I've Watched You Die

Rate this book
There are two main things I’ve learned since my life turned upside down. The first is, if you speak of someone’s death before it happens, you’ll be blamed for murder. The second? If the hottest guy you’ve ever seen kisses you, and thanks you for saving his life, don’t argue.

I watched him die, over and over. So many times. The vision is always the same and there is never one damn thing I can do to save him. I don’t know why I can’t dream about normal things, like going to school naked, or spiders. I hate spiders. No, I’m lucky enough to see strangers at the moments of their deaths.

The only thing keeping me sane is knowing the visions aren’t real.

Until the accident. The blood. He dies in my arms.

At least, I thought he did. But now he’s here, telling me I saved his life. Telling me unbelievable stories about monsters and gods and destiny. Promising to protect me.

If none of this is real, why am I afraid of the creatures hunting me? And if I saved his life, why are the nightmares back, stronger than ever? What is this thing lurking inside me, eager to strike?

I don’t know, but I’m freaking out.

I’m afraid what I think is real, isn’t. And what I know is not, just might be.

5 stars, full review on my blog!

I posted a Book Blitz for this book a while ago, and I loved the description so much that I had to read it.

I've Watched You Die by Karina Banks is the first book in the Academy for Gods and Freaks, a debut novel to an AMAZING series, which was just released. This book is an engaging Norse Mythology fantasy romance, a whirlwind of action that immediately grabs your attention. The plot is nothing short of extraordinary, and I devoured this book in mere hours.

Yes, I've read other books with a lot of similarities, but I don't know, there was just something about this book that was different to me. Perhaps it was the author's attention to detail that made me feel like I was in the room with the characters or how fun and action-packed it was, or maybe how entranced I was by the budding romance between our two main characters, Daniella "Dani" and Ryker.

Ryker’s lips find mine, and I’m lost. His arms wrap around me in a tight hold I have no desire to break. I want to melt into him. Be closer. I want more.

Daniella "Dani" Price has grappled with visions for most of her life—disturbing glimpses of imminent deaths, entangled with terrifying monsters. Despite diligent efforts to seek help and manage these nightmares through various medications, their intensity escalates. But her nightmares manifest into reality, bringing her face-to-face with a boy central to her visions. Driven to aid him after a life-threatening accident, Dani's act of rescue unveils a baffling disappearance from hospital and ambulance records.

“Dani, you did more than stop the bleeding. You healed me. Exactly like you did when I was bleeding out just now.” He pauses, trying to collect himself. “There was no coming back from those injuries. I should be dead. And I think, deep down, you know that, too.”

We finally meet this mystery boy, Ryker Forsetta, the enigmatic boy from her nightmares, and an undeniable magnetic connection forms between them. As senior prom night approaches, Dani's eyes are opened to the true existence of the monstrous beings depicted in her sketchbook—creatures like the dreaded draug. She and Ryker narrowly escape a draug attack, leading her into the world of Forsetta Academy, where she discovers her Legacy status and meets her protectors, the Ravenborn.

Oh, I like the sound of that. “Tomorrow night?”
“Are you asking me on a date? On a school night?”
“I believe I am.”

This new world is inhabited by princes, demigods, Valkyries, and mystical powers. But, not all in this strange new world welcome her, and Dani grapples to find her place amidst the challenges. Fortunately, she is accompanied by Ryker, the man she saves and falls in love with, to guide her through the labyrinthine obstacles.

During her time at Forsetta Academy, Dani embarks on a quest to uncover her lineage, guided by newfound friends. Her affection for Ryker deepens, despite persistent nightmares foreshadowing his death during his bonding ceremony with Olivia, his chosen Ravenborn—a source of gripping drama.

“So, what? I’m a witch? I have fairy blood?” “No. I believe you are a legacy, a human descendent of Eir.”

I don't want to give too much more plot away.  But ahhhhhhh the world-building and all the descriptions of the Academy/world just painted this beautiful image. It was like a movie playing in my head. The author did such a good job of interweaving the fantasy realm with the human world.

One minute we’re on the cobblestone path, the next we are alone inside a small, hidden garden behind one of the classroom buildings. A wooden bench sits at the base of a giant oak tree, the grassy, oval area surrounded by smaller trees and shrubs that provide privacy. A masterfully crafted, life-sized statue of a winged female warrior on horseback dominates the center of the garden. A large bird, I assume it’s a raven, sits on one of her shoulders. The warrior is covered in complex armor and holds a spear. The setting sun turns the sky shades of coral, pink and gold. The light reflects from the statues’ eyes, almost like the horse and rider are on fire within. The effect is stunning and dramatic.

