Laundry Mat

Rate this book
Newman's Coin Wash, an innocent-looking place by all standards, is not what it appears to be. Haunting the place is a creature, a species remote from any known to the planet. For centuries, it lay undisturbed below until the construction of a laundromat above. Now, stirring beneath, it feeds on the customers, enhancing its power until it emerges from below with one to eat the world.

Well, it looks like I’ll be the first review. I’m honored. I’ve been reading a lot of so so books lately, but this got me out of that funk. Brian Berry is a stand-up dude. Always dependable for a good horror story. And he’s the first author I’ve ever seen give himself a plug in his own book. Brilliant! This was just a really fun, silly creature feature, focused on interplanetary beings that use washing machines to eat humans and replicate them. If that doesn’t make you want to read it, then God have mercy on your soul. Because these unholy, killer machines won’t. Tons of gore and a pretty decent body count. Dennis was a fun lead, and each character, even the victims, had a surprising level of backstory. Now I’ve given Mr Berry a lot of goldmine level ideas for future books. Since this ended on a bit of an open note, I’d like to recommend a sequel focused on Mr Toilet Man from the movie Look Who’s Talking. Scared the living hell out of me when I was little, but the story would write itself. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, perhaps we explore the home planet of Killer Klowns as they try to domesticate Critters. Again, story could be a game-changer. He publishes like two books a month at this point, so there’s no excuses. Let’s have it! Bravo, Brian…brav-frickin-o!

Laundry Mat is exactly the type of book you expect from the title and that amazing cover art.

Its 80s style, horror pulp fiction at it's most fun and cheesy. It reads like most of Brian's books do like a campy 80s horror movie that doesnt take itself to seriously. It has killer laundry machines for goodness sake what more could you ask for?

It did take a little for the book to get going but once it did wow. It has a frantic ending full of gruesome deaths, monster action and descriptive bloodly body horror elements. Another fantastic and entertaining book. I know Brian is now known for his novelizations of low budget horror movies but some Director needs to hit him up to make movies of his books as this is one I would definitely want to see adapted for the screen.

A Horror Bookworm Recommendation
Laundry Mat by Brian G. Berry
https://horrorbookwormreviews.com/

As a heavy fog settles on Cutter’s Bay, Dennis Foster is beginning his night security shift. One of his monitoring checks is the Arrow Plaza which hosts businesses such as Rosemary’s Linens, Arrow Video and the brand new laundromat named Newman’s Coin Wash. However, as strange happenings turn into gruesome discoveries, Dennis realizes this is going to be a night like no other.

Laundry Mat by Brian G. Berry is a direct to video B-Horror movie experience. It generates horror via industrial-sized washing machines and dryers. This “monster in the machine” consumes human meat contributing to the perfect creature feature. Pleas for help, screams of agony and a heavy dose of metal teeth gnashing…Berry tells his carnivorous tale of trauma all in blood-curdling neon color.

What I love about Brian G. Berry books…wait…what does the G. stand for in his name? It has to be Gore, right? Anyway, Brian Berry writes the best “mindless low-budget fun” hands down. What he doesn’t know is that he instills a well-organized production crew that lives in my head, therefore it’s an even better quality product.

Laundry Mat is Berry’s birth of a creative nightmare utilizing slime savagery and ominous ooze. Wait a tick! I know copyright infringements and blah blah blah, but dammit I want Mr. Berry to write a novelization of Microwave Massacre. As Veruca Salt would say, “I Want It Now!”

Please don’t make yourself part of the missing person’s report and when entering a pitch black laundromat around midnight, always whisper into the darkness, “hello, is anybody there?” 24/7 Brian Berry gives us great horror and for that we fans thank you. A five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Horror Bookworm Recommendation.

Are you ready for an outrageously good horror-B movie experience in book form? Then buckle up for this ridiculous novella featuring slithering creatures and murderous laundry machines that gnash their teeth and drip in acidic slime!

Just by looking at its campy cover, I knew I was in for a wild and entertaining experience, and it certainly delivered! This creature feature was so over-the-top and unlike any I’ve read before. There’s an interesting backstory for the creatures and enough body horror to make my skin crawl – in the best way possible. The parking lot scenes, shrouded in fog and inhabited by slithering creatures, reminded me of Stephen King's 'The Mist' - which felt somewhat disjointed from the novella's opening as I preferred the intense monster scenes that unfolded inside the laundromat. But nonetheless, the entertainment value remained high!

