Magiford Supernatural City #7-9

Pack of Dawn and Destiny: The Complete Trilogy

Rate this book
Ever feel like you don’t belong? Try being a hunter living with werewolves. I’m the definition of “doesn’t fit in”. I’m not Pack, but I’m not the enemy, either.

I struggle to survive among werewolves who are stronger and faster than me, and are competitive enough to break a bone or two for the sake of “fun.”

Greyson, their alpha, is the worst of them all.

Endlessly relentless and twice as deadly, Greyson rules the Pack and expands its territory even though it’s already the largest in the region. I just wish he’d stop interfering with my life. He’s got enough trouble of his own with his incomplete mate bond, but he’s made it his hobby to tease and test me at every opportunity.

Doesn’t my life sound fun?

When wolves from surrounding packs start mindlessly attacking the innocent humans in our city, Timber Ridge, everything changes.

Werewolves don’t turn feral without reason. Which means someone is making this happen, and they’re targeting our Pack.
I don’t like where this is going, but how am I supposed to stop a feral wolf outbreak when I’m just one hunter? Can Greyson and I set aside our differences to see the Pack through this?

With over 38,000 ratings on Amazon and Goodreads, this completed urban fantasy series is packed with humor, adventure, and a sweet, slow burn romance that will have you laughing out loud .

The story was awesome, as was the characters… well, except for Pip. Her whining and feeling sorry for herself, along with NO attempt at solving the problem of the mate bond etc. etc. got worse as the books continued.

" for the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack"

I just reread this trilogy so this review is based on my reread.

There be spoilers ahead—I'm not skilled enough to do a review and separate the spoilers,so please consider this a warning that there are spoilers if you have not read this trilogy. This is not so much a synopsis of the storyline and a rating. Because it goes without saying that K.M. Shea's Magiford trilogies are all ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. It's my attempt to understand how these books relate to each other in time.

According to the timeline on Kitty's blog, Magic on Main Street (Jade and Considine) occurs in the same time period as Pack of Dawn and Destiny. I desperately needed that timeline since I read Gate of Myth And Power before reading Pack of Dawn and Destiny. I'm not that much into werewolves so this was my reading order:

Hall of Blood and Mercy
Court of Midnight and Deception
Gate of Myth and Power
Pack of Dawn and Destiny
Magic on Main Street

My antipathy toward werewolves colored my first read of the series and clouded my connection to it. Not until this reread was I was able to really understand and see, in a deeper way, relationships and character development. The werewolf pack was the trope, but it took a back seat to a great storyline and narrative..

What I loved— The “skinship” and greater physical connection and Pip’s gradual acceptance of it. The way the deaths of both sets of her parents influenced how she didn't feel part of the pack, even though she'd grown up with them. How Greyson took comfort in Pip's presence because she couldn't be bent to his will by his powers the way werewolves were. He couldn't influence her the way he could influence the behavior of other werewolves, With Pip, he didn't have to rein in his power. How Pip developed from hunt bait to a leader. And that Greyson wanted to get close to Pip way before the bond kicked in.Mayor Pearl. The two epilogues. And I love how Kitty writes such deep character. portrayals without bogging down the narrative because characters are portrayed a lot by their actions as a part of the narrative.
.What I didn't like— how the wolves hunted in a group against Pip, a single person, felt almost abusive when she couldn't match their speed. I'm aware in real life wolves hunt in groups, but still... This, and Wyatt and Eric force hugging Pip without her permission. How Pip kept avoiding reading her parents’ Hunter books as a plot stall. Other than these, just a couple of plot drops like the sister of an alpha introducing herself to Pip – and no one asks which Alpha? Most of them were pretty sketchy and a threat to Pip. After Teresa was bitten on dry land, she was rescued very quickly. Yet no Werewolf was able to catch the scent of the attacker? It made sense the other times because of the water masking the attacker's scent.

