Making the Play

Jace Saxon knows the world of sports and what it means to be a team player as well as a leader, both on and off the field. As a college football player, the handsome, steely-blue eyed athlete had repeatedly demonstrated his leadership and athleticism, so that it was no surprise that his ability and his leadership were recognized by the Heisman selection committee as most outstanding player leader displaying diligence, perseverance, and hard work.

And, after college, he continued to bring his athleticism to the field as a professional player of skill, integrity and leadership, growing his reputation as he continued to seek out opportunities to share is love of football by coaching inner-city teenagers in the sport he loved.

Now at 52, after retiring from the sports field as an athlete, he has continued to bring his passion and integrity to covering the sport he loved as a member of the California based, highly regarded, entertainment and news agency, YBC, where he serves on the staff of the sports and entertainment department. And, as a man who has lived a life of integrity, he tries to bring to the coverage of the sport he loved and played the same focus, dedication, and honesty that he had shared with his teammates on the field.

So, when the seasoned athlete, volunteer inner-city coach, and experienced reporter heard rumors of integrity issues in the organization of the Pythons, a Kentucky based football team under the ownership of Calvin Thorpe, a powerful and wealthy man with many known and unknown business operations, he was intrigued. But what truly alerted Jace’s concern and suspicions was the untimely drug-related death of a young, talented player, Carter, who had displayed all the signs of becoming a skillful player with a long successful career.

Jace had known Carter for years as one of the young men whom Jace had met through the inner-city football program which he had coached after leaving the NFL. The young man Chase had known and watched grow and mature from a teen and college player to a successful pro-athlete was not one to turn to drugs to assist his performance or to utilize recreationally. And so, Jace was determined to use his reporter’s guile and access to become more familiar with the business and sports activities of the rich and powerful Calvin Thorpe.

But, as a divorced dad with the custody of his teenage daughter, Kyra, Jace needs to approach pursuing the truth of Carter and his relationship with Thorpe cautiously, especially now that Kara is putting additional stress on him about connecting with her actress mom. Kara has begun to challenge him as teenagers will, especially as she is constantly rebuffed by her actress mom—a mom who makes promises to her daughter that mom has no intention of fulfilling, leaving dad to try to explain mom’s choices.

And recently his time at work has become a challenge, but not because of work demands. Rather, the arrival of a new intern, Violet, at the YBC headquarters—a beautiful 26-year-old graduate student with hazel eyes and red hair—has become a distraction to the family and career focused professional.

Dressed in colorful pantsuits highlighting her well-shaped hips, and her radiant sunny smiles that appear easily and often on her cupid’s bow lips, has turned his workplace into a hazard for his libido. And, with her bubbly personality and eagerness to learn from her co-workers, Violet, the intern, is challenging him to remember all of the rules that HR expected him to know and follow, especially when the vivacious young intern seems to want his attention and support in gaining contacts to help her launch her career.

Olivia Jade leads her readers though the world of high-stakes maneuvers of professional sports while high-stakes emotional challenges are also in play. Violet is stuck as a staff entertainment writer at her station and she desperately wants a chance at a journalist position.   Trying to talk to her boss, Jace, never gets off the ground as he is always in a hurry to get away when she tries to talk to him. He is also quite rude to her when she does speak.   Jace is trying to bring down someone who is responsible for causing the death of a young athlete and never was held accountable.   An upcoming event may help him in his quest. Strangely enough, Violet is trying to go to the event to connect with someone else for a story too and she was hoping Jace had an extra ticket he was not using!   The day ends finally and she goes home to wait for an unwanted call from her mom.  Things go as usual and she hangs up and goes for a walk.   She walks in the park close by and sees a young girl alone on a bench which concerns her.   She sits down and they start talking.  Next thing you know a bellowing voice sounds off and sure enough it is Jace.  Kyra is his daughter.  He starts his usual mouthing off at her even as his daughter tells him he has it wrong. Nice guy.   A few days later she meets a blind date for dinner.  He is creepy and she wishes time would go faster.  As he starts to get 'handsy', she gets up to leave and he yells terrible things at her as she throws money down to cover her meal.  He grabs her just as someone comes to her aid....of course it has to be Jace.  He takes her home.   They end up in an argument in the car and he pulls over.  He keeps yelling at her with accusations.  They get into a clinch that gets heated until she accidentally starts honking the horn.  He takes her home and avoids her.  Then he notices that she has been working late, and overhears some of her calls.  He feels really bad and admits now that he was out of line with the way he spoke to her.   He stops at her cubicle and apologizes to her.  She turns it around and tells him he was right.  He then tells her he wants to make it up to her and asks her what he could give her.  She asks if he has a plus one for his visit to a place called Vera Island, as the person she is trying to get an interview with will be there....he offers it to her.  Wait until you read about this place and what goes on there.  He too is there hoping to get some dirt on the person he is trying to bring to justice in the death of a  young athlete.  Will they find what they are after?   The best is yet to be revealed.  Will their quests bring them closer.  You won't want to miss the rest.   Really a great story!

This is Jace and Violet's story. I always enjoy Olivia Jade's writing style. This is a well written and well told story.

Violet is convinced that Jace does not like her. That makes it hard when you work with someone, especially when you need to ask for a favor or help or whatever you wanna call it. He isn't just any ordinary co-worker. He's famous, a retired Heisman Trophy winner with three Super Bowl wins who now works in the same company as Violet. She's still a staff writer and is working hard to earn herself a promotion and more permanent position. Jace is probably the only one who can help her get an invitation to an event that is crucial to Violet getting close to someone she needs to report on --- the story that lands her the job she is determined to get. But he's grumpy and she's clumsy at just the wrong times and never ends up getting all the words out. Men are hard to read and that includes Jace Saxon. A series of events and being at the right place at the right...or wrong...time just may bring out the truth and allow for things to finally go Violet's way, but it certainly isn't easy. Jace may seem grumpy but even that grump may prove to be a pretty amazing protector.

