Cass doesn’t know exactly why he can’t get over his massive, hopeless crush on his roommate. It might have something to do with how gorgeous and sweet and completely out of his league Blake is, but who can really say?
Blake doesn’t know exactly why he’s so protective of his roommate. It could have something to do with how adorable and earnest and easy to be around Cass is, but who can say for sure?
But when the first night of their Spring Break road trip leads Cass to an encounter with someone otherworldly, and he wakes up with two cravings—blood and Blake—the two will have to reconcile their feelings for each other once and for all.
Grae Bryan has been reading romance since she was far too young to know any better. Her love for love stories spans all genres, and while her current series is of the paranormal variety, she knows she’ll be exploring other worlds further down the line.
She lives in Arizona with her husband, who graciously shares space with all the imaginary men in her head. When not writing, she can generally be found reading more than is healthy, walking her monster-dog, or cuddling her demon-cat. She loves anything and everything gothic, strange, lovely, or cozy.
Cassian is a short friends-to-lovers novella following Cass and Blake. Two best friends who's world is shifted after learning about the existence of vampires when Cass is turned. And they were roommates.
Cass has always had feelings for his straight best friend, but knows nothing will come of it. But after he gets turned into a vampire against his will, his attraction to Blake is even more potent.
Left by the stranger who turned him, Cass doesn't have to deal with it by himself as Blake is there to help.
On top of learning vampires exist and his best friend is now one, Blake is beginning to realise his feelings for Cass aren't as platonic as he thought. __ Cassian is a nice entry to the series. It's low stakes and a quick read. Danny from Roman makes a quick appearance. I don't think we'll see Cass and Blake in the main series, but hopefully we do as there's certainly more to their story that isn't told here.
Vampire's Mate Series
Book 1: Roman - 4 Stars Book 2: Soren - 4 Stars Book 3: Lucien - 5 Stars Book 4: Johann 4 Stars Book 5: Wolfgang 4 Stars Book 5.5: Cassian 4.5 Stars Book 6: Colin 4 Stars
I think this is my favourite in the series so far, even though it was a really short story! First time I didn't picture or hear the inner demon as Gollum too 😂
I absolutely loved himbo Blake, and baby vampire Cass and the easy acceptance of everything. The cameo from Danny was great too.
I'm so intrigued by the fact they're moving to Phoenix because I have been waiting for the red headed twins to get a book for ages, so I'm hoping that's coming soon!
I had this one already from the giveaway but it's well worth reading again.
Grae manages to pack a lot into this novella, including enough world building that you get a good idea even if you've not read more of her vampire series.
Cassian is almost as cute as Jaybird and I love how Blake realises he's always had a thing for him from the start of their friendship.
2.5 rounded up. I like the dynamic of roommates to lovers, but with it being suuuuper short, I didn't feel as invested and it just had me itching for book 6 tbh. Still gave some nice vibes though and there was a nice cameo!!
Ha, easier said than done, my friend! Especially when the majority of this quick fix was pretty much simply that. 🫵🏻🤦🏻♀️ I feel like I have been fairly lenient of my enjoyment of this series, but I think I'm going to have to give Cassian a hard pass of my forgiveness meter. It's not like there was anything remotely different to the writing style or to the premise, or to the conclusion, or even to the characters. It's just that I can't quite figure out what exactly was the reason to write this, let alone why that has me struggling to, well, like it.
I'm a sucker for friends to lovers, and what propels that faster than a thirst for your roommate who've you been pining for from afar, who's more than eager, if not willing to help you out with your sudden lustful cravings. 🙂↕️ It's just the sheer fast-speed in which it tumbled into spilling out endearments, to the casual acceptance, to Maybe-Arthur having the gall to turn Cass simply because he was lamenting his sorrows to him over Blake's straightness, thus making him officially off the market that had me spinning circles at it. 🥴
“I’m like that with you,” Blake went on, his voice deepening with each word. “Because of how I feel about you.”
I wasn't feeling their connection, nor even remotely any believable, if not convincing intimacy of desire between Blake and Cassian. Everything was much too easy, even their confrontation with Maybe-Arthur (honestly, I don't blame Cassian for not remembering - his name was really only mentioned once! 😅), was brushed along. Honestly, I'm just at a loss of what purpose this existed for. That a pair can be together without turning entirely? A cute interlude to the more angsty and bloody trysts that have befallen Danny and co.? A simple and swift, sweet and steamy short story of confessions and bloodlust - literally! 🧛🏻
If so, then sure, why not? There really was nothing really wrong with the pair of fated mates. Cassian was a sweetheart, there was a dash of humor and smexy feels, Blake was a ever-loving understanding bro, who was more than happy to sate his friend's sudden craving and soothe the feral beast of temptation. 'I’ve got your back. Always.' 🥺 It was breezy, it was easy, dare I say, cheesy? Hmmm, no, I guess not, just something that I couldn't bring myself to enjoy, maybe because it lacked purpose and not enough of a pull for me to grow attached to the story, itself. 😞
It’s been a while since I’ve read books from this series, but it wasn’t hard at all to re-acquaint myself with it, especially as Cassian isn’t part of the entire Hyde Park-vampire family: he and his roommate Blake are just passing through, and Cass gets turned when he’s out one night, sad because he’s got an unrequited crush on Blake.
The vampire who turns him on a whim leaves town, so they’re more or less left to their own devices.
