A story carried by song, memory, and the hope of second chances.
London, Soho, 1983. Charlie, a Greek restaurateur, falls for Brenda, a Jamaican blues singer with a voice that stops time. Their intense affair ends abruptly when Brenda disappears without a word. What Charlie doesn’t know is that she’s carrying a secret that will echo for decades.
London, 2020. Charlie is fading into memory, his mind clouded by dementia. In the neighbourhood Brenda once called home, new friendships form and lives begin to intertwine, long-held secrets unravel, and the past finds its way into the present.
Spanning decades and generations, Lovers is a tender, multi-layered novel about music, memory, and the invisible threads that bind us — a story of heartbreak, hope, and the chance to begin again.

This is the first book I have read by this author.
This novel consists of a 46 chapters. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
'Lovers' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Fran discusses/includes domestic violence.
I adored this unique storyline which is hard to come by when it comes to books as there are so many out there but Fran has created an absolutely beautiful storyline!!!! It is the perfect book to read snuggled up on the sofa with a blanket while you get stuck in to the lives of 5 strangers. With its character driven storyline I became completely invested in them as well as the storyline itself, I'll talk more about the characters shortly. Fran's fantastic writing skills makes this book an easy to read, emotive and smooth read that I completely lost myself in. It is both heartwarming and heartbreaking and one minute I was laughing until tears streamed down my eyes and the other I was crying. It is ram packed with friendship, fate, kindness, hope and so much more! It is not only filled with multiple protagonists but also multiple timelines moving from 1983 to 2022. I was completely invested in this book from the very first page and just could not put it down and ended up devouring it in one sitting!! Fran's evocative writing skills really do bring the locations, emotions and the characters to life!! I absolutely LOVED the realism of this storyline which made it so easy to picture everything that was going on. I am looking forward to reading more of Fran's books.
Well done Fran on a beautiful book!!! This may be the first book I have read by her but I cannot wait to get hold of more books by this talented author!!!
The characters were all an eclectic mix and each one of them were realistic and strong. I was completely invested in them all. It also makes them more realistic, believable and made me feel even more for them than I normally would. They each had their own unique personalities with positive and negative behaviours. We get to meet Ione, Marta, Elliot, Charlie and Louise and see their lives through their eyes with Fran's multiple character protagonists. I love it when there are several protagonists as we get to see a much bigger picture as well as seeing how they are each feeling as individuals. During this book it was intriguing to see how each of their lives intertwined and connected through different events and reasons until the 5 strangers are no longer strangers but more. I loved each of them for different reasons, they were all very likeable and honest characters which makes all the difference to how much I enjoy a book. Fran's evocative writing skills makes each of them leap from the page and their emotions became mine so make sure you have the tissues at the ready before delving into this book!!! I loved learning about them as individuals as well as seeing their interactions with each other and seeing their friendships and relationships change and develop throughout. There were just so many amazing characters that I loved getting to know that I could write about them all day but I don't want to bore you so I'll start to wrap it up here. Each of the characters are memorable and unique in their own ways and they are a group that I wont be forgetting any time soon!
Overall a beautiful book filled with emotions, second chances and so much more!!!

I have just finished reading Lovers and what a beautiful story it has been!!! All characters were introduced in a beautiful written way, many at a major change in their life. A crossroad they had just passed you could say and now had to go forward from there. Bit by bit the characters become intertwined and in such a soft way full of beauty. Each character on its own has bagage but is described in a way that you just wouldn't want to change a thing! The words they speak and thoughts they have make you become part of their lives, just as you would be one of the many lovely characters. I can't even say who my favourite characters would be, as they are all in their own way beautiful. It is a story that nicely developed itself and showed us love, kindness, sadness, friendship, hope between these people around Shepherds Bush. I think I will go to bed this evening and hopefully dream of this story.
Brenda is a singer in a blues band in Soho, 1983. When Charlie sees her perform, he is smitten and before long they're a couple in love. Travel through time to 2022 and five West London girls become acquainted seeking friendship and companionship without knowing anything about the past. Sometimes, however, the past comes back to bite you, especially when you're not expecting it.
Having read this author's work before, I knew this would be very readable but, oh, it is so much more. She has created such fabulous characters and weaves the most wonderful tales making this a very hard book to put down. I relished each and every story and admired the smart way they were interwoven. Beautifully written, this is an absolutely gorgeous read and one I'm very happy to recommend and give all five sparkling stars. Definitely an author to look out for!
