She stole his world. He's got twenty-four hours to get it back.
Although Liam Tallamore can’t remember the first fourteen years of his life, he’s built a happy home with his wife, Carly, and their two children in suburban New Jersey … until one Friday afternoon when everything changes.
While cashing his paycheck, he’s told his bank accounts have been emptied. Once at home, he learns Carly has left him for her first love—one he never knew existed. Most devastating of all, she’s taken their eight-year-old daughter, Rayelle, and is preparing to leave the country. As if things couldn’t get worse, he has no idea where their twenty-year-old son is or why he’s been unreachable for the past two months.
With total distrust in law enforcement and no clues to guide him, Liam hops on a train to New York City, Carly’s hometown. Through the next twenty-four hours, Liam goes on a wild, unforgiving, frantic search through rain-soaked Manhattan, experiencing the brightest and the darkest humanity has to offer. This is the story of a man who refuses to quit, determined to find “a needle in a haystack,” and who, in searching for the children he loves, doesn’t yet realize he’s searching for himself as well.
AUTHOR'S I write characters as I hear them speak to me. This novel contains non-gratuitous expletives. If this is not to your liking, please don't read this book. Thank you.

Author Brodey weaves an emotion-filled, thrilling tale that will keep you on edge to the end. Buckle up, a highly recommended read for fans of suspense and mystery!
TWICE A BROKEN BREATH is an expertly crafted and suspenseful story I could not put down.
Liam Tallamore’s wife Carly takes off with their daughter Rayelle, after cleaning out their joint bank accounts. A note from Carly informs him that she and her lover are taking Rayelle to an undisclosed location out of the country in 24 hours. They are not returning.
Liam is devastated. And angry. If he notifies the police, he’ll never see his beloved “Ray-Ray” again. His journey to track down his daughter is harrowing and unforgettable.
Having read All That Was Taken, as well as Ms. Brodey’s delightful romantic comedies, I already knew what a talented and multifaceted writer she is. TWICE A BROKEN BREATH is a thrilling read and will have you rooting for Liam every step of the way.
I have read fiction written by this author before. Her writing is solid and competent. I think it takes exceptional talent to devise an intricate and complex plot—especially one with so many characters--and Lisette Brodey handled it with aplomb.
The story line of this novel, TWICE A BROKEN BREATH, by fine author Lisette Brodey was quirky, psychological, mysterious, and well- constructed.
If I had to pick one thing that is most difficult for a writer to pull off and I, as a writer never do, it is to write eye dialect. Brodey used this to distinguish the voice of a malevolent character. It slows the reading, but in this instance was extremely effective.
Brava! This was an excellent novel and a pleasure to read!
Liam stops at the bank only to find out all his money is gone, and accounts are closed. In a panic, he rushes home to find his wife had left him for her first love and taken their daughter with them. There is a note explaining they are leaving the country within twenty-four hours with a powerful threat he’d never see his daughter again if he followed her or called the authorities. Knowing time is of the essence, he goes where he thinks his wife and child will be in New York. He hops on a train in this fast-paced chase that doesn’t slow down until almost the very end. Liam is a multi-layered character who not only has forgotten the first fourteen years of his life because of an accident, but his wife has deceived him, and he now only has a limited time to find the daughter he cherishes. It’s a heavy load, but he finds help in unexpected places along the way, along with people who don’t want him looking. There were many unexpected twists, a couple I had a hunch about, but it all added to Liam’s confusion and determination. I finally got to catch my breath close to the end as it all came together. An exciting page-turner for those who like a thriller with heart and one I can easily recommend.
This is an action packed thriller with complex characters who enter the story and insert themselves into the carefully crafted plot over a very short but intense 24 hours.
One can only imagine how traumatic it must be to find after many years, with two children and a stable home life, that you have been living a lie and all that you know has been whipped from under you. Particularly when according to your parents the first fourteen years of your life were wiped from your mind following an accident.
The author has a great sense of timing and makes sure that despite the plot being very fast paced with some fascinating twists and turns, the reader is not left behind and is given adequate hints and clues to keep turning the pages in search of answers. Just when you think you have figured it out… another element is introduced which sets you off on another path.