Overall, I had a good time reading this! The sheer unpredictability had me hooked and guessing until the very end. Theres no doubt I'll be seeking out more books from this author when I'm in the mood to shut my brain off for a thrilling escape.

If disgusting servings of cheesy fun, lovable heroes, and over-the-top gore (think melting bodies and acidic slobber) sounds like your brand of twisted fun, go grab this novella.

Spooktober 2023 Book 7

4.5 stars

If you’re like me and already thought that laundry mats were kind of weird and creepy to begin with, then Brian G. Berry’s latest story won’t do you any favors in convincing you otherwise.

Feeling like a peak era Zebra horror novel and harkening back to badly produced and even worse executed 80’s VHS tapes, Laundry Mat is a schlocky, scummy, cheesy gorefest of a tale that’s well written, fun, and overall one of Berry’s best works since Snow Shark II.

Berry continues to pump out some of the most consistently pulp-ish novellas and shorts and does so with such regular frequency, sometimes I wonder if he sold his soul to the dark prince in exchange for the talent and wildly inventive imagination his books convey.

I'm a sucker for 80s horror. Also, the cover for Laundry Mat caught my attention. So I needed to read it. Am I glad I did because what is scarier than a laundry machine eating humans? I don't know, haha.

It has that B-Movie feel to it that I like for 80s horror. I could see something like this on cable television. I really enjoyed the homage to 80s to early 90s culture with the VHS and NES Carts I grew up with.

This is the kind of read that will make me double-check my washing machine for sure. Overall, this is just a fun, cheesy, and awesome read. The story matched the cover rather well.

I'll be checking out Brian's other books!

Quick little 80’s horror vibes novella, it’s either a hit or miss. Loved the cover!

This was a weird little novella centering around a shopping plaza, fog, centuries old alien vegetation and a laundry mat. You meet Dennis Foster who is working the graveyard shift at the local shopping plaza when a mysterious fog rolls into town. He stops into the 24/7 laundry to meet Mr. Newman the creepy older owner and to ask about a guest who never left. Mr. Newman has been keeping secrets, feeding an ancient alien plant. When the local police show up about the missing person he is the prime suspect but no one figures it out until it’s too late and the plaza is over run!
Whilst I didn’t DNF this I genuinely don’t see myself reading it again. I found the plot to be lacking and the ending to be predictable and expected. For me a good horror story needs to invoke an emotion be it fear, anxiety etc and this was lacking.

Was expecting more of a Mangler vibe that Stephen King did. Brian did Brian. A fog coming in, thick sea of white soup, and it was cold, really cold. A new laundromat, 24 hours a day baby. Blue and red neon light. Very enticing. A customer using the dryer before a tentacle flies out and grabs his leg. Now dragged into the machine. Shrieking, the man now a bloody mess, consumed by the monster. A mention of Brian Berry's Death Commando. Nice plug just released on video. Love the video shop vibe. These monsters are hungry. Teeth the size of a bowling pin. Razor sharp ripping off limbs. A baby exploded like a tumid bladder of blood. Yuck. Fog engulfs, monsters feeding frenzy. Need to burn these bitches.

Brian Berry is a master of 80’s themed horror, and Laundry Mat doesn’t let the reader down.

This gore-filled and action packed story features a laundry mat, Newman’s Coin Wash, that is much more than you’d expect from such a place.

A creature, ancient and very hungry, lurks below and Jerry Newman is more than happy to serve the beast, feeding it his customers.

The dense fog that accompanies the creature adds to a feeling of claustrophobia as I read, and I loved the nostalgia evoked as well.

This was a really fun read with a great ending.

Weird

A good weird read kept me interested though the very end had me slightly confused about the main character having been infected by the vines. This is hinted the vines infection had spread an thus the town is doomed. If you put logic aside you'll want to keep reading I recommend this book.

It was not my favorite book by him, but it was definitely interesting. You don't see Killer Demon , laundry machines every day.

I was a little confused on the ending, however. We can only really assume that the vine that scratched Dennis got a weird infection and passed it on to his mother. Presumably, the town is screwed.

Cheesy 80s pulp horror with a touch Lovecraftian. This mom and pop laundry mat reminded me of the classic 80s movie with Rick Moranis and his pet Seymore plant. On the plus side this story ended with a cliffhanger so I hoping for a part 2.
