When Hugo and Neve settle in Paris, they assume that they will enjoy a few peaceful years away from the turmoil of British politics, but they are not nearly as safe as they believe themselves to be, especially since everyone has something to hide.
Meanwhile, Max must learn to adapt to life on a sugar plantation in Barbados, and decide whether to accept help from an unexpected and dangerous source; a decision which may cost him his life.
To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.
Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

This entire series (Wonderland) is epic. So many richly defined characters that span years of time. Fans of Outlander will love these novels in the Wonderland series. These are hidden gems. Listening to the series narrated by Eva Kaminsky who is a fantastic voice actor.
This series is so good. I can't seem to put them down. I got book one free. I downloaded because it was a time travel book and I had just finished the book "The Lovers" also by Miss Shapiro. I have been reading constantly. I will star book 4 today. I must know what happens next!
This book is filled with of suspense, love murder and lots of action! The author describes each character and the scenery that I can actually see them . Great story line too!! So on to the next one in the series!!!
I’m not finished yet but I’m trying to finish it. This has the same problems as the other books, but perhaps I was in a better mood then because I’m on the verge of sending it back to the library without finishing.
Still the characters motivations don’t make sense. It’s like the author is trying to demonstrate her historical knowledge by squeezing in as many scenarios as possible, but trying to keep the drama up by making the characters all incredibly stupid.
Spoiler: Max in the last book goes back to the past to do something stupid but he gets transported as an indentured servant to Barbados. He’s there for 6 months just to show that the author knows things about life on Caribbean plantations. Then a slave.. likes him? So helps him escape? And he’s back off to Europe. Instead of booking it straight to the chapel so he can get back to the present, he decides it’s a better idea to go to France to find Hugo and mess his life up. Stupid. So stupid.
I like that the book has more points of view, but it doesn’t really help if everyone is an idiot.
I don’t like that Frances’s relationships are such a big story line. It feels, again, like the author is trying to prove her historical knowledge by having the 15 year old get married. But doesn’t make it any less stupid as a contemporary reader. The way it was a side plot in the last book was good enough to show some of the times. She honestly could have stayed at the convent and saved us all from the 30-something year old we are supposed to like as a character being so enamored with a teen.
I’m 37% of the way in, and I think the only reason I haven’t stopped yet is because I don’t have anything else to read today. If I continue (and if my opinion changes) I’ll update the review. For now I’m annoyed at almost everything in the story.
Edit: I ended up finishing it. But it has set up the next book already to be stupid. So. I think I’m still done here
I've read many novels with flashbacks. This was the first one I've read with flash forwards to the current time from the setting in the 1600s, with hints about what life might have been like if several of the main characters had stayed in modern England. It was a fascinating story about the tensions between Protestant and Catholic countries not long after the Reformation changed the religious landscape throughout Europe. There were life-threatening dangers for affiliating with the wrong tradition in either Protestant England or Catholic France. Though I struggled in a few places to keep track of who who among the lesser characters, I came to greatly appreciate the main ones. I loved Archie. I enjoyed the glimpse into court life in Paris and the descriptions of everyday life for those who were closer to the top of the society. I grieved for the suffering of those working the sugar cane fields in Barbados. I was fascinated with the ingenuity of those who had to respond to medical emergencies with none of the modern options we tend to take for granted. If you like historical fiction, I think you'll like this one.
Love this series, couldn't wait to read this latest book and now I've finished it....all I can say is WOW...sure didn't disappoint .....didn't want it to end.......I will miss all the characters until summer and book four.........this author has a wonderful, easy to read style......
Personally, I lost interest in the characters half way through the book. I was more interested in Max story while he was exiled to Barbados, but his time on the island was too short. I was over Hugo and Neve's storyline. The story just goes on and on and then drags into another series book. Probably will not read the next series book.
I am really enjoying this series. It gives me my fix for time travel. In this one the author alternates from Neve's point of view, Max and Frances. I had a couple of moments while I was reading this where I really think Neve is dumb to stay in the 1600s but I understand that she is staying for Hugo. Overall there was a lot of action and I am looking forward to the next one.
I've read several books by this author and enjoy this series and it's characters . I'm glad she's continuing with it . The characters are likable and interesting and the plot keeps me interested . Looking forward to summer.
Full of adventure and excitement. Poor Max though I felt kinda of bad for him. This entire series is just fantastic. I can't wait for the next book to come out.