WOW! What a lovely but sad story that rocked me to my core from the beginning to the very last word. First book by Fran Clark but it certainly won't be my last. 5 strangers come together and their stories are aligned with one another through fate. This book will stay with me for a long time because it was that special and worthwhile. I give it 5 stars but I'd would give it 5 million stars! Run don't walk to get this book! Thank you to Zooloo's Book Tours and Fran Clark for the opportunity to read and review such a beautiful, heartrending story. I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful story.
This book drew me in from the first page. The deeper I progressed, the more I become invested in the characters and the connections between them. Fran has created not only a heartwarming and at times, heartbreaking story but characters that you can’t help but get attached to and just want to be okay by the end.
Also thank you for having a character named Louise who also hates being called Lou! I felt so seen in that moment!
This was such a beautiful story. It follows 5 strangers who end up connecting and are brought together by fate and coincidences. It is set in West London which I loved as I am originally from there and so I could picture the locations mentioned.
I like stories like this where the characters become connected. A great read.
What a beautiful, intricate and heartbreaking read!
The relationships in this made me think of Love Actually because each of the characters seem to have a link to each other in some way. There were many things I did not expect that came up and were written brilliantly.
I felt every emotion with the characters and cared about each and every one. I could have read much, much more of this story and these characters and these relationships.
I want to really, truly thank @franclarkauthor for the copy of the book. I can not wait to read more from this author!!
Can you be in love with a book? I've just found out it's possible! Today is publication day for this beauty and, while I want to shout about it from the rooftops, I also want to keep it all to myself!
In Lovers we find a fantastic cast of characters whose lives become increasingly entwined in such an effortless manner that you'll think the book wrote itself! Each character has also such a distinctive voice and fully-developed personality that, weeks after leaving their fictional corner of Shepherd.s Bush, I struggle to remember they are not real people.
And the story? Oh, the story! Love, friendship, hope, heartbreak, and again more love, friendship and hope. This is a book that hugs you and doesn't let go.
I have to admit to being initially drawn to this book because the front cover looked perfect for the autumn season. The gorgeous rich colours and the connection to nature really stood out for me.
I hadn't expected this to be such a wonderful read as well! Absolutely perfect for grabbing a hot drink, getting cosy and settling in for a day under a blanket and immersing yourself in this book.
We follow the lives of 5 strangers living in London who over time are brought together and end up connecting, bringing their stories together.
I adored every single character. Fran manages to write such lovable, relatable and honest characters - I really connected with them all in different ways and thought how wonderful it would have been to be part of their story.
I loved that we, at first, are reading 5 different stories that weave around each other and seem to be unconnected. Slowly, situations create opportunities for characters to come together and support each other and as the storylines mingle, they grow together.
The writing flows perfectly and I was so invested in each story that I couldn't put this down. I had to know the outcome for each. There were weet moments and parts that had me smiling so much - but be sure to get the tissues ready too.
A lovely weekend read - am keen to see what else there is on offer from this author.
Brenda and Charlie are in a club in Soho, London when they first meet in the 1980s, but Charlie is married. This story is filled with emotions, five stranger has a story of their own. Slowly they begin to come together and become one. We share the good and the bad, which will have you smiling but also reaching for a tissue. Fran has wrote this beautiful story that feels so real, that you become part of their story
Thank you so much to the wonderful Zoe of Zooloo's Book Tours for the invite to read and review, 'Lovers' by Fran Clark, my first novel by her and definitely not the last. I am genuinely so excited by the idea she has a 4 books series coming out next year, that is going to be something to look forward to!
I was entranced by the gorgeous cover which totally reflects this time of year, and then plunging in to the first person narration puts you in the mindset of a woman who has been through loss, trauma, and is still picking herself back up to do something incredibly brave- moving to London to reset her life.
Ione kicks off the narrative , her first person perspective puts you inside the character and brings a sense of immediacy that pulls you into her story. There is also Marta, a Polish woman, Elliott, a widower and single parent, Charlie, a divorcee who has been left isolated and alone following a bitter divorce, and Lou (not Louise!) who is a carer.
