Through the Wall #1

So Fell Are the Fae

Rate this book
A hunted witch. A cursed fae lord. A dying land.

Innara thought she knew what it was to be hunted as a witch in a world of humans. But when she falls through the Wall into Faerie, land of her mortal enemies, she’s quickly captured by a far more deadly foe.

Winter Court Lord, Kir, is ruthless and wastes no time imprisoning Innara in his dying court. Her pleas to go home are ignored. No one should be able to cross the Wall. However, he agrees to strike a bargain: a piece of her soul and the use of her strange magic to help solve the mystery of his decaying world in exchange for his help to find a way home.

But Innara isn’t just a wayward witch—she’s the greatest threat to his life.

She’s his fated mate, the one creature who can kill the powerful immortal lord. Bound by a curse, Kir will never know true love’s touch lest he surrenders his power to an opposing court. So he’s forced to keep his mate at a distance while they race against time and enemies to save all of Faerie.

And she can never know.

So Fell Are the Fae is the first book in the Through the Wall trilogy. This slow burn, enemies-to-lovers fae fantasy is perfect for those who love fated mates, he-falls-first, witches, curses, angst, and lots of twists and turns.

This is the kind of fantasy we all deserve 🖤🔥
The worldbuilding, the characters and the plot. I love literally everything about this book and especially that I knew from the start where the traps were, yet I wasn't bored for a second and was still surprised in the end. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Innara is literally the jackpot. She's kind, empathetic and openminded. Yes, she's also a bit naive because she doesn't understand malice, but she doesn't let anyone get her down and I'm thrilled with her resilience.

The situation between her and Kir is difficult but unfortunately pretty damn hot - the slow burn hurts so good - "touch me and I die" is probably a whole new subgenre and I really need to read more of it. So. Much. More.

Every expectation I could have had was met - I'm beyond thrilled and selfishly hoping I don't have to wait very long for the next book.

Thank you so much for trusting me with this ARC, Kat. It was a pleasure to read your book 🖤

Read. This. Book.

I haven’t read a book that fast in a while but I was totally hooked. Plot twists I did not see coming and character arcs I am fully invested in. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

And Kir? He’s a book boyfriend you need in your life. Stat. <3

I found this book on Booksirens and I am SO thankful I stumbled upon this book. This fantasy romance set in a mix of modern day human/witch lands and fae lands was fantastic. The characters were SO well written. I cannot believe this is Kat Keenan’s debut novel. Do yourself a favor and read this one!

Okay, I’m ready to pour my heart out and unrealistically demand the second book now!
(This book ranks in my top 3 reads for this year).

I LOVED this book! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and consumed a good portion of it in the past 3 days.

1st: Innara is the perfect FMC. She wasn’t air headed, she was smart and always asked the right questions (it truly satisfied an itch in my brain for a competent FMC).

2nd: Kir was so complex and I loved it, he had so many feelings and it was amazing to see him think it all out and follow that journey—personally I think that’s the best thing a writer can do, I love being lost in characters!

3rd: the adventures, and side characters are just amazing.

DO NOT SKIP THIS BOOK! If you love fae and romance, this is the book.
I’ve been craving a read like this and Kat Keenan did it!

I’d love to thank Kat Keenan for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC of this book and was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking this book! It was a tad bit slow for me at first, but once she fell through the wall and I really started getting invested in the story, I could not put it down! The magical system is very interesting, having both Witches and Fae whom use 2 different kinds of magic; one of which Fae cannot see, leading them to fear and/or use the Witches. There is even some forms of magic that not all of the Witches know, as some live within the Fae realm and some within the human realm. All the characters are very well written, which draws you into the story even more. The slow burn situation between Kir and Innara is devastatingly written - what is worse than finding your mate but not being able to touch them and having to try to push them away in order to stay alive. It hurts so good and I am rooting for them so hard!

There were so many twists in this story with one major "A-ha!" moment that had me giddy with anticipation for the reveal when I started to piece things together! With so much chaos going on at the end of the book, I was shell shocked when I got to the last page and saw the "to be continued" at the end. I need more! I cannot wait to see where things will go from here!

