And civil war has stolen safety away from Kat’s sister. Can they unite forces in time to stop their world being torn apart?
I was offered the copy for an honest review (thx Claudia)!
Okay, let's begin with the sentence structures, layout etc. Personally, I would´ve looked over the structure of some sentences as they were either difficult to read or didn´t make sense to me. The layout was good tho. The book was fast passed which I did enjoy as it makes the book a quick read in between larger fantasies I read. I personally use books like "The Heir" to prevent reading slumps and this book saved me from one. Anyways I feel like there are some plot holes here and there. I didn´t understand why Eric was unaware of the engagement of his brother and Kat. Kat and Thomas were complex characters which I enjoyed but their love story had no build-up whatsoever, this kind of upset me as I´d enjoy a slow burn in this book. The end seemed rushed to me, they married out of nowhere.
Would I read the book again? Yes, it´s hard to write a book everyone enjoys to a tee and even though i have my critiques I enjoyed the book nonetheless. I´ll definitly will recomend the book to anyone interested in a quick read with a strong female character.

⚜️ Book Title - The Heir ⚜️ Author - Claudia Klein ⚜️ Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⚜️ Some Genre/Themes/Tropes: YA Fiction, Fantasy, Adventure
I received an ebook copy of this book via the author, as well I purchase my own on Amazon. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is my honest review.
The storyline for The Heir was really intriguing and well paced. I do have a lot of unanswered questions but that’s what keeps me engaged and could most likely be answered in future books. I’ve already purchased book 2.
I did give this book 3 and not a 4 stars because I did get a bit confused swapping between character perspectives without notice frequently. Also, it has more than 2 points of view as well. This is not a bad thing but if the first point isn’t done right I get really lost, really quick and have to stop, think and then delve back into the story. I want to get lost in the world created within the pages of a book, not jump in and out. This could be easily fixed with some editing… or it could just be a me problem 😅.
Overall this is a good first book. Well done Claudia. I would recommend this book to others who would enjoy this genre.
I want to say thank you to the author and I’ve already purchased book 2 to find out what happens next.
This teen fantasy by local author, Claudia Klein (Nineveh, Ind.) is fast paced and full of intrigue. When the country of Arbinad falls, princesses Kat and Lucy are separated and their father, the king, is killed. Lucy flees to an allied island country and Kat is taken prisoner when Erlingue soldiers mistake her for a soldier. Over the course of one day the sisters' lives are upended forever.
The princes of Erlingue couldn't be more different. Eric wants to become king and conquer the continent, while Thomas just wants to keep the peace and let his father rule. When Eric murders his father and ascends the throne he wants to enslave more people and wage war; he will stop anyone who gets in his way, even if it's his own brother. Prince Thomas soon finds himself in a dungeon cell with none other than Princess Kat. She has every reason to hate him as his family and countrymen razed her country and killed her people, but they form an uneasy alliance. Can they escape? Can she get her country back? Most importantly, can she trust a prince who just waged war on her homeland? The Heir is told through multiple perspectives and is the first in a trilogy.
I bought this book when I met the author at a barnes and noble a few months ago. I was excited to finally read it and had high hopes as I love supporting indie authors. This book was picked as our first book in our new book club at my work.
Unfortunately, I did not like it and really struggled to read it. So far, everyone in my book club is struggling to start it. The writing wasn't bad, but the whole plot and story line was the most confusing thing I have ever read.
I was very concerned about Prince Marcus just blatantly sharing his country/kingdom's secrets to a 15 year old he just met. Then he confesses his love for this 15 year old when he is 18! That is very concerning. I understand back in this type of time that is not uncommon but still concerning. Let alone Katherine and Prince Thomas. I have no clue their ages, but their entire interactions are the most confusing thing ever. Prince Thomas' country just enslaved Katherine's and basically killed everyone. Katherine goes from "I hate you" to loving him within seconds. I get he was "good" but still it was weird. Also I know this is an entire war the whole time, but goddamn give them a second for build-up. When I heard fast-paced, I figured it would be an easy read between other books. Instead, this felt like the Indy500 with how fast it was! Fast paced does not mean there can't be build-up! I also could not figure out the time period this was placed in as it reads like a few different time periods.
