YouTube ghost hunting stars, Zach and Lucas, disappeared at an undisclosed location several months ago. Iris – who heads up her own unsuccessful channel with co-hosts Byron and his girlfriend Molly – is obsessed with the duo, and has been searching for the location ever since. Then, she stumbles across long-abandoned Thornhanger House. The trio set aside their toxic love triangle when they find Zach and Lucas’s abandoned equipment inside … complete with their last day of filming. As they watch the footage, a horrifying truth whatever came for Zach and Lucas is coming for them too …
Lisa Richardson has a first-class honours degree in Creative and Professional Writing and works as a production editor. When not writing, Lisa can be found reading, binge-watching Netflix with her sons, or running and taking photographs along the Kent coast.
Iris has a youtube channel in which she goes to investigate haunted places. Together with her friends they are trying to gain more subscribers
It is when her favorite paranormal investigator youtubers disappear, that iris sees a chance to both grow her channel and find the missing boys at the same time.
So they start looking for Zach and Lucas in haunted houses that they might have visited on the day of their disappearance.
It was a good paranormal investigation story with some creepy moments and a lot to discover inside the haunted house. However the scares did become a bit repetitive for me.
Nevertheless I did enjoy the horror aspect of the book. What did bother me a bit was the romantic relationships, how the characters handled that and how it was presented. I did not enjoy that at all and I personally think if you removed all the romantic interests, it would not really change the main story so why put so much of it in a paranormal story in the first place. But this is just my personal opinion.
This book was a wild and thrilling ride. So much so that I needed a break half way through, even though I desperately wanted to keep reading to find out what happened.
This leans heavily into lots of horror tropes and does it so well. Creepy dolls - check. Rocking chair - check. It’s The Blair Witch Project meets The Ring meets The Haunting of Hill House all wrapped up in one.
As a YA Horror there is nothing too gruesome featured but the suspense barely lets up. My poor racing heart.
We have 3 sets of characters. The original missing ghost hunting duo of Zach and Lucas who we meet through their found footage. Iris, Molly and Byron who we follow on their hunt for the duo, and finally the house, it’s grounds and its inhabitants. It’s up to you to determine whether those inhabitants are former or current!
Despite making some very questionable choices I did like all the characters and didn’t want to see any of them harmed. And as if all the ghost hunting wasn’t angsty enough we also have a love quadrangle but which pairing survives the night? (It’s described as a love triangle in the synopsis but in a haunted house tale who is to say the missing supposed deceased Zach is out of the picture!). Finally whichof our trio lives to reap the fame that having a viral ghost hunting video brings you. And is that worth the horror to get there?
For the reader I say yes it is well worth picking this one up. Not everything is 100% explained at the end but that leads to the unease, a call for a re-read, and maybe even opens up the chance for a sequel?
For the characters - hmmmmmm. I think I’ll leave the seances and EMF machines to them.
I’m off to read a rom com stat.
Mini-Review in page numbers:
Page 339 – Final page. I’d like to say this was when I sighed in relief – but I’d be lying!
Page 219 When our intrepid trio actually decide to leave the house!!!
Page 170 Where I literally noped out of reading because my adrenaline was spiking and it was dark.
Page 57 When any sensible person – who would be willing to visit a haunted building in the first place – would have left.
Page 8 Where I would have noped out of this adventure. That is – I would never have entertained the thought of going.
Thanks to Chicken House who reached out and provided a gifted copy. The level of fear expressed in this review is all mine!
I was just innocently browsing the horror shelves at Waterstones and came across this, and it’s so rare that I see a YA horror that hasn’t been hyped everywhere that I just bought it without thinking.
Part of my problem is that reading about influencers/vloggers when there’s no big twist revealing that yes, despite their vapidity on the surface they actually DO have feelings and morals, sucks. Iris was just obsessed with YouTube for the whole book and had no critical thinking skills whatsoever, to the point she was willing to risk her bestie’s life.
Don’t even get me started on the relationships, which were baffling at best. Byron was just a dick to both gals - ditching Molly to basically die at the end and then cheating on her with Iris? And ready to jump down Iris’ throat for the smallest thing/baseless accusation?