Most of the cast of this action packed story are flawed and have pasts they find difficult to put behind them. This results in unexpected kindness, support and a determination to help this troubled man on his mission to find his daughter through the rain soaked night streets of New York. With time against him Liam Tallamore is about to discover secrets and relationships beyond his wildest dreams.
A gritty thriller with great characters and I can highly recommend.
Liam's life changes in one instant, when he realizes his wife Carly and Daughter Rayelle are gone. Bank accounts emptied and a note by Carly telling him she is fleeing the country and not to inform police. Add to it, their twenty year old son has been out of touch for months.
He does not heed her warning and sets out on the most stressful, dangerous twenty-four hours of his life. Traveling from New Jersey to the rain-soaked streets of New York City, he searches for his family and for unanswered questions that have lain dormant for years.
The Story moves at a fast pace with intense moments, twisting and turning along the way. Liam is very likable making his journey more compelling. I was on edge as tensions arise and dangerous situations occur, hoping he can find his daughter before it is too late.
The plot thickens as secrets slowly surface, had me yearning to learn more. I was pulled in from the start (and) could not let go until the satisfying end. Lisette Brodey knows how to pull you in deep and not let go.
Overall I found TWICE A BROKEN BREATH very enjoyable. I highly recommend to all. A true five-star read.
Lisette Brodey is an author who always delivers, as anyone familiar with her writing will know. Twice a Broken Breath deviates from the themes of her previous novels and fits comfortably into the suspense genre. A heart-pounding story set in New York, it is a fast-paced novel that’s full of intrigue. As details of the plot have already been well covered, I’ll focus on the aspects of it that appealed to me. In Liam Tallamore’s frantic search for his beloved daughter, his desperation is palpable and we are with him every step of the way. His race against the clock takes place on the sodden streets of Manhattan and this serves as an excellent metaphor for Liam’s state of mind; the relentless downpour and murky atmosphere give more weight to his feelings of despair which I thought was a clever touch on the author’s part. We meet some diverse characters, their motivation to help Liam not always clear, raising questions in the reader’s mind. In the thick of all the harrowing events, there are some touching moments, too, with characters like the homeless man demonstrating how kindness and generosity of heart still exists amongst the destitute and those most in need. For me, there is nothing more gratifying than a well-executed conclusion. As I expected, Ms Brodey does an excellent job of filling in the gaps and answering the unresolved questions. The plot has a series of twists and turns but, like a jigsaw puzzle, everything fits together nicely to make a satisfying whole. I highly recommend this latest novel from a very accomplished writer and look forward to her next. 5*
Compelling and Emotional Story of a Father's determination
Author Lisette Brodey delivers a gripping story which follows Liam Tallamore as he makes a decision that will forever change his life. It's an emotional story of a father on a desperate pursuit to find his child. Through many twists and turns, Liam never waivers in his hunt. The ending was one major twist I never saw coming. The story deserves six stars. I highly recommend this book.
Lisette Brodey's "Twice a Broken Breath" is a riveting suspense novel that will leave you breathless. The protagonist, Liam Tallamore, has his life turned upside down by the flip of a coin in just 24 hours. What would you do if something like this happened to you? What would you do if you discovered your shared bank account empty and your significant other missing, having taken your precious child with them? This gripping novel deftly blends a literally forgotten past (Liam has no recollection of his first fourteen years of life) with a shattered present, resulting in a suspenseful puzzle that keeps readers engrossed. I certainly couldn't put this book down. The richly developed cast of characters, particularly the vibrant New Yorkers, truly shines in this book. The story moves at a breakneck pace, adding to the sense of urgency, and Liam's never-ending string of misfortunes, including the unforgiving weather, keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lisette Brodey's ability to neatly tie up all loose ends, providing readers with a deeply satisfying conclusion, akin to a perfectly wrapped gift, is one of the book's standout features. "Twice a Broken Breath" is a suspenseful journey full of unexpected twists and turns, making it a must-read for suspense fans. Lisette Brodey tells a masterful story that will keep you turning the pages until the end.