I enjoyed the mystery, suspense and hot romance with some pretty steamy moments. Throw in some fun in the sun, over the top new friends, some helpful advice and yes, some ruthless, evil people and that's all what makes this a page turner!.

Vee is a charming, hardworking sunshine personality who whilst she prefers to say the nice thing is just as capable of telling it straight. Which is why she just can't understand what she's done to deserve Jace's strong dislike.

Jace is a driven individual who might not necessarily like the limelight but is quite capable of using it to his benefit. He's never had a problem of steering clear of women which is why he just can't work how why he just can't keep his thoughts away from Vee.

These two invest so much effort into staying away from each other that when things snap the attraction is explosive.

A truly absorbing story following the will they, won't they relationship between these two. Add in high powered criminals and a withdrawn pre teenager and this is an unput downable story.

Another winner from Olivia.

Violet wanted to be a field reporter. She knew she was good enough, but every time she went to ask Jace to put in a good word for her - something embarrassing happened. Ugh! Jace was working on his own journalist investigating so he had little time for Violet. That’s what made their last encounter very unusual - he invited Violet to go with him to this island getaway for the rich and powerful. It was all about the work. They would each be working on their story’s. Of course, it doesn’t go smoothly. Jace is driven. Violet is more carefree and lighthearted and feisty when needed. There is a lot going on in this book so you will not get bored. Keep reading. The story is a handful but well worth it!.

Good Reading!

Jace is a closed-off kind of guy, sticking to himself & does not like to socialize with other people. He has enough on his plate trying to have a father/daughter relationship without having Violet, one of his employees, trying to get his attention. He may be outwardly gruff having her in his space but he senses there’s more to her, a personality he likes in a woman. They sense a burning attraction between them until it peaks into an inferno. They still have growing pains on whether or not it works out & the direction they follow, both in their personal lives & the workplace. Lucky breaks & they are a winning team forever.

Violet is frustrated with her job as a staff entertainment writer. She wants the ability to be a mainstream journalist. Her boss, Jace, is rude and condescending and he tells her to just keep doing what she's doing because that's what he needs her to do. Later, Violet has a phone conversation with her mother that doesn't go well and decides to go for a walk. She runs into a young lady in the park and they sit and talk. Jace comes onto the scene and he's his normal self, even though his daughter tells him how he needs to cool it. The following week, Violet is out on a date and Jace rescues her. They get into yet another argument, but suddenly sparks are flying between the two of them. Can these two hot-blooded people find common ground?

Jace is a single dad, a former football player and now a journalist. He is a mission to find out the truth about a football team owner. Violet is a staff writer definitely trying to get a better position so that she can be a journalist. However, Jace her boss avoids her and evades her when he can. Jace is a little concerned about the feelings she evokes in him. Now Violet just thinks that he hates her. They keep doing this impossible dance where neither wins. Things change when violet sees his daughter alone in the park and decides to keep her company. Jace starts to bend a little and they get to know each other better. Soon sparks are flying in a good way. Can they both get what they want and a happily ever after?

A well devised story with great characters although at times I could have hit Mr Grumpy b^m the billionaire at his total lack of social grace, but I know it is simply a way in which ignites interest and knowing how the purest of heart female tames the grump in the end. Maybe its me reading about all these freaking billionaires that seem to exist in the literary world these days.... only joking.

But why I enjoyed it too is reading it with that strong emotional link that comes about from the characters backgrounds and emotions in a story helps to keep the momentum of a story. But then true love is never easy!.

Jace Saxon’s was a retired football college player and famous as Heis-man winning football player.
He continued his career by working in journalism,
He was a divorced ,father of 12 year old daughter.
Also a grumpy with his co workers.
Violet is a journalist at the same agency, She wanted a favor from him but every time she’s in front of him her tongue is blocked.
One day he was at a reception and the nanny’s of his daughter called to inform him that Kyra escaped.after hours going around to find her.he found her in a park talking with a lady, when he saw her he can’t believe it was her and told her what he taught on his mind .
This book is amazing ,good written as well.

Okay, so Jace is BEYOND "grumpy" throughout most of this book. He's a butt. So, while they might not be actual enemies, the tension and seeming dislike is definitely there.

It takes quite a bit for Jace to start being more friendly towards Violet, but it does happen. From there, a different type of tension comes in.

Undeniable connection, in spite of behavior. Violet is great, while Jace takes some warming up to. Great story, with lots of heat, some danger, and plenty of heart.

Jace and Violet's first meetings aren't memorable in fact she was a walking clutz. Their relationship becomes more erratic when he accuses her of using his daughter to get to him. It all changes when he saves her from a bad date. This intriguing story has lots of twists and turns that draws you into Jace and Violet's lives while cheering them on to happiness. It is a warm heartfelt story with likeable characters and I enjoyed connecting with them.

Filled with forced proximity and undeniable chemistry from the start, Jace and Violet had me hooked with their banter and avoiding the inevitable, them being together. Jace, a former football player tries to repress his feelings toward Violet (a staff write whose run ins with him weren’t so graceful) so much in the beginning, I was just waiting for him to finally give in. How sweet giving in can be.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and getting to read about these two.

Jace us hardcore grumpy and Vee is so cute and bubbly. He puts here in her place even if she is just a happy-go-lucky person. She keeps falling around him and he has no patience for her. But when they kiss.....

Grumpy Billionaire Protector was a good novel, the chemistry that Violet and Jace have is out of this world. They are both trying to avoid it, however, while away for work they are no longer able to hold back.
