Prescription for Love is an MM romance featuring a slow burn, hurt/comfort, opposites attract in a delightful small town setting with a rewarding HEA.
Ellis Colton writes contemporary and paranormal m/m romance, usually while listening to inspiring film scores. In addition to writing and reading m/m, she enjoys crocheting and beading, bad disaster movies, Supernatural, ice cold vodka, and puns.
I was really enjoying this until I wasn’t. For such a short book they spent a good deal of it apart. I also didn’t care for the repetition in their inner monologues. In the beginning I was looking up other books by Ellis Colton, but by the end I decided we weren’t a good fit.
An ok read for me, I found it a bit dragged out here and there but not enough to stop reading it. A sweet romance plus some angst as two busy men, a doctor and a sheriff, try for a relationship.
3/5 This had many cute elements but didn’t quite come together for me. At the beginning, it felt like we were getting more actual scenes with Jake and Joey than Jake and Troy. And then it felt like Joey for dropped hard. (It built to something explosive and hugely dramatic, way more than I expected, then basically disappeared.) For a book that was all about Jake and Troy, and that took place over months, I just didn’t feel as a reader that I actually got to see Jake and Troy spend that much time together or really understand their interests (apart from being a sheriff and a doctor).
The time jumps sometimes threw me a bit (it just felt like time was running by but we weren’t seeing it), though I appreciated that we got some distance from Troy’s bad break-up. I wish we’d got to see Troy and Jake spending more time together, which would have backed up what they were feeling by the end and given it the emotional weight that I couldn’t quite feel.
I thought the cover was adorable, the nosy friends and coworkers meant well (and actually gave pretty good advice, generally), and Jake and Troy were cute together when we actually got to see them interact. I thought the final scene was cute.
I'm a huge fan of small town romances and in particular ones where one of the couple is only scheduled to be in the small town for a limited time. This story by Ellis Colton perfectly fits that bill. Sheriff Jake Gutierrez has built a good life for himself in the small Texas town of Lamesa and he thinks everything is just dandy with his love life. He has the opportunity to have fun with no strings attached. One of the people he has some fun with is the new doctor in town, Troy Cooper. Troy is trying to get over a bad breakup and he's decided to do that by serving his residency in Lamesa. He and Jake are in agreement that no-strings fun is the way to go, until circumstances force them to reconsider how they actually feel about each other and what that means for their future. The author did an excellent job of showing us these men weighing their options and what they wanted their lives to be like going forward - what opportunities were out there in the big, wide world and what opportunities could Lamesa offer. I'll definitely be looking for more from this Ellis Colton.
I really enjoyed this sort of laid back romance. The main characters are guys established in their career paths. Jake is a sheriff in a small town. That makes everything he does community knowledge including his relationship issues. Troy is in his final steps of becoming a doctor. When he has relationship problems, his only choice is to move to a totally different town. Troy and Jake neither are looking for a relationship. Both plan on being friends and find they can go about their jobs yet meet and enjoy time together. Then Troy is offered a chance career wise that is almost impossible to turn down. The only issue is he will have to relocate again. There are many twists and issues involved in this story. I enjoyed it being about men able to decide what future they wanted.
This book was really enjoyable. I liked the maturity in the way the characters navigated their blossoming relationship and the associated conflicts throughout their story. There's understandable reluctance that holds them both back, but ultimately they overcome their hangups and stop trying to deny their inevitable happily ever after. 😊
A bit too tell-y for me - I dont need to know he walked to his closet and picked a shirt sort of thing. The story was fine - quite short but packed everything in. Story, ine seemed to jump - they didn’t see each other for a few weeks - but then seemed to refer to things happening a few days ago. The Joey storyline disappeared. It was ok, but needed to be a but tighter for me to fully enjoy
3.5 stars. A solid well balanced story with interesting characters. The thoughts and feelings of the MCs felt very realistic, especially those around their "breakup". A good book for a debut. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.
This is the first book I've read by this author and it's amazing. I love small town romances and this one was done well. It's a slow burn, hurt/comfort read about Jake and Troy.
