Revenge comes in many forms. This time, it's a smoking hot demon. When a quintet of angry ex-boyfriends gathers to exact their revenge on Stephanie, they prepare a pentagram that summons Rick, a revenge demon they had no idea would appear. Determined to ensure she feels the pain she's caused them all, the exes task Rick with making Stephanie fall in love with someone she can't have. But hexes, like love, can sometimes take a turn, and Rick soon discovers that Stephanie isn't quite the monster her exes have made her out to be. The magic-depleted demon realm thirsts for curses like these and the magic they bring, but even that doesn't stop a love-scorched revenge demon from using his discretion in doling out Stephanie’s curse. Except Rick's discretion may quickly transform into temptation. Or worse, a forbidden love that could threaten far more than just his home realm's magical reserves.
The premise sounded so fun. But the characters were all too flat for me. All the exes were overblown textbook misogynists. (Yes there are guys like this out there, not disputing it, I’d just like to laugh instead of cringe at it. Just not enough humor. Too much preaching).
Our MC came off too perfect. Miss capable, curvy, too competent CEO, expert at retail, knows housing markets, bit of a know it all. Shes so perfect she’s got the personality of a pancake.
All these men are lame, only a demon could interest her. (I get that girl) But demon boy wasn’t very demon-y. Just an overworked office boy who wasn’t nasty. (I came here for some snarky mean demon flirting!)
I read this so fast. I enjoyed it though the pacing of Casa’ sections of the story was too slow. I like Rick and Stephanie. She was kind and smart and not TSTL and I liked seeing their back and forth develop. Very wholesome.
I was hooked from the beginning. Just the fact that the "leader" of the exes was named Chad should tell you all you need to know about how petty these exes were. On the other hand, our heroine Stephanie is dominating her career as the CEO of a successful skincare and makeup company she built from the ground up. Stephanie is a total ladyboss and I was here for it!!
Stephanie's dating history with these men was varied - but they all agreed they'd been jilted by her. They thought, "how DARE this woman break it off with *me*!" ...And that's how we find five grown men standing around a summoning circle, asking the demon, Rick, to enact revenge on Stephanie.
But things don't go as the exes planned. Stephanie is too smart for that -- she has a plan of her own, and intends to prove that the exes were the problem (I mean, they summoned a demon against her...that's pretty problematic!)
As Rick and Stephanie get closer and form a tentative friendship, we see the demon learning human ways (he loves mojitos) and finding Stephanie to be a good person. Attraction blooms and the spice is unleashed!
This was a solid read with surprisingly good world building for such a quick story, and I'm excited for the series to continue to find out more about the shady history of Anathamea and the crazy powerful "council" of the demon world!
I received an ARC and this is my 100% honest review ☺️
With spells and demons and curses this makes for the perfect Halloween read . Absolutely loved Rick's character and thought the entire story was light hearted and easy to read
I enjoyed this book!! Demons, humans, smut, forbidden love, magic realm and exes. Ex-boyfriends that want revenge. Demon summoned. It was a quick and fun read can’t wait to get book 2.
I found this book during SYKD and the resume caught my attention, but seriously it was even better than I imagined. It's not the damsel in distress x demon story I thought it would be. Truly surprised and happy about that book. 🔥
" - Human men are not like demon men. - What are demon men like? - A demon man worships his lover and knows that they are his equal as well as his partner... He would also make sure his partner was always satisfied."
~ STORY & PLOT 📝 ~ This book had WAY MORE PLOT than I thought it would! Which was very welcomed because it was great! 🤩🔥
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Hexes from Exes is about Rick, an almost depressed revenge demon, that's summoned by a bunch of men who want to put a curse on Stephanie, their ex.
After following her for a while he decides that he needs more information to know what level of revenge cursed she deserved and so he confronts her.
But Stephanie is smart and knows her way around making deals so she manages to convince him to let her prove to him that none of the breakups were her fault in exchange for a lesser curse and he accepts.
With the proximity, everything changes, lines blur and Rick will have to choose between committing a crime by demon law or letting go of her and ending their bargain before he loses control. ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️
⚠️ Just, I wouldn't recommend it if you want to read it for monster smut. There's definitely spice but it's a slow-burn book with very few actual s£x scenes. The plot is bigger than it might seem by just the resume, there's "political" intrigue and a few chapters are not even the POV of the 2 MCs.
~ ROMANCE & MAIN CHARACTERS 💖 ~ First, how Stephanie was everything: 💜 plus-size heroine feeling great in her skin (and really relatable about having a plus-size body) 💜 CEO of her company 💜 She quits men when they're not up to her standard (which is what every one of us should do) 💜 Smart, collected, optimistic, altruist and I could go on and on. 🥰
Seriously, I loved her from start to finish.