I loved this third installment of Neve and Hugo’s time traveling historical romance with a side of political machinations. Once again, the story hooked me in immediately and took me along for a quite an emotional and suspenseful ride. The story started where the last book ended. To be safe, Neve, Hugo, Frances, Jem, and Archie have travelled to and are now living in Paris, France. Max, having been convicted of treason for Hugo’s crimes, has been brought to Barbados as an indentured servant where he will remain until he’s finished serving his 7 year sentence. The story has a number of chapters from secondary characters’ POVs which does a wonderful job of advancing the narrative of the story. Once again, interwoven with Hugo and Neve’s love story, Max’s punishment and resentment, and Frances’ maturing and healing there is thought provoking social and religious icommentary which adds interesting layers to the plot. The storyline was imaginative, the characters were real and relatable, and the writing was captivating as shown through mysteries, sweet moments, light spice, laughs, messy families, painful pasts, surprises, danger, plot twists, fate, and love. I am loving this series and I’m off to read the next book to see what happens with Neve, Hugo and friends.
Lots of substance and Book kept me entertained, a lot more action than some of your typical time pieces (and a lot less than your fantasy's). I remained in love with our main characters and loved reading everyone's relationships. This was a slower read for me, just because I'm used to reading high fantasy with alot of action, but this is a beautifully written (and steamy) time jumping piece. I wonder if I'll read the next one only because this one didn't end with such a cliff hanger the way the others did, therefore I could choose to not read on and be perfectly satisfied with how it ended. We shall see, I'm sure when I'm in the mood for a slower pace I may return to Wonderland ;)
This book follows Hugo and Neve to France where they continue to fall prey to new enemies and family struggles. We also see Francis through her own voice which provides a deeper understanding of this young girl and her own inner struggle to find herself after the horrific marriage she endured. And then there's Max. Every time you start to feel sorry for the guy, he goes and does something stupid. somewhat proving that leopards can rarely change their spots. Overall, a good third book in the series.
I didn’t think it possible to be even more intrigued and totally addicted to Shapiro’s books but I must say each one is more and more so! I can’t seem to get much else done in my life while I am in the midst of reading all the glorious adventures and experiences that Hugo and Neve undertake ! Now we have Frances and Archie also I’m hoping starting a life together! Completely and utterly in love with one another as Hugo and Neve are! Can’t wait to start on the next in-this series !
This series is good. Could use some editing. But, the plot and the characters and the historical setting is excellent. Must say, also, that the plot is somewhat predictable. But not wholly. Some sexual content but much better than book two. The book had me on edge at times. I love time travel books and this one/series compares well with some of the other four to four and a half star reads. I am heading onward to book 4.
For me this book ran out of steam a third of the way through. It just became boring. I'm sure that many people would enjoy it though. I might get back to it at a later date.
Another electrifying book in the series. This one focuses a lot on the character Max and introduces some intriguing elements. Trials, tribulations, self-discovery and sacrifice are just some of the tantalizing prospects that the characters are faced with. Very enjoyable.
This third volume in the time travel series Wonderland is still keeping me interested. This one is set primarily in Paris during Louis XIV's time, and has plenty of action. As is common in series books, it ends on yet another cliffhanger. I'll be looking for the next one soon. 3.5 stars
I listened to the audio version of this book. The combination of the narration and story is just brilliant! Hugo, Neve, Jem Francis And Archie’s have made such a great little family. I’ve loved following these characters throughout their journey and can’t wait for the next book!
Going through the passage from the crypt has been one heck of a time. Going to the past then to the future and to the past again. Then another goes to the past and terrible things happen. Hopefully it gets better.
I thoroughly enjoyed this 3rd book in the series. Though a little distressing in moments it was beautifully written filled with action and adventure. My goodness......where this is going no one knows but what a ride! Book 4 here I come lol
I love this book. What Neve sacrificed by following Hugo back into his time was quite something. Never being fully safe after him being accused of treason makes for a treacherous Aunt exciting journey.
Love this series. I can't believe I stumbled into it. The last paced exciting twists and historical accuracy is very enjoyable. You won't be disappointed.
Feels more than derivative of Outlander, and a little too prolonged with unnecessary details. Maybe if I read this forest, I'd only feel the latter but I read Diana Gabaldon's work first, sorry.
How the want for power can really change some people. Following Hugp,Neve, the Children Frances an Archie also Max as they attempt to survive is truly amazing.
