and allows the individual to use their abilities to benefit the team and the investigation. The individuals in the team are all so different - all have their own quirks and foibles but collectively they work the best. This team is a great example of how a group can function if lead in an accepting way, without egos taking control – there is a lesson here for all middle management.
This narrative has a complex plot, engaging characters, crimes of all flavours and styles and murder, mayhem and more than a hint of romance. This is a very satisfying read that fully engages the reader and leaves some threads loose waiting for the next book to tie them off.

I finally found a Scandinavian mystery I didn't like (but kept reading for some unknown reason.). Just never gripped me and I didn't really care about any of the characters or the outcome. Not exactly sure why - but that's sometimes just the way it is.

The third book in the Intercrime series and it was as engaging as the other two. It's subject matter is brutal and horrible, so it is not for the faint of heart, but justice prevails at the end. And, there is a love story interwoven in it, one that happens fast & furious and is the light in all the darkness.

Η πρώτη μου επαφή με τη σειρά με δυσκόλεψε λίγο στην αρχή γιατί αφορά σε περιπέτειες όχι ενός ικανού αλλά προβληματικού ντετέκτιβ που μας έχει συνηθίσει η σκανδιναβική αστυνομική λογοτεχνία, αλλά σε μια ομάδα 7 ατόμων με οικογένειες και προσωπική ζωή.
Απ΄ ότι φαίνεται η ομάδα Άλφα είχε διαλυθεί μετά από μια πρόσφατη αποτυχία της και τα πρώην μέλη της είναι διάσπαρτα σε διάφορες υπηρεσίες.
Ο Πολ Γελμ και η Σέρστιν Χολμ καλούνται να βρουν τον ένοχο του φόνου εν βρασμώ του νεαρού Άντερς Λούνστρεμ στο εστιατόριο Μύλος. Ο διαπληκτισμός ανάμεσα σε οπαδούς αντίπαλων ποδοσφαιρικών ομάδων με την τραγική κατάληξη, φέρνει στην αίθουσα ανακρίσεων μια σειρά από μάρτυρες. Μερικοί από αυτούς θα εμφανιστούν και στην πλοκή στη συνέχεια.
Ο Άρτο Σέντερστεντ και ο Βίγκο Νορλάντερ καλούνται να εξιχνιάσουν μια έκρηξη στο κελί του Λόρνταν Βούκοτις στις φυλακές της Κούμλα, η οποία πολτοποίησε το στενό συνεργάτη του μεγαλέμπορα ναρκωτικών, Ράικο Νέντιτς.

Ο Χόρχε Τσάβες καλείται να εργαστεί σε ένα χώρο μακελειού, τη σφαγή της Σίκλα. Μια ομάδα νεοναζί, με αρχηγό τον πρόσφατα αποφυλακισθέντα, Νίκλας Λίντμπεργ, επιτίθεται σε ένα αυτοκίνητο με 3 ανθρώπους του Νίντετς που μεταφέρουν ένα χαρτοφύλακα. Οι 3 σκοτώνονται και οι 4 εναπομείναντες νεοναζί χάνουν το χαρτοφύλακα μέσα από τα χέρια τους από κάποιους άλλους.
Ο Γιαν-Ούλαφ Χουλτίν ανακαλείται από τη σύνταξή του και η ομάδα Άλφα ανασυγκροτείται (Γελμ-Χολμ-Σέντερστεντ-Νορλάντερ-Νιμπέργ-Τσάβες) με σκοπό όλοι να δουλέψουν πάνω στη σφαγή της Σίκλα.

Δύο αστέρια και πολύ γενναιόδωρη είμαι. Ο συγγραφέας έχει μεγάλη φήμη, εγώ την πηγή αυτής της φήμης/επιτυχίας απέτυχα να τη δω. Όλοι επαινούν τη γραφή, αλλά εμένα δε μου άρεσε. Άσε που μου πήρε πάνω από 200 σελίδες για να τραβήξει το ενδιαφέρον μου η πλοκή! Ένα μάτσο μπερδεμένα νήματα, έκανε καλή προσπάθεια αλλά δεν βγήκε. Θα παραμείνω σε Nesbo & Lackberg λοιπόν!