It was refreshing also not to read about some victim who just was wrongfully cursed. I mean she is, but he doesn't act like it, she doesn't cry, whimper, or anything. She just solves problems and ditches problematic men. 👏👏👏
Rick and his world were also refreshing. He's not at all some dark and sex-craved demon that tortured some damsel until he finally realized that his attraction for her was more than just lust and bla-bla- bla.
I like those types of plots when I read one, but seriously it felt so good to have something else for a change.
I love how their relationship evolves throughout the book, it was heartwarming. Nothing will make you swoon and blush but there's definite attraction and friendship.
~ SPICE 🌶️ ~ Most of the spice is due to the anatomy of Rick and since the book is light on s£x scene I feel like it would be a spoil to divulge what's happening 😂🔥.
It's monster s£x so definitely not conventional but other than that no kinks in particular or anything. 😁
Honestly the more I wrote out this review the more I got mad at the book lol. I wanted to like this book but it started one way and took a turn that left me disappointed in the end.
Spoilers below….
We first meet our MMC Rick (demon) when he’s summoned by a bunch of losers who got dumped by a baddie and want him to enact some good old fashioned revenge.
Said group of losers feel slighted by our FMC Stephanie (human) because she politely broke up with them? Or didn’t beg them to stay when they kinda broke up with her? Idk their reasons were dumb but the story has to start somewhere. Anyways, they ask Rick to curse Stephanie to never find love the way she broke their hearts. Weird, considering none of them were really heartbroken but whatever. Rick agrees and sets off to meet our heroine.
They meet and she learns of the hex but counters his hex by arguing that she was the one wronged and if she can prove those guys suck at dating she doesn’t have to be hexed. How will she do this?? By dating the losers again of course!!! But the catch is, she doesn’t know who hexed her and Rick can’t just tell her because that would be way too easy! Hilarity ensues as she “dates” her way through these exes while Rick watches. Or it would be hilarious if the guys weren’t all misogynistic losers and Rick wasn’t also a loser. He’s been doing this job for decades but also doesn’t know anything about human food/alcohol?? Idk that’s weird. It’s also thrown in that he himself is hung up on an ex from TWO YEARS AGO. Anyways, they end up falling in love while they’re hanging out because they’re both easy to talk to and so lonely I suppose. And she supplies him with alcohol. He mentioned that a lot. I’m not sure if they fell in love off page or if I just missed it because one second she’s cuckholding Rick (and do not get me started on her having sex with a different guy OVER HALF WAY THRU THE BOOK. Like, cmon!!! It’s not cheating because they’re not together but ITS CHEATING if you’re calling your book a romance) and the next they’re engaging in sex and he’s getting some untapped magic.
The story could’ve been cute if more effort went into these dates and we got to see more build up of the connection between the two main characters!! Unfortunately, right when this bargain starts is when the focus begins shifting. I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a subplot but it kinda stole the show? Basically, Rick’s ex has a storyline about secretly visiting two humans and doing research on ancient texts. And that parlays into some villainy happening in the demon world and the weird restrictions on magic and human/demon relationships. It was interesting in itself and I think some of the world building was cool/necessary but then it made the original love story seem kind of frivolous. Like, I was expecting a sweet and fun paranormal romance and walked away wondering what the demon shadow government was doing. Which isn’t bad!!! It just wasn’t what I signed up for.
The love story - and even the drama with the exes - felt more like a plot device to get us started rather than a standalone story.
Hexes from Exes was a fun twist on a revenge story.
Rick is a revenge demon who has been summoned by a group of Stephanie's exes to curse her over their perceived grievances with the way she ended their relationships. But Rick kind of gets a weird vibe from them and takes the time to watch Stephanie and before appearing before her. When she offers him an alternative deal he can't help but be intrigued.
Stephanie has just a short time to prove to Rick that she isn't the terrible person deserving of a curse her exes think she is. Unfortunately she'll have to go on a series of painful dates to prove herself. But as she revisits her past she can't help but noticing the demon who holds the key to her future.
I really enjoyed this twist on a demon revenge romance. The world building was really well done and as we learn more about the world the demons come from I found myself really drawn into the mystery sub plot. There was a really interesting connection between the power systems that take advantage of the majority of people and demons in both worlds. I found myself both enjoying the relationship as it developed between Stephanie and Rick and also the way they start to challenge the power structure they're all living under.
I also loved their relationship and the way it developed form a business transaction to a steamy romance. I love a demon with horns and claws and Rick is also packing some fancy equipment. There is a slow burn, but the payoff is more than worth the wait.
This book ends on a HFN ad I can't wait to read the next part of the story!
I just devoured this book this evening. I started it and literally couldn’t put it down until I finished. I picked it up during the last SYK event and randomly picked it tonight.
