A Wish for Christmas

Rate this book
7 hours, 59 minutes

In this heartwarming story from New York Times bestselling author Courtney Cole, an unhappily married couple makes a wish on an enchanted snow globe that they had never met, but when they wake up the next day in separate lives, the magic of Christmas helps them to realize that some love is just meant to be.

Two weeks ’til Christmas…

Noel Blake is not in a great place. After several years of marriage, she and her husband Jonah are quietly drifting apart. The only time they really talk at all anymore is when they walk their dog, Elliott. And even then it usually ends in bickering.

When, one snowy day, Elliott manages to slip his leash, they find him blocks away in the care of a mysterious old man who asks them to make a wish on an old snow globe. Eager to get their dog safely home, they agree to his strange request. Neither one realizes that the wish they’re about to make will change the course of their lives... possibly forever.

When Noel and Jonah wake up the next morning, they’re in separate beds, separate apartments, separate lives. But are they any happier? As they live the existences they’d always wished for, both feel that something very important is missing. And when a chance encounter brings the pair back together, they find they have a spark of something very special.

Will they be able to find their way back to each other before it’s too late, or does the Christmas Magic have another fate in store?

One Liner: Beautiful and heartwarming

Nora and Jack are drifting apart after a decade of marriage. Even their 205-pound mastiff, Elliot, doesn’t seem to keep them together. With busy careers and no time for anything else, the couple finds it hard to remember why they have been in love with each other since their school days.

A chance meeting with a mysterious old man (kinda like Santa), all thanks to Elliot’s escapades, gives them something to think about. When the man asks them to wish on a snow globe, the couple’s lives may change in a way no one expected.

Nora and Jack are now Noel and Jonah, still successful in their careers but leading single and separate lives. However, they continue to come face to face, and as their friendship grows into something more, they have to decide what to do with their lives.

The story comes in the first-person POV of Noel and Jonah, with the first chapter in the third-person POV about Nora and Jack.

My Thoughts:

This is about second chances, love, family, relationships, and healing. The story starts in the city (NYC) but moves to a cute small town, Winter Falls.

Set in December, we see quite a bit of snow, cold, dampness, chill, festive decorations, cooking, baking, food, etc. The city and the town are easy to visualize.

The pacing is wonderful. It doesn’t even feel like reading 360+ pages. The story continues to move and has bits of chat messages and emails inserted to add to the mix. This is pretty much a Hallmark-type book, so don’t expect any intense drama or complex situations.

Despite dealing with some heavy themes like dementia, death of loved ones, etc., the book achieves the right intensity and has many light moments between different characters.

Elliot is such a darling, you’d want to take him home (never mind that he drools all over). Moxie is another highlight of the book. I could have read an entire book with just these two.

Jace and his mother, Izzy, Noel’s parents, and a few other characters like Avery, Emily, etc., add more flavors to the plot and are good supporting characters. Not all of them get the same space, but they shine in their roles.

There seem to be minor discrepancies in the timeline, but nothing major to distract from the central plot (however, you should go with the flow).

The ending is, of course, HEA, but a bit different from what I expected. I like it enough, but there isn’t that crucial moment that should have been there based on the blurb.

To summarize, A Wish for Christmas is a heartwarming and cozy Christmas read with a super adorable dog. Read the book for Elliot!

And oh, this is a clean romance.

Thank you, NetGalley, Avon, and Harper Voyager, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This begins, briefly, the story of a married couple, and their dog Elliott on a snowy day. They have drifted apart over the years, and Elliott seems to be the only thing that keeps them together. When Elliott escapes his leash one day, they find him a few blocks away making friends with a man who owns a shop filled with old odds and ends. The owner of the shop shows them an old snowglobe, and asks them to make a wish on it.

The next morning when they wake up, she will head off to her job, and he will head off to his. They each enjoy their jobs, and their lives are exactly what they’d wished for.