WOW! Calling all fantasy buffs! Dive into this one ASAP. It's like stepping into a fairytale, and who doesn't need that escape? You will not be disappointed! The plot was full of twists and turns that kept me up way past my bedtime on multiple occasions. The writing style perfectly builds the world and characters, and really feels like you're hanging out with friends the whole time. There is just the right amount of spice without it feeling forced. I felt myself really leaning into the hope and fear the characters feel. I am so thrilled that a second book is already in the works. This genuinely was one of my favorites reads of 2023!

Overall Impression:
A five-star journey through a captivating fae fantasy that will leave you spellbound.

My first thought upon finishing this book was - 'I need the next book pronto!'. If you liked acotar, you're sure to enjoy this one. There are some similarities- a wall that separates the land of humans vs the land of faerie and courts for each of the seasons but that's where the similarities end. There's fantastic world building that makes you feel like you can picture everything happening. A touch of spice that hints at more to come. A complex magical system for both fae and witches alike. I can't wait to read more in this universe and to see what happens between Kir and Innara.

Soooo much sexual tension in this book as they are fated mates but hes cursed. I gotta say I was disppointed that they didnt break the curse in this book and how long it took him to tell her that she was his fated mate. Otherwise I enjoyed the story! I cannot wait to read the next book to see what happens. I recieved a free advanced reader copy of this book and im leaving this review voluntarily.

Overview:
So Fell Are The Fae by Kat Keenan is book one in her unfinished [as of Oct 2023] series, Through The Wall. It’s written in first person from 2 character POVs, MFC and MMC, with some small overlaps. SFATF took me on a unique fantasy adventure full of alliances, deceit, fated love and learning how to find oneself. I love how Keenan wrote the ending in such a way to wrap up the story but insinuating what the next book will be about.

Nitty Gritty **No Spoilers**
- Setting/World Build: The story takes place in 2 “worlds,” Eastlands and Faerie. The first being an earth-like universe, the second being a world of fae, full of monsters and unbridled magic (or so the humans think). The worlds are separated by a physical wall which possesses magic. Both worlds believed the wall was built to ensure their respective safety, but that may not be true.. Keenan hit it out of the park with a new (to me) and unique way to connect the human and fae realms. Also, the story isn’t stationary and Keenan provided amazing details of the various locations.
- Character Build: As is in a lot of fae or fantasy books, there were a variety of different beings. I appreciate how Keenan had the traditional witch magic but also gave the readers her own unique ideas, ex. Macachera. Keenan provides current details of the support characters but not much more than an overview of their backgrounds or how they crossed paths. Innara, the MFC, is a passive yet determined, young and inexperienced life witch. I love how Keenan wrote her Innara’s POV. She is strong-willed and has so much heart, but she’s scared to believe in herself and let it out. Then comes Kir, the MMC. He’s the strongest lord in Cirrelea and on the outside, he acts like it. Keenan makes sure to let us know that he is barely holding it together through his POV though. If you can’t tell yet, I LOVE the way Kat Keenan has written these characters. She made sure to provide depth and volume to each one, and it shows!
- Plot: Right out the gate there is family drama, lover’s quarrels, secrecy and born enemies. Then said enemies make a bargain to work together so that they can both get what they are after. There are betrayals, fights, near-deaths, and death. But there is also friendship, self-sacrifice and finding one’s self. By the end of the book, a few major realizations are discovered and their goals have shifted slightly. For those looking for the smut talk…. It’s low spice and slow-burning, but the way Keenan writes it has me at the edge of my seat. I will say that there are some very intriguing dreams… and OH, I can’t leave out that the Fae apparently have some really good wine. *wink wink*

Final Thoughts:
I already loved all things fantasy, and So Fell Are the Fae by Kat Keenan did not disappoint at all. It is a very well written first installment to her Through the Wall series. I am looking forward to the second book, and cannot wait to read about Innara and Kir’s adventure in the Eastlands.

First off I must just say I need book two IMMEDIATELY!! Second though I will tell y’all if you’re looking for a book with a new twist on the Fae romantasy than may I just say I highly recommend picking up Kat Keenan’s So Fell are the Fae. This books has a little bit of everything! If you love enemies to lovers romance, this book has it, if you’re looking for fated mates… look no further, found family is a check, a female lead that starts off a bit sheltered and naïve but fights her way into become a strong and dependable MC… absolutely, a strong alphahole MMC who is secretly a bit of a cinnamon roll, and enough twists and turns to keep you up to the wee morning hour well then look no further! This book has something for all readers.