This is the first book in an uncompleted series about demons. A group of crummy exes get together to summon a demon to curse the FMC claiming that she deserves to get a taste of her own medicine. The revenge demon they summon goes to carry out their wish, but is perplexed to find the FMC is nothing like they had described. Puzzled he confronts her and (after dealing with the shock of a demon in her office) she counters that if she can prove her exes are awful and not her that the demon should alter the curse. He agrees and of course following her around constantly to observe.. I’m sure you can guess what might happen.
The spice level is decent. The world building was great overall and I really enjoyed the story, though the ending of the book did feel a bit rushed. This book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but there is definitely a good set up to continue to build the series and left me wanting more. There will be a novella out soon it sounds like and the second book won’t be till next year which will focus on a secondary character from the first book. I thoroughly enjoyed Hexes from Exes by Katryna Lalock and hope you all will too!
Rick is a revenge demon summoned by 5 of Stephanie's exes because they're all mad they got dumped. When Rick approaches Stephanie she hits him with a counter offer of proving she isn't the bad guy and all those dudes were duds in exchange for Rick reducing the revenge he doles out to her. As Rick observes he starts feeling feelings, and starts bending rules and finding loopholes to hang out with Stephanie more. But after he crosses the super huge big no-no law, he's facing the steepest punishment. Meanwhile his ex, Cas is doing research into why the demon council wants to keep humans and demons apart. As she finds her conclusion, she's also trying to save Rick's life. I didn't realize this was a series when I started it. But it became painfully clear when we were in the middle of a rescue mission with only 20 minutes left in the audiobook. 🤣
I'm not sure I'll stay interested in the story and characters enough to pay attention to when the next book comes out. Maybe I'll remember enough of the plot to read the next one, but I'm not betting money on it.
The characters seemed a little flat to me. The MULTIPLE character POVs were somewhat distracting. I understand why we got Cas's view but it managed to pull me out of the story not deeper into it.
Can't say I'd recommend this book, but I didn't hate it so I wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading it.
Full spoilers warning because I don’t think I can censor myself!
First off, I really enjoyed this one! We got a demon MMC and a human FMC in a starcrossed lover AND friends to lovers type of romance with a side of possible bi throuple in the making. I liked the whole demons career situation and magic distribution system and how they’re supposedly forbidden from human interactions yet also having human connections on the upside for technological reasons. Hypocrite much? The inconsistency and clash in law and logic were like little puzzle pieces. It made things open for interpretation and I have always enjoyed exercising my delulu brain.
I also love the pacing, it flows so well and the way Rick slowly and surely healed mentally and emotionally with Stephanie at his side was so cute and adorable. I love them together, the council can take a hike. I also adore Cass’ relationship with Alice and Eric. I live for their crumbs of interactions because helloo?? They’re obviously endgame.
Anyway I got sidetracked but yeah! This was so much fun, can’t wait for more from this series!

This book was really good, it follows Rick a revenge demon still hurting from a breakup who gets summoned by a bunch of exes who want to hex Stephanie a woman they all dated but Rick isn't convinced she did anything wrong and gives Stephanie the opportunity to prove her innocence by redating all the men she thinks could be in on it. While doing so the two become close and end up falling for one another which is illegal for demons to do. While I enjoyed the story overall I didn't particularly see how the relationship between the two blossomed as the scenes weren't very detailed and nothing besides the banter and close proximity really said "we're falling in love" I would have enjoyed it the same if they had stayed friends but know the plot needed the sexual connection. I liked the mystery happening in the demon realm more and was much more interested in that over the romantic aspect of the book, I look forward to the next book to see the mystery continued.
[SPOILER ALERT: Contains plot details regarding the curse and the Demon Council]
I had a decent time with this book, though it wasn't the kind of read I couldn't put down; I found myself picking it up and putting it back over and over because parts of it just felt a bit boring.
I really liked Stephanie as a character, and Rick was definitely the highlight for me, especially as he started to realize the Demon Council was basically a dictatorship and decided to push back against their "naïve" rules.
However, it felt like the author made every single male character in the book a massive asshole just to make Rick look better and ensure the curse would be lifted anyway, which felt a bit forced.
The exes themselves were honestly just cringe, and I struggled with some of the logic regarding Stephanie’s lifestyle. She gives this whole speech about salaries and opposing certain wealth narratives, yet she’s rich herself, which felt like a weird contradiction.
4.75 stars I went into this book having little to no expectations and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I read it in 2 days which is basically unheard of for me. I found myself thinking about the main characters after the end of the book and wondering if they end up together etc. Then searching if there is going to be any other books & following the author on amazon (I will here and look for them on Facebook as well) I just really enjoyed this book so much! It was very cute, light & while there were points of drama, I felt like it was really well balanced. The Banter between Rick and Stephanie was probably one of my favorite parts. It was a very realistic friends-to-lovers type at some points, and I just really enjoyed it. If you're going in hoping for the most epic fantasy romance, you might be disappointed but it's great for a fun read!