Through music and the most wonderful happenstance that joins people together when they most need to connect, all of these individuals who are bruised and battered, connect through the tiny interactions that make up daily life. Their receptiveness to being friends, lovers, and companions through the journey of life in Shepherd's Bush is a journey you are happy to take with them, urging them on through their individual chapters where you see life from their perspective, through to how each of the others perceives them
So you have this fully rounded, beautifully realised experience of those who have been traumatised by lost, fake or violent love , to redeem their hearts and try again. As the time slips between now, and the 1980's , a connection, once forged, because impossible to ignore as the commonality of love in spite of everything these people have been through, makes what are considered by society as 'outsiders' and therefore 'unworthy', brings the greatest gift of all-love.
I could not stop reading, this is the perfect book to just pick you up and sweep you away and gives you, the reader, hope and a feeling of satisfaction when you close the last page.
Beautifully and emotively written as the words paint a compelling picture of life and love.
Lovers is beautifully written and pulls you deeply in. Even the description of rain is emotive. Ione is who you meet at first. She has lost someone dear to her and it pulls, hard, at your heartstrings. If you read this book and ever know how that feels and to have the ashes in your possession, you'll feel it, as Ione does, in every fibre of her body, but especially the heart. It is also emotional because there is abuse, that is written starkly.
There is Marta, a Polish woman, who meets Elliott, a 42 year old with a teenage daughter, in a music shop, selling instruments. His eyes are emotive and makes you wonder what he's thinking when he has not got a customer in the shop. The writing reminds me of a painting I like that used to hang in the National Gallery in Scotland. I would look at it often and wonder what the lady was thinking as she was being painted. It all has the same effect of drawing on the curious mind.
Marta is funny in a way. She is very matter-of-fact when it comes to Elliott's shop.
There's Charlie, who likes Motown and sadly has something lifechanging happen to him.
Together, these characters portray a sensual and compelling look at life and love, whether it is through landscape or relationships between lovers or family, sometimes with an air of joy and other times, with an air of melancholy.
Lovers is a book to read and get fully immersed with the characters lives.
Lovers is a story that captivates from page one. It follows the lives of five people who initially are strangers. However, coincidence and fate bring them together subtly and beautifully in this book. Fran Clark cleverly interweaves these lives together in a touching and moving story that'll have the reader reaching for the tissues and feeling every wave of emotion along with these characters. Each character jumps from the page as a real person. I became so immersed in this book that there were many moments when I forgot that these characters weren't real! They're all a figment of Fran Clark's amazing imagination and huge talent for creating stories. Lovers is a book where there are a number of storylines which ultimately become one. A genius of a book and one which even a person with the coldest heart would warm to and empathise with. Not once was there a moment when I was tempted to skip a paragraph or two. On the contrary, I needed to know what happened to the characters, and how their stories progressed - why? Because I cared for each and every character. Their stories captivated me. I'm not a fan of romantic fiction. Usually, I'm drawn to mystery, supernatural, historical or crime fiction, but Lovers has changed all that.
This is a really beautiful story that follows the lives of 5 strangers who are brought together and eventually end up connecting through a series of coincidences and the hands of fate.
The book is beautifully written with a warm and moving story line and well developed characters that I came to be really invested in. They were all so real and relatable and felt like they could literally step off of the page, I'll be honest, I was actually disappointed they didn't because I wanted to be part of this story so bad.
This book had me laughing and reaching for tissues and is safe to say it will be with me for a while. I love books where you have separate stories and then through the events of the book, the stories all become inter mingled and almost as one. This is one of the best books I have read this year.
I am always a fan of either enemies to lovers or strangers to lovers and this book absolutely fits the bill to a T. We are given to complete strangers, who meet on the of chance, on a fun night. It progresses and and becomes a tale of intertwined lives, travelling forward, as the people find their way through life in a busy town. The author gives us a journey that is beautiful and very intriguing. You get to see them through ever moment and every challenge. We saw all the tender moments and any times of heartache. It was written so well and flowed nicely, making the story feel very realistic.
Thank you @zooloosBT for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. The front cover of Lovers is gorgeous. Lovers is a contemporary genre . The story is beautifully written and is about Charlie and Five strangers. The Lovers is a heartfelt read, and I love that it is about fate. I belive in fate alot so i like that this book talks about this about meeting the right personal the right time. I found the story to be moving, and I liked the characters and it was good to see them develop through the book. Fantastic read. 5 stars
At first I found the story a little slow and wasn't too sure about some of the characters but as I got into the story and each character developed I became engrossed in the end. I enjoyed it very much.