The action starts in the first few paragraphs and doesn't let up until the end. Liam Tallamore finds his life up-ended, but though he's been afraid of *something* for most of his life, he overcomes his fear -- and his wife Carly's threats -- to save both of the children he loves. He just knows that the answers are going to be where he met Carly, but he doesn't know that he's going to have to dig deep into his own past to get to the real truth.
As Liam races through the longest night of his life, I felt like I was in the claustrophobic cabs, seedy bars, and rain-pounded streets along with him. The pay off at the end was well-deserved for both the main character and the reader.
Wow! I had no idea what a sentimental adventure awaited when I began this book! What a pageturner!
The storyline has more twists and turns than a pretzel and will have you on the edge of your seat for what comes next!
A gamut of emotions await the readers! This book is very well written, providing a clear image in your minds eye, putting you right in the middle of the scene with the characters. The diverseness of the characters bring a realism to the incredible plot.
Wonderful life lessons abound as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey!
I was drawn to the great cover art first. After I read the blurb, I definitely wanted to read it. This is an amazing, intense, gut-wrenching story. The opening scene hooked me! And the story gets better chapter by chapter.
Liam Tallamore's life is turned upside down when he goes to withdraw money from the bank, only to find that someone has drained both of his accounts. He fears the worst, that his wife has done something that will change their lives forever. Sure enough, she's taken his money and their daughter. She warns him in a goodbye note not to come after them and not to call the police. He agrees with the last part, but no way is he going to let her take his child from him.
Liam heads to New York from New Jersey, to where their life together began. Instinct tells him this is where he has to go. There are so many puzzle pieces (secrets) that start to fall together, albeit a little at a time. Those powerful puzzle pieces lead to danger and seedy areas of the Big Apple. He almost gets snuffed out a few times. The only thing that keeps him going is the desire to save his daughter. He also has an adopted son, Oliver - his wife's boy from a previous relationship. The author mentions him early on in the story and then seamlessly brings him in later, where he plays a significant role.
So many events and twists happen to Liam that I thought he wouldn't survive, let alone find his child. With all the darkness, literally in the foul weather and time of day, and figuratively in some of the nefarious characters who impede his search, all hope seems lost. But the author cleverly provided light and hope by giving him other characters who surprisingly and confusingly have his back.
While Liam is dealing with all that madness, he's having flashbacks about something. He has no idea what that's about and tries to put them out of his head because they're a distraction. There's no time for him to figure out what they are or mean.
I don't want to give away too much or it will rob you of those 'holy mackerel moments'.
For me, this book was unputdownable. (Although, I had to several times, but I couldn't wait to get back to it)
The ending was spectacular! All questions were answered, every hint dropped early on was made clear. All twists and turns served a great purpose (including Liam's flashbacks).
Side note: I like how the author put a drawing of Liam with an umbrella and rain at the end of each chapter.
I love Ms. Brodey’s books because she is a master of building suspense and creating likeable, believable characters. With many books, it takes you a while to understand and warm up to the protagonists. With Ms. Brodey’s unique talent, the reader is drawn to the characters’ plight, understands their motivations, and you become invested all within the first couple of paragraphs. At that point, she doesn’t let you go. The action never stops. The surprises appear at every turn. New twists take you in another direction. This was all the case in Twice A Broken Breath. I was hooked from page one and felt like I was on a Tilt-a Whirl until I finished the last page.
Without warning, Liam finds out that his wife has cleaned out and closed their checking accounts. His young daughter is missing. Their clothes are gone. The note his wife left says he may never see his daughter again. His young adult son is missing too. All his worst fears are realized. Things he never imagined. He has 24 hours to find his daughter. His wife Carly is from New York City, so that is where he goes.
As his journey begins, the reader is right there with him. Feeling every emotion, challenge, regret, indecision, rage, recrimination, heartbreak, desperation, and paranoia. The vivid descriptions as he searches a rain-soaked NYC are masterful. The clock is ticking, and we feel the frustration grow with the passing of each minute. The search becomes a journey into his past and how it ties to his present. Every character becomes significant. Not one interaction or word is wasted, drawing us deeper and deeper into the story.