--------------------------------------------
It’s incredible. The small, circular oasis is home to a petite, calming water fountain surrounded by raised flower beds full of tulips, daffodils and marigolds. A crabapple tree is in full bloom, the little flowers a charming backdrop to the sound of flowing water. An old set of patio furniture sits opposite the entrance. White metal frames support the chairs and table, and are chipped and rusting, giving it a wise, aged sort of character. Bird feeders hang from a massive red maple tree, and fairy lights are draped delicately across the hedge walls. It feels like a secret, or a dream. The good kind.

“Do you like it?” Ryker’s deep voice makes my heart race. His accent is thicker than usual as he whispers from behind me.

The only real criticism I have for this is maybe to be surface-edited, but it's only little things, that didn't really take away from the story. My notes and highlights ➳ ("Maybe Isabella got a peek at my drawings at school or something? Got the imagine ( image ) in her head?”)

Overall, I am absolutely in love with this world. It was fun and action-packed, the world-building was outstanding, and I just LOVED all the characters. And don't even get me started on the explosive ending. The story concludes with a startling revelation and a cliffhanger!!!  It's definitely a must-read. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment. I NEED BOOK TWO. Like RIGHT NOW!! 😭 I can’t believe I have to wait til June 2024 for it 😭😭 Best book I’ve read this year.

I'm so sad this is only on kindle rn. I WOULD LOVE a physical copy of this 😭😭

Brilliant gold light explodes from me. Burning hot power flows into Ryker’s body with such force it causes him to jolt like he’s being hit with electricity.
I don’t stop. I can’t stop.
He must live.

Update Oct 12th: ahhh its in paperback now<33

Outstanding debt novel for Karina Banks!!!

I've Watched You Die is the first book in what I can only call a very intriguing & engaging Norse Mythology fantasy romance.

Karina draws readers in immediately with a jaw-dropping scene but continues to keep them on edge with great world building & enticing characters.

I won't give you any details of the book because this book is best experienced without any knowledge but what the blurb gives you.

Karina builds this story perfectly by delivering the right amount of information with riveting action scenes that all wrap together.

I've never read anything like this before and never wanted the book to end. I love the Norse Mythology that this story is based off of and cannot wait to see what happens in book two.

Absolute must-read, especially for those who love fantasy.

A Beautifully Written and Hauntingly Romantic YA Fantasy

This was an original and addictive book that has taken up residency in my mind as I wonder where Book Two, Love Will End Us, will take Dani and Ryker. This book has all the feels of a well written teen romance and a surprisingly deep mythology inspired fantasy that kept me engaged and following the romance, and it’s been a while since I was a teen.

Haunted by visions of death caused by monsters, Dani has channeled this into her art, filling notebook after notebook with horrific images of both death and the monsters that cause them. Needless to say, this obsession has left Daniela Price in therapy and using medications, but nothing seems to help. Then, one day, on her way home from school she finds the boy whose death has been haunting her. She saves him, but he vanishes without a trace soon after. They reunite at the school’s prom, where Dani learns from Ryker - the boy she saved from death - that these monsters are not delusions but rather are real mythic creatures as they escape one of the monsters. This is the moment where Ryker takes her to Forsetta Academy and she discovers that she is a demigod and her visions were premonitions not delusions. Along the way she befriends other students and her romance with Ryker continues to grow; however, her nightmares continue as the tension ramps up for the cliffhanger ending. This was a great ending, and even though I knew it was coming the writing, plotting, characterization, and dialogue were all so well drafted that I was caught up in and was left gasping! I cannot believe this is a debut novel!

Thank you Grey's Promotions and Karina Banks for giving me the opportunity to read this and share my thoughts!

I’ve Watched You Die is a new YA Fantasy Romance series called Academy for Gods and Freaks AND it’s a debut novel!

As a die hard romantasy fan, this quick YA read was exactly what I needed at the time. Sometimes I just want good old YA with no spice but plot heavy and I got it!

Our heroine, Dani is introduced to us as a human. But after years of being put on medications due to her hallucinations, nightmares and her ongoing mental health, shiz starts getting real when she sees a boy die in front of her then come back to life. The same boy that she has seen dying in her visions. Eek.

What she doesn’t realise is that these visions she has are almost premonition like. She doesn’t understand a lot of what she sees but when another vision leads her to discover that the boy also still doesn’t understand how he survived.

Ryker knows that he should be dead. He saw it, felt it but then he also felt Dani’s hands on him and himself take a breath. He couldn’t ask questions as he was whisked away in an ambulance so he tries to seeks her out to understand how it was possible for him to survive.