Noel has a job in the publishing industry, which she loves, and a new author who is sending her the chapters he’s been writing, a little bit at a time. She loves what he’s sent, so far, and he is anxious to spend more time on his book, he really needs to focus on his writing but his dog keeps disrupting him (like my dog just did to me - walked across my hands as I was typing) and he tells her that he could get this done sooner if she would just watch over him for a while. Her parents are expecting her to visit, but now she has to bring him along. She has never traveled with a dog before, so she is surprised when they tell her that she can’t bring this dog onto the flight - and she is trying to figure out what to do when a man offers her a flight on his private plane, since she’s going where he is going.

Interwoven in this story are the stories with others who live in this town, and a crotchety old mayor who hates Christmas, and has refused to allow the town to have any Christmas decorations, or celebrations. Noel’s mother, on the other hand, wants to bring the magic of Christmas back to their town.

I look forward to each new holiday book from Courtney Cole, and I also love her thrillers. The premise in A Wish for Christmas is pretty magical, and the whole reading experience was just right for the holiday season moving into a hopeful new year.

While I read it actually around the holidays, starting December 23, I think it would still be a great winter or any time read because of all the messaging.

Overall, it’s a beautiful book inside and out, and I cherished reading it.

I received a gifted copy.

Still engrossed in my Christmas reading binge, I came across this gem in, fellow GR Member, Srivalli Rekha’s reading list. First and foremost, I’d like to point out something in the book summary that was just a little confusing to me at first because incorrect book summaries are kind of a pet peeve of mine. The book summary states that Noel and Jonah were drifting apart in their marriage. Well…..the story starts out with Nora, a successful NY book editor, and Jack, a Wall St titan, drifting apart in their marriage. Nora and Jack don’t become Noel and Jonah until the next day after making a wish on a snow globe that they received from an old man named, Pad (who suspiciously sounds like a Santa lookalike based on his physical description) they met while walking their humongous, mastiff dog, Elliott.

So, the next day, Nora and Jack wake up and are Noel and Jonah and two people who simply live in the same condo building and apparently didn’t even notice each other until the night before when they shared an elevator. Oh, and Elliott? Noel is now dog sitting him for one of her prospective writers, Padrick, so that he can finish his book with no distractions, because Elliott is QUITE a handful.

It’s 10 days before Christmas and both Noel and Jonah are called back home by their respective parents because of some drama going on in town between the mayor, who sounds like a right Scrooge character, and the townspeople. They run into each other at the airport when there is a ruckus about not letting Elliott fly with Noel. When Jonah finds out that he and Noel are both going to Cheyenne, WY, Jonah conveniently offers to take Noel and Elliott to WY on his company jet. They learn later that they are both going back to the same small town, Winter Falls, where they both grew up. Oh yeah, and neither one of them has any recollection whatsoever of ever knowing each other. Good grief!!! Ok, cue up the Hallmark romance blueprint

Anyway, there are secondary storylines going on between the parents, lots of drama! One is Noel’s parents who want to create a Christmas village in the town square to make money for the town and allow the townspeople to celebrate the joy of the season, but the town Scrooge and Mayor, Jonah’s dad, won’t allow any of it. There is another secondary storyline between Jonah and his dad, who will never celebrate anything since his wife died on Christmas Eve when Jonah was six (he’s late 30’s now). This messed Jonah up and there is a lot of resentment from Jonah because his father never allowed him to talk about his mother or get professional help for the grief when he was a kid.

Most of the story flips back and forth between Noel and Jonah. Many of Noel’s chapters include emails between her and Padrick over the chapters he sends her to read, review and critique along with updates on Elliott and Moxie, the kitten Noel Elliott adopts as his companion. Most of the story is a solid 3star Christmas read.