The plot is face-paced, complex, and perfectly woven. You will visualize every step, feel every emotion, and hang on every word. I highly recommend this heart-pounding thriller. Ms. Brodey is a wonderful storyteller.
I'm already an admirer of this talented author's work, so I anxiously awaited the release of Twice a Broken Breath. Prepare for lip biting, breath holding, and unexpected twists and turns as they track with each page. Oh, and an ending that's as complex as the story delivers an unexpected punch. Make that a dozen unexpected punches. This incredible story is a breath stealer in the best possible way.
Frustration and worry build from chapter one. The character of Liam latches on to you and pulls you with him through his 24 hours of past, present, and future nightmares where he resides. We witness his human imperfections and those he can't name. We feel his angst and anger at having his daughter ripped from his life by a wife that's covered in lies.
As the reader, we go with Liam on this 24-hour hunt to find Rayelle before his wife leaves the country with another man, but something shifts within us. We come to hate the clock…Liam's clock.
The night unfolds in a series of synchronistic encounters that keep Liam moving toward discovering Carly's past that's now rolled into Liam's present. We journey with him on the streets of NYC and sample where life gets real, and characters grow more disturbing. Have faith, we meet others who befriend Liam in unexpected ways. Brodey is gifted at delivering characters that we sit back and ask if these people exist. They're so real they must.
Somehow, you feel if you stop reading, you're letting Liam down and delaying his search for his daughter. You'll see what I mean soon enough. Here's a suggestion: Plan to read this suspense-driven story over a weekend and order in pizza. You aren't going anywhere until the last page.
Discovering your bank accounts have been wiped out is enough to turn the toughest of us into a quivering mess but combine this with arriving home to an empty house only to discover a letter from your wife declaring that she’s leaving you for the true love of her life and has taken your daughter too is your worst nightmare. The missive – infused with threats cautioning against contacting the police – declare the intentions of wife Carly to leave the country with daughter Rayelle within the next 24 hours.
This is the reality that faces Liam Tallamore in Lisette Brodey’s gripping new release ‘Twice a Broken Breath.’
The story – set over a 24 hour period – chronicles Liam’s frantic search for his daughter. The author expertly encapsulates the immense pressure coupled with the overwhelming fear and anxiety Liam is struggling to comprehend as he pounds the streets of New York in the driving rain, desperate for a clue or sign in his ongoing search. Is there something locked away in the depths of his sub-conscious unwittingly guiding him?
I quickly became invested in Liam’s quest as this fast paced suspense mystery unfolded. I found myself battling my own feelings of frustration, rooting for Liam and willing him on as time and again, he came up against one obstacle after another. Will he ever reach Rayelle in time? Will he even survive this search?
Author Brodey’s creative plotting gives the reader plenty of food for thought as clues from Liam’s past, combined with information that is uncovered throughout his search culminate in an unpredictable ending that will catch your breath!
Twice a Broken Breath is one of those books that grips you on the first page and doesn’t let go until the very end. The mystery of main character, Liam Tallamore’s, disappearing wife Carly and young daughter, Rayelle, causes a whirlpool of emotions in him. The rage he feels at Carly clearing out their bank accounts and leaving him to spend the rest of her days with the true love of her life is greatly overshadowed by the fact that she has taken his beloved Rayelle with her.
Most of the story plays out in New York as Liam pursues his desperate bid to find Rayelle before Carly and her lover leave the country with her. He has a mere 24 hours to find them and the events that unfold reflect the desperate rush, and the constant, pouring rain is in keeping with the anguish Liam feels that time is rapidly running out. During that time, he meets a number of unconventional characters, some of whom help him in his quest and others who toss further obstacles in his path.
The action gallops along as the precious hours tick by and the heavy, drenching rain shows no signs of abating. Ms Brodey cleverly entwines the story of Liam’s earlier life into the high-speed action. It is through the new friends who help him in his search for Rayelle that he gradually remembers what happened during the early years of his life in New York that seemed to be blocked from his mind.
All in all, this book is a very well written, fast paced and suspenseful mystery with a great cast of diverse characters and lots of twists and turns. The ending is particularly good, drawing all loose ends together with a couple of unexpected revelations.