Andrew the manservant was by far the best character and the only rational one.
I genuinely do not want this to be mean. This is just my honest review. I can read 500 pages in one day, no problem, but this book took me a week, and I almost stopped reading it multiple times. Maybe it gets better in the next books, but unfortunately, I can not justify continuing this series.
I think this book would be better targeted towards pre-teens.

Very simple writing, in desperate need of an editor. I keep getting distracted with bad technique like this paragraph for example:
People had flocked out to watch the hanging today. It wasn’t every day that a prince of the land was hung for a crime. “Come on, Mama,” a village boy called, tugging his mother’s arm. “It’s not every day we get to see royalty hang. This should be interestin’.” pg 178
or this:
And where in the world was Kat? Her sister was heir to the Arbinadian throne. If anyone needed to be fleeing with her, it was Kat…. Why had her father, brother, and sister decided to stay behind? Shouldn’t Kat at least have come with her? She was the heir to the throne, after all. It was important that the heir escape and live. Or perhaps that was the reason she had stayed behind. As the heir to the throne, she needed to learn from their father what to do in a situation like this, when their land was under an enemy invasion. pg. 14-16
This happened multiple times in the book where the author set it up and then repeated it two or three times. Or things like this:
“Mama, when was the last time royalty was hung?” the boy asked. “I’ve never seen it done. Neither has your grandpapa, neither,” pg 180
Why would you have to write neither 2x in one sentence?? It’s complete madness. Outside of the obvious grammar issues and very bad structure. The plot is underwhelming, I had no love for any of the characters. There is multiple pov’s, sometimes switching on the same page it’s confusing who to follow. The main character I believe is Kat and she’s portrayed as this badass archer. Which is short-lived because they are up against rifles and gets taken as a slave, doesn’t do much in captivity, she gets chance after chance to be saved from situations she placed herself in and is so boring.
I almost dnf but I couldn’t give this author the satisfaction. Would not recommend to anyone.

I've barely started this book and I already know I'm going to rate it low. We've been introduced to a few characters so far but I have no clue who any of them are. Not in a "what is this person's name or role" kind of way, but what kind of personality do they have? Kat is the heir but wants to fight in her father's military. Lucy is the youngest sister who has been sent away from the city to protect her. That's all we know at this point (yes, it's early in the story so we will [hopefully] learn more, but I don't trust this author's ability to do that).
There is a WHOLE BUNCH of telling so far. Kat has cut her hair and dressed in her brother's clothes to blend into the military. The army of Erlingue has attacked and there's a battle scene, but it so flat and boring. Battle scenes shouldn't be boring, especially if it's someone's first time in one! How does Kat feel seeing her compatriots killed around her? Does she regret her choice and actions? Does she feel in over her head? How did she manage to fool everyone? What does the battle smell like? She describes the attacking army's weapons as "she didn't know what 'rifle' meant along the weapon's side" but then goes on to use words like 'bullet' and 'gun'. If Kat doesn't know what a rifle is, how can she know what else they would be called or what the ammo is? The whole battle took place in about two paragraphs.
There's also a lot of repetition, even within the same paragraph. Repetition of Kat being the heir to Arbinad, repetition of Lucy not knowing what was going on. All those words could have been purged and used elsewhere (like during the first battle, maybe?). The book is a headhopper, going from one POV to another in the next paragraph, which is confusing sometimes as a reader. For example, at the beginning an Arbinad scout sees the Erlingue army coming through the trees and escapes to warn the city. (First off, it's a very bad early warning system if your scouts are so far away from the city there's no time to get back to warn them. Beacons of Gondor, anyone?). He's being pursued and the POV switches from him to the knights chasing him.
I will continue this story because the premise does sound interesting, but I won't be surprised if I end up DNF'ing this if these issues continue.
