Fake dating the hot grump next door until Halloween is more of a trick than a treat.
I only pretend to be the town psychic—which means my crystal ball never told me I’d be moving in with my elderly aunt and dealing with her hot, grumpy neighbor. Sure, she’s hilarious, and she’s letting me stay in her tiny guest house in return for dealing with her ‘ghost problem.’ The catch? I don’t really believe in the supernatural. Even worse, Ward Carlisle, her hunky neighbor, is a real pain in my pumpkin patch. The fact our families have been feuding over some land for centuries doesn’t help, either.
When Ward shows up at my fortune-telling booth at the town fall festival desperate for my help, he promises he’ll give my aunt the land she wants if I can fake a relationship with him until Halloween—and convince his ex-girlfriend we’re in love. I’m always down for a little mayhem, and if it means getting one up on prickly Ward, I’m totally game.
But bizarre occurrences keep pushing Ward and I together: spooky calls for help which have me running to him in the night, phantom cold spots which push us together for warmth, and visions of people who aren’t really there that scare me right into his arms. Even stranger, though, is all this time we’re spending together means I’m getting to see the real him… and I like it. Things between us start heating up just as the weather turns cold.
I’m not sure which is more unbelievable: that Ward and I could have something real, or that my aunt might be right about her ghost problem.
DNF at 26% in. So, remember when I was young, doe-eyed, and hopeful at the thought of finding a cozy novella to kick off Fall? Yeah, well, this wasn’t it for me.
The premise itself is a tried and true classic. Our FMC Tara runs a witchy shop but doesn’t really believe in magic herself, even after growing up around its lore. But after her shop burns down and her aunt offers her a place to stay in return for a little spirit-busting, Tara may have to rethink all her beliefs.
So while the premise had all the promise in the world, the execution was lacking. I wasn’t engaged with or endeared to either main character, Tara or the MMC Ward. And yeah, maybe I’m checking out too early to form a full judgement (hence no star rating) but both characters were too unlikeable to want to continue the journey with them.
I hated how the FMC voiced all her internal thoughts as external dialogue to no one. I definitely prefer the use of italics for inner monologue, but there also is a limitation on that because it can easily become unbalanced when you also have to consider character dialogue, descriptions, etc.
And if the MMC told the FMC to “fuck off” ONE MORE TIME (literally happened like 3 times already? Find a new line buddy).
The overall writing isn’t bad, and it’s short enough that if you wanted to give it a try it would be a quick read, but I think there’s better books for Fall out there!
This is (for me) the perfect fall/spooky novella! Just a quick read which gets you into the fall mood!
It has everything I would want in a spooky fall book! A little mystery, grumpy MMC, fake dating, haunted thingies, enemies to lovers and immaculate humor 😍 oh and yes there was spice aswell, what did I tell you? Perfect right!!
I would defenitely recommend this book and I already did in my bookclub!!
Fave quote? -> “You deserve all the sunshine and perfect fall days.” I MEAN COME ON 🥰
this was the most perfect and cute autumn novella you can ask for 🍂 this book is just perfect to get you in that autumn mood
I had everything you can ask for in a spooky autumn book: a little mystery, ghosts/spooky vibes, family history and then fake dating with grumpy/sunshine with a little bit of enemies to lovers
this was just so cute and adorable - with a bit of spice. totally perfect to get you into the autumn mood 🤎
ARC Review 5 Stars this was absolutely everything that I would want in a Halloween Romcom Novella. I almost wish it could have been longer because I adore Tara and Ward and I would have loved to spend more time with them.
Tara finds herself staying with her Aunt Tilly whose house is haunted. Aunt Tillys neighbor Ward is not the biggest fan of Tilly so when Tara moves in, he doesn't like her much either. Tara and Ward end up needing each other's help and throughout helping each other they start to put their differences aside and even start liking each other.
This novella had me laughing out loud Aunt Tilly is hilarious and a little bit crazy but in the most entertaining way. Tara and Ward do fall for each other pretty quickly but that is kind of to be expected in a novella. I really liked that this was a spooky themed romcom its perfect for the girls who would rather watch Hocus Pocus on Halloween then a horror movie. This is seriously such a fun read around Halloween, and I would highly recommend it!
