If you like the Adamson All-Boys Academy series by C.M. Stunich and the Breakbattle Academy series by Ruby Vincent, you're going to love this book series!

What would you do if your best friend disappeared one night?

I'm Wyatt Farely and that's what happened to me. My best friend Thomas accepted a scholarship to a fancy private academy several hours away. He was making new friends and flourishing. Then things started to take a dark turn. His new rich friends betrayed him and my confident, happy friend became paranoid and scared. He barely called or texted anymore. What's worse? Thomas thought someone was after him. I figured he was just stressed, but I should have known better.

Then one night he left me one last disturbing text... and disappeared.

The school investigated and said he ran away. The police said there was no foul play. But I'm calling bullshit. Thomas would never leave me without a word. When I realize no one is going to look for him, I take it upon myself to do the dirty work. I apply for the same scholarship Thomas had and I'm accepted. The only problem? Somerhaven Academy is an all-boys school and I'M A GIRL.

HEAVY TRIGGER WARNINGS!
Dubcon/Noncon, MFMMM reverse harem/why choose (no sword crossing of main love interests), SA, gender switch trope, bullying, physical violence, allusions to murder/death, cult rituals, drugs & alcohol, abuse, mentions of rape, choking (sexual and otherwise), graphic sexual acts, paid sex, sexual identity shaming, forced exhibitionism, bad boys & terrible men. Please note this book is rather light in comparison to the books that will follow.

From start to finish I feel like nothing really happened, it was a lot of build and no release. I didn’t like any of the characters or their personalities. If you like slow books maybe this would be for you but it just dragged for me. It wasn’t believable at all that no one realized Wyatt was a girl in an all boys academy… 24/7
Maybe it just wasn’t a book for me but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone I know.

I read When a Girl Preys in one sitting, everything was going so fast, I couldn’t stop reading. The beginning left me a little bit perplexed, altough the more I kept on reading, it settled. I want to know what’ll happen with the plot, we’re left on a cliffhanger and the guys in that book are criminally confusing. The only thing I wish was different is the age of the characters, they’re quite young and I would’ve liked for them to be older. Nonetheless, it was entertaining and I’m curious to read When a Boy Hungers soon.

NB: There are some explicit scenes, though it hasn’t come to completion yet with Wyatt, (our fmc).

“Okay, Wyatt. Chill those hormones, babe. Next thing you know you’ll be humping his leg like a stray dog Jonesing for a cheeseburger.”

I don’t know how to describe how I’m feeling at the moment. What I just read was fantastic. Phenomenal. I need to know what happens next and what’s to come. Wyatt is such a strong character no matter what she was put through. She just wants to save her friend. C.A. Jay did such a fantastic job writing this. Every step of the way had me wondering what/who was gonna pop up around the next corner. There are tons of TW’s so I recommend going through those first. Otherwise I highly recommend!

When a girl preys is book 1 of the Order of orchids and lions series, it is a slow burn, why choose, bully romance. It follows the story of Wyatt, when her best friend Thomas goes missing, she creates a plan to go undercover and discover what happened to him.

Scenes and topics may be sensitive to some so check the TW/CW before diving in.
This book was a good read it has secret identity, secret organisation, enemies to lovers and why choose (MFMMM).
CA Jay did a good job with the characters, plot and the character development.
I enjoyed seeing just how important friendship is to Wyatt and the lengths she is willing to go.
Overall this was a good read, looking forward to the next instalment of the series

Wow….this book is not what I was expecting! I started it and could not put it down! When Wyatt good friend went missing, she decided to get into the private all boys academy. Where she meets her roommate Jacob (swoon), Percy, Monty, and Ulysses. This story is non-stop, and keeps you on the edge. I absolutely cannot wait to see where it goes. The ending…omg… like what!!!

What a dramatic beginning to a story filled with mysteries and secrets! While Wyatt is going to the extreme to find out what happened to her best friend Thomas, she falls into several situations that make her question so many things. I am so very curious as to who is pulling the sick strings of The Order.

At first I could not get into this one. It felt like such a weird storyline to follow and get hooked into. Then bam next thing I know I read the whole thing in one sitting. What an emotional roller coaster. I do wish it had a little more spice, but I can see how it would be hard to do and Wyatt keep her identity hidden. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I NEED more

This story sucks you right in !

