New city and a new job with my best friend Mercy. We'd both overcome the odds and came out stronger. I have a pack of adoring Alphas and an obsessive male Omega, my true mate. Everything I never thought I would have. I was no longer just a Beta who hid in the shadows away from a family who disowned me. I had finally found my place in this world. My designation didn’t define who I was, I knew my worth. Until suddenly, it was all snatched away. Someone didn’t want to let me go. Force to face the demons of my past, truths and lies are revealed that threaten to chase away the happiness I found. Now it’s my turn to pay the price or I stand to lose it all, even my life.
I should have known. Nothing is ever easy. In my life, nothing is free.
Nothing is Free is a stand-alone Omegaverse novel where the main character is mated to four men. Throw in a stalker to make things more interesting and you have yourself one hell of a story. This book contains adult content and is not suitable for readers under the age of 18.
I'm going to start off with what I did like about the book before I jump into what I didn't like and why this story was a disappointment to me. 1. I love the fact that this is a poc omegaverse book. A black woman whose mates aren't white men!? Sign me up. We need more black and poc omegaverse books. There aren't a lot unfortunately. 2. The fact that there was a male omega in the pack. I can count on one hand how many male omega's I've read about that wasn't a gay romance. I loved that there was MM scenes in this book. Give us more male omegas. 3. The characters. I liked the guys and Free. They were great and they had great chemistry with each other.
What I didn't like.... Literally everything else. This book had the potential to be great, but a few things stopped that. 1. The book was way too short. This was a standalone story and it was only 204 pages. That wouldn't have been a problem if the majority of the story wasn't spent on Freeya being kidnapped and held captive by Damyn's psychotic ass while her mates and best friend frantically try to find her. Quit literally a large portion of this short book is spent looking for Freeya. As a result, the story fell flat for me. This book is a standalone, if the author wanted the kidnapping to take up so much time, she should've made the book longer so we could've gotten more scenes of them being a full pack and bonding. 2. To piggyback off of my previous point, because the book was so short we didn't get a lot of pack bonding. The guys were stressed trying to find Freeya and when they finally did, we fast forwarded 6 months...why? We already went the majority of the story with their mate missing and now you gone fast forward some months instead of giving us the healing and bonding on page??! Nah. 3. The lack of romance. This was not a romance book. I was very disappointed by the lack of romance. This book read like a lifetime drama/thriller movie. The romance was very much back seat in favor of the action, suspense, drama and angst. Once again, if the book was longer then I'd have no problem with these things. However, because the kidnapping plot line was the star of the book and Freeya doesn't get saved til page 144(out of a 204 page book mind you) the romance was sacrificed. Some people will love this book. Great for them. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. I wanted a romance and didn't get it.
I do like Dreia Wells works. I feel like she's one of few black authors who will try something new. I really appreciate her for giving different sub genre's a go. Especially ones where there aren't a lot of black stories being told. However, this book was a miss for me. I was excited about it at first and couldn't wait til it came out. Now I'm just disappointed it didn't live up to its potential.
This was an intense read. While it is omegaverse it has a serious women’s fiction feel. The romance is very subtle, most likely because the relationship developed in the Smooth Pack Duet. It follows the flow and feel of book 2 to me. With that said I found the story engaging and entertaining but because it was a little heavy and sort of almost action oriented it was entertaining but not in the way I was hoping or expecting. It was a good book, good writing, just the way it was done was unexpected. I wouldn’t say gripping because the vibe, the pace, the way the story is told kind of feels like a series of episodes. Especially if you’re a reader who seeing the events playing in your head like a movie. Getting the full picture of Freeya’s background was nice. I’m sort of torn. I can’t say I didn’t like it because I definitely did. Particular how Freeya got the kind of cathartic healing most victims deserve but will never get. I just got something I wasn’t expecting.