Absolutely nothing was explained. We have no idea who was living in the chapel. Did Molly trash the car or just find the battery? Was any of the ghost stuff real? Is Iris dead?
God I don’t even want to know anymore. I’m so glad I get to read something else now.
An utterly thrilling, totally creepy YA horror which has had me so anxious everytime I've dared to start a new chapter...! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait to see it on shelf!
I really enjoyed the horror aspect of this book, the haunted like house, and how the house itself felt alive through the spirits etc.
But the ending ruined it for me, I'm not sure if it's being set up for a sequel or not, but it's left me more confused than I'd like to be. There's a lot of uncertainty and unanswered questions, things that don't add up or make sense.
Thank you Chicken House so sending me a review copy.
So this was interesting, it’s definitely a well-timed Halloween read. I got through the book over the course of about 3 nights. The chapters always end in a way that you want to continue, so I can imagine a lot of readers will get through this quickly.
Channel Fear does some things well, the setting, the atmosphere, and the stories behind of some of the hauntings at Thornhanger House. It’s a book that knows where it sits, it fits very nicely into Scream-type / Fear Street horror storytelling. Jump scares galore with characters who despite talking about horror-rules don’t follow them.
The book is set in the UK and Byron drives the three friends to Thornhanger House, even if he started at 17 that would at most mean they are 16/17 – 18-year-olds at this stage. They don’t act it, without the driving reference I would have put the characters at 13 (14 max) based on their behaviour.
I don’t know if the ending is meant to be a set up for a sequel to resolve all the open questions or the point of the story is that mysteries are mysteries and therefor there is no explanation. If it’s the later that doesn’t explain the behaviour of though, I know we had “hints” at parts of the story but I don’t think it worked in setting up what happened.
Prepare yourself for not having many answers for all the questions that get raised.
Iris has been enthralled by Zach and Lucas’s YouTube channel about ghost hunting for ages. But when they disappeared at an undisclosed site months ago, the trail went cold. But Iris, who also has her own channel—although, not nearly as successful—has been looking for them ever since with her channel partners, Byron and Molly, who are dating. Although, things are awkward between the trio as there’s some mixed romantic feelings that test their stability to remain friends.
After homing in on a location called Thornhanger House, Iris, Byron and Molly set out to find Zach and Lucas. Only, what they find is their abandoned equipment that shows their last day of filming before they vanished. What starts as a harmless mission to uncover the truth turns dark, with an unsettling reality of what really happened to Zach and Lucas, and what might never have left, coming for the trio, too. But what lurks in Thornhanger House? And once they’ve stepped foot inside, will they ever make it out unscathed?
Overall, Channel Fear was twisty, compelling and full of cliffhanger horrors to make your heart race. I loved the way unreliable narrators and narratives turned the mystery unpredictable, and how it was reminiscent of a modern day Blair Witch. Although it took me a few chapters to get settled into the story, by the end I was thoroughly engrossed in how it would end, and what really happened. Lisa has this epic way of leaving the reader wanting more by the end of chapters, and it definitely kept me reading well into the night. This was such an amazing story, perfect for getting in the Halloween mood. I highly recommend!
Ok wow. So when I read the description for this book I knew it was going to be right up my street. I LOVE paranormal investigations. I grew up watching ghost hunters and ghosts caught on camera videos and I love so many YouTube channels that explore the paranormal so this instantly appealed to me, but I did not expect it to go as far as it did and I mean that in the best possible way.
This is YA but the horror is anything but and the author wasn’t afraid to make it scary. I am obsessed. This book needs to be on everyone’s Halloween TBR. Haunted house, that is actually haunted. Mystery elements and a trio who are all well fleshed out and carry weight. They are young and make bad decisions and are driven by bad morals because they are young and that felt so real. I dislike when teens make decisions like an adult because they don’t have the critical thinking of an adult and Iris’s unhealthy obsession with likes and views to the point of causing her friends real harm felt real. I am so impressed by this book. I feel like it was written specifically for me and no one else. Love love love love love. Such a perfectly spooky fun time. Wow.