I went into this book blind, and I loved every minute of it! I need book 2 ASAP cause I know it’s gonna be a lot more intense and hopefully has more spice. The building of the characters, school, the order all of it was phenomenal. So even with this being somewhat of a slow burn it kept me engaged the entire time and I couldn’t put it down!!!

Omg! That cliffhanger had me dangling!! And I don’t know when the next book is coming!! This book is a roller coaster of bully emotions!!! I don’t know how Wyatt does it posing as a boy in an all boy school trying to find out who hurt her best friend. She has bigger balls than some of them. Jameson is so flipping hilarious and he just made my day with some of his observations! I think everyone should have a friend like Jameson in their life! The angst and push and pull is off the charts and I am seriously jittery needing to know what happens next!!

Enemies To Lovers, Why Choose And Secret Identity.. some of the things I love that the book offers..

Wyatt is trying to find out what happened to her best friend after he attended a prestiges all boys school, and so she makes a plan to get a scholarship and go to the school to uncover what truly happened..

This was a fairly good read, but there are some things I hope to see a bit different in the second and third book..

1.For instance, id like for the boys involved to be a bit more separated than what it seemed in some parts ( they have the same qualities/quirks just a different name ) it felt like ones personality bled into the others

2. I hope the spice picks up a bit , but I suspect it will as the book progresses .

3. I loved the flashbacks and how they were portrayed in the story, and how it didn't take away from the story itself but definitely helps paint the picture it is supposed to.

4. Loved the camaraderie between the characters.

5. Bullying in well written and not cringe .

All in all, it kept my interest and I am excited to see how the story progresses in the next book.

My head is literally spinning non stop with so many thoughts right now… I knew from the very first page, I wouldn’t put this book down until I finished. Guess what??? I was totally right! I usually mention the character’s names in my reviews and I won’t with this one. The reason I won’t is, because I don’t know how to mention any of them and not give anything away…. Seriously there is so much in this book, I can’t even believe it! I have so many questions that I need answers to. OMG…. Don’t even get me started on the ending…. I could literally feel my heart pounding so fast and yes I was screaming….. I need the next book now….. I’m totally addicted and not okay right now!

Definitely one of my top favorites this year! A really good plot that hooks you immediately, I didn't want to stop reading. The characters and their development was very well-written. 📚 I received this book, from the author in preparation for the second book, TITLE. When Wyatt’s best friend disappears, she is hell bent on finding out what happened to him. She goes to extremes in convincing everyone she’s a male at an all boy’s prep school. Wyatt is convinced the secret society has something to do with Thomas’s disturbing last text.
I had a lot of hope for this book, dark, secret societies, a school setting, but was pretty let down. I did not download the Kindle version, but had a doc sent to me from the author, but there were a lot of typos. The characters all seemed the same, and the story just fell flat. After 300 something Kindle pages, we were left on a cliffhanger. Also, how do none of these boys notice that Wyatt is a girl, even with her hair cut off. I am also all for LGBTQIA+ representation, but this book made it out to be that all of the boys at this boys school were into Wyatt (as a guy), which just seems very unrealistic. I may read the second one, I may not… not a lot of spice, and there was so much potential.

Great first book that could go excellent or not so great into book two.

Likes:
- the heroine, Wyatt, her personality, her humor, her hardship background; she was very likable
- a heroine disguised as a boy in an all boys academy
- Wyatt’s plans at infiltration to find out what happened to her best friend
- the heroes, Monty, Percy, Ulysses, and maybe her roommate Jacob, though their personalities weren’t distinct
- Wyatt’s new best friend, Jameson, who knows her secrets though I didn’t like the stereotypical lgbtq+ portrayal
- the secret society subplot and how Wyatt was trying to get to the bottom of what happened to her best friend, Thomas, and his disappearance
- flashbacks were done well
- character camaraderie was great
- the bullying
- wyatt’s roommate, Jacob, whom I suspect knows she’s a girl and is infatuated with her.

Dislikes:
- slow plot progression but my interest was maintained; if book 2 doesn’t reveal anything, and the plot continues to lack spice, I will likely lose interest
- somewhat overly descriptive of the spaces, the scenery; I don’t need to know how many paintings are on in the walls
- no sex
- stereotyping lgbtq+ though I would want to know how they feel about their characterization
- bad boy bully characters weren’t fully distinctive; one hero’s personality bled into another

Still, I was well-entertained and will probably reach for book 2.

