Expedition Overseers are considered the heroes of Hevalth, maintaining peace by locating and capturing mystical creatures and criminals. The International Exam guarantees such a title, drawing thousands of applicants every year with its promise of wealth and prestige; strong and weak, royal and commoner. Though the challenges and length of the exam are unknown, one thing remains clear: not all who take the exam live to try again.
Five of this year's aspirants, strangers to one another, each have hidden reasons to brave the perils of the exam. One seeks revenge, another power, and one merely to support his desperate family. As they struggle to survive against other competitors, mystical creatures, mysterious magic, and themselves, they discover a secret within their world that will change the course of their lives forever. For these five, the exam is more than mere glory or fame, and the future they vie for might not survive what the past has unleashed.
Angela Funk is a fantasy and sci-fi author based in Iowa. She started writing short stories and full-length novels in elementary school, and her love for writing continued throughout her adolescence. School lessons were often lost on her, as she always had her nose in a book. Six months after graduating from the University of Iowa for a B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation, she made her dreams a reality and published her fantasy debut, The Heroic Facade. When she is not writing or daydreaming of fantastical worlds, Angela can be found watching anime, hiking, and spending time with her fiancé and cat.
The Heroic Facade is a fresh take on the fantasy genre. As an ARC reader, I was one of the first who had the chance to read this book. For someone who has read their fair share of fantasy/science fiction novels, I was consistently impressed by the world building and new elements at play. The plot synopsis and allure of a deadly tournament will draw you in, but the characters will keep you reading. Each has their own motivations, some more pure than others, but you will find yourself rooting for them as they go through each stage of the tournament. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is either a fan of the genre or someone who is perhaps interested in exploring what the genre has to offer. I very much look forward to the following books in the series.
Overall impression: I adored this book and I find myself recommending it all the time because the characters and scenes just stuck with me so much even though I read it almost a year ago. You get multi-POV from the 5 main characters (my favorite type of story!) so I would highly recommend this series to Six of Crows and Red Rising fans. I loved all the characters but my favorite was Galen, with second favorite being Eli. 😁 They were all distinct with individual goals and personalities, and at so many points in their interactions, I felt so seen and related to them sooo much! And of course the book had a ton of epic action and adventure too. As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, my absolute favorite part was how unique and different it felt from anything else I've read. It wasn't just rehashing the same storylines and I feel like that is so hard to do well and speaks to Angela's creativity and talent as a writer!
Book Summary: The Heroic Façade tells the story of five diverse characters in their late teens and young twenties who are all taking the International Exam for the first time, a test that grants the few who pass riches and prestige but is deadly for most who fail.
The five main leads are all multi-dimensional, believable characters. They felt like real people, and I was able to connect with all of them. As the five strangers team up to take the exam together, they developed friendships that were enjoyable and believable; the progression of the relationships made me like each character more as the book went on. By the end, I really wanted all of them to pass.
The novel is set in a fictional, fantasy world with a "dash" of magic, which is my favorite type of fantasy story. I had expected a medieval fantasy setting based on the (first edition) cover, but I was pleasantly surprised that this fantasy world was actually most similar to modern day. I haven't read a modern fantasy with a similar world before, which kept it fresh. The mood managed to remain light-hearted and enjoyable, and never became overly dark. Overall, the novel was very well-written and I am looking forward to reading any potential sequels to come.
I have to admit I nearly DNFed this one. There are so many characters and an attempt at depth with them, but I found the plot slow and the number of character POVs made the story a touch convoluted at times. The characters aren’t necessarily poorly written, but I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of POVs and less enthused with each shift in the story.
There is also a lot of violence if you’re sensitive to that, a bit of language, but no sex (that I recall), and some minor Hunger Games vibe. But it’s voluntary Hunger Games by adults, and you get a whole host of different people who are willing to fight to the death in order to win for various reasons.
In addition to that, almost everyone is keeping some sort of secret and everyone has a goal outside of the games. I liked that the characters were all a bit different with notably different backgrounds, but it also had a very difficult time keeping my attention. I had to force my way through.
The book ends on a cliffhanger drawing you to book 2 to learn more about the secrets and the characters after their challenges.
So why 3 stars? According to Goodreads, 3 stars is “I liked it.” 2 stars is “it was ok.” I think I fall just under the three stars, to be honest, but I really think it was just my particular tastes rather than anything being wrong with the book itself.
This book gives Hunger Game vibes. Over 300 initial contestants for the “exam”, but only 8 victors.
It started off a little slow. I had a hard time getting into it initially. I was a little confused about the world setup, what was going on, etc.
That being said, it definitely picks up. From the moment the “exam” begins, everything starts happening pretty quickly. 5 contestants team up together and endure horrible situations to try to win their spot.
Warning: this book has quite a bit of violence. Fairly detailed fights to the death. If that’s not your thing or it makes you sick, this book is NOT for you. Reading it for me isn’t too bad, but does make me a little squeamish.
