Lord Robert, Norman ruler of the most north-easterly region of England, spares the life of Emma, the pregnant widow of an Anglo-Saxon rebel. When his wife dies in childbirth, he asks Emma to become nurse to his own child at Danburgh Castle.
On arrival at the castle, Emma discovers that the widowed Lord Robert is already promised to Fiona, the daughter of a Scottish thane. This arrangement does not, however, prevent Lord Robert from making advances towards his nurse. Emma resists Lord Robert’s attentions, but finds she is increasingly having to deny her own desires in order to do so. Lady Fiona, suspicious of Robert’s affection for Emma, tries to dismiss her from his service, but when he objects to this, she stipulates that Emma can remain at Danburgh only if she agrees to her terms and conditions: Emma must be guarded like a prisoner.
Should Emma choose freedom, forsaking Lord Robert, or is it worth risking her fate at the hands of Lady Fiona in order to remain in Danburgh Castle?

I'd like to say a big thank you to the many readers and reviewers at Goodreads, who have taken time and care over reading, rating, reviewing and recommending my fiction. I really value feedback from readers so, if you have any comments to make on my books, please let me know.
A wonderful medieval short story. I really enjoyed this short read. Very well written and kept my attention the whole way through. I had been wanting to read some her work and this was a great way for me to do so.
I liked this one more than I thought I would, considering its short length. Regardless, the length really doesn't matter as long as I get a more than satisfactory ending. It was a pleasant enough read for me.
Emma has just lost her husband. Newly married and pregnant, she now finds her self destitute and back living with her family. But rescue comes in the form of Lord Robert, a new widower himself, who hires her to be a wet nurse for his son.
This story was not what I was expecting. For one thing it was incredibly short. It also lacked depth. This might be, in part, due to the lack of length in the story. I enjoyed the story, but it felt hurried. There was so much that could have been done with this plot and instead it was rushed and cheapened. The ending especially felt very rushed and poorly done.
I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.