MOOD: dark, challenging, adventurous, mysterious, tense
TROPES: gender switch, enemies to lovers (to be seen), friends to lovers (to be seen)
GENRES: bully and academy romance
FAV QUOTE:

MAIN CHARACTERS: Wyatt Farely (FMC), Jacob Hudson, Ulysses Cardwell III, Percy Blackborne, Montgomery "Monty" Langley

Overall, I think this is a decent start to a series but it needs both more bullying from the boys and more preying from the girl. Keep in mind I typically don't read Academy romances cause I don't prefer 17-year-old characters and the setting doesn't make sense to me cause the characters never go to class.

THE GOOD: I like this more than I thought I would given that I usually don't enjoy bully romances even though I like enemies-to-lovers. Most of the main and supporting characters are well described (there are some gay stereotypes) as well as the environment of Somerhaven Academy - so you do get quickly immersed in this fairly unwelcoming world. It was humourous (an realistic/grounding) that there were a couple of characters that didn't fall for Wyatt's disguise and knew she was a girl - that gave the story a little more realism in this world of secret societies and over-the-top wealth & teenagers w/o consequences. This was a quick read, with the second half grabbing my attention way more than the first half and really only took a day once I got into it. I also think the ending was in a good spot so that I look forward to reading book 2 and I'm not annoyed which is how I usually feel about cliffhangers.

THE NEUTRAL: The first half of the story drags. There isn't much personality differentiation between the three guys (Percy, Monty, and Ulysses) in The Pride so they come across as generic rich guys and I hope that changes in book two. It wasn't a deal breaker but I was not a fan of how Wyatt's arousal was described - it felt really over the top, like I was reading an Omegaverse story - and given the small amount of sexual content in this book, particularly between main characters, it felt out of place.

THE MEH: I didn't like Wyatt. Her story could have been really interesting and there are snippets of that when she has flashbacks but once she gets to Somerhaven, she has no plan at all - it's clear she didn't have one prior to getting there - and, even she acknowledges, she all of a sudden boy crazy. This book isn't that dark - there is a note in the TW that this book is rather light compared to the ones that will follow so I hope that's true. The bullying is really inconsistent across the story.

CW: (provided by author) dubcon/noncon, violence, sexual assault and violence, bullying, drugs, alcohol, mentions of murder and death
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. This is my honest review.

This novel is about Wyatt Farley. Wyatt's best friend, Thomas went missing while attending an all male prestigious school in upstate New York, Somerhaven Academy. Wyatt then decides to get a scholarship to this school and solve the mystery of what happened to Thomas. Both Wyatt and Thomas were poor. Wyatt is also a girl. So she cuts all her hair off and pretends to be a boy. There are 3 boys who Wyatt suspects. Ulysses Cardwell III, Percy Blackborne, Monty Langley. These boys are involved with a secret society at the school, The Order of Orchids and Lions. The Order, like most robed secret societies, is not up to anything good. Think abuse of power and degrading young women sexually. Wyatt becomes a target of Ulysses, Monty, and Percy. What is very confusing is these boys are all "straight " but find themselves attracted to the boy version of Wyatt. Wyatt is also highly attracted to her fellow scholarship recipient and roommate, Jacob Hudson. There is 1 person Wyatt can confide in and trust. What will happen if the school, the boys, and the people who run the Order find out what Wyatt really is? Will Wyatt ever find out what happened to Thomas? This book ends unresolved with a big cliffhanger. I believe there are 4 more books planned for the series that have not been written yet. The next book will be a lot about Wyatt's roommate, Jacob. All of the spying Wyatt did finally caught up to her/him. I'm still searching for the truth in a field of liars. There are a lot of trigger warnings. I like the flashback scenes Wyatt has when her and Thomas were kids. I especially liked when Wyatt told Thomas if he said Wyatt was a boy name, they could not be friends. I also like there are a few chapters told from the boys point of view. Predominantly this novel is told from Wyatt's point of view. I would live to see more insight from the boys, all of them.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ends on a cliffhanger.

High school juniors in an academy. FMC, Wyatt, sneaks into the all-boys school to find her missing best friend, Thomas. She definitely displays a lot of teenage girl energy when she's trying to pose as a male student, though she does try at times to pass by pitching her voice lower sometimes, and wearing a binder sometimes. Doesn't seem like she's doing them constantly, and she does shriek or yell a lot too (which would betray her voice since girls yell at higher pitches). I'm surprised only Jameson figured it out (one of the few gay students in the school, but maybe the only openly gay one).