In Fated, I'm convinced that the Paragon visited Timber Ridge Welcome Center and was not glamoured. So many clues were sprinkled in Chapter 9:

He asked about a onesie for his cat
When Pip offered to help him carry his bags, his first thought was he was glamored as an old man, until he stroked the beard that was not there.
He left some charmed tea that appears in one of the very funny related short stories on Kitty's blog.
He called.his “bestie.” Yeah, Killian.

This was the Paragon in mufti—

“His hair was a coppery shade of brunette, but his hairstyle was unusual for fae in that it was cut short on the sides but long in the back and on the top of his head—

“He had the angular chin and high cheekbones you didn’t see on anyone but fae, but the longer I looked at him the more I noticed his nose was sharper than any fae—who could use illusion magic”

We get to see the Paragon unglamored the way we could not in the Gate of Myth and Power.

In Fated, here's a reference to The Supernatural Task Force, and the appearance of a red headed slayer and her handsome vampire partner (that ain't Tetiana) that made me think of The Order Of Blood and Ruin, And I love Chloe's cameos throughout almost all the books I think.

'For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack’ a quote by Rudyard Kipling, fits the ethos of the Northern Lakes Pack to a tee.

🐺Hunted—4.5 stars🐺

Wow, this book starts off with a bang! I didn’t expect something to happen so soon, haha, not to mention so INTENSE. Just…wow.

Pip is such a fun, down to earth, country girl I totally related to in so many ways (love her white hair too—it’s so classy!), in fact I was surprised by how MUCH I related to her not feeling like she fit in with the Pack or the hunters and in wanting a relationship but being overlooked in so many ways. I like Greyson quite a bit too! He’s just chill yet takes the protection of his Pack and Timber Ridge seriously while also playing at being snarky just to get under Pip’s skin, lol. As always the other characters are amazing and different though there were QUITE a few to keep track of this time around, not to mention trying to keep straight of who was a werewolf and who was a human. Also Pip’s cats are evil. ‘Nuff said.

Amos is a creep and I hate him and am not about to waste more precious typing time on him. 😡 He certainly got what he deserved in the end. How many times can you break your nose again? *smiles in evil satisfaction*

I appreciate how much thought and variation of how people turn into werewolves was mentioned and played with, BUT it also had a bit of a downside in making things a bit confusing in that area. I rolled with it, but it made my mom and sister very confused and dampened their enjoyment of the book. Also while never graphic in any way the violence felt way more intense and…real, I guess? then the other books in the Magiford world so far. I’m not sure if this is because they’re wolves, but regardless it did just seem more ramped up and just MORE if that makes sense.

I was worried I wouldn’t like this book for a bit and I’m really glad I ended up being wrong!

🐺United—5 stars🐺

Oh wow, oh wow, this book is INTENSE, oh my goodness. People are being turned into werewolves against their will and it was both horrifying and terrible without going into gross details or over the top violence. Several of those scenes made me tear up too because you could just FEEL the devastation and pain of what was happening to the victims but also how angry and outraged Pip and Greyson were.

Speaking of Pip and Greyson, they grow so much closer in this book and I am here for their relationship! They’re just too cute even when Pip is annoyed by Greyson, lol. More members of the Pack are expanded too which is nice, and I love Wyatt and Aeric’s friendship not only with each other but with Pip too—they’re like the best combo of big brothers and solid pals and I love it. Scarlett and Radcliff are wonderful additions to the team too, and I’m glad we get to see them more!