Last summer I stumbled upon the Swedish crime drama Arne Dahl* for the first time. Here in the UK it aired on a Saturday night on BBC4, and after about only ten minutes I knew that I was going to be completely hooked. I absolutely adored the format of the show and the characters were wonderful. Recently, I was offered the opportunity to read the latest English translation of Arne Dahl’s work the third book in the Intercrime series, To the Top of The Mountain.
Initially, I was a little concerned that reading a novel after having watched a screen adaptation would prove to be disappointing. My main worry being that I would already know the outcome of events and this would turn out to be too much of a spoiler. I’m glad to say that this wasn’t the case. If anything, the increased depth of narrative in the novel helps to flesh out some of the character interactions that I was already familiar with. A perfect example is with my favourite member of the team, Gunnar Nyberg. In the TV version it’s mentioned that Gunnar is estranged from his children. I never really picked up on the detail of why. I appreciated that there was a history there, but it never really caught my attention. The novel however expands on this aspect of his back story and gives his character a more mournful edge that I really enjoyed. Reading this additional detail certainly helps to flesh out his personality and explains more about his motivations.
Fans of the television show, who haven’t already discovered these novels for themselves, are really in for a treat. Yes there are definitely a few subtle differences between the two different media, most notably the character of Jenny Hultin changes gender and becomes Jan-Olov Hultin, but for the most part this is using the same blueprint as its celluloid counterpart.
It’s the personal relationships between all the members of the Intercrime team that really sets this apart from other crime fiction that I’ve read. You get a sense of camaraderie that exists within this close knit group. They function very much as a unit, and the back and forth of the dialogue is great fun. Atro Söderstedt and Viggo Norlander in particular act like an old married couple at times, I love their constant bickering. Dahl’s writing deftly captures all the subtle little nuances of his characters and their foibles.
My other concern regarding jumping into a series three books in appears to have been entirely groundless. There is undoubtedly mention of events which are covered in previous novels, but I didn’t find that this hampered my enjoyment in the slightest. Existing fans are bound to get more from these throwaway references than I did, but more than anything it just made me want to learn more.
From a new readers perspective embarking on an Arne Dahl novel appears to be an exercise in trust. Multiple seemingly unconnected events are described and then woven together to create a satisfyingly complex narrative. Local football hooliganism, neo-nazi gangs, sordid international cyber-crime and drug smuggling all feature. With such a rich and utterly engrossing plot it’s hardly a surprise that these novels are so consistently popular.

Initially, I was a little concerned that reading a novel after having watched a screen adaptation would prove to be disappointing. My main worry being that I would already know the outcome of events and this would turn out to be too much of a spoiler. I’m glad to say that this wasn’t the case. If anything, the increased depth of narrative in the novel helps to flesh out some of the character interactions that I was already familiar with. A perfect example is with my favourite member of the team, Gunnar Nyberg. In the TV version it’s mentioned that Gunnar is estranged from his children. I never really picked up on the detail of why. I appreciated that there was a history there, but it never really caught my attention. The novel however expands on this aspect of his back story and gives his character a more mournful edge that I really enjoyed. Reading this additional detail certainly helps to flesh out his personality and explains more about his motivations.
Fans of the television show, who haven’t already discovered these novels for themselves, are really in for a treat. Yes there are definitely a few subtle differences between the two different media, most notably the character of Jenny Hultin changes gender and becomes Jan-Olov Hultin, but for the most part this is using the same blueprint as its celluloid counterpart.
It’s the personal relationships between all the members of the Intercrime team that really sets this apart from other crime fiction that I’ve read. You get a sense of camaraderie that exists within this close knit group. They function very much as a unit, and the back and forth of the dialogue is great fun. Atro Söderstedt and Viggo Norlander in particular act like an old married couple at times, I love their constant bickering. Dahl’s writing deftly captures all the subtle little nuances of his characters and their foibles.
My other concern regarding jumping into a series three books in appears to have been entirely groundless. There is undoubtedly mention of events which are covered in previous novels, but I didn’t find that this hampered my enjoyment in the slightest. Existing fans are bound to get more from these throwaway references than I did, but more than anything it just made me want to learn more.
From a new readers perspective embarking on an Arne Dahl novel appears to be an exercise in trust. Multiple seemingly unconnected events are described and then woven together to create a satisfyingly complex narrative. This is intelligent crime fiction, not your usual run of the mill stuff whatsoever, you can't take your eye of the page or you will miss something critical in the clever intertwining plots that are in full swing.
I am a fan of the TV show "Arne Dahl" so it helped possibly that I knew the main characters that make up the "A Unit" - the team given the most complex and major crime cases to crack. I am also a fan of Scandinavian writing, especially crime and TV series, I just think it's a cut above a lot of what else is out there, this was no exception.
The book weaves together a few different story lines, but it's clever as eventually as the dust clears it becomes apparent how everything is connected, it's exciting and it's sophisticated crime writing, it's quite unique to most crime fiction books that I have read (and I read a lot, it's my favourite genre). This work is platinum, solid and exquisite.
I really liked the way the characters were explored and expanded upon at the same time as the plot moving along at a strong, fast pace - there was enough surprises and "ah-hah!" moments to make me smile, as things were revealed to me that I hadn't foreseen. I love a surprise in a crime book, just when you think you have it all worked out, you don't.
This book takes concentration and focus, there are a lot of characters, and a lot of things going on, so if you blink or relax too much you might miss something critical. But don't let that put you off, this is GOOD writing, it's a solid plot that is different to the average crime novel and the characters are fantastic.
The ending, the final reveal, the outcome made me smile, hugely, I was cheering on the team every step of the way.
A 4.5 star rating from me, recommended highly to any sophisticated reader who might be a touch selective over what they read, this is quality work, not trash fiction that you read and forget.