I was excited for Freeya’s book after reading going down smooth, but I was disappointed in it tbh. Freeya spends so much of the book kidnapped, which wouldn’t be as big a deal if the book was longer or there were less main characters. But for an omegaverse with 5 pack members it wasn’t enough time getting to know any of the guys. The PTSD was done pretty well and I did like the complicated realities it brought home to the pack.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: stalking, kidnapping, confinement/captivity, violence, gun violence, blood, emotional and physical abuse as child, pregnancy, labor, physical assault on pregnant woman causing severe injury and threat to child’s life, threat of SA, voyeurism, panic attack, PTSD, past experience with human trafficking, mention of side character’s infertility
*Why Choose *Omegaverse *Multi-PoV *Kidnapping *Pregnancy *Male Omega *MM *Established harem (4) *Fast burn *Shared world Good addition to shared world Although this is technically a stand-alone you definitely need to read the Smooth Duet first otherwise you would feel like you were starting in the middle of a story. This book follows Freeyas story and her pack! After a lifetime of being made to feel worthless as a beta Freeya finds herself meeting her mates and the pack of her dreams 😍 they adore her and worship the ground she walks on…and will do anything to get her back! ☹️ they’re torn apart when Freeya is taken from from them and they certainly show their emotions when she’s gone😣 Free has to keep fighting not only the physical aspects of her captivity but the emotional state as well …especially when she realised who’s involved in kidnapping 😮 It was a little predictable at times but these plot lines generally are. Overall A good story with plenty of angst and action to keep you reading.
This was a heavy read. I don’t know if I would call is sweet or dark but somewhere in the middle. Maybe gray omega verse. This book did suck me in, but I had to take a break. It was an emotional rollercoaster. This pack was formed in Going Down Smooth, so we did get to see more of the inner workings and a get a better idea of who was who in the pack. Faith also had growth in this book, so if you were wondering what happened to her she shows up.
This was a pretty good read. While this is a standalone I would def recommend you reading the other books in this world first. There connected and it feels like most of the romance happened in the books before it. This was a good read. We got more info and we got to see healing. Really enjoyed this read.
I have split my review up into two sections. First is the calm, reserved review. The second is the emotional off the dome (I wrote the second one first so I could get all my emotions out).
I would first say read the trigger warnings. This book is less romance, more thrill/action.
When it was spicy time, it was spicy. We just didn't get that many scenes.
I wish it was longer so we could have a look at Freeya's pack post trauma.
As always, I loved the writing and storytelling. I always get so immersed in Dreia's books.
⚠️ warning ⚠️After this point, this review will be full of profanity and some light spoilers.
DREIA!!!!!!!!!!
THE EMOTIONS I FELT DURING THIS BOOK ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE!
FUCK THAT STUPID ASS CUNT ASS STALKER ASS MAN! I HOPE LUCIFER IS STOMPING ON HIS ASS AS WE SPEAK. Damyn is a piece of boiling shit and I hope his dick falls off!
Fuck her nasty ass parents too!! PUNK ASS BITCHES! I hope Avion took all their money.
As you can see, this book had me HOT. I had to take breaks reading it because my emotions were running ragged.
I felt like this book had me bitting my fingernails and skipping pages just to make sure everyone is safe.
I would consider this a thriller that has spice than a romance. It had my heart pounding. I can feel how sinister Daymn was.
I LOVED THE Unbroken excerpt!!!! I loved that series, and to see both series combine was too cute! #welovetrys
I hope we can get a little something with Faith's pack! Even if it's a honeymoon scene or a quick novella.
I gotta see this mating scene!!! 😍😍
Tangents aside, this was a really good book, and I loved it all.
"Nothing is Free" is Freeya's story and while it can be read as a standalone, I believe readers will enjoy it a lot more if they've read the Going Down Smooth duet first. Otherwise, the start of this book might feel a little sudden, and you miss a bit of background about Freeya's past leading up to this part of her life. Also: it's a great duet, so it's absolutely worth the read.
I quite like the girl-next-door feel I get when I read about Freeya. She's a normal girl like so many of us: dedicated to her job, looking for love and safety, and when bad things happen they leave mental scars. Her pack is filled with protective men, and I like the true mate dynamic between her and Omari. I wouldn't have minded discovering more about their dynamic, but I understand the choices the author made.