The characters are interesting and unique in their own ways. They are definitely changed by the events they endure.
The world building is definitely interesting. The plot is a little twisty. You don’t know the next phase until you’re in it. Everyone has a past, a secret, and a reason to be there.
I’m hoping the questions I have will get answered in the next book. I look forward to seeing where everyone ends up.
"The Heroic Facade" is the first installment in the Forsaken Destiny Trilogy and the novel immediately sets its thematic sincerity by beginning with a dedication that sets a tone of heartfelt belief. The included world map is very impressive and sets the stage for a medieval fantasy that is refreshing. The dialogue is very distinct with the modern, urban-magical landscape, avoiding genre staleness. The narrative is driven by five well-developed, authentic protagonists whose relatable struggles, awkwardness, and believable friendships anchor the Young Adult theme. These characters are compelling because they are allowed to stumble and grow, a deliberate and welcome distinction from the overused "flawless" protagonist trope. The plot features a delightful balance of epic adventure and lighthearted moments, punctuated by unexpected turns and effective action sequences. The author's use of simple humor and action scenes demonstrates a focus on creating engaging fantasy novels. Overall the multiple protagonists to invest in and adventure toward the conclusion is why I highly recommend finishing the series.
The Heroic Facade by Angela Funk has Hunger Games vibes and that’s why I, as a great Hunger Games fan, wanted to read this book. Five characters have to take an exam to see who gets riches or who will pay the ultimate price.
The writing style is great, and thanks to the multiple POVs you get a lot of information and intel about those characters. They are all well developed and they come across as real people. They are amazing and you want all of them to pass the exam. I got sucked into the story right from the beginning and I really enjoyed reading this unique dystopian story. There were plottwists along the way which kept it even more interesting and fascinating. When I started reading this book I had no idea where the storyline would go, but I really loved it a lot.
Highly recommened for a Hunger Games fan, but alsof or those who love dystopian novels with a great plot, in a believable setting, some magic, and with a great flowing and fast paced writing style.
In a fantasy/dystopian world where people choose to enter deadly games with the chance for wealth, prestige, and other prizes, 300 people vie for one of the 8 winning spots. This was one of the most enjoyable dystopian books I've read this year! It was intriguing from the first chapter and proceeded to keep me enthralled the whole way through. The work building was really unique and the characters were amazing! I love all the POVs and plot twists. It was a little violent and had decent levels of gore , if you aren’t into that. The found family trope was amazing and I was so sad when the book ended. I absolutely cannot wait for book 2 and definitely recommend grabbing this book for an amazing read!
This is one of those stories that admittedly has a slow start, but once I got further in the book, I just couldn't put it down. It's completely understandable for the introductions to be slow because there are five amazing characters whom we see the story through their POV.
Through a fast paced action packed storyline (that can get a little gruesome at times... Wasn't enough to bother me though), we see the story of these five strangers, who couldn't be even remotely similar but face the same trials, which get harder and harder as the story progresses. Each character is well designed and has their own quirks and individuality to make them a unique asset for the team.
Really enjoyed this and looking forward to the next one.
If you are missing the emotions Hunger Games gave you, and you are a fan of fantasy and world building then give these books a chance and you will be very pleased! And be prepared to love all 5 main characters and root for them all. They all have everything to gain and everything to win and their stories are all unique and intriguing. It took me a bit to get into it but after the first 50 or so pages, I then couldn't put it down!
I love fantasy, and world building and this book had everything I am looking into books. Add this to your list of books you should read in 2024 and you will not regret it!
Wow! Angela did such an amazing job of creating FIVE multi-dimensional characters, following each of them together and separately, developing each of their relationships...it is very impressive. I didn't leave this book wanting for more of any one of them, I want more of all of them, but each of them was fleshed out about equally. No easy feat! They're all different from each other, their motives differing, and yet you're rooting for them all. Luckily, I already have book 2, and I'm reading it now so I can find out what happens next in this great story! One star for each main character!
This book gives me vibes mixing Goblet of Fire challenges that have both mental and physical requirements, but with the need for survival and ruthlessness of hunger games. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it. The characters have such varying backgrounds and reasons for partaking in the exam that I thought I could predict the ending, but was pleasantly wrong. I cannot wait to see where book 2 will take the characters.
This novel is absolutely for lovers of dystopian fiction. The story centers around five characters and their individual stories that intersect around a very Hunger Games-esque International Exam. The writing keeps you interested but the content is pretty bleak. That said, I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
What a refreshing story. It takes 5 different people and throws them into an exam that is sometimes a fight to the death. So many twists and turns and wonderful character and world building. The author mentioned it had hunger games vibes which had me grabbing the book immediately, but those vibes are but a shake of a spice lol. It’s much more deeper and intriguing. Loved every bit of it!