Just fyi this is a horror that leaves you guessing. If you need everything wrapped up in a tight little bow at the end you might hate this. This is a leaves you wondering and guessing/ draw your own conclusions book and I really enjoyed that. It’s almost like the question of what do choose to believe?
I don't have much to say about the story as I didn't get very far. But reading the friend/love triangle - which feels like it will be a steady thread throughout the book - just felt awkward and uncomfortable.
I also can't shake the fact that the missing Youtubers are clearly inspired by Sam and Colby.
TW: abuse, neglect, abuse of a child, murder, death, suicide, violence, blood, gore, toxic relationship, cheating
Channel Fear delivered everything it promised and more. This was a chilling, exceptional read.
I have always been someone that adores the found footage genre of films, particularly within horror. Richardson capitalises on many of the tropes found in the originators of the genre (I’m looking at you, The Blair Witch Project), but twists and subverts them into a frightening little beast all of its own. You can tell the respect being paid to the genre and it feels like its own sort of love letter, mired in blood and guts. It also was really reminiscent of The Haunting of Hill House, another of my favourites. Those ghostly figures standing oddly in shots that you just about manage to spot are chilling and I got that same paranoid, constantly watchful sense while reading. The use of vlogging style transcripts that intercut the narrative is superb. It feels genuine and heightens the tension & scares to a new level. Richardson has such a good grasp on creating a YA horror atmosphere that just totally envelopes you. This is definitely a voice to watch within this genre.
This is a book rooted in shadows, mists and unexplainable phenomenon. It thrives in the unnerving nature of ambiguity. We have unreliable narrators and events that are not always as they seem. At its core, there is this twisted sort of love square. It is complicated and messy and felt very true to real life teenage relationships. There is particularly a thread strung throughout about parasocial relationships in the age of social media and the desire to capitalise on the fame of others. For me, this book’s brilliance was cemented by that ending. Without giving anything away, it hits the perfect note to epitomise the atmosphere generated by this genre.
Channel Fear makes you double back and re-examine everything. It keeps you on your toes, never fully able to trust anything or anyone within its sharp and pacy pages.
I enjoyed this multigenre book, its part supernatural, part horor, part romance. The first half of this book was fantastic. Gripping, scary and atmospheric throughout too, something is so important in ghost stories. Sadly the plot ran out of steam around halfway through when thereafter there was a lot of splitting up and running down darkened corridors making it hard to imagine the layout of old house. The romance part just didn't work for me, it should have been removed completely as it wasn't believable and the reader is tempted to skip over these bits to get to the strongest parts of the book, the actual scary parts. If i hadn't enjoyed this book i would have DNF'ed it so I think this author has deffo got something and has got another stronger, scarier book in her. That book needs to focus a bit more on plot and tying up loose ends as the endingof Channel Fear was also unsatisfactory, although that maybe to allow some room for a sequel. All these complaints are just my opinion and overall i think its a decent debut. I'm sure if she irons out these issues, her next book will well worth reading.
I enjoyed this book. Ghost hunting and relationship drama are an interesting combo, and although it didn't always hit, it never turned me away from the book Byron kinda frustrated me. Because I knew that this book was fiction, I was annoyed that he was so adamant that ghosts weren't real, even though that is reasonable in real life. Also, I hated whenever he didn't believe Iris. Apart from that I enjoyed the book. Iris' motivations were fascinating and so interesting to read. I like the ending (although I do wish we had answers to some questions). Also, Iris and Molly had way more chemistry than Iris and Byron.

I loved Channel Fear, definitely a five star rating from me for this thrill ride of a book. It combines the classic haunted house trope with modern day elements of social media and found footage, and really kept me on the edge of my seat. So much so it made me a little tense at every creak in the house at night whilst I was reading. It's perfect for fans of The Haunting of Hill House, and a perfect spooky read for Halloween or fans of Horror.