Are you kidding me with that cliffhanger?! I thought this was some silly standalone, but apparently it’s supposed to be a whole trilogy.
And WHY was it so entertaining? I flew through it and it had me smiling.
First of all, it’s not just some monster smut lol. It had one spicy scene with the MCs (although very much monstery 😅) – but it also had a huge amount of plot and is setting up for something even bigger I think.
And yes, it was still silly, but fun!
What I didn’t love was that the FMC had an on-page spicy scene with another random character like halfway through the book. WHY? She literally has sex with someone one else on the same night as with the MMC. No cheating! They weren’t together yet, just had feelings. But still, I’m a softie and I hate when the MCs have on-page relations with other characters 😭
*spoilers alert* It has potential to be a great series. I do feel parts of the story were not fully fleshed out, and for me, I wanted more adult scenes. Although the book has 300 pages of background information, plot laying, and character building, it still felt rushed in some aspects, especially with the intimate scenes with the FMC and MC and the ending. I have read books where once I have finished them, I was dying to find the next book to devour. This book did not give me that feeling. Finding out the next book isn’t due out until 2024 did not leave me devastated or frustrated. Will I read the next book when it does come out? Absolutely.
This book was pretty good. I like the pacing of the story line and the main characters were pretty well developed. I like Katryna Lalock's writing style. She was able to keep the vocabulary quite simple while building a complex story. I really like the relationship between Stephanie and Rick. They just fit together seamlessly. You can tell the chemistry was true.
My real rating is a 3.75. There was some parts that I got confused at and had to reread a couple times to fully understand the plot point. You can tell this was set up for a series through the book. I really liked this book and can't wait to read more from this author and continue this series in particular.
I really couldn’t get into this. I signed up for an arc because it looked like it would be fun and steamy. But I just couldn’t. Honestly some of the names really took me out. A demon named Rick. Like really. Idk just didn’t care for it. And the demons basically having the same life span and working almost human like jobs. Just not my jam. And quite frankly the reason for the ex’s cursing her was just ridiculous. I was hoping it was for someone more interesting. Not my cup of a tea. But I’m sure others will love it!!
I got this book on stuff your kindle day because I saw many recommendations for it, but I was hesitant because it had less than 300 pages. I'm glad I didn't let the size of the book deter me, though, because I really liked this book - the characters, the whole idea behind this story. I also love that Cass gets involved to work against their government to save Rick. I was extremely sad when I got to the end, though, and learned that I'd have to wait until 2024 to get any more information, I really hope the next book is longer!

What do you do when your douchey ex-boyfriends band together to summon a revenge demon just to curse you for not being upset enough when ending the relationships?
...Well fall for his 6 ft something, red scaled, gigantic horned butt...and reap the benefits of his forked tongue.
I normally do not enjoy friends to lovers because it is normally paired with second chance romance, but this book had friends to lovers in it the way that I want to read about it. I devoured this book.
watching Rick and Stephanies dynamic change from some form of enemies to friends to forbidden lovers was one of my favorite things about this book. That and the intriguing story line I can't wait to see what is going to happen in the next book.
Join the fun with exes drama, a demon showing its soft side, a fierce plus size lead, and a love that defies norms. This emotional rollercoaster will tug at your heartstrings, making you reach for tissues and snacks. Prepare for a thrilling journey through this epic tale. This read is a must for anyone who's had their fill of bad dates. Warning: Slow burn ahead with a cliffhanger ending to keep you hooked!
I was definitely expecting this to be another book about witchcraft - not demon summoning. And I'm PREEETTYYY sure I saw a manga/manwha with semi-the same plot?
But, still cute.
I'm guessing the "I'll have a negroni spaghliatto, with prosecco." is an Emma D'Arcy plug?
The characters were too one dimensional for me... the writing style lacked emotional descriptions of how things were being felt between the main characters. I couldn't understand how and when they started to like each other because there was no insight into how they felt. By the time they hooked up I was just not into the story. It has an interesting premise but lacked execution.
And a fabulous story. Rick is just a revenge demon summoned by a group of guys to get revenge, the story is intriguing and seriously good. I thoroughly recommend this author. I am going to look for more of her work
I don’t know why I thought this would be an easy chilled romp of a story but this was a cracking story. I loved the main characters and the way the story developed. I look forward to reading more.
This book was perfect in my eyes, it was a easy to digest read! I thing the scenes were passionate and overall pleasing in every aspect. 10/10 loved every moment. A quick read too which i can always appreciate.
The story was really interesting and it's a good amount of spice. My only thing was how rushed their relationship felt but I did enjoy their story and might continue in the series just to see how it ends ha!
The writing was kind of funny. I like a more dominating demon, but Rick wasn’t so bad an ML. The main interest was in the plot mystery actually. Will have to read the second if I want to now what’s going on in the demon realm.