I believe the author made the right decision to leave this world at the moment. I'm not saying I didn't like this book, I absolutely did, but somehow I felt the struggle she experienced writing this book while reading. There were some minor parts where the story felt a tiny bit rushed, but I understand she wanted to wrap up the remaining storylines in a way that was satisfying to readers. It just feels like the muse left the building at some point, but that can happen and I admire her for finishing this book in a fulfilling story anyway.
Nothing is Free is the companion novel to Drea Wells' Going Down Smooth Duet. I've been waiting on the book since Freeya's final scene in GDS Part 2, this book was not what I had expected, it was even better.
The story was told from Free's and her guys' perspectives with a mix of flashbacks, mixed media, and told in the present time. It was good. I finally got to hear about Freeya's past with her horrible family and I got to know her pack better. I've read a few omegaverses where a pack has a male omega and female beta but Driea's version felt a little different, the pack dynamics were different and there were other interesting tidbits. I enjoyed her version of things.
This book was high stakes from the first page, with the danger, high emotions, and plenty of twists. Dreia had me thinking one thing and then bam, she totally changed it on me. She even included a surprising epilogue that included unexpected updates and happily ever afters. I loved Nothing is Free and now that Dreia has tackled contemporary omegaverse I wonder if she tackle paranormal omegaverse next. I know I would read it.
This is a standalone but comes after the 'Smooth Duet' which features Freeya - so I would recommend reading them first to understand everything that's happened so far.
I have been looking forward to reading more about Freeya. She is Mercy's best friend and assistant extraordinaire.
Freeya is a beta and found her pack in the Smooth Duet, but we only got the basics on the guys. Her mate is the male omega already part of an established male pack. The smexy times comes mostly between the guys, with some flashback with Freeya.
Her past comes back to haunt her and she ends up kidnapped, whilst the guys frantically scramble to find and save her, she relives her horrible childhood via flashbacks, so we get to see what she had been escaping.
There is a lot for Freeya and her pack to deal with, both emotionally and also with finding and eliminating Damyn - a bit of a rollercoaster.
If you have read the Smooth Duet - Faith features quite a bit, and is nice to see how she is doing after everything she's gone through.
- multi-POV - Omegaverse - beta FMC - male omega - RH (four guys) - MM - kidnapping of FMC
Nothing Is Free by Dreia Well is a thrilling non-shifter omegaverse that is part of the Going Down Smooth duet. It follows Freeya and her pack and it takes off where Going Down Smooth left off.
Freeya is taken, leaving her alphas and omega to locate her. Her Omega Omarion is her true mate and neither may survive if they aren't reunited.
I loved the characters in this story. They have a lot of depth and despite everything they fit together perfectly. The story itself is exciting and is both dark and sweet. There is a realness to it where readers get a taste of the trauma that occurs and how it affects the various characters in their own way. There is plenty of spice, both M/M and MFMMM.
This is a 5 out of 5 star read and I highly recommend reading the Going Down Smooth duet before, but it's not necessary. If you enjoy reverse harems that include full MM relationships you'll love having a male omega and female beta as part of the dynamic. There is plenty of spice yet the relationships are well defined beyond just the superficial designations. For omegaverse lovers this is a must-read!
Freeya is fierce and independent, but she loves her pack with her whole heart. And her pack loves her just as completely; they will move mountains and wreck kingdoms to bring her home. I needed to know the rest of this branch from the Smooth Pack storyline, but I can’t say I expected it to be anything like this. This book has dark and brutal moments, hot and spicy moments, even sweet and silly moments. To say this story took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride would almost be an understatement. It’s definitely NSFW and you should probably be prepared that there will be times where you’ll want to teach your reader to fly. This wasn’t always an easy read, but it gave me the ending I needed to see for Freeya and her pack. And, while I hope we’ll get the chance to see more of Faith in the future, the look forward to where she’s going has left me satisfied with what her Happy Ever After is likely to look like. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
I didn’t know I needed this after finishing the Going Down Smooth series but boy did I ever! I loved this FMC as a side character best friend before but this family just warms my whole heart. With their live, devotion and protection I was all in my feels.
You don’t HAVE to read the previous series to read this book but it does tie a few comments that were made about other characters in as well as a couple of scenes where this group met. The book does a good job of touching on their meeting again without it being a repetitive scene from the previous series. That’s a total ick for me, when books have repeating scenes or chapters.