My mom and sister felt the villain’s motivations at the end was a bit lacking, but I thought their blasé attitude towards what they did very realistic for a psychopathic character and made their actions that much more terrible and horrifying, especially while certain things in the climax were happening. Also convinced more reasons behind this might still come back up in larger scale in book three…

I’m so excited and pumped to read the final book! So curious on how the author is going to work with or around the mate bond… 👀

🐺Fated—5 stars🐺

Oh man. I inwardly screamed and teared up and felt ALL the warm fuzzy feelings throughout this book to the very end and can confidently say this is my second Magiford series as of right now! (Hall of Blood and Mercy is still first)

I love Pip and connect with her so so much. Her struggles and longing to belong yet being afraid too hit me deeply, not to mention she and Greyson are just TOO CUTE together and I love their “old couple” dynamic so so much. They’re just so comfortable with each other and so loving without going overboard and I just adore them! Greyson is so sweet and loyal while also protective without being possessive and when he did A CERTAIN ACTION before the climax I almost died in screaming noooo!!!! but also weirdly loved him more for it in just how pure and loving the action was despite it giving me (and Pip) momentary heart attacks!

I love the Pack and Mayor Pearl (even though I’d never want to deal with her, haha) and I was right in the actions of a certain character at the end of United being further explained in this book in what I felt made sense for the characters involved.

I loved this book, and I’m sad my family and I are running out of Magiford books! I’ve been enjoying them so much and will happily reread this series many times over!

2023 - Read
2024 - DNF

I've read this series before and although I liked the series, I wasn't completely wowed.

However, I've recently read Hazel, Leila & Chloe's trilogies and have decided to give this series another go.

Although this series takes place in the same world as the other Magiford series, this series feels a little different in spirit. Pip is a bit of a melancholy character, and her bitterness at not completely fitting in appears more poignant given that she has grown up surrounded by Pack. This differs from Hazel/Leila/Chloe who find themselves thrust into new societies which are initially uncomfortable.

Pip begins her series already trained - although her skills do continue to grow throughout the series - and appears more serious/less playful than the other fmcs in this universe (see traits below). She is undoubtedly a strong character, just perhaps less charming/ more guarded than the other fmcs - as is clear through how uncomfortable she gets during her Pomeranian puppy power ups

Characterisation of other fmcs in the Magiford universe
Hazel - The Drake vampire's pet wizard; Has a magical house that can lock you in a basement or punish you with cold showers
Leila - Crazy pet lady; Coffee addict; Obsessed with achieving budget; Challenges fae social norms with her weird/inappropriate sense of humor
Chloe - Housecat shifter that sheds fur when scared; Hates belly rubs and cat food; Loves milk and doughnuts; Has studied cat behaviour to ensure that she can be the perfect cat decoy

A very good series SPOILERS

This trilogy is the story of Pip and Grayson, hunter and werewolf. Pip is an unusual hunter as she lives within a wolf pack. Her parents had died, and she'd been adopted by two werewolves, they'd also passed away. She worked at the welcome centre and tried to keep out of Grayson's way. Her inate wild magic was like puppy pheromones and she was friends with quite a few wolves who gave her hugs. Grayson, the Alpha of the pack can be himself with her, releasing his very strong alpha power, as it didn't affect her. But, after losing her parents and adopted parents, and losing the previous Alpha and family who had moved away when Grayson arrived, they'd ignored her texts, calls and emails. She'd walled herself off from giving love, although she said she felt it. There are many times that her unique abilities cause her to be a target and each book has a story with someone trying to pull down either her or Grayson because of their successful pack, that wasn't successful elsewhere. But this series much easier to read than the night court series, maybe that's me, but I've read these in 3 days. Some series are better than others. This is a good series to read.

I’m going with 3 1/2 stars in this one, though I enjoyed it immensely. Maybe a full 4… I’ve been rating this author pretty highly (4-5) and this one, while still good, just didn’t engage me as much.

It’s always a bit disappointing to have more fun with scenes featuring characters from other series than the ones specifically laid out for you. I am sure there are plenty of readers out there though who will disagree with the following review.

Our unlikely heroine, Pip, is a natural enemy to werewolves- a slayer, a human born with extra senses and abilities - but she was raised from an early age with a wolf group. Trained by both the pack she lives alongside, as well as from the family within the slayer community who keeps in contact, Pip feels neither wolf nor slayer- unable to be fully embraced by either group.