**Two days later** I give up. 9% into this book and I just can't continue. I came to the line "It brought a smoky smell into the room because the fireplace hadn't been used in several years" and rolled my eyes SO HARD. SO many other ways of writing that sentence so it doesn't read so clunky.
Before starting my review, I would like to thank the author, Claudia Klein, for generously offering me a digital copy of her book "The Heir". I would also like to reassure everyone who might be reading my review, that it's exclusively based on my honest opinion! Shall we begin?
The Heir is a book full of action and suspense. Set in a medieval background, it constitutes a story of self-discovery and resilience, with a touch of romance and dark magical forces plotting behind the scenes. It's one of those stories all fantasy readers love to read!
Two neighbouring kingdoms end up in war after one invades the other. Two princesses follow separate ways after they are forced to flee to safety, two brothers taking opposite sides, while a great evil is lurking in the shadows, slowly setting its great plans to motion.
Something I really enjoyed about this book are the two main female characters. They are both strong and brave in their own unique ways and we see them grow beautifully as the story progresses. There are a lot of obstacles that appear in everyone's path, but in the end, somehow, everyone manages to overcome them. Another trait I enjoed is how the author uses different perspectives to narrate her story, which enables us readers to delve into the different characters' points of view, maybe not too deep but deep enough in order to understand what everyone has in mind. Many times I got those vibes of historical - epic adventure movies we all have watched, which feature medieval kingdoms at war, with those epic battles and princes and princesses doing everything to save them, even though I don't think I can name a specific one at the moment.
The plot is quick paced, and keeps you constantly intrigued, preventing you from losing interest even for a minute and making you want to read one more chapter and then another and so on.Taking into account that this title is the first of a book series, I believe that any questions left unanswered will be dealt with in the sequel.
All in all, this book is a really nice choice, especially for everyone who enjoys fantasy themes. I would strongly recommend it without thinking twice!!!
The Heir brought me back to the medieval time period that I strangely didn't realize I missed while I was reading. The time of Kings & Queens, knights and betrothal agreements made to keep the peace.
Thomas was his father's favorite; he was nothing like his older brother Eric. Thomas had a heart and tried to do good every chance he got. But Eric on the other hand was cruel and conniving. So, when the King fell, and Eric ascended to the throne all hell broke loose and his evil grew. Eric somehow convinced his dad to take over Arbinad and from there Eric continued taking over other Kingdoms. But what he didn't realize was that there were survivors from the royal family that will be out for blood sooner or later.
Kat and Lucy were the only members left from their family. Kat instructed for Lucy to escape before the war came to them so she could be safe. But little did Kat know, Lucy will always be running away from danger, just when she thinks she's safe. And for Kat, she gave me Mulan vibes when she cut her hair to join her father's army. He wouldn't let her help even knowing she is an excellent archer. So, she did what she though was best, even if it put her in more danger than she was expecting.
When Kat and Thomas's worlds collide they make an awkward but unbeatable team. They are betrothed together from an arrangement years ago, but she doesn't trust Thomas after what his family did to hers. But the more time they spend together the more she starts to care. I love how the characters develop in this novel. They all came from different backgrounds, but with the war they had to learn how to improve and live a different life.
This book is definitely more YA for any young readers. And the ending definitely makes it seems like something is building up to something big. I was left with so many unanswered questions that I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next!
Before diving into the review I would like to thank the author Claudia Klein, for generously offering me a digital copy of the book “THE HEIR”. All thoughts & opinions are my very own, and this is an unbiased review.
“The Heir” is book one of this series.
“Sisters separated by war. Brothers separated by hate”.
An alliance destroyed. A kingdom defeated. The princesses of Arbinad, Kat and her sister Lucy find themselves in the brink of war with the neighboring country of Erlingue, after wedding negotiations are made between these countries. This forces princess Lucy to flee the country, to an old alliance to preserve the royal bloodline and princess Kat to defy her father’s order in order to take part in fight. Midst of the war, in a battle they cannot win, when captured by the captors, Kat is forced to conceal her true identity.