With a mix of bonded friends, monsters, visions, powers and of course the typical teenage girl learning to fight, I enjoyed this alot.

Dani is thrown into Rykers world and they together try to find out how her powers are the way they are and what she actually is as no one seems to know. Especially when she has human parents. But the baddies are coming for her.

For a debut novel this was fast but evenly paced, never boring and action packed. It was a little slow to get started but this didn’t deter from the story. It you are fan of JLA’s earlier works, then definitely pick this one up.

I think this book could have been a little bit more elaborated in terms of the insta love between Dani and Ryker but this WILL NOT stop me from devouring book 2 when it comes out. Especially with that cliffhanger!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars

Originally, I was thinking this book is very young. I know it’s a YA. But I mean “young” as in Twilight-young vibes and that’s not a bad thing! I was intrigued by what was going on and was sucked in, wanting to find out more. I enjoyed this magical journey of self discovery, the FMC, Dani, thinking she’s lived her life with severe mental health issues only to discover just… more. She is plagued by nightmares and seeing things, until the things she sees start to feel more real, or are they? I can’t say much without giving things away so I’ll keep my review brief. I enjoyed the story, it was a very easy read and I finished quickly. I’m eager to find out what happens in the next book because.. hello, cliffhanger!! There’s so much to unwrap after that last chapter! The romance was cute and gave me the warm and fuzzy feelings. I look forward to more discovery and see where the drama unfolds.

The first book in the Academy for Gods and Freaks series and I’ve Watched You Die from debut author Karina Banks is a fantastical story loosely based on Nordic myths and mythology as Dani, a normal everyday girl…. or as normal as anyone can be who suffers from violent and bloody hallucinations involving the death of the same young man. Until one day her visions come true and as she sits by the body, she somehow manages to reverse the outcome changing her life forever. Suddenly she’s being pursued by bizarre creatures invisible to human eyes as she’s swept up into a world of princes, demigods and Valkyries, of mystical powers but not everyone is pleased by her presence this strange new world as she struggles to find her way. Thankfully she has Ryker, the man she saved by her side to help her navigate the pitfalls.

I’m on the fence right now about the hero and heroine here. Ryker just seemed a bit weak, and Dani was forever having to rescue him, something I think might get a bit boring after a while, I mean you want a hero to be strong and I didn’t get any real sense of connection between them but I’m holding judgement on them, my thinking is that this book was more to introduce the characters and set the stage for what comes next so hopefully Ryker will come good. There was some good world building with the fantasy world running adjacent to the human world with several interesting characters, I’d love more of Beth and Zel, there were definite sparks flying between them. I’m also intrigued to the mystery of Dani’s lineage. I have my suspicions and can’t wait to find out if I’m right.

Loved the spookish vibes it’s perfect that this book came out in fall. I would recommend this read for anyone who likes paranormal and mystery vibes. I feel like it’s good for ages 15-18 but there is some content warnings that could be triggering for some.

Sexual harassment
Lots of death
mental hospital

If readers are okay with those triggers then I fully recommend!

“I’m drunk, exhausted and about to be interrogated by the asshole and a two hundred year old warrior with exactly zero humor.”

An exciting first volume of fantasy. We discover a new world as we turn the pages, and enjoy watching Dani as she tries to find her place among the "Heirs". Nothing is easy, especially as she hasn't really mastered everything and her powers...It's addictive and I must admit that the finale leaves the reader wanting more. Can't wait for the sequel!

I Watched You Die Arc Review

Okay this was a rollercoaster of a book! While this is not my regular genre this book had me hooked from the get go. It had me questioning everything along with the main character and as you read along the more questions get uncovered. Also Ryker was just so sweet 😩 I loved him as the MMC!

This was such a great debut novel for Karina Banks! That ending left me in complete shock and I’m so excited to see what happens in book 2!

If you enjoy Norse mythology and fantasy this may be right up your alley.

Although it had no spice like my usual reads, I still really enjoyed this story and can’t to see what plays out between Dani & Ryker.

“I’ve Watched You Die” by Karina Banks is a coming of age, young adult romance that was surprisingly well-written for a debut novel.

Daniella “Dani” Price has had visions most of her life. Traumatic, violent visions of deaths before they occur, often involving nightmarish monsters. Despite seeking counseling and being on a myriad of medications to curb her nightmares, they’ve been getting worse.

When one of her nightmares becomes reality on the way home from school one day, she’s surprised to come face-to-face with the teen boy who’s been starring in her nightmares. Desperate to help him after he’s hit by a car, Dani miraculously saves his life only to have him mysteriously vanish from the hospital and ambulance records.