The group of guys are *heart eyes* not too sweet that I’m gagging but not such jerks that I’m punching each guy in the face in my mind. They are overly protective but so loving and obsessed.
Nothing is Free by Dreia Wells is another wonderful story based in her Omegaverse which follows the Going Down Smooth duet. Although you don't need to read GDS, for me, I appreciated the flow of the story told and appreciated the epilogue at the end even more. As with her previous duet, the story is told in multiple POVs which was easy to follow and helped move the story along. Oh, and the way Dreia moves her story along by using past and present tense, or journal entries, or just text messages is sublime. What I also adored was the way her characters come to life in my head and I see the story play out like a movie as I read. The HEA was just perfect and I can't wait for more books by this gem of an author.
This story was tough and touching at the same time. Freyas life has taken many turns. She has survived abuse and neglect and always focused on the silver lining. This is what she must do now, in the hands of her kidnapper. Her pack, also having survived extraordinary circumstances came together by chance. They didn’t know they were missing a vital piece until she was there. Now, after finally finding her, she is gone.
The trials that family go through for each other is highlighted throughout this book. Each member brings a unique quality to the unit. Unfortunately most of them are alphas and think they know what’s best when it comes to protecting their family. (Insert eye roll here) why do Alphas have to be so alphay all the time?
I should have learned my lesson with dealing with Mrs. Wells to expect the unexpected, because every time I think I know which way the story is going to go I am thrown for a loop. This story did not go as planned & that was one of the reasons I enjoyed it. I kept wanting to hope that the dynamics would change and they all lived happily ever after, but it was not meant to be. I liked seeing both Freeya and Faith's POVs. Freeya very much felt like a side character in the Smooth Pack duet, but this book was fleshed out so well that I felt like there was enough there to make this book a lot longer than it was. I would have liked to see more of the healing process, but honestly I would have liked to see more of everything because I liked the story so much.
If you've read the Going Down Smooth duet (the books before this one) then you've already met Beta - Freeya as she popped up there because she's Mercy's best friend.
Back to this book Freeya gets a blast from the past when shes kidnapped by someone she knew long ago. Someone that brings up all sorts of bad memories for Freeya including one's about her family (who to be honest I couldnt stand bug time!) I lived Freeya's relationship with the guys especially Omega - Omari.
Even though this was a standalone book I would advice that you read Mercy's duet because it does overlap with this book and some things will make more sense. A cracking book that I enjoyed reading.
I've been looking forward to this since the end of Mercy's story. If you haven't read that first, it's where you first meet Freeya and her men.
Although this is a standalone, it picks up where Mercy's book leaves off, with Freeya's past coming for her and threatening her future. Watching how strong Freeya has to be in the face of this, and how her men react was fascinating.
There was more of the politics around designations and their treatments that drove a lot of Mercy's story, and I'd love to see more books in this universe developing this theme further.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and it's the first in a while that I've finished in a day!
I really enjoyed this book even though it wasn’t romance heavy. I was a bit startled about how sudden it started, but I’ve later found out that there was a duet which had introduced the pack beforehand so I would recommend reading those before starting this even though it’s classed as a standalone because you will understand things a little better.
The book had some quite emotionally heavy bits in, but not enough to class it as a dark omegaverse as they were offset with the subtle romance.
Freeya was a great character, and it was nice to see her be able to put make peace with her past and move on to happier times with her mates. A plus of the book is that it was about a poc, with poc mates. It’s rarely done and was nice to see more representation of poc characters.
Nothing is free is a standalone novel and is in the same universe as the Smooth Pack duet. While this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading the duet first, as this is Mercy's best friend, Freeya's story.
After reading Mercy's story, I just HAD to read this one! The storytelling, worldbuilding and character building (throughout this series) has been incredible! Normally, I read sweet Omegaverses as a palette cleanser, but this was also feeding my darkside as well. It's definitely in the range of both, which was absolutely well done! Dreia Wells is a wonderful and enjoyable author and definitely loved this as much as the duet!!