Prince Thomas of Erlingue never wanted a war, but he finds himself seated next to his father, while the people of Arbinad are slaughtered. When his father dies and his brother ascends the throne, all hell breaks loose.
The heir, was an amazing read. A book where there is struggle for power. And to be honest “power play” is something to look forward to because the characters and plot gets thickened and conflicted, and leads to complications.
The alliance that gets formed between Kat, Lucy and Thomas is trivial. I loved the dynamic between Thomas and Kat. This book stands apart from all the books that I have read due to the fact that it has multiple points of views. I found the MPV exhilarating since this is the first time I’ve indulged myself to it, to know what is happening in each of their perspective and to be able to observe the scenario.
Unlikely alliances are made, just to be tested.
Yet, there is hope.
The cliffhanger is what makes the book a little more enticing.
I’m so elated to have made the choice to read this book, and can’t wait to dive into the next book as it is in my TBR.
Team Kat, through and through.
Fingers crossed for the princess to reclaim her realm.
I really enjoyed this book! The Heir has many familiar fantasy elements - 2 medieval kingdoms at war, young princesses being forced to flee and a dark magical force at work. This story is filled with action, adventure, self-discovery and a sweet slow-burn romance. I love that there are two strong female characters. The different POVs (there are 5 I can recall) added depth and kept me intrigued. This was an easy read with good pacing.
The one thing that was a bit confusing was the frequent shift in POVs. This is written as third person omniscient, meaning that the author knows everything that is going on and they have the ability to tell the story from any of their characters POVs. There were some instances where the author jumps from one character’s POV to another character’s POV abruptly. For instance, in one paragraph, we are hearing the inner thoughts of Thomas and then in the next paragraph, it shifts to Kat’s inner thoughts.
The Heir a perfect introduction to the fantasy genre for advanced middle grade readers and young adults. This is also a great book to read with your kid(s). It’s interesting no matter your age and there’s a lot you can discuss together as you go along. Also, this became like a nostalgic comfort read for me and brought me back to when I picked up my first medieval fantasy novel at age 12.
I love that this is a series! There’s so much potential here and endless possibilities for this story, as well as its author!
I’m excited to see that Book 2 is available and I just downloaded it to my Kindle!
Thank you, Claudia, for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I want to thank Claudia Klein for giving me the opportunity to review her novel The Heir.
This was a quickly paced, suspenseful drama following Kat, Lucy, Prince Thomas, and Prince Marcus on their journeys to safety and conquering of countries. Princess Katherine (Kat) is on a path to take back her country, while Princess Lucy is just trying to stay safely out of the way. Prince Thomas is trying to keep Kat alive while trying to overthrow his evil brother, Prince Marcus, who has conquered Arbinad and killed all of its citizens...except for Kat and Lucy, that is. Every scene and every chapter moves the story along, with no boring parts that you have to slog through to get to the good stuff...it's all the good stuff. There are a lot of obstacles interfering in everyone's journeys, but somehow they make it through.
All of the characters are well-developed, and you like the people you're supposed to, while hating the one who is evil. They all have a voice, and their own opinions on how things should be handled, and Kat definitely isn't shy about giving Thomas a piece of her mind when she needs to. Lucy is a little less straight-forward, but still goes against type with the servants and other royals around her.
All in all, a great novel of family, drama, turmoil, and love that will leave you wanting more...book two anyone?? Kat is a strong female protagonist, not afraid to go against orders. Lucy is strong in a different way, and Thomas is trying to do the right thing for everyone. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys Maria V Snyder or Morgan Rice books.
About the book The story started with the two princesses who got separated when their land (Arbinad) was conquered by their neighbouring country (Erlingue). Their journey began on a different path, where one stayed behind to fight for their land (Princess Kat) and the other escaped to safety (Princess Lucy). Princess Kat is brave and trained to fight as she is the heir of Arbinad. While Princess Lucy is the youngest sister of Princess Kat. She loves to read and she is the smartest of the two. The Erlingue has two princes. Prince Eric is the heir to the throne. He is evil and will get what he wants no matter what. Prince Thomas is the youngest of them. He is kind and has a different view on how he will run the palace and Erlingue, only if he is going to be the next King. They both hate each other. What will be the faith of the four royalties?