However, I guess I would give it a 3.5 if I could because I loved the storyline around the center for dementia patients. Having experienced a few loved ones struggling with this devastating disease, my feelings toward it have evolved over time. I liked the way that the characters in the book adapted to Lizzie’s memories and lived in her world whenever they were around her. While it is heart-breaking when a loved one doesn’t recognize you anymore, it’s actually not so hard to live in their world and memories whenever you can. I didn’t know until this moment whether or not I would rate up or down on this story.

Yall know when it comes to reading I enjoy 3 things:

1.Long Depressing History books
2.Murder and Mayhem
3.Holiday/ Christmas books

A Wish For Christmas is the perfect story to be made into a Hallmark movie.

Run me that movie Hallmark!

I'm not going to say too much about this book because I just want you to read it.

Did I download 2 more Christmas books by Courtney Cole?

Umm..mind your business...but yes I did.

I recommend it!

Thursdays Reading Club.

This is my first Christmas book this year. I love reading about small towns celebrating with snow and cheer and this had all of that.
This was a different take on a Christmas story and it gave me a similar feel like, Its a Wonderful Life. It was clean and sweet with a slow burn romance and a HEA.
Thanks Harper Voyager via NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a great small town setting, dual point of view and a big, rambunctious dog named Elliott. It was sweet and funny and full of Christmas. Though I did find it confusing at times, it was a great story that kept my interest throughout and I loved it.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I know some people may think it is a little late to be reading a Christmas book, but I am extremely glad I didn't put A Wish for Christmas by Courtney Cole off until next Christmas! This book made my heart so happy and was exactly what I needed at this moment. The end made me cry, and I am glad I was in the seclusion of my car at night instead of out with people. 🤣 This was such a magical little book, and I loved how the story became something so beautiful and heartwarming. Even though his part is relatively 'small,' the old man was such a great part of the story and I loved how he was involved in the continued storyline.

The audiobook was done so well, and I highly recommend it if you are an audio fan. Vanessa Johansson voices Noel while Tim Paige voices Jonah, and I loved both of them equally. They were the perfect match for their characters in all the things, and I was glad they were the narrators. The dog Elliott really stole my heart and the show in A Wish for Christmas and just made the romance between Noel and Jonah even more endearing. I would love to see this made into a movie, and the way the last few sentences are written just screams TV movie to me. If you love animals, Hallmark movies, and Christmas then I would wholeheartedly recommend reading or listening to this book. 💖

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A Wish for Christmas is the holiday romance I was wishing for. It is a magical and captivating story, featuring endearing main characters as well as a great supporting cast (to include a 200 lb. mastiff). I loved everything about this book, which is filled with warmth and heart and wonder—and isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

A Wish for Christmas by Courtney Cole was my very first holiday read of the season, and it did NOT disappoint. This novel was absolutely adorable, and exactly what I was hoping it would be. It felt like a warm blanket around my shoulders after an afternoon out sledding or skiing, and then a good friend plopped me in front of the fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate, and put this book in my hands. It’s my definition of a comfort read.

READ THIS IF YOU ENJOY:
- Hallmark movies
- Christmas/winter vibes galore
- Small, majestic, and cozy towns like Star Hollow
- Wyoming setting
- Dual perspectives
- Clean, slow-burning romance novels
- Rambunctious dogs & sweet cats
- Characters who work in the book industry
- Family drama
- A touch of magical realism
- Reflections on loss, grief, and healing

If you’re looking for a cute, fun, and super sweet novel to kick off your holiday reading, be sure to grab a copy of A Wish for Christmas. It’s available now, and gets 4/5 stars from me!

Courtney Cole has become a go-to holiday romance author for me. For the past 3 holiday seasons now I’ve picked up her new release and haven’t been let down yet. What I love most is what she does with time. There is always ‘time’ element in her books which I find fascinating. I adored this marriage in trouble romance and the focus on kind of rediscovering their love for each other but not only she did she take them out of their comfort zone, she displaced them in time in a way. Very fun. Quick read. Read it in one sitting.