Perfect to get me out of a book slump! It had ghosts Fake dating Feuding family Halloween and spooky vibes Pussy palace It was just a cute and quick read. Also loved the characters!! 🥹
“She tastes like fall, some-how. Like the promise of rain and cooler weather. Like mist curling around pine trees. Like black cats and magic. She tastes like something that could be. Something just out of reach and all I want.”
this was the most perfect halloween read!! super cute, spicy, and haunting. i honestly wish there was more to the story because i loved the characters so much.
Tara’s shop/home burned down in a fire. While she’s staring in disbelief her Aunt Tilly shows up. She offers Tara a place to stay at her house for a while. Pulling up to her aunts house she spots Ward, the hot neighbor. Aunt Tilly warns Tara that there is a ghost problem at the house. Later that night she sees the ghost for the first time, so does Ward. Tara tries explaining what they saw but Ward doesn’t believe her, at all. The next day Tara agrees to pretend to be Ward’s girlfriend while they bump into his ex. They even kiss for the first time playing along but there was an instant connection. Aunt Tilly fills in Tara and Ward about why the ghosts are haunting the house and they make it their job to put the ghosts “to rest”.
I’m so glad I got a chance to read this ARC. What a great way to get into the spooky season. I enjoyed this story and the wittiness of the characters. I read this in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down!
This is the perfect Halloween romance novella you need to read 🤭
Read this book if you like:
👻 Ghosts/ Spooky Vibe 🎃 Family History Tales 👻 Fake Dating 🎃 GrumpyxSunshine 👻 Enemies to Lovers
When Tara looses everything in fire she is forced to live with her aunt at her place, all she has to do is live in the guest house and fix the ghost problem.
See Tara is a tarot card reader, psychic, but she knows she is just good at reading people & there is no actual power in her.
The property her aunt lives in? She always wants the strip of forest which is in dispute with her neighbours Carlisle’s…
Ward is the grumpy heir of the property who is fed up with Tilly’s antiques..
But when Tara & Ward see a woman in the forest, Tara understands it’s something unnatural but Ward doesnt believe it…
Ward when sees his Ex, all he asks Tara is to act like she is his and he will go anything….
I loved the banter, the chemistry and oh the inner monologues 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Despite Tara's initial skepticism about the supernatural, her connection to tarot cards and crystals, much like my own interests, made her character sooo relatable!! 🔮 The tension explodes as her aunt wants to claim the entire forest, but her grumpy neighbor, Ward, won't give up his part. The back-and-forth between them adds a lot of drama to the story. 🦌
What amazed me was the depth of the plot in such a short book (it only has 155 pages!). I could tell that the author truly knows about tarot cards, which added an authentic touch to the story. 🧚✨
The cute story elements, like pretending to date, the contrast of a grumpy character with a (very) cheerful one, and the shift from enemies to lovers, made it my fav fall read ever!!📚
🎃 “you deserve all the sunshine and perfect fall days” 🎃
The writing style just wasn’t for me. I finished it because it was a quick read, but otherwise I’m not sure I would have.
The pacing was really fast and the storyline definitely fit that. I felt like I had whiplash going from her moving in with her quirky aunt, the really rude neighbor, the spooky things happening, the festival, the ex, the fake dating, then falling in love in what felt like 3 days???
The premise sounded interesting and I kind of wish the spooky storyline was fleshed out more. Overall I just didn’t buy into the characters and thought everything was really rushed.
✨️ 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒔/𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔: 🔮 Enemies sorta to friends to lovers 🔮 Fake dating 🔮 Mild spooks, ghosts & hauntings 🔮 Ancient family history 🔮 Some spice 🌶 🔮 Kinda opposites attract he's a grump she's a sunshine 🔮 Set during October 🔮 Small town

I truly enjoyed this book so much so that I would love to maybe read more from this author! The cover = super cute The writing & style = amazing! The characters were fun and well written.
It made the perfect read to end off October with becoz it had the right amount of romance, comedy, drama and spooks. An enjoyable read for sure! Quick and easy to get into. I also liked that it was novella length. Definitely a must read esp in October! Glad I ended off my Halloween with this one so maybe next time you should too 😉
p.s. One thing I disliked: SPOILER ALERT ⚠️ • • • • •
them getting abruptly married for the ghosts sake while we didn't get much of their relationship together as a couple was silly becoz I would have liked them to have built or shown more of their couple sides be4 the author introduced this plot of them needing to get hitched for the ghosts to find peace.