My Thoughts I like the plot of the story but how it is written is a little bit lost when it comes to Princess Kat. There are times that it is starting to get exciting but then I get disappointed with the outcomes. There is also a lot of repetition. On the other hand, I like the flow of the story when it comes to Princess Lucy, it’s smooth and has no disappointment. A bit unclear on the purpose of the creature from the mirror but maybe there are more of this creature in the next book. Overall, I give this three stars.
Book Cover and Title: Nothing special on the book cover. Might not catch my eyes if it is on the shelf. Same thoughts with the title.
Synopsis 📖: An alliance destroyed. A kingdom defeated. Kat and her sister Lucy, the princesses of Arbinad, find themselves on the brink of war with the neighboring country of Erlingue after wedding negotiations were successfully made between the two kingdoms. When the kingdom of Arbinad falls, Lucy is forced to flee to an old alliance with a handful of guards and servants to preserve the royal line while Kat defies her father's order and chooses to fight instead. Captured by the enemy, Kat must do everything to prevent their captors from discovering her true identity.
Prince Thomas of Erlingue never wanted a war. Instead, he finds himself seated next to his father as the people of Arbinad are slaughtered meaninglessly. When his father dies and his cruel brother Eric acends the throne, it is all Thomas can do to prevent conflict between them. But when Thomas finds Kat thrown before him and Eric, he realizes he can't sit idle any longer. The trick is getting Kat to trust him again. And staying alive in the process ⚔️

My Review 📝: I loved the different points of view from all four characters and the plot was really interesting! I also loved the dynamic between Thomas and Kat as well as the view of what was happening from Lucy's standpoint in her newfound sanctuary. Though the different points of view sometimes overlapped too much, it was still interesting to see things from a new perspective and to be an outside observer to the different situations the characters got themselves into.
With their country under attack, Kat and Lilly are ordered to flee. Kat being the heir to the throne, her father wants to protect her, but she feels a duty to her country.
Eric is the one responsible for the attack, as heir to the throne in another country. Thomas doesn’t agree with his brother’s decisions and has to find a way to defeat and stop him.
By fate, Lat and Thomas, who were betrothed in a diplomatic agreement, cross paths and have to work together for both of their countries. Unfortunately they are both wanted criminals and due to be hanged.
Will they be able to survive the wrath or Eric who is working with a dark side? Will Eric be able to take over the world as he has planned?
I enjoyed reading this book a lot. There’s a lot of action going on that keeps you interested. It is told from multiple points of view as well as from different countries.
It’s well thought out and written. There’s so much happening across 5 countries and everything works together. There’s nothing that just doesn’t make sense, which can happen in fantasy sometimes.
The characters and diverse and well developed.
I look forward to reading the next book when I have a chance to see what happens next.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for a read and review**
🙈 Possibly Minor Spoilers Ahead 🙉
The Heir was a bit different than the books I’m used to but I appreciated the strong female characters. If your looking for a Milan meets Hunger Games type of book then this is it! The book itself moves through a lot of action including war scenes, planned attacks with a hint of light romance.
What I Liked 💎 The story was intriguing 💎 Multiple POVs 💎 The author did a good job describing places while also moving the story along
What I Didn’t Like 🖤For me the ending fell flat 🖤 I felt like the last dozen chapters were written by someone else 🖤 There wasn’t enough backstory on The Creature
Overall I enjoyed this book but I could tell very early on that the author was trying to set it up for a sequel. Unfortunately because of this the ending fell flat to me. I thought the book got a bit jumpy towards the end, and a few questions I had about the big bad in this book never really got answered. Personally I would have preferred a bit more information acting as a teaser of sorts. I would consider buying the sequel, The Crown, but I’m on the fence. If you enjoy a quick read then check out The Heir!

I hadn’t come across The Heir by Claudia Klein until a few weeks ago, so I have the lovely bookstagram community to thank for this one!