Brodey tucked me into this book from the beginning. When there is strife and children in a marriage that was never the true and real love type, it tugs at my heart. I don't want to give away much of this book, yet I must write my review so that anyone reading my review understands my thought process and the emotions I felt. Before I go on, 24 hours - yes, in 24 hours a lot can happen and more in less than a week. Children or a child kidnapped, the underbelly and underworld nuances of metro New York City, people who did prison time for different things, a father who adopted one child, and fathered another child only to have second child snatched away by a deceitful and malicious wife is more than enough for me to be sad and angry that the cruelty happened. Children should never have to go through such trauma and harm. And a 20 year old son should not have to hide out just so he's not kidnapped and also taken to Italy of all places. Bad things happen to everyone in real life. That said, good things can happen to offset the pain and loss in one's heart. The way the author wove these elements together, the speed and frenetic pace in just 24 hours in NYC, strangers on a train, meeting a homeless man, working through a disassociate person's struggles, and a lot more blend perfectly with the laughter and joy of love, rescue, finding family, and enjoying life, despite the horrors of abuse and loss, being unloved by one's father for his brother, who spent time in prison, blame placed wrongly, I can go on and on. This story has all of this and a lot more. It touched my heart deeply. Well done!

Twice A Broken Breath is a suspense with two distinct threads interwoven perfectly together. The author has captured the heart-pounding moment when Liam Tallamore's world crashes. Not only has his wife, Carly, left him, but she has emptied their bank accounts and taken their daughter with her. Liam has just 24 hours to find his daughter before Carly leaves the country for good. This isn't just a race against time but a man's desperate, and agonising search as he faces his greatest fear—losing his daughter. The life he thought he had with Carly was a mirage and in confronting this Liam must acknowledge that Carly hates him to her core. She takes their daughter, not because she wants her, but to inflict further pain on Liam.
While there is a constant thread of urgency throughout the story, there are also tender moments, when Liam's kindness for another's plight leads to friendship. It is these wonderful moments that open the story to a multidimensional level. Bonds are formed, and as I learned more about Liam, the more I wanted to know. His path of self-discovery runs parallel to his frantic search for his daughter and the author does a skilful job in bringing these threads together.
This is a rich and powerful story that shows the lengths people will go to to selfishly hurt someone. It is a story of the darker side of life and the beauty in friendships, love—and the importance of family.
Liam has no memory of his life before age 14 when something happened that still steals his breath and sends him spiraling through flashbacks and panic attacks. When his wife, Carly, leaves him, taking their 8-year-old daughter with her, he follows her to New York City where people and places feel familiar even though he can’t remember them. He only has so much time to find his daughter before Carly takes her out of the country, and there are dangerous people standing in his way.
Told entirely in Liam’s POV, the pace starts strong and rips through most of the book. Liam’s amnesia creates a lot of mystery. I could tell there were connections between the characters that Liam was missing, and I did a lot of speculating as I read. The plot resolves at the 80% mark, and all questions and plot threads wrap up in the last 20% of the book with a much slower tell explaining Liam’s history.
Liam’s character was consistent throughout. He’s panicked and emotional and determined to get his daughter back. He was certainly fooled by Carly for years, since when she finally enters the picture, she’s awful. Secondary characters Marge and Ken are well rounded and vital to the plot; so is Chas who changes dramatically in the second half of the read.
I’m happy to recommend this read to fans of thrillers and mysteries who love a fast pace overall and are intrigued by a character’s search for self.
I was immediately drawn into the protagonist, Liam’s, broken world. His wife has left him and taken their youngest child. Determined to find his beloved daughter, Liam heads for New York, Carly’s hometown. And he only has twenty-four hours before they leave the country.
The unrelenting time pressure, Liam’s complex childhood and questions about his son add to the tension as he reaches New York. Here, he plunges into a crazy world, facing violence, desperation and the irony of profound kindness – all against a backcloth of incessant hammering rain, which threatens to thwart his efforts. But will he find his beloved Ray-Ray?
There is so much to commend this book; Liam’s multi-layered character offers a fascinating subplot. Each of the key personalities is gritty and excellently portrayed. And then there’s pace.