Of course, she catches the eye of The Pride, or the 3 kings, legacy students Ulysses, Percy, and Monty, whose fathers and grandfathers also went to the school and started the Secret Society. And she also has a gorgeous roommate that she ogles (but tries not to but it's still pretty obvious), Jacob, that's a scholarship student like her and the rest of their floor--not rich like the rest of the school.

The writing jumps between a few POVs but mostly stays within Wyatt's, so it's at the high school teenage girl level where she's super naive and gets into all kinds of trouble with no preservation.

Read the trigger warnings since there are mentions and on-page descriptions of underage assault by much older adults, and then the usual warnings around dark bully academia romance. This is an FMC-focused only RH. Seems like there won't be any MM within the harem, sadly, since several, if not all, of the guys have expressed their views on NOT wanting to do anything with other guys.

This was one of my favorite thriller romance reads of this year! This book is like the movie She’s the Man’s twisted step sibling. I absolutely loved Wyatt’s character, her interactions with the male love interests, and the whole secret society vibe. I loved the writing. I loved the plot. However, there are no happy endings to this book and it ends off on a cliff hanger. I absolutely devoured this book and I’m waiting in anticipation for the sequel!
I genuinely cannot wait to read the next book and will be stalking the author’s page for more details! Make sure to check trigger warnings before reading!

Description:
Wyatt Farley decides to enroll in an all boys school to figure out what happened to her best friend Thomas who goes missing after sending Wyatt a bunch of concerning texts about someone being after him. He was making friends. He was seeming to flourish. But those “friends” he made? They likely are connected to a secret society known as The Order of Orchids & Lions.
What went so wrong and caused this terrible turn of events?
Wyatt was wrong in believing that her friend was just paranoid when he starts to not return her calls/texts. She decides to take things into her own hands and present herself as a boy at Somerhaven Academy after applying for a scholarship, which she is rewarded. She disguises herself as a boy, cuts off her hair, binds her chest, and takes it upon herself to learn about what happened to her best friend and make them pay.

This is a dark, twisty ride into the murky world of Somerhaven Academy, an all-boys school, through the eyes of our fearless FMC, Wyatt. Yes, an FMC at an all boys school! Determined to uncover the truth about her best friend Thomas’s mysterious disappearance, Wyatt takes on the challenge of infiltrating the academy disguised as a boy.

Her infiltration mission throws her into the paths of three potentially dangerous students: Ulysses, Percy, and Monty. Ulysses charms with his kind smile and dry British humour. Percy, the silent enigma. And Monty -he’s the wild card. But let’s not forget Jacob, Wyatt’s roommate, who’s got a suspiciously intense interest in her. Could he know her secret?

The plot thickens as Wyatt navigates through the twisted social hierarchy of Somerhaven. The spice is a very slow burn, with only one forced encounter, but a lot of longing.

The whole girl-disguised-as-boy-at-an-all-boys-school trope is handled brilliantly, and the quartet of boys each brings their own distinct quirks to the table. The mystery of the secret society and Thomas’s disappearance keeps you hooked, with flashbacks adding depth to the story. Jacob, the roommate, is clearly more than he seems, adding another layer of suspense.

The lack of more explicit spicy scenes might be a letdown for some. They are all quite young by dark romance standards as well, so keep that in mind.

And then... WHY?! The cliffhanger is brutal. Far out, I’m desperate for the next book, When a Boy Hungers.

This book was so much more then I expected it to be. One that had me hooked until the very end. This was more focused on the plot; which added to the depth of the character development and the relationships that are being formed. So this is a slow burn, but I didn’t mind because of all the mystery behind the disappearance, secret society, and all the twists and turns throughout.

So how far would you go to find out what happened to you best friend? Well Wyatt seems like she will go through the depths of the unknown to do so. She shaved her head and ditched her girly appearance to become the male version of herself. Just in order to blend in at Somerhaven Academy an all boys school; so that she could go undercover and start investigating the mystery disappearance of her friend. On her journey to find answers she gets the attention on the The Pride three guys who are the kings of the school, and the ones that she believes has the answers that she so desperately wanting. Then we have her roommate who she gravitates towards, who dislikes them and warns Wyatt to stay away. Which is easier said then done especially with the unknown pull they feel towards her…well him. Then just when you think that we are going to get some answers we are hit with this devastating freaking cliffhanger!! I am so needing the next book already!