In The Heir, Princess Kat conceals her gender & identity so she can join her people & fight the invaders from Erlingue. However, it all comes apart when Arbinad falls. Now a prisoner, can this heir regain her freedom? King Eric of Erlingue has made a pact with evil & is on the war path to become emperor of the world…
I got Mulan vibes at the beginning of The Heir, but the story soon goes on its own unique journey. Claudia has packed Kat’s story with action & despair, which is the perfect combination for a fantasy novel! The side characters were just as intriguing as Kat, if not more so. And even though the Creature behind everything was barely fleshed out, I still enjoyed the classic tug of war between good & evil!
The Heir by Claudia Klein is an entertaining middle-grade/YA fantasy read. While it doesn’t get too in depth with the storyline, it’s certainly fun!
My Perspective: The titled was what intrigued me, as I am a reader with a fancy for royal romance story. The Heir, was an interesting read. The story began with an eerie sense, then delved into a country being conquered. Siblings being ripped apart - separated by war and hate. The struggle for power is something most men are overwhelmed with and would do anything to have, being ruthless and down right wicked, going the wrong way. I like Lucy, she was caring and saw that everyone was equal despite social status and she tried her very best to care for her subjects. Kat also stood out as she wanted to help her father from the start to save her people but she couldn't. Thomas indeed made a better king, and I hope in the other book he lived up to being who his father thought he could or was.
This is my honest perspective. I did receive an ARC copy of this book from the Author. Reading it, I found the story to be okay just not my favorite. There is very much hope and potential, that one will enjoy. This is a recommended read for those who love the genre of Fantasy and or historical novel.
Having a hard time rating this book, because although it was a struggle to get through it, there’s something to the storyline, to the world that’s built, that’s of interest.
The summary of the book gives a lot of promise, but the book itself doesn’t quite deliver. In terms of storyline it does follow the summary, sure, but that’s one of the few positive things I can say about it.
The book itself is too flat, with a lot of telling instead of showing and the whole thing leans towards boring this way. What doesn’t aid is the repetition -sometimes even happening within the same paragraph or sentence. The confusing thing is also that there’s multiple pov’s, without a clear indication when it switches. Overall it’s easily discerned, but even so it’s weird when it pops from one to another.
What also would have improved this book, would have been to not have Eric’s pov and instead have a build up to that information, to have the other characters figure that stuff out with us as readers. That would have made for a great plottwist, action and suspense. And Lucy’s pov felt a bit unneeded too -except perhaps for the Everscene stuff. Because her pov was honestly boring, flat out.
This was a departure from the type of fantasy I usually read, but it was a nice change of pace. It definitely felt more skewed toward a younger audience with the fast pacing and dialogue.
I enjoyed the characters, especially Lucy and Katherine. I would have liked to get more of a glimpse into their thoughts throughout the book. The plot was interesting, and I’m intrigued about The Creature and what role he will play in the next book.
As I said, the pacing is fast. I’m used to longer adult fantasy, so this was a definite change for me. I can see it being great for middle school/teenage kids because it would keep their focus. For me, personally, I would have loved to take some of those times where we jumped forward a week or month and seen what the characters were doing and really immerse myself into their world.
This would be good for someone looking for a fast read and a lighter fantasy story!
Firstly, this is not a genre that I normally gravitate to. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this book! The writing style is different than what I am used to but the characters were brought to life. My favorite character was Lucy. I refuse to give any of the plot here as I believe you should read the book for yourself! I gave The Heir four stars for a couple of reasons. The book was very detailed and as I said I enjoyed the plot, but there were descriptions in some scenes that seemed out of place or repeated one too many times. I also am intrigued by "the Creature" but there was little information regarding the lore behind it. It seems like we will learn more about "it" in a sequel which I will be waiting to read and find out what part it has to play in Katherine and Thomas's world.
I received a digital copy of the book by the author herself which in no way will affect the honesty of my review.
It’s a 3.5 ⭐️ read for me.