I understand the quick wedding and all that but just should've build some of that relationship fluff then brought in that aspect.
This was so cute! It’s a very quick short read so I’m not surprised that things move along fast. Just go into it knowing that it’s not really a slow burn and things move along very quickly!
Read this if you love: 👍🏻Spooky, paranormal themes 👍🏻Funny, bold, quirky FMC with no filter 👍🏻Broody, dirty talking MMC that’s actually a cinnamon roll for the FMC 👍🏻Grumpy x sunshine 👍🏻Hilarious banter 👍🏻Cooky, crazy aunts with monster dildo collections 👍🏻Autumn feels 👍🏻Fake dating 👍🏻fast love
I love the MCs in this book! Tara is hilarious! She is bold, has no filter, and has such a vibrant personality. Ward is so grumpy and broody in the beginning but then he starts opening up around Tara and he’s also got a great sense of humor and totally a cinnamon roll. He’s confident in his looks & in the sheets 🥵
Aunt Tilly is one of my fave parts of this book! She is probably my most fave side character ever! She’s so off the wall and hilarious. But you can tell she loves Tara like her own daughter.
There is definitely sexual tension and lots of innuendoes leading up to the spicy scene. I love that they don’t waste time beating around the bush, they both know what they want, and decide to go with it. The chemistry between these two characters is great and I know if it were longer I would’ve loved it even more!
My only complaints are that it was so short. I want more of Tara and Ward! More of their laughs, easy convos, and acceptance of each others quirks. This book wraps up fast and gives the impression that they solved the issue but I do wish we got more answers as to Aunt Tilly’s house and more info about the ghosts. This feels like a novella? The pace, the quick solution, the quick love. It leaves me wanting to know what happens with them next?! Does she open a new shop? What about aunt Tilly??
But, this is great for a cute, funny, spooky read!
this spooky, fake-dating, enemies to lovers, rom-com novella was SO cute. i LOVED it so much! this was literally so perfect to get me into the fall mood and mindset🎃
though this book is short, it never felt rushed. it felt like it flowed well and was well-paced. and though the story was short, you still get to know the characters, and they were still interesting, and I really loved them; which is so important for me in a story!✨️
this is truly a perfect quick ghostie read to get you into the spooky season spirit! 👻
do yourself a favor and add this book to your spooky/fall tbr, grab a snack, a tasty drink, and cozy up with this novella on a crisp fall day and enjoy!🔮
This book will be available for purchase and on KU September 28th. I'd like to thank the author Brittany Kelley for this ARC and for writing this silly, spooky, and spicy Halloween romcom.
I ATE THIS UP! 🎃 It was a quick stand alone novella, although if you've read Happily Haunted After the couple from that book does appear throughout this book. A Ghost of a Chance had me laughing constantly, Aunt Tilly is such a character! 😂 Tara the FMC is so cute and I love her so much and Ward is the hot grump next door (he gives August from Beach Read vibes). The banter and tension is everything in this book and yes there is some spice.🌶️ In addition to all that, the house has unusual spooky (and sometimes hilarious) occurrences. There is a mystery to be solved and how else can Tara get August to help other than by agreeing to fake dating him all the way to Halloween. 😏
Here are a few other random things I loved about this book: Tara's first date fit, the way Ward describes their first real kiss, the pussy palace (read it and you'll understand 😂) , and the fact that the author called this a bite sized Halloween romcom.
this was sooo cute. it was the perfect halloween romcom novella and the spooky, fall, cozy vibes were amazing.
the banter and overall relationship between ward and tara was so adorable. i loved watching the progression of both of their feelings as they realized that fake dating was becoming much more real than they expected.
the spooky vibes were super great and i loved the plot about the ghosts. it was a perfect fall novella.
the only thing is i wish it was longer! there were some things i wish were touched on more or elaborated on, but overall i really enjoyed it and i highly recommend it!!