Later, Dani and Ryker Forsetta, her mystery boy, officially meet and are drawn to each other like magnets. On the night of senior prom, Dani learns that the nightmarish monsters that have donned the pages of her sketchbook for years are actually real, as she and Ryker narrowly escape a draug (monster creature) attack at her school. Ryker takes her back to his elite school and introduces her to others who are like her - Legacies, as they’re called - and Ravenborn, their sworn protectors.

Dani’s time at Forsetta Academy sees her trying to figure out which Norse demigod she’s descended from, along with the help from some new friends. She begins to fall for Ryker, despite continued nightmares where she sees his death during his bonding ceremony with his chosen Ravenborn, Olivia. (Oh yes - there's drama there!)

I absolutely loved the budding romance between Dani and Ryker. Despite the obstacles placed in front of them, Ryker doesn’t let anyone stand in his way when it comes to Dani. And the slow burn between them throughout was grueling! (Like their energy with each other is so much that they literally can’t unless they want to attract all the monsters!) I’m hoping to see more of that development in the next book.

I also appreciated the friendships that Dani sustained throughout the story. Dani didn’t just abandon her best friend, Ava, when she transferred to Forsetta - she brought Ava and her sleuthing skills into the fold. Despite being completely oblivious to her heritage before Forsetta, Dani makes friends that help her along her journey in finding out who she truly is.

I would love to see some more character development of the secondary characters in the next book - like I need more about Zelik, Olivia, and whatever is going on between Zelik and Dani’s roommate, Beth!

The story ends with a major revelation and cliffhanger that had me reeling. Like, I KNEW it was coming because of the hints dropped throughout, but it had me by the throat! I cannot wait for the next book to come out!

This was a great debut novel by Karina Banks and I look forward to reading more from the Academy for Gods and Freaks series!

Decent YA style

I'd say, honestly, this is a decently laid out YA/NA style novella. A little heavy handed in the foreshadowing areas, almost leads you by the nose for all that it tries to make things seem uncertain. But decent. A younger, less experienced reader, would be blown away by the ending. But, others would spot the fascination Dani has with certain murals and depictions and see where her arc is headed. She never does ask about alternate mythologies, even knowing what her family dog is named and her dad's favorite exercise. And she never questions about why her power source is blocked, and unable to be located. All but one of those leading to the written conclusion of this story. I almost rage quit at the party scene thinking dub-con was about to play out due to alcohol. But was thrilled to see a writer realize and state how sobriety is key in decision making. Thank you. So much. Art reflects life and too many writers keep playing out the bad decisions while drunk angle. Attitudes won't change as long as it keeps being written out. So a heartfelt thanks from this reader. But the major sticking point for me, well, 2, are:
*She never once goes to the library to research anything. Not the ancient warriors that threatened her, not her history paper, not the other gods, nothing. Her complete apathy in learning about herself is the reason for 1 of the star drops.
*A man accused of abuse of his child, in charge of a school of children? And the highest entities of their society know about it and allow it to continue?? Ridiculous. If he attacks his own, he'll attack others. And a literal truth detector told them this, and he was still allowed to remain in power. That would be er happen. That whole angle is poorly contrived for the plot arc and it doesn't work. The other star drop.
*Wait, a 3rd item:
*She can recognize draug from mythology, something even lovers of mythology had to pause for the concept to float to the surface of memory (that's me. I'm 45 but I've read about all kinds of mythology since I was 11) but she can't recognize what the winged people were in the pictures? I know it was for the plot arc but it wasn't really believable.

The story outside of that, works for YA. It had world building, it had a plot that it followed. It didn't really have character development, just physical changes. They didn't grow, they didn't change their mindsets, they didn't learn anything about themselves. But, 2 out of 3 ain't bad, as Meatloaf sang.

Oh, and she comments a couple of times about how her musculature changed, but the next time she thinks about herself she seems back to normal? A lack of continuity. Ok, ok, I'm done. I'm interested enough to read the next. I demand an explanation for the bad guy remaining in power of an entire school when he's known to be a child abuser. There has to be a reason. And a really good reason that the queen, or other authority figures were left in the dark about her visions and especially the main one.

Props for realistic portrayal of not immediately going off prescribed medication.

Don't ask me what compelled me to pick up this book - or how it even ended up on my radar, in the first place - as I don't read YA fantasy as often these days because it doesn't hold the same appeal as it used to.