Another great book by Dreia Wells. I wondered how she would structure this book considering the MFC and MMCs met and bonded in the Smooth Pack books. Rather than go back and retell their meeting story from a different perspective, Ms. Wells decided to ,I’ve forward in time, And it worked. It worked very well.
Through a very traumatic event, we get to know the Hamilton pack individually and collectively. I love that Dreia does not shy away from mental health and emotional trauma struggles. I also enjoy this idea of an Omegaverse that doesn’t have shifters. And finally, Dreia does not do damsels in distress! All her woman characters are strong and competent,
Introduced to Freeya in the Going Down Smooth duet, I was pleasantly surprised we would be getting her story in the Smooth Pack Duet spin-off! Nothing is Free was the perfect addition to this ever growing world. We get to focus on Freeya and her men. This book focuses on seeing Freeya start to come into her own and ignore the hurtful things she has experienced in the past due to her designation as a Beta. Luckily she has her men to support her and push her forward to be the best she can be. Lots of spicy scenes for sure! A very good additional spin-off to this series.
I was so excited for this book after Mercy's story! I would highly highly recommend reading the Smooth's pack duet before reading this book as some of the connections that star here are developed in previous books. After finding her pack, Free thinks she finally has it all and can let go of the feeling of not being good enough by being a beta, however, with happiness within her reach she is taken and not only her but her man have to fight, and fight hard to try and be reunited. But will Free be able to fight her demons for her happily ever after?
I'm a little confused. I know there's more to a Omega than just being a baby maker. Yet the core role of a omega is homemaker. So in my mind I'm thinking mating=nesting= babymaking=family. Right??? So Omari being a omega, having his own nest, adds up to what???? Not sure why the author chose to throw in Omari as the omega. Im confused by that whole dynamic. But overall great read. I like how the story came together. Would have loved to see what became of that evil family of hers though.
I liked the storyline of the book and how it started straight away. This was a quick read. I would of liked more information/ reading of Freeyas home life before she got disowned and there wasn’t much of Freeyas point of view/ words/chapters in it I would of liked more of how she was feeling and what was happening to her (you will know what I mean when you read it) I did like all the other chapters of the guys though.
Dreia gives us a fantastic standalone book in the Smooth Bourbon world! The story of Freeya and her mates begins when she is snatched from the fete for Mercy's company. Taken by someone from her past, she fights to survive while her pack scramble to find and rescue her. How does all this come about, you ask? You'll have to dive into this wonderfully written book to find out! I loved reading this book and highly recommend it! Don't miss out on this book!!
Before you read Nothing is Free, you should definitely read Going Down Smooth Duet where Freeya is introduced in Mercy’s story.
Nothing is Free follows the end of Going Down Smooth Part 2. Freya “Free” is kidnapped from someone in her past and her pack along with Faith, Mercy and her pack will help find her.
Loved learning more about Free and her past/pack.. this story does end in a HEA
I received a ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
This book was intense and very well written. Nothing is Free touches on some dark themes and the way that traumas affect you and your loved ones. I think it is important to note that I haven’t read the other books in this universe but still enjoyed this read I am sure however that you would have an even greater love for the characters having read the duet first.
Freeya is a beta who comes from an affluent family who expects omegas to further their line and influence. She has had a hard road but has found joy with her alphas and her omega and true mate. But sometimes the past refuses to die.
This book is fast paced and will keep you guessing. If you have a hard time with the pregnancy troupe/ giving birth this is probably not a good option for you.
I really enjoyed Freeya’s story although I did feel like I was missing a lot in terms of the background. Even though this was a standalone (and absolutely can be read that way) it did feel as though things were possibly previous explained in earlier stories. Regardless I really enjoyed Freeya and her pack and it was refreshing to read an Omegaverse from a female beta’s perspective, especially having a male omega in the pack. There’s steam but sweetness and also plenty of excitement!
I've been excitedly awaiting this story since I finished Going Down Smooth: part two. I'm so glad that Free's story is here!
It seems that there is someone in her past that isn't ready to let her go. She has found a pack but that isn't going to stop him from taking her. You would think being a beta these types of things wouldn't happen to Freeya. I don't want to spoil anything but so you should read her story for yourself.