The story was quite nice in my opinion. We follow medieval kingdoms going to war, we have a slight romance subplot and explore different allegiances between the characters.
It’s definitely a slow-paced book, which is something I’m not a huge fan of. The other thing I didn’t quite like is that it’s in 3rd person. I find myself reading books in 3rd person way slower and this book is no exception. I was also quite confused by the frequent jumps between POVs. Also, this book is YA fantasy, it’s written simply and it’s easy to understand which I liked.
The story was engaging and I feel like this book will appeal to both younger people as well as someone in their early twenties.
I enjoyed the story this book had to tell. I do wish there was a bit more character development and I feel the plot was a bit rushed with lots of time between story points. However, I loved the description of the settings and the world building involved. Beware, there is a little cliffhanger leaving the book open for the second part of the story. The biggest question I have at the end of this is… what happened to Andrew!?! It sounds like he died but no one mentioned anything about him after the last POV we have from him and no one was upset about his death if he did die? Maybe that’s answered in the second book. Overall a good read!
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review, but I will purchase this book and plan to continue on with the series.
The world building and story line were very intriguing and fast paced. THe story left alot of unanswered questions and this is one of the reasons why I will be continuing on.
The book got 4 stars as I found the mid page changing of POV’s very jarring until I found my feet with it. The multiple POV’s were very good and I enjoyed the multiple perspectives. IThe story of the Princess and the people around them made them come to live for me.
Great debut novel and looking forward to more from Claudia and I would recommend this to young adults and anyone who loves a fast paced fantasy.
Looking forward to continuing on with this series.
I can dramatically sigh or roll my eyes enough to adequately portray my annoyance at this book. It started out ok then seemed to wonder into areas that didn’t make sense. The characters were annoying and the plot a rambling mess. But the final 20% is what really had me questioning my choices in books. For example, Thomas made a plan to kill the king; but somehow forgets the king has personal guards with him! He’s the prince! Grew up in the castle! With the king. How could he forget that? Later we have this instance where, well math is hard apparently. Thomas states that only he, Kathrine, and Lucy would be riding then asks for four horses. I just can’t read any more of this series.
Book: The Heir Author: Claudia Klein Rating: 4.5/5
Lovers of fantasy and adventure will surely enjoy this! The captivating story of these characters had me hooked. The level of detail was great and as someone who doesn’t read many fantasy books, this one was easy for me to follow.
The complexities of the battle of Erlingue and Arbinad and the relationships between Thomas, Lucy and Kat were very compelling.
This is only book 1 in the series, and I definitely plan to read The Crown (Book 2) next. Overall, a great series start for the author and I enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this for a book club pick as well if you like the fantasy genre!
Set in medieval times telling the tale of two countries at war with an evil force involved.
This is a quick read, fast paced and entertaining. The characters are well rounded and I liked the relationship between the sisters Lucy and Katherine.
It's written from multiple points of view with mid chapter changes but it doesn't detract too much from the story,
It leaves you with some questions which set it up nicely for a second book.
All in all a decent debut book which I think younger fantasy readers would enjoy.

The Heir by Claudia Klein is an absolute gem that had me hooked right from the start. This book is a perfect blend of romance, suspense, and family drama that kept me glued to its pages. Klein's storytelling is incredible, bringing the characters to life in a way that made me feel like I was right there with them. The plot is full of surprises that kept me up way past my bedtime cause I was so determined to finish the book! I loved how the characters grew and changed throughout the story—it felt like they were real people. If you're looking for an exciting and emotional read, I highly recommend The Heir.
I really enjoyed the over all feel of this book. It is a great adventure story about 2 different princesses that have to leave their kingdom due to unexpected war. One decides to stay behind and help fight for her kingdom along side her father and brother. The other is sent to a farther away kingdom to be kept safe. I would definitely consider this more of a YA book then anything else. There are hints of romantic likings that are rather sweet between the prince of the kingdom of the enemy and one of the princesses. Over all I was splendidly surprised at the story. Gives very much mediaeval king Arthur vibes, definitely going to finish out the series.