This book is as brilliant. The three main characters are trying find out what happened to 2 YouTubers who went missing and track them down to Thornhanger house where they find the boys equipment and things just start going downhill. This book made me nervous to read the next chapter. This book builds tension and doesn’t let go until the end. Great book but the ending needed abit more explaining and left a lot of unanswered questions (possible sequel?)Great read 5 stars 🌟
3.5 I loved the vibes and atmosphere of this book! It gave me everything I wanted in a quick haunted house read. The main character isn't especially likeable. She's pretty selfish and is overly obsessed with her YouTube channel, but it didn't bother me. It worked for the story.
The reason this book is 3.5 is the ending... It doesn't break the story or mess up the vibe. It was just a bit too vague for my liking.
Content warnings: disappearances, horror, body horror. I think??? It's been two months since I read this and I forgot to take notes...
This was extremely silly but somehow it WORKED? Like, it did feel a little bit 2016 in terms of the whole ghost hunting YouTube channel situation. But it was fast paced and genuinely creepy a lot of the time, so even though the choices the characters made drove me up the literal wall, I was hooked from start to finish, and the ending really got me.
Initially, I nearly gave this book up after a few chapters. The triangle is cringey and weird. The main characters is not likeable at all, but the more I read the more I enjoyed the thriller aspect of it. I couldn’t put it down, just wanting to know what happens next
Overall I would recommend, it reminds me of a woman in black sort of read and you can just ignore the triangle, it’s not important to the book at all
This was a genuinely spooky read which made me unsettled the entire time I was reading. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the ending or characters (Iris and Byron had pretty much no redeemable qualities, and Molly was kinda cute but over the top), it did make me want to keep reading so I could find out what was happening.
I will never read a horror book again. I wanted to explore genres this year as I only really read thrillers but I don’t think horror books are for me😂. It was a really good book that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next, a real page turned but I’m too much of a wimp I think. Terrified me!
This book was so good. A supernatural horror story about 3 youtubers, wanting to get more subscribers, by searching for another 2 youtubers that went missing. This story was well written and gave me all the spooky and creepy vibes. There were times when I wouldn't read this book as it was nighttime, and I was home alone 😂 Really good story, and I loved the characters.
Lisa Richardson's catchy use of language got me engaged from the start of the book. Something I liked about the book was that it utilised imagery to set the scene. What could have made this book better was using more suspense and tension throughout the story. Something that I didn't particularly enjoy in this book was that it had a very slow start to the story, and took a while to actually lead up to any problems or challenges. However, I would read another book from this author.
As someone who is a Sam and Colby fan, I enjoyed the book so much I read it in 2 days and couldn't sleep without a nightlight for the week. :D I have no complaints, something you would see on youtube with ghosthunters too! Gave me heavy vibes of Sam and Colby until I actually read the acknowledgements page and saw them, amongst other paranormal investigator youtubers, made me scream from joy.
This was so creepy and exciting . Perfect reading for the Spooky Season. Great characters and loved the ghost hunting youtube vibes as i am a youtuber myself who makes spooky videos too ! :) Great book xx 5 stars !! :)
It's a great combination of two of my favourite horrors of all time: Mike Flanagan's Hill House meets a modern-day Blair Witch Project.
I didn't always love the characters and found Iris especially annoying, but the setting and the plot were suitably creepy and I loved the ambiguity of the ending.
I'm a big horror fan, and this book had so many of the tropes I love as well as plenty of twists and fresh takes on classic horror elements. The characters and setting of creepy Thornhanger House were so realistic, I could easily see this being adapted for the screen - I loved it!
Super atmospheric and creepy. All of the things that go bump in the night!
Lots of questions left unanswered, so kinda hoping for a sequel to tie up loose ends. I loved By and Iris, and am super sad with their ending. But also… kinda poetic.
Great creepy read!

Is the real horror this seemingly haunted house, or is it this very awkward love triangle? The answer is both. This is one of those reminders that YA horror can capture the creepy, eeriness without pulling punches. It definitely got the scary atmosphere of a large empty house and the unknown.
Don't read this book! The only reason I carried on reading was bc I wanted to know what happened to Zack and Lucas but ITS NEVER REVEALED. 80% of the book is just describing the house and "ghost experiences" that happen to the trio.