Όπως πάντα ο Νταλ καταπιάνεται με κοινωνικά προβλή��ατα και αν καταφέρεις και ξεπεράσεις τα πολλά ονόματα συνεργατών και τοποθεσιών που δεν έχουμε συνηθίσει είναι ένα βιβλίο που διαβάζεται μονορούφι.

I love the Arne Dahl series on BBC 4 but hadn't read any of his books - but when I heard he was doing a Q&A in Malahide in September, I went along and he was really interesting to listen to. While we were waiting for him, I heard other members of the audience say that "To the top of the mountain" is his best book so I bought it (and got him to sign it!). It was originally published in 2000 and some of the mobile phone/internet access references date it a bit. I enjoyed the book - it is well written and I can imagine it as a fantastic TV series - perhaps it was an earlier series that I haven't seen? But I did find it a bit difficult to keep track of all the characters - because I knew some of them from the BBC series, it was easier for me than for someone new to the book, I would imagine. Also the unfamiliar Swedish surnames and place names can be disconcerting. This could be because I read at night - when I'm already tired! That said, I will definitely read more of his books.

Die Spuren führen ins Drogenmilieu, in die Neonaziszene, in einen Pädophilenring. Kann es sein, dass all diese Fälle zusammenhängen?
Handlung
Ein Jahr nach ihrem Fiasko bei den Ermittlungen zu „Böses Blut“, sind die Kommissare der A-Gruppe getrennt und in unterschiedliche Einheiten versetzt worden. Die einen jagen Pädophile, die nächsten kümmern sich um Verbrechen in der Kleinstadt, wieder andere wurden in den Ruhestand versetzt. Doch nun ereignen sich Verbrechen, die wieder die glasklaren Analysefähigkeiten dieser besonderen Einheit fordern: die A-Gruppe erhält eine neue Chance.
Charaktere
Wie man es von Arne Dahl gewohnt ist, begegnet dem Leser in „Falsche Opfer“ erneut eine Vielzahl von Charakteren, die dazu führen, dass man schnell den Überblick verlieren kann. Zusätzlich werden die Verbrecher, solange ihre Identitäten für die Ermittler noch ungeklärt sind, mit einer Zahlen- und Buchstabenkombination versehen, wodurch die Orientierung und Nachvollziehbarkeit erheblich erschwert wird.
Was die Hauptprotagonisten der A-Gruppe anbelangt, so entwickeln sich deren Lebensgeschichten und Charaktere von Buch zu Buch weiter, was mir sehr gefällt. Und auch dieses Mal zeichnet Arne Dahl seine Figuren in vielen Schattierungen, so dass kein Schwarz-Weiß-Denken entsteht: Täter, Opfer und Ermittler sind nicht in ‚das Gute’ und ‚das Böse’ eingeteilt, es gibt keine klassischen Helden wie in anderen Kriminalromanen, sondern die handelnden Personen sind Menschen wie Du und ich, mit Stärken, Schwächen, Ängsten und Sehnsüchten.
Schreibstil
Bei Arne Dahls Romanen handelt es sich um Kriminalromane, die sich durch ihr sprachliches Niveau von anderen Thrillern und Krimis ganz klar abgrenzen. Dies gilt auch für „Falsche Opfer“. Der Stil des Autors ist gewöhnungsbedürftig, doch nach den ersten beiden Bänden fiel mir der Einstieg nun deutlich leichter.