Cute lil novella with witchy vibes for fall!! Needed to be longer to be good though 😂 the idea for the romance was good but everything had to happen too fast. I’m happy I was able to finish something though
Okay so this is exactly what I’ve been craving to help get myself into spooky season! We have all these cozy Christmas books & movies- why can’t we have Halloween ones as well?! Easy read, nice little spicy spice scene in there, enemies to lovers, bothersome ghosties, quirky family, the only thing missing was an adorable kitty or dog! I received this ARC from the author to read and review with my unbiased opinion. Thank you!
this was super cute and i really loved the spooky side story. i don’t think short stories are for me though because they are so fast paced and unrealistic. i so wish this was a full book!
Okay I’m very conflicted about this because I LOVED it!
This had the potential to be a 5 star read. I enjoyed SO many parts of this story, and the plot really drew me in! I thought the characters were great but for me it would have been better as a full length novel rather than a novella, because I feel like so much stuff was left out of the story and it was very rushed.
A fun and spicy fake dating, grumpy x sunshine neighbor paranormal romance that was worth the wait to listen on audio! Perfect spooky season romance reading material and a quick read with a cute purple cover!
'De alguna manera sabe a otoño. Como la promesa de lluvia y un clima más fresco. Como niebla que se enrosca alrededor de los pinos. Como gatos negros y magia. Sabe a algo que podría ser. Algo que está fuera de mi alcance y todo lo que quiero.'

A Ghost of a Chance de Brittany Kelley
Argumento:
Me quedaron preguntas... Tilly y Ward lograron al fin hacer las paces? Logró Tara utilizar su don? La verdad necesité más páginas!
A pesar de no ser un libro largo, me la pasé bien leyéndolo y cumple para a temática de Halloween que es lo que estaba buscando.
**ARC REVIEW** A Ghost of A Chance is a standalone Halloween book by Brittany Kelley. This was my first Halloween book and it was the perfect October read to get into the spooky season.
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars Spice: 🔥
If you like these tropes, you will enjoy reading this book :) 👻 Romantic Comedy 👻 Halloween Vibes 👻 Enemies to Lovers 👻 Fake Dating 👻 Spooky Mystery
This book was SOOOOO FUNNY!!!!! Like I don't think I stopped smiling or laughing the entire book. The monster dildo collection - I CAN'T and who names the guest house the Pu**y Palace. AUNT TILLY that's who. The things Aunt Tilly said I couldn't stop laughing
I love that this book had some of my favourite tropes like enemies to lovers and fake dating.
Tara moves in with her aunt after her shop and home burn down. She doesn't expect to face the moody grumpy next door neighbor, Ward Carlisle. They do not get on at the start. He is more annoyed with Aunt Tilly and her rowdy antics that has meant that he hasn't managed to get much sleep.
However, they decide to put their differences aside and fake date each other till Halloween when his ex shows up to town with her husband. Tara agrees as long as he helps her with a ghost situation they have around the land they both live on.
I loved the witty banter between Ward and Tara and I loved that as soon as he met Tara it felt like he could finally be himself.
I loved the spooky mystery and finding our more about it!
Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I can't wait to read whatever is next from Brittany!!!
Thanks Brittany for kindly sending me this arc to read and review. This review is my own honest opinion on the book :)
“You deserve all the sunshine and perfect fall days,”
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice:🌶️🌶️
If you are looking for a book that is going to get you right into the fall/Halloween spirit then don’t hesitate to pick up this amazing novella by Brittany Kelley!! Because it is the perfect amount of fake dating, insta-lust to love romance, with incredible banter, spice that will heat up your kinda and just the right amount paranormal to keep the pages turning!!
I loved the plot of this story… I mean that’s a given as so far I haven’t met a Brittany Kelley story I didn’t like, but man oh man was I enamored from page one of this novella! Tara is our witchy FMC, who is down on her luck and just needs a bit of a reset in life to get her back on her feet again… which comes in the form of her Aunt Tilly offering her a place to stay. But thankfully for Tara her Aunts next door neighbor Ward is an easy on the eyes distraction. Ward is our grumpy, no nonsense, alphahole MMC who has some mixed feelings on his new neighbor. He immediately finds her attractive but he’s been in a back and forth annoyance war with her aunt since the day he moved in. Unfortunately for them both the past as well as the strange and unusual have different plans for our characters though and continue to create situations that force them together. These situations lead to so many romantic instances that you’ll be wishing for your own spooky fall romance!! I really don’t want to spoil anything for y’all so I’ll just say this is a must read!!