How far would you go to find your best friend if they suddenly went missing? After a text message thread that ends abruptly Wyatt has to figure out the answer. She decides that she is going to travel to a private school and search for her friend who she believes has gone missing after a run in with a secret society that operates on campus. The problem is the school is for boys. Not only does Wyatt have to stay off the radar of the Secret Society but also navigate being the new kid. Can she manage to keep her secret while searching for clues? Will her worst nightmare be true that Thomas is not only missing but has been murdered?

I enjoyed this book! It is very plot driven and C.A Jay does a great job at bringing Somerhaven Academy to life. I do not have much experience with bully romance but this is a very key trope to this story. Wyatt has a very likable personality and the friendships that she builds while on campus had me laughing out loud. Jameson is the best friend every girl wishes she had! The gender swap aspect of the story reminded me of “She’s The Man”. This book does have some spicy scenes but a majority of it is slow burning desire. 3/5 🌶️ I look forward to the next book in the series!

How much does your best friend mean to you?

This story answers this question when Wyatt (FMC) goes undercover as a boy in an all-boy’s school to find out what happened to her best friend, Thomas. This dark why choose is the first installment in The Order of Orchids and Lions series. It’s full of mystery and suspense with a secret society, heavy bullying. Wyatt is focused on three boys: Monty, Ulysees, and Percy. They were supposed to be friends of Thomas. To get into the all-boy’s school, she has to enter as a boy. She finds herself attracted to the three plus her roommate, Jacob. Wyatt stumbles onto a secret society which increases the tension and mystery around Thomas’s disappearance.

This story grabs you from the first page and keeps you invested to the last page. This author does an amazing job world building and adding tension to the story. This does end in a cliffhanger. I am more than ready to read the next installment.

Please be advised. There are a lot of triggers in this story. Please be aware there is vi0lenc3 directed toward the FMC, dub/con, and bullying.

Wyatt Farely has been accepted to Somerhaven Academy, an all-boys school, applying there to find out what happened to her friend, Thomas, who disappeared. And she (yes, she’s a girl!) has to keep her identity quiet while she secretly investigates. Her primary targets are The Pride, a trio who had befriended Thomas & then turned the school against him before he disappeared. And who she thinks are members of the school’s (unconfirmed) secret society, The Order of Orchids and Lions.

I was hooked and intrigued by the storyline of the secret society and loved the glimpses of what is found out by Wyatt, though it also makes me wonder just how much Monty, Ulysses, & Percy (The Pride) know about TOOL and whose side will they be on.
There’s not a lot of steamy scenes in book one, but there’s enough for Wyatt to slowly realize she has a praise k*nk. And enough that I think have some of the guys’ questioning their attraction to the new “boy” on campus. I anticipate more secrets to be revealed with an increase in spice in book two and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Wyatt BF disappears after one last text message. Her BF was going to a elite school and a scholarship. So Wyatt applied and got in so she can investigate to find out what happened to her best friend. This elite school is a boys only. She has a intense passion to find out what happened to her BF. This is a must read and can’t wait for the next book. This is the first book I've read by the author and C.A. Jay did not disappoint! This was a 4.5 ⭐️ 0 🌶️read for me but regarding the 🌶️ I'm thinking it'll pick up in the next book!

The tropes/things I found and loved in this book...

Enemies to lovers, secret identity, why choose, slower plot, secret society, mystery, flash backs, bullying, and a cliff hanger leaving you needing the next book like you need to breathe.

Our fmc, Wyatt wants to find out what happened to her best friend and disguises herself as a boy at an all boys academy to find out the truth. Here you meet her roommate Jameson who I suspects knows more and is infatuated with Wyatt. There's Monty, Percy and Ulysses who are the kings. Then add in the secret society will Wyatt be able to uncover the truth and survive?

I would love to see more of the boys povs and see the character development and growth!

Ready to read book 2!

This is the first CA Jay book that I've read and I found it enjoyable and read it in one sitting. Wyatt is the kind of friend we all would love to have, the kind that will do anything for you and will stop at nothing to find you again or find out what happened to you in this case.
This is the first book in a new series so it is laying the groundwork to build the world they are in and establish a long term plot and areas for character development. I liked all of the characters well enough but there are many development opportunities in the coming books.
This isn't heavy on spice but I'm sure it will increase once the harem is more established and some of that aforementioned character development happens.
I'm looking forward to where the series will go and enjoyed the first book enough to keep reading.