Fazit
"Falsche Opfer" ist wie schon die Vorgängerromane für mich kein Buch für den Strand oder für den Abend nach einem anstrengenden Tag, denn Arne Dahl verlangt seinen Lesern einiges an Konzentration und Hingabe ab. Allein die schiere Anzahl an handelnden Personen, der immer wieder wechselnde Plot, die langsame Verknüpfung der einzelnen Handlungsstränge, für all das benötigt der Leser Geduld und Aufmerksamkeit.
Obwohl mir die Ermittler rund um die A-Gruppe sehr gut gefallen und ich die intelligente Verknüpfung der unterschiedlichen Handlungsstränge in den ersten beiden Bänden dieser Reihe zu schätzen wusste, fällt mein Urteil über „Falsche Opfer“ nicht übermäßig positiv aus. Die Handlung wirkt zu überladen, zu konstruiert, zu gewollt, die angeblichen Zufälle sind unglaubwürdig. Eine Reduzierung der Handlungsebenen und der unzähligen Charaktere hätte dem Buch gut getan.

Die eigentlich zerschlagenen A-Gruppe für Verbrechen mit internationaler Tragweite der Polizei Stockholm wird wiederbelebt. Anlass sind ein Totschlag in einem traditionellen Bierlokal nach einem Fußballspiel und ein tödlicher Kampf zwischen zwei Banden. Und auch die Ermittlungen der Abteilung zur Bekämpfung von Pädophilie scheinen irgendwie mit dem Geschehen in Zusammenhang zu stehen. Während die Polizei die Taten entschlüsselt, setzt sich der Kampf der Gangs fort.
Wie auch beim Folge-Roman "Tiefer Schmerz" packt Arne Dahl auch hier wieder unheimlich viel in die 388 Seiten. Mehrere komplexe Fälle sind zu lösen, es menschelt in der A-Gruppe, es wird scharf geschossen (und das nicht zu knapp). Polizisten zitieren auswendig lange Passagen aus Werken der griechischen Antike und greifen mit größter Selbstverständlichkeit zum altgriechischen Genitiv. Gegen Ende dreht sich das Rad immer schneller, hoch kontroverse Themen werden angerissen und fallengelassen, während die A-Gruppe Stockholm noch vor einer Katastrophe bewahren muss.
Wie auch bei "Tiefer Schmerz" fängt Dahl gut an, eine äußerst spannende Ermittlung kündigt sich an, auch ein durchaus plausibles Rennen gegen die Zeit erhöht Spannung und Tempo. Aber dann will der Autor einfach zuviel und überspannt in mehrfacher Hinsicht den Bogen. Zwar entgleitet ihm das nicht so wie bei "Tiefer Schmerz". Trotzdem empfand ich das irgendwann als Überladung und den Versuch, eine gute Kriminalgeschichte mehr sein zu lassen, als sie ist.
Ein persönlicher Bonus:
Location, location, location!
Der Roman spielt zum Teil im Stadtteil Södermalm von Stockholm, genauer gesagt am dortigen Hauptplatz Medborgaplatsen. Und noch genauer im Gasthaus Kvarnen, einer traditionellen Bierschwemme. Ein Rolle spielen auch Fans der Fußballklubs Hammerby. Genau in dieser Ecke Stockholms hatte ich mal ein Hotel und kenne die genannten Schauplätze. Und gleich an meinem ersten Abend dort waren da massenweise Fans von Hammerby in Grün-Weiß zu sehen. Das war schon ein schöner Wiedererkennungseffekt.
Unter dem Strich: Gute Spannungsliteratur, bei der weniger mehr gewesen wäre.

