Arrietty in Underland, A Warped Alice in Wonderland Reimagining.
First book in a new standalone series in the Darkly Sweet world!
Arrietty Lovecraft, Penny’s hacker, put all her unhealthy and unethical adventures behind her and is a quiet potions witch in Darkside until a killer with her face, her tech, and her genetics frames her for a murder and a kidnapping. The Dragonlord of Death comes with a deal, and while Arrietty knows better than to make a deal with death or a dragon, someone has to rescue her good friend from the Spider of Underland before she becomes another mad inhabitant of the place. But first, Arrietty has to get there. Who wouldn’t want to take on a glamour and play the part of a boyband groupie on a magical cruise ship to sneak into a cursed pocket world like Underland?
With curses to break, and kisses to fake, it’s a mission fit for someone else, someone without unhealthy compulsions and even unhealthier obsessions for death dragons in general and Teddy Prince in particular. But since she’s bound to the job, she might as well enjoy it, right? I mean, what would it hurt to taste the prettiest mage in the world, even if he’s toxic, and she’s a feeder witch who can’t stop...
This modern Alice in Wonderland twisted tale is the first in a three book stand-alone series in the Darkly Sweet World that you can read on its own. It will have you cheering for the witch and her happily ever after. What? There weren’t any witches in Alice in Wonderland? Well, there should have been.
Warning: Contains ridiculous situations with crazy characters, some cannibalism, a dash of swoon, and a plethora of wicked mages too pretty to resist.

I didn't really care for this book. It is written in first-person from the view point of Arriettey for most of the chapters (the first-person narration switches and is written in Prince's POV for about five chapters of the book). It is supposed to be a dark Alice in Wonderland retelling if Alice in Wonderland had witches, but ends up reading like our "Alice" is a "pick me girl" who poses like a "not like other girls". She is constantly protesting that she is not a "feeder witch" until it suits her. She does have some sort of curse that prevents her from feeling desire (I think? It was never clearly explained).
It has a three-book series, but I'm not going to read the other two books unless I get really bored and want to know how the whole saga goes. The author also has another series called "Darkly Sweet" that came first and are dark retellings of fairy tales (mostly Hansel and Gretel from what I can tell). So, if you try this book and like it, then you might like that series too.
I don't know how to rate these any more. It was better than the last two books in the Darkly Sweet series. But I don't think it quite reached the same highs. I'm excited for this companion series, though, and enjoying Arrietty. I think she's supposed to rep a more aesexual character, but it honestly just felt like a welcome break from Wit and her 'dragonlord of lust' spinoff. The Dragonlord of Death himself proved much sweeter than I anticipated and I think that's also a welcome break from the tortured souls of the other series. Looking forward to seeing how this one plays out.
One of the better rollercoasters I’ve been on the last hundred books or so! Whipsawing between viewpoints and personalities, self doubt and arrogance, it’s too damn sophisticated to be a young adult novel, and it can only improve!
Mad, mad and just a bit madder - it’s all a mush mash of plot and confusion, touched with snark and plain human ignorance. I like it? I think? It really is baffling and I feel like I’m running to catch up to the meaning, but I’m going to get there.
but it was super enjoyable. I'm not sure who all the characters are meant to be in Wonderland, but l am sure I will figure it out. The tale is great. The characters compelling. I can't wait to start the next book!
I slammed through all the books from this world back-to-back. The 4 books and 2 novellas of Darkly Sweet, then the 2 books of Wit the Wicked, then the 3 books of Arrietty in Underland. Each series corresponds to one of the 3 dragon lords. They were all very good. I'm a big fan of this author now.
I adored the Darkly Sweet books - they were ridiculous and funny in the very best ways, with some darker urban fantasy woven through. Penny is the primary character of Darkly Sweet and I adored her. Her love interest Drake (dragonlord of Violence) is also fantastically odd.
The Wit (Whitley) books were also very good, but Wit is a harder heroine to love. I listed to some of these books on Audible for free (virtual voice narration, but not horrible.) Ian is her love interest (dragonlord of Lust).
The Arrietty books were the most violent and edgy with a lot less humor than the other books, which I suppose makes sense for Prince, the dragonlord of Death.
Teddy and Arry are delightful! The swoony chaos (in this book, but also the series overall) is just so addictive! I particularly loved getting to know Teddy, especially when I think of our understanding of him now compared to back in Penny’s books. Very much looking forward to the next book!