I really couldn’t put this book down, the characters had me from page one!! Innara is a bit sheltered and naive when it comes to the outside world and how things work and sometimes that’s a real character flaw for me with FMC but Keenan wrote this so perfectly with just the right amount of character development happening as the book progressed that it made me love Innara because she never left her naivety slow her down or stop her from trying to grow and become better!! She was so relatable, honestly I felt like she was kinda like if you dropped romantasy readers into their favorite books if they’d never read them before so her growth was something I actually enjoyed reading! And her powers I loved especially at the end but I won’t spoil anything for y’all! And let’s not forget how even in her growing and learning she was never afraid to put those who needed it in their place!! And the banter between her and Kir was great! I can’t wait to see more in book two!! And of course I can’t leave out how much I loved Kir!! He was just the right mix of broody, alphahole, with a heart of gold!! He protected his people, and his court with little thought to his own happiness… a truly decent king! And even though he pretty much hated Innara on site he was willing to look past his prejudices and help her out which I’ll be honestly immediately added him to the book bf list!!

But I don’t want to spoil to much for your guys because honestly you’ll be drawn in from page one and I feel like if I tell you anything more it could be a spoiler! So I’ll just say this book is a must read for all romantasy lovers who want an interesting take on the human/Fae relationship and an interesting mash of modern world colliding with the more fantasy or historical world!!

HAPPY READING 📖

I liked this one. I had an interesting mix of Fae and witches as well as a kind of dual setting. On the human side of a magical wall the setting is modern with lots of tech (though we see little of it as the FMC, Innara, and her mother live out in the forest away from cities), but it's also bordering on apocalyptic, I think? Innara describes that there's a lot of pollution/contamination and resources are spread thin.

On the Fae side of the wall the magic is failing and they are all in quite a lurch. But this remains more of a "ye olde world" setting, obviously because the Fae have (well had) magic and therefore don't need tech.

An unfortunate series of circumstances lands Innara on the Fae side of the wall, and she doesn't know how to manage it. Luckily, she end up with Kir who offers her "sort of" safety in exchange for her help. . . and maybe another reason, too. Hehehe! Cue unwanted pining and attempts to avoid.

I thought the pacing and action was good as well as the developments between Innara and Kir. I also enjoyed that the side characters and villains were also well developed.

Innara is young (she's 22 ), but also has been raised very suppressed and isolated so navigating a new and dangerous situation was a true feat. She struggles terribly to trust herself and it's sad ( and maybe a little frustrating, though I do understand why she is this way). She also regularly disregards things (like situation puzzle bits) that popped into her own mind (obviously she's innately clever and has good intuition) but she was trying so hard to make things align with what she knew in her very limited scope. I was shaking the book so many times screaming, "did you not just hear what your own brain told you?!! AAhhhh!" It took an extreme situation towards the end for her to finally stop pushing things down and let the pieces fall into place.

And none of that ^^^ is a bad thing, just not super my preference these days.

#Through the Wall series (Book-1)
So Fell Are the Fae

Summary
A cursed Fell fae lord and a powerful witch, unaware of her powers, when comes close to each other, they feel a strong bond between them. The Fae world considers witches as a threat to their lives, the magic is slowly vanishing from Fae world. The lord of the Faerie land, enters a bargain with the Witch, to save his people and his land from the curse and only the witch can help him out of this situation and in return he offers her to find the way to her home safely.
Kir, the cursed lord of the fae world, the king of the three courts the Winter, Autumn and Spring court, was never to feel love's touch and the one person who could kill him, his fated mate.
Innara, a witch who can't harness her magic, chased by her father's magic hunters, has nowhere to go except through the Walls which seperates the human from the Fae world.
This is such a beautiful story, I really don't know how to express in words. The attraction they both feel for each other, the moments where they think they couldn't believe each other yet the trust in them, their chemistry, will make you believe in love.