Da habe ich groß angekündigt, den Krimi von Arne Dahl lesen zu wollen, und nach 130 Seiten war dann schon Schluss.
Wo fange ich an? Es handelt sich hierbei um den dritten Teil um die Sonderermittler Paul Hjelm und Kerstin Holm. Vom Schreibstil erinnert mich das Buch ein wenig an Henning Mankell: eher schnörkellos, ruhig, teilweise fast sachlich, aber doch mit einer gewissen Portion Action. Damit unterscheidet sich der Stil sehr von dem eines Stieg Larssons. Doch gerade dieses eher “Neutrale” mag ich gerne. Allerdings ist Arne Dahl deutlich brutaler als Mankell und besonders bei diesem Buch fiel es mir auf.
Allerdings kam ich dieses Mal überhaupt nicht in das Buch rein. Grundsätzlich sind die Krimis in sich geschlossen, bauen aber, was die Entwicklung der Personen und deren Setting betrifft, aufeinander auf. Da ich nicht zu viel spoilern möchte, sei nur gesagt, dass die bisherige Team-Konstellation aus den vorherigen Büchern nicht (mehr) besteht. Daher begleite ich als Leser nun die einzelnen Personen der vorherigen “A-Gruppe” und genau da fing das Problem an: Es war ein ewiges Hin und Her, abgehackte Handlungsstränge, viele, viele Personen und immer die leise Hoffnung, dass sich das Chaos endlich lichten möge. Und nach 130 Seiten hatte ich einfach keine Lust mehr. Die Handlungsstränge fingen zwar an, sich wieder zu vereinen, doch meine Lesemotivation bewegte sich gen null. Mir war es dann einfach egal, wie die ganzen Morde, Explosionen und Bandenkriege zusammenhingen. Für mich wäre definitiv “weniger mehr” gewesen, was Action und Verbrechen angeht.

Es ist immer wieder faszinierend, ein älteres Buch in die Hand zu nehmen. Dieses hier spielt Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es gab schon Handys, mit denen man ins Internet kam, natürlich noch weit entfernt von unseren heutigen Allrounder-Smartphones, aber es gab zumindest schon Handys. Und natürlich gab es auch Themen, die es leider auch heute noch in die Top 10 schaffen, wie Rassismus und die Rechte Szene, Drogenhandel und Kinderpornographie.
Es ist schon eine ganze Zeit her, seit ich den 2. Band gelesen habe, und so hatte ich anfangs erneut Schwierigkeiten, mich mit den einzelnen Figuren und deren Namen vertraut zu machen. Etwas verwirrend der Beginn, viele verschiedene Erzählstränge legen gleichzeitig los, aber dann kommt zunehmend mehr Fahrt auf und es wird spannend.
Leider gibt es auch einige Längen, die besonders dann zutage treten, wenn man tatsächlich nur hin und wieder lesen kann, aber die Ermittlungs-Arbeit der Spezial-Einheit von Elite-Polizisten ist wirklich faszinierend. Es macht Spaß, den Gedankengängen der Ermittler zu folgen und eigene Vermutungen anzustellen.

Es ist schon eine ganze Zeit her, seit ich den 2. Band gelesen habe, und so hatte ich anfangs erneut Schwierigkeiten, mich mit den einzelnen Figuren und deren Namen vertraut zu machen. Etwas verwirrend der Beginn, viele verschiedene Erzählstränge legen gleichzeitig los, aber dann kommt zunehmend mehr Fahrt auf und es wird spannend.