Pack leader Greyson does all he can to keep Pip close, but can’t get through her constant worries that she is a disappointment.

And here is where I have the issue.

Yes, hidden strengths discovered usually makes for a great plot line, but Pip spends far too much time whining about it- both aloud and inner monologue- so I spent more time disliking her than sympathizing. The wolves are engaging, but it’s her human friend Shania and various members of the wolf pack that make the book move along at a nice pace.

When outside forces come against the pack Pip starts to come into her own, sort of. She even manages to moan about her latent abilities coming more to the foreground, which is where she really irks. Finally accepting her destiny moves her closer to her full potential, but then she almost seems supernaturally overpowered, which leaves the final act rushed and (to me anyway) lacking.

Maybe if I had been able to embrace her character I would have enjoyed the ride more, but it’s many of the supporting characters in this book that seemed more developed and able to shine than Greyson and Pip.

Still, it fits beautifully within the intricately rich world that K. M. Shea has created and I love how characters from her other books constantly pop up in unexpected places.

LOVE it!!! Great world-building, characters, action, suspenseful, surprises

The characters are fabulous - many interesting individuals of all types (werewolves, hunters, humans, fae) that I came to love and root for.

The plot is complex, weaving many threads together, creating suspense and action, continually revealing more about the characters, their relationships and communities, and their motivations and choices.

The physical settings of the Northern Lake Wolves territory, the River Timberlake town, the city of Magiford, and its administration complex, the Curia Cloisters, are described in detail - physical settings, inhabitants and their customs, their role in the story.

The themes of identity, acceptance, communication, relationships, trust, and love of all kinds, keep the story relevant, important, heart-warming, and uplifting.

Great read

I have read this series before. I must admit I liked the wizard/vampire one with hazel the most and the fae queen Leila. But This was original we have had hunter storylines before and fall for wolves, but this felt different with her kiss powers and can't mate because of her powers. Made it interesting to see. I hoped Teresa would shift when she is 16 because of the powers of the hunter who knows? Be interesting to see next generation the queens kids and theirs.I am wondering if there was another series with different shifters? I think I remember the paragon showing his true self (I think he did in this or another look) but I think I read a book where he finds his love?

Trilogy in one book

I absolutely love everything that KM Shea writes. She has a way of weaving a story with complementary characters and elements that keep you hooked. I read this story a book at a time when she first released. Now with all 3 books in one book, it’s a seamless transition to each one. I have re-read this book multiple times. I’m not one to re-read books unless I love the story. I highly recommend this book. If you’re into clean romance, with funny characters, check this out. Her characters are all different and fully formed. They banter and fight. It’s hard to describe. Read them, and you will see the magic she weaves with her words.

This here is the complete 3-book trilogy of Pip, an orphan werewolf hunter taken in by an elderly werewolf couple. The adoptive parents have already died before the game starts, so she's doubly alone. The series deals with werewolf attacks that turn some local humans into werewolves (against their will) and Pip's dislike and then growing tolerance for the alpha, Greyson. Pip finds out more about herself and the dynamics between her and her friends is delightful. I think she got a little OP by the end, but I really enjoyed being able to binge the set all at once. I have also read a number of other books in this same world, and I'm a fan.

All About Family/Pack

I loved the Pack of Dawn and Destiny series. It does such a good job of exploring family and found family and how that shapes who we are and how we relate to others. It deals with grief and self discovery, love and power, individual journeys and communal relationships and growth, receiving and choosing love. Most of all it deals with belonging. The stories also hold a lot of adventure, mystery, growing into magic, clean romance, hilarious friend dynamics, werewolf and supernatural politics, and so much more. An incredible series that grips the reader’s heart and attention.

a hunter but more

With this book you get the complete story of Pip which is 3 books!