“Don’t look at me like that, baby. You just drank my blood like a fucking milkshake. We need to talk.”
It’s free of drama, sweet, easy to follow, and surprisingly hot. The only thing that’s keeping me from rounding my 4.5 stars up is the term “V-card”, which admittedly is a pet peeve of mine 😂 just say it, and don’t talk around it. I mean…
“You still trying to lose your V card this weekend, baby?”
If you can’t say it, you’re not ready to do i, it’s as simple as that 🤷♀️
Should come as no surprise this little novella was perfect. This whole mates series has cr^ck or something sprinkled into it I swear to gods, because it’s addicting.
68 pages of cuteness, an adorably confused baby vamp, and his big loyal golden retriever puppy roommate lover. Again, PERFECTION.
!! I don't equate fiction stories to real life. It's a matter of personal taste and what you are willing or want to tolerate in the books you read. We all have different opinions and preferences when it comes to the kind of books we enjoy, so it's important to respect and remember that it's just a book!!
This was a short, sweet addition to the Vampire Mates series that encompasses almost everything I adore about this series. The characters and their romance are precious and filled with the sweet neediness I love. Since this was a novella, there wasn’t much in the way of drama or angst, but that’s okay, because it was a simple feel-good story. Danny, from the main series, makes an appearance too, and it was nice to see the connections.
3.5 stars This would have been so much better if it was a bit longer. Blake and Cass were sweet together and did have a loving connection. Blake was all himbo-y and Cass was all nerdy and shy.
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: mention of homophobia, involuntary vampire transformation, blood
This one was neat. Kind of related but adjacent enough that it could be read at any point of the series without it really affecting the story. I liked it, it was sweet
I'm a big fan of this series in general but somehow I missed reading this before. Did this shorty blow my mind? Not really but I still enjoyed coming back to the vampire mates world (I couldn't remember what rouge vamp was responsible for turning our sweet Mc or if this was mentioned in any of the other books but there is another cameo and that was super sweet)
Cutie cute best friends to lovers where one of them becomes a vampire and doesn’t know what tf to do about it? Delightful. The newly turned vamp and his roommate figuring out what to do together and falling in love while doing it? A banger. Grae Bryan has earned an auto buy one click from me because I love these MM vampire romances she’s putting out. This one was sweet, a little spicy, with bi-awakening between two college roommates turned besties. I loved it. The check in with Danny was so nice (I miss him). VERY interested to see if the vamp that turned Cass makes another appearance (please give him a book Grae).
This was a quick, short read that brings us back to Hyde Park, home of many vampires though only one cameo from the core group. The friends to lovers/roommates tropes were cute and it was sweet how quickly Blake was ready to do whatever he could to make Cassian comfortable with his new transition to being a vampire. It was a bit too short for me to really form any real connection with either characters, but it was still an enjoyable read.
Rating: 4 stars (8/10) Spice: 🌶️🌶️ Tropes: F2L, roommates, fated mates, double turning, nerd x jock, bi-awakening Review: This was so cute and sweet and (almost) everything I wanted from this story. Cassian is a sweet, nerdy, gay college kid who rooms with Blake, a big, kind-hearted, himbo of a man, and who Cass is hardcore crushing on. While they road trip, Cass finds himself in a situation that changes his life for good, and now Blake and Cass navigate new changes and revelations. I have to say, I loved both of these two so much - they are so touchy and cuddly and kind and sweet and I just adored watching Blake come to realise his buried feelings for Cass, and also watch Cass try to not lose himself to his vamp when around Blake. It was great to see Danny again in this, and I loved them exploring Cass's new vamp powers, as well as their new relationship. I really appreciated the gesture Blake made in the epilogue, but I was so salty that we never got to see him turn, or to hear his inner thoughts as he comes face to face with him mate once he's a vampire. I was so ready for the crazy possessive and adoring feelings I'm sure his vamp would have, and I feel kind of cheated out of it. This novella could've easily, easily been another 50 pages long, and I think that would have been the perfect length to spend just a little more time exploring first Cass's transition, and then eventually Blake's. But other than that, I really enjoyed this, and am excited for the last book in the series to come out soon.
Cassian is in love with his straight roommate and goes to a bar to drown his sorrows and maybe hook up with someone to help him move on.. he gets turned instead and when he wakes up all he can think about is blood, I mean Blake.
Grae packs a lot into this short story including a fun cameo of everyone’s favourite vampire nurse Danny! I loved every minute with these guys.
A quick read that doesn't deviate from this series' formulaic plot except that both of these MCs are from outside of town and neither are vampires when they arrived. Two college friends/roommates on their way home to Phoenix make a stop in Hyde Park, CO (where the majority of the series takes place). Cassian goes home with the wrong guy and ends up being turned. His maker leaves the next day after finding out that it's already claimed territory. Luckily for Cass, his friend/roomie/crush Blake is also his fated mate and then the rest of this story is just like the others. It's remarkable that Blake also just happens to be into Cassian and they've just been circling each other. It took the vampire abilities to bring them together. Also luckily they were in a town with two vampire medical professionals and Danny was on duty that night and was the nurse assigned... you really have to be into fate for this series.
3 stars for characters and spice, but the same story line over and over is getting old for me.
This was a super cute read. I would have gladly read them for a whole book and getting to see Danny was fun. Hoping Cass and Blake show up in the next book!