This pulsating thriller grabs the reader, leaving them breathless. That relentless rain, the ticking clock, Liam’s panic, the chase, and those bold characters combine to make it an incredibly suspenseful read. I loved the twists, turns and the slow reveal, which the author so skilfully uses to draw the threads together. This is a five-star novel with depth and heart.
"Twice a Broken Breath" is a mystery suspense novel by author Lisette Brodey. Readers become quickly hooked within the first chapter when main character, Liam, tries to cash his paycheck only to find that his account has been emptied and his wife has gone missing with their young daughter. From there, the author takes us on a wild ride to and through New York City while Liam fights to find his wife and daughter before they can flee the country. Trust me... it's a counted-down, 24 hour roller coaster ride of adventure and misadventure that leaves the reader feeling a little breathless as well. The story moves at a quick, almost frantic (matching Liam's state of mind) pace as the plot plays out, thickens, and takes more than a few turns. While the ending itself also held some nice, twisty surprises, I loved how all loose ends were addressed and tied up. I also fully appreciated how clues had been dropped throughout the storyline. A very cleverly written must-read for fans of mystery and suspense!
I fell in love with this book because of the title and the author. I’ve read several of Ms. Brodey’s novels and I know I’m always in for a treat. Her characters are original and inventive, and the plots always well thought out and twisty. Nothing beats a twisty plot, especially when it starts out so simply: Liam’s wife has taken his daughter, cleaned out their bank accounts, and is about to leave the country. He has twenty-four hours to find them. What could go wrong? Only EVERYTHING! But to be honest, a lot of things have to go right as well. And they do. This is where the cool and funky characters come into play. Oh, and there’s this little subplot running through the tale in which we learn Liam cannot recall the first fourteen years of his life. Well, well, well, what have we here? Don’t worry, it all gets explained in the end. After a few unsettling flashbacks and the introduction of another character, or two. Fabulous ending that neatly ties everything together with a pretty ribbon. Thank you, Ms. Brodey, I have only one question … may I have another?
Gathering allies and enemies along the way, Liam Tallamore is a man on a mission. His wife Carly has cleaned out their bank accounts, fled, and taken their daughter with her. Now Liam has twenty-four hours in a rainy New York City to track down his missing spouse before she disappears forever – with the daughter he loves. Secrets, lies, shady characters, and the ever-present threat of violence make for a nail-biting read. This is a pacey, atmospheric thriller delivered with style and imagination. And, impressively, author Lisette Brodey credibly puts herself into the head of the male protagonist. The clock ticks down… I have read most of Ms. Brodey’s works and this is a fine addition to her canon. Great stuff!
Fast-paced thriller mystery that starts out with a bang! I can't resist a thriller that hits the ground running. The book immediately drew me with an original and captivating sequence of events. The book was a thrilling web of suspense and intrigue set in the backdrop of an urgent and unexpected scenario.
Excellent mystery crime thriller! I read in it a day because I could not put it down. It’s one of those books that keeps one up late to keep reading! The book’s intense, suspenseful and intelligent plot carried the unexpected beginning scenario to a magnificent crescendo.
An unexpected crime thriller that is not your typical mystery as the book is also about healing, love and family in NYC. Wonderful read!
Lisette Brodey can cover many genres; having written exceptional YA fiction, comic romance, and interwoven dramatic tales. She has a feel for the human condition that appears in all her work. But there are few things she has a better feel for than the nature of loss. In Twice a Broken Breath her protagonist, Liam, a man of lost memory, stands on the cusp of losing everything else that matters to him, love and family. His is a “night journey” insomuch as it takes him from trial to tribulation, and from darkness to light. Brodey has outdone herself - again - and I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Gripping, fast-paced roller coaster of a read! This book is fast, everything happens in one night in New York city. Liam's wife has cleared off with his money and daughter. he has one 24 hours to track her down, face his demons and old enemies. A story within a story, edge of your seat stuff with great characters, and damn it rains a lot! Check it out, well written. Highly recommend.
A truly wonderfully captivating read with twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat! This author knows her craft! How can one person lose everything in the blink of an eye? Who’s behind destroying him and his family? Where are his wife and daughter? A highly recommended read!