I love how Pip is taken in by the wolves she is supposed to be hunting when her parents are killed. It takes her awhile to feel part of the pack but that’s not really a surprise. Greyson is a strong Alpha and there are so many wolves that are my favorites as well as humans. There are also lots of other characters from the other Magiford books and some are surprise. Wonder who the black cat could be :)

This was a really fun series and an easy read! It can be hard to find a spice-free shifter series, so if you have a shifter romance itch, I would definitely recommend these books.

Pip and Greyson are kind of... annoyance-to-lovers? Never enemies, but certainly more bothered by each other than they are interested in the beginning. It made their romance feel so satisfying and kind of cozy.

The development of the magic and other relationships felt natural and wholesome, and the supporting characters were incredibly endearing.

I've read this series twice now and enjoyed it both times!

Loved it!!

I've read the complete trilogy of Pack of Dawn and Destiny several times as stand-alone books, and they're just as good as the first time. I love these books! And even though this is not my first reading, I still laughed out loud during the 3rd book when Mayor Pearl ran over the trash, and I also cried--again!--during Pip's epilogue. Dang, these books are awesome, and this won't be my last re-read!

This is the 3rd trilogy in a series of 4 trilogies.

I love them all and recommend reading all of them. You should however read each trilogy in order to best enjoy them. Start with Hall of Blood and Mercy. Ms. Shea writes each trilogy separately but seamlessly blends them all together. I love traveling to Magiford and reading about all her supernaturals. This is my 3rd read through of the 4 trilogies. K.M.Shea is a fantastic writer and one of my favorites. ❤

The second read is just as great as the first

This is the second time I’ve read this series (as individual books before) and this second read was just as great as the first! I love all of the characters and kind of wish they were all real. 😁 The Magiford world is a fun one. I highly recommend them as well as all of K.M Shea’s books. She’s a fantastic author and one of my favorites!

I really liked the lessons on belonging and trust that really came through in the third book. Specifically, I think Pip realized that she needs to love the Pack, even if it will hurt her.
Which, is something that I struggle with to a degree. And, I doubt Shea's intention, but, I think it is something that many Christians deal with to an extent as well.
It is very easy to not feel like part of the "Pack." And, loving people does not always go as planned or in an ideal manner.

clean, adventurous, and witty

Ok, honestly I’m so not into werewolves or urban fantasy but I’m extremely impressed with this series of Magiford Supernaturals and have actually devoured every trilogy by this author. It’s fun, witty, adventurous, romantic, mysterious, and an absolute page turner. You grow and mature with the main characters, you learn so much about the world, and just simply get more and more immersed in this world. And it’s clean which is a huge plus for me.

better than it has any right to be

This is too quirky for my tastes. It over explains and beats the point into you as if you’ve never read a book before and subtext just doesn’t exist. It spends too long on characters from other books that I dont care about. I have NEVER wanted to read so many pages about a pet. Also, two books in a series is really my limit, I never end up reading past the second book.

And yet it’s perfect. Five stars.

Loved it 🥰

This is a trilogy (within a larger connected series) that I have reread many times. I always enjoy time spent with these characters, and how this moves the overall Magiford narrative forward. This book, or the individual books in the trilogy, can be read without having read the earlier books in the Magiford world, but it’s better if you know the backstories.

Refreshing view of shifters

I enjoyed this set of stories, as they revealed a different side of wolf shifters. The characters are immensely fun and entertaining, and I especially loved Pip's views of a hunter living with a wolf pack. It was also great to see the interaction between hunters, wolves, humans, and fae. I highly recommend this box set!

Excellent if, like me, you enjoy a good story!

I have been reading the stories of Magiford and loved them all. This doesn't disappoint on any level. Once again, the supernatural species learns that inclusion, not exclusion, is the key to success and prosperity. Will definitely continue to read. Thanks

Another wonderful addition to the Magiford story

I really enjoyed K.M. Shea’s take on shifters and their place within the magical community. Her integration of Wolf Hunters into a wolf pack is brilliant and added a unique spin on traditional hunter mythology.

I definitely recommend this entire series and I’m off to read the next trilogy.