Well, duh, when you're in your late 20s it's difficult to properly enjoy a foolish teenager going on an overdramatic rampage due to some minor issue. I am always going to have a soft spot for YA fantasy as it was this genre that got me back into reading and made me realise how much I love and adore the writen word and storytelling but, like I said, once you grow up and can see the teen angst from another angle, it becomes annoying. Sometimes, though, you just crave something a bit cheesy, a bit corny even to get you out of your life of adult struggles.

And nothing beats that feeling when you can ease back into those times when your biggest worry was if your crush is going to notice you got a haircut, or if you're going to pass your Maths test.

This book was just reading itself; it was so fluid and easy and I found myself invested instantle despite the doubts I had at the beginning. Don't get me wrong, this novel is as YA as it could get, however, it reminded me a lot of the older 2010s YA that I guzzled down as fast as my classmates did cheap vodka shots. Besides, the inclusion of Nordic mythology was truly refreshing; usually it's all about the Greeks and while I like them, the world of mythologies are much more vast than that.

Sure, there were some things that made me roll my eyes a bit, though again, that's just how YA tends to get. This book is nothing groundbreaking; it's not going to revolutinise the genre and you won't stay up until 3am to hypothesise and ramble about it. Still, it does its job well - it's entrtaining, with interesting lore and characters that are real and relatable, a romance that might be a bit too insta but not as cringe or dramatic as you'd expect (though I could do with a lot less scenes where Ryker's hotness and perfection was described...). And at the end of the day, it's fun. Which is what you want from a book.

Thus, colour me surprised and satisfied.

And now please someone tell me when book 2 is coming out or where to find updates on it because there's nada! After that cliffhanger, I want to know what happens next.

I’ve Watched You Die - Academy for Gods and Freaks #1 - Review

Author: Karina Banks

Couple: Daniella Price & Ryker Forsetta

Tropes: PNR, YA romance, fantasy romance, Romeo & Juliet themes, star crossed lovers, hidden prophecy, enemy to lovers

Review: Karina delivers an all new YA fantasy romance that will leave you hanging onto the edge of your seat! This modern age Romeo & Juliet reimagining is perfect for those who love enemy to lovers themes full of magic and mischief. I loved all the plot twists, secrets and betrayals that this story had!

Dani is a human who is haunted by a dream that shows the death of a guy she has never met. I immediately was intrigued by her character since she does everything she ca to change her dream until it occurs in front of her face. As she delves deeper into who the mysterious stranger is, her power appears to evolve and grow. Karina did a great job with including Dani’s confusion of what was happening to her and I loved how she did not just brush off what was happening. I loved how her character was fierce and did not back down when she learned what was occurring.

Ryker is a mysterious MC and I enjoyed reading about his story but wished we had more! His meet cute with Dani was effect for them and I felt like it foreshadowed future events. I loved the banter he had with his friends and guards and appreciated how Karina did not make like him a typical Prince. After he finds Dani and learns of her powers I enjoyed how his curiosity got the better of him over and over. I also loved how he fought for her and wanted to learn more about the prophecy between them.

This book is a wonderful YA read. The two MCs are full of banter and wit that will leave you anxious for more. The buildup to the final parts of this book will make you angry though since it ends on a huge cliffhanger! I am excited to see how book 2 takes off and what becomes of both Dani and Ryker’s romance after the ending in book 1. I also hope we see more development of the power system, prophecy and the friends both of them have at the academy.

Rating: 4/5, an intense and thrilling YA fantasy romance!

There are two main things Dani Price has learned since her life turned upside down. The first is, if you speak of someone's death before it happens, you'll be blamed for murder. The second? If the hottest guy you've ever seen kisses you and thanks you for saving his life, don't argue. She's watched Ryker Forsetta die, over and over. The vision is always the same, and there is never one damn thing she can do to save him. She doesn't know why she can't dream about normal things, No, she's lucky enough to see strangers at the moments of their deaths. The only thing keeping her sane is knowing the visions aren't real. Until the accident, the blood, and the fact he dies in her arms. At least, she thought he did. But now he's here, telling her that she saved his life. He also tells her unbelievable stories about monsters and gods and destiny. He also promises to protect her. She is drowning in questions where she doesn't have answers and she's freaking out. She's afraid that what she thinks is real isn't. And what she knows is not, just might be.

This was a surprisingly well thought out and executed plot. It didn't have a lot of the spice and angst that I'm used to, but it was highly entertaining, still. This is the author's debut novel, and I am really looking forward to what the future holds for her. It was a fast-paced, action-packed, and utterly thrilling read. The Norse mythology foundation was my personal catnip. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat. Part two doesn't come out until next summer, so keep that in mind if cliffhangers are a no-go for you. I highly recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