Why choose this book?
-Romantic fantasy
-Fae fantasy
-Slow burn
-Strong FMC
-Enemies to lovers
-Mature

First off this is a beautiful cover. I was sucked right into this book. The world building is so good. The FMC, Innara, is a little naive in the beginning and I think that’s directly related to how she was kept so in the dark and lied to about everything growing up. It seems like she really comes to terms with things by then end and she does figure some things out on her own but it just leads to more questions. The MMC, kir, tries so hard to keep his distance but he just can’t. It gives he falls first vibes which I love. It’s a lot of push and pull from him, he struggles with his emotions because of his curse. I definitely need more backs story on what happened between kir and Gaelin. Did he turn on kir purely because he was jealous? There isn’t any spice in this book but it is a slow burn. I’m so excited to see how this story unfolds in the second book!

I loved the dedication and this quote

“To everyone who has felt like they don’t fit in.”

“Sometimes it is the small things, the innocent things, the there-to-just-be-enjoyed things are what is needed most. We all have value.” His cheeks became infused with pink, and my chest warmed.

This one captured my interest with the first sentence " Blood steamed in the snow, bright red and carving dents into the pristine white". Who or what's blood? Isn't this a romance book? Yes, yes it is.

I loved Innar's character she is so feisty and full of life. She's ready to take on the world and is tired of things being kept secret from her. Her whole life she has been told to stay away from the wall that separates humans from Fae and then her mother tells her if she's ever in trouble to touch the wall. Say WHAT? Of course, touching the wall comes sooner rather than later of course and she ends up in an ice cave with a fae male named Kir. Of course, he is dreamy and everything she could ever want if she didn't think fae are terrible monsters.

I found the world-building to be enough to draw me in but not too much to distract me or overwhelm me. the character-building was great made me feel like I was right there. There is some spice, but nothing too drastic. It all went together to form a great story.

P.S. The only thing I hate is I have to wait for book 2: So Wicked are the Witches. Hopefully, it won't be too long. If you like fairy romance books with a little bit of smut this could be the book for you.

A little predictable, but overall a highly enjoyable fae romantasy read! Slow burn, enemies to lovers and a brief one horse moment are some of the tropes. My only negative is that this book ends on a huge cliffhanger and we need more ASAP!

Innara is a witch and resides in the human world with her mother. She was raised to hate the fae who live on the other side of the wall. When magic hunters corner her, Innara is forced to escape to the other side of the wall and runs into Kir, a fae Lord. He’s stand-offish and immediately does not trust Innara.

Innara grew up sheltered and naive but she is also strong and not afraid to speak her mind. She is extremely relatable and likeable and I want to be her bff. Kir is the ultimate dark and broody book boyfriend with a heart of gold. His curse is heart-breaking and explains his behavior and why he is so untrustworthy of Innara. The enemies to lovers slow burn romance is so good and we get just enough spice that makes sense with the story and is not over done.

Can’t wait for book two!

I was sent an e-arc copy for review by the author. Thank you Kat Keenan again for the opportunity!

We follow Innara who is a witch who lives in the human realm and is in hiding from her father. Why? She doesn't know exactly but she knows that it is dangerous to be a witch. While running from her father's men, she somehow steps through the wall that separates the human lands with the Fae lands. She meets a Fae Prince, Kir, who is cursed and can't have anyone touch him or he will die. He is searching for a way so save the dying Fae lands. They strike a bargain that if Innara helps Out, they would find a way to get Innara back home to her mother.

I love this story! The fact that he fell first but he will die if he's touched gives an interesting twist!

I really like Innara's journey to self confidence and learning to control her magic.

I love how Kitr earns to break the curse.

Overall I love this book and can't wait for what Kat writes next!

I received an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The worldbuilding in SFATF is amazing. A story of two worlds separated by a wall of magic, a naive sheltered witch and cursed fae lord bound to find the reason behind the waning magic in the Fae realm.

The character development is great. The MMC, Kir, battles with himself and his feelings throughout the book. His inner monologue hit close to home. He's such a cutie. Although naive, the FMC, Innara, is quick on her feet. She is caring but doesn't let others overstep her.
Side characters are also a great addition and a team the MC can rely on. Among them, I must say Haze is the cutest of them all.

Kat Keenan's writing style is easy to read. It doesn't feel rushed neither lingers on mere detail. You can picture this fantasy world without an issue.
I can't decide whether SFATF is a slow burn or he falls first read.

If you enjoy romantasy and fae, you can't miss this read!

