i have a lot of feelings about this volume but mainly:
1. poor domi :( she deserves better 2. i don't really like jeanne and vanitas' relationship and the path it's taking??? i feel like if we were to have an enemies to lovers arc noé would work a lot better for that. i prefer vanitas and jeanne's former relationship where vanitas tried to court jeanne but got no actual response lol 3. roland is so cute and lovely i want to hug him
Beast of Gévaudan arc wasn't my favourite part of the series but the ending for it had all kinds of interesting stuff like Vanitas' mark. And shocking too. Noé!!! D: The whole Astolfo thing was at the same time maybe a good wake up call for Noé and kind of sad in that he lost a little of his belief that everybody can be good/reasoned with. I say that because even though I don't want him to turn a cynic, being too naïve can lead to hurt too.
But the next events were super intriguing and promise a lot of good (and surely sad...) plotlines and character developments. I felt really bad for Dominique, she was chosen (won't spoil here for what) but still she felt like she got the short end of the stick. And then she's just used for her connection to Noé. And even Jeanne "deserted" her. Give Domi something nice, please!
Something that doesn't really interest me is the love (?) stuff with Vanitas and Jeanne. It just doesn't feel real even though this volume tried so hard to make us believe so? Well, let's see what Mochizuki does with it.
"Even you, the one’s who’s forever cold, will meet someone who’ll keep you warm.”
4.5/5 This is probably my favorite volume of the series so far and though it’s focused on the aftermath of the fight against Jean-Jacques and Chloé, it certainly was just as emotional as the previous one.
Everybody is trying to survive on their own and they all have their scars and fears tattooed in their hearts but that doesn’t mean they can’t change for the better. Proof of this is Vanitas and Jeanne realizing they like each other in a romantic way and Noé accepting Vanitas as he is, flaws and all.
Astolfo too, was a victim of the circumstances, and he lost his family to some cruel vampires, making him a kid wanting nothing but blind revenge. Roland and the others cannot simply accept the existence of vampires in the human world but that doesn’t mean they have to kill each other without mercy.
On the other hand, Domi gets abducted by Mikhail, Vanitas younger brother, and now we know she and Louis were twins –you see, twins have always been a bad omen and their families didn’t care for Louis so even when he was killed, nobody blinked an eye but Domi and Noé.
I know these are fictional characters but man, for the most part, I cannot help but to get emotional over them ‘cause they deserve nothing but happiness. Jun truly makes us care about her characters and I can honestly say this has been one hell of a ride.
This ends up with a major cliff-hanger and I honestly cannot wait to read the next volume!
This volume was a bit slower than the previous one and there was less action in it but it wasn't boring. The ending is mind-blowing and the main plot is getting more and more interesting. I really like how the author slowly reveals the secrets of each character with each volume. Really good manga with great artwork. I can't wait for the next volume.
Now that much of the queer bait whiplash is out of the way, Mochizuki's building up Vanitas and Jeanne's relationship while still leaning into Noe and Vanitas's dynamic that I'm still enjoying (and am getting fanfic inspo for). The Gévaudan arc wrapped up nicely with a strong ending for Chloe and Jean Jacques. I may not have come to completely care for them, but I do understand why they care for each other. There are still plenty of conflicting parties Mochizuki's starting to scratch the surface of. I don't feel like I can trust anyone.
Speaking of trust, we can add Mikhail to the list of people I can't trust. He's clearly taking advantage of Domi's feelings for Noe (are they returned romantically?) and using it to his advantage. I find his request that the vampire infringe Vanitas's memories fascinating. Not only is this potential blood sucking not being portrayed erotically, but could potentially upend the trust the two leads have built throughout the story. I'm also curious about Mikhail's powers and what his time under the Blue Vampire was like.
We're going down a trip of Memory Lane soon if the next volume is any concern. Time to go full steam ahead before the hiatus!
i need to know what was the reason mochizuki keeps pushing vanijeanne when their development is absolutely ass and nobody believes (readers and characters in the manga) they're actually in love
p.s. i am very much not excited for the amusement park arc i can already feel that it'll rip my heart out
I'm starting to become disenchanted with this series because of the queerbaiting. Idk if it's intentional or not, but yeah, it's obviously there and it makes all the M/F relationships feel forced and flat.
I still really don’t like Jeanne she’s not an interesting character and the relationship being pushed between her and Vanitas feels so incredibly flat? Despite the time they’ve spent together it just doesn’t really….. spark anything? But the story itself was good once you got past that! Can’t wait for the next one.

A surprisingly heart-warming conclusion to the tale of Chloe and the Beast of Gevaudin…but the sinister scheming of Lord Ruthven continues. Back in Paris, Vanitas, hilariously, thinks he is dying, but is actually just in love. Something seems off with Dominique, too – she’s haunted by visions of a small blonde child named Mikhael that she reacts to with more horror than they seem to warrant.
I'm clearly already a fan of Case Study of Vanitas considering the fact that I'm on volume 8. I think this volume is the best one so far. The way it wrapped of the beast of Gevaudan arc was great. Astolfo challenging Noe's beliefs made for good development for him. Scenes with Roland are always a delight. Mikhail, the character that was just introduced, seems interesting and I can't wait to learn more about him and his relationship with Vanitas. Getting to know more about Domi and her inner thoughts is so interesting. This volume also has one of my favorite scenes for learning about Vanitas and Noe's relationship. Now with all the stuff I liked about this volume lets talk about what I didn't like, which was the least in this volume compared to all the others. I think every book suffers from the same issue; I really hate Jeanne and Vanitas' relationship. They don't really have anything going for them and sometimes their interactions make me uncomfortable. This volume only had mild scenes between them. They are the only bad part of this volume in my opinion. Overall a 4/5, but as you can guess by reading the rest of this review I would highly recommend this entire series and especially this volume.
Aiuto.
why did that last chapter have to end like THAT!!!!! noé??? vanitas?? DOMI?? what is HAPPENING!! (also. take a shot every time these characters *cough* noé *cough* act so. gay. and yet we’re supposed to believe they’re Not gay in any? way?? whatsoever? 😑)