This third installment of Arne Dahl's Intercrime series, To the Top of the Mountain, is as good as its predecessors, though has less humor, adds more depth to the characters and offers a more complex plot. As you read it, at first it seems there are three, then two, then three, then one main plot that brings the various threads together in the end. (Sorry if this is a spoiler.) The book is intense, literary and intelligent. The A-unit is at its best, and eventually joined by another set of detectives from another unit that helps crack open the case as well as makes the book and the relationships between the characters even more interesting.
There are a lot of characters on the criminal side, and it is a little bit difficult to keep track of them, but they don't matter much in the end. And the relationship between Paul Hjelm and Kerstin Holm is still a question mark in my mind, but hopefully that is a thread that woven into the fourth book, which I hope will be translated into English soon.
I also wish the BBC4 television show would be made available on DVD in the U.S., too, because Nordic Noir is so much better than anything we can produce here. Read on....

Installment #3 of Arne Dahl's A-Unit, a collection of individuals brought together to solve bizarre and baffling murders, features a slowly unwinding plot beginning with the death of a soccer fan, clubbed over the head with a beer stein. There is an explosion at a prison which kills a single inmate in his cell but does no other damage, a car-bombing and shoot-out in which five persons are killed, and a pedophile investigation. Oddly, the investigation into the pub death reveals a link between all of these elements and leads to a potential terrorist plot.
The bones of the plot are strong, the investigation and revelation of the connections between the events satisfactory. The pace is fitful at best until the final quarter. The writing vacillates wildly with lots of tedious passages and childish dialog. Gunnar Nyberg, Sweden's Largest Policeman, as in the previous volume, is the most rounded character with Jorge Chavez coming in second.
Of the first three installments, this is probably the weakest.

Tämä oli ensimmäinen tutustuminen Arne Dahlin luomaan A-ryhmään. Kävi kyllä ilmi, että tämä on sarjan kolmas osa, mutta eipä tuo haitannut. Kahdessa edellisessä osassa on selkeästi ollut paljon tapahtumia, joiden vuoksi A-ryhmässä on isoja muutoksia, mutta se ei haitannut. Edellisten kirjojen tapahtumia hieman kerrattiin, joka oli ihan hyvä, koska tuolloin ymmärsi, miksi kirja alkoi kuten alkoi.
Itse tarina on yllätyävän mukaansatempaava. Kaikki alkaa kapakkatappelusta, jossa yksi tappelijoista menettää henkensä. Pikku hiljaa alkaa kuitenkin käydä ilmi, että liikkeellä on jotain huomattavasti isompaa. Eletään juhannusviikkoa ja sekin tekee omat haasteet tutkinnalle.
Tämä oli todella toimiva paketti. Hahmot ja tapahtumien kulku oli uskottavaa. Haastetta tuotti, joskus iso määrä hahmoja, joka vuoksi piti keskittyä kunnolla. Toisaalta, jos joku hahmoista meni sekaisin toisen hahmon kanssa, ei se pidemmän päälle haitannut. Pian taas erotti kuka kukin oli.

Det lader til, at den danske oversætter har oppet sig. Tak for det! Igen et velkomponeret plot, og Arne Dahl skriver bedre og bedre. I bogen er der fine metaforer. Kapitel 4 er en sand perle i denne henseende, og jeg smilede over hele 5-øren mens jeg læste dette kapitel! Han indarbejder i højere og højere grad humor, hvilket kun er et plus. Det giver mindelser om Jussi Adler Olsen, men uden at sideplots med de forskellige karakterer tager for meget plads, som jeg synes de har fået lov til i Jussis senere afdeling Q bøger. Og Jussi har jeg ikke set begå noget som kapitel 4 i denne bog. Håber der er flere A-gruppe bøger.

Auch dieses Mal hat Arne Dahl einen Krimi geschrieben, in dem verschiedene Fäden zusammenlaufen und ein ziemlich komplexes Geschehen widerspiegeln.
Die Geschichte, in der Pädophilie, Rechtsextreme und Balkankriminelle zusammentreffen, verwirrt zeitweise ziemlich, aber gegen Ende klärt sich das Ganze dann doch auf und man kommt wieder mit.
Was das Buch aber wirklich gut macht, ist, dass es menschelt. Nicht nur die Hauptdarsteller der A-Gruppe werden äußerst menschlich dargestellt, mit Höhen und Tiefen, guten und schlechten Seiten, Höhepunkten und Zweifeln, sondern auch verschiedene der "Bösen" bekommen einen Charakter.
Man bekommt Geschmack auf mehr.