I really did love this book! It was a great, easy read from start to finish. I look forward to the sequel!

I loved the development of the FMC from an "in the dark" witch to a strong badass who can hold her own against evil male fae. That arc, along with excellent world building, kept me in this after an couple of false starts (of my own making) getting into this world.

My only thing keeping this from 5 stars is I wished at least a couple of the plot elements of the story had been put to bed. Of course "home" is the main driver, but other elements of the story were left hanging. Felt a bit like I read half a book and then just stopped. But, alas, that is the nature of series I guess. I just didn't expect to be left hanging on everything!

Overall, I'm here for this! <3

This begins a journey of growth, balance, trust, and magic for Innara, a sheltered and naïve witch, and Kir, king of the Fae Winter Court. A true battle of good vs. evil. This first installment feels a bit slow at the start and kind of throws you in where you don’t know who is actually the good guy or if they all are untrustworthy. As the tale progresses, it drew me in and made me feel fully invested in Innara's growth, maturity, and the outcome of Kir’s actions. Their strength of character, honesty, and playful banter, add to the enjoyment of this tale. The twists and turns of the storyline keep you reading to the end, and the cliffhanger was a surprise. This is a new author for me and I’m enjoying her work.

A book that is easily devoured and yet completely captivating with strong characters and a story line that consumes you.
The author did a wonderful job with the worldbuilding, transporting us to the all the wonderful places and experiences, and characters that do the storyline justice.

Kir and Innara are both amazing characters. Kit is complex and expresses many emotions and thoughts easily. Innara is a great FMC, she was strong and stood her ground without being thrown into the "damsel in distress" role. They each are strong characters alone and together. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am eager to see where the next will lead.

I love the occasional fae romance story, so I had to jump on this book.

There's a hot, cursed fae lord, a witch who can't quite use her powers, enemies to lovers trope, slowburn, fated mates and faerie apocalypse. Sigh me up! So I did..sign myself up.

So fell are the fae was such a nice read. The world building was good, I really liked the characters and loved some of the unexpected twists and turns this story took.

The side characters were fun to read. Some of them sweet, others not so much. Without spoiling the story, I really enjoyed how the characters developed in this story. With this cliffhanger, I am very curious to see how this continues in book 2.

Slow burn, enemies to lovers fae romantasy are my favourite tropes. Witches not so much, but Kat Keenan manages to balance this in a way that makes it less noticable and so does not affect the overall impression of the novel.

There was some spice in this first part of the series, but I hope it will be more steamy in the books to come. I am not a fan of fade-to-black love scenes, so hint-hint to the author. ;)

I am also very curious to learn how Kir will finally (hopefully) feel love’s touch after all.

WARNING this book ends in a cliff hanger! This is a book that draws you in and spits you out leaving you wanting book two immediately! This is an enemies to lovers romance which also has fated mates. The female MC is sheltered and naive but she fights her way to become independent and strong. Innara our MFC is flawed but she doesn't let that stop her. Innara is so relatable that it almost hurts to read through because you can relate so deeply to someone so fictional. She was never afraid to put people in their place when needed. Kiri is a mix of broody and alphahole. But he does have a heart of gold.

Oh I love a slow burn, romantasy, Fae filled book and boy does So Fell Are The Fae deliver! I love the Winter Court Fae (with the exception of one 😂) and I love that Innara is a very realistic mix of vulnerable and brave. The mix of Fae and witches is really enjoyable and brings together two of my favourite fantasy elements. The cover is stunning and I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens with Kir and Innara in future books!.

This book gripped me from the very first page. This was my first book from the author and it's definitely not my last. The story was well written, the pacing good, the characters were interesting and there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. I'm looking forward to the second book.

I liked Innara and Kir, I felt they complemented eachother well. This book is a slow burn which I felt was great, as they were two people from different worlds, who needed to learn about each other. I can already anticipate the sparks flying for the next book.

I selected this book because I was looking for something different than what I usually read.

Kir is fae from a side of the wall where magic is waning. Innara is a witch that can't control her magic. While running from hunters sent by her father Innara falls through the veil that separates their worlds.

This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers. Neither of these tropes are my personal favorite, but I wanted to give it a chance. There doesn't seem to be any tension or chemistry between the MMC or the FMC. Currently this book is in time out.
